Maureen,

 

I don't have the Vita mix, unfortunately. But these are just the directions that are on the instructions. I am on the Hallelujah diet. It is a completely vegan diet and excludes sugars and white flour. Also encourages eating about 85% raw diet. It sounds hard but really isn't. This recipe came from Rhonda Malkmus' cookbook "Recipes for Life from God's Garden" . Everything that I have tried in this book has been delicious!

and if you do get the Vitamix, let me know how you like it. I have also considered getting one. But I wouldn't make my juices in it as recommended if I get one. I think the point of juicing is to remove the pulp so the nutrients can get to your cells quickly.

Pam,

I'm on the same kind of vegan diet you are. I feel healthy and have been making wheat grass and sprouts lately. I like the carrot juice w/o the pulp also.

 

I would love to hear from those of you who do have vitamix machines. I want to know what their strenghts and weaknesses are. I'd like to know what your favorite things are to make in them. I'm looking forward to getting one in the next few to several months, if I can save enough money and I see I'd use it enough. Thanks for your input.

combine the recipes in a journal style such as we receive from the fatfree

list, if you are familiar with that one? Does anyone agree with me or should

Nice concise reply John ....so what do I mean by radical?...ha!!...

 

certainly not bashing stupid executives over the head with sticks...

 

I grew up in Belfast...and I was surrounded by seriously confused ethics all

my life...

 

all I learnt from it, (apart from nationalism sux) is that all movements

have their fringes...and all fringes have their extremes etc etc...

 

Yes I to smiled to hear the stupid man got a kicking...it was purely a

feeling of primal retribution, nothing intellectual about it..other than

it`s inevitability...

 

But back to radicalism....and furthermore...back to belfast....

 

Social change does not occur instantly, but there are moments of

resonance...big waves...and thats what I mean by radical...

 

Thats where I`m aiming...

 

But it ain`t with stick and stones!!

 

oh...and as for the stuff about people reading this? so what? their minds

are as cryptic as join the dots...and I am always innocent!!

Unfortunate that 'radicalism' seems to have acquired

semantic overlap with 'violence'. Remember, violence

is against the human body, not against property. That

is exactly the distinction that the law is trying to

destroy with the Prevention of Terrorism Act. Most if

not all of the AR and other direct-action movements

are strictly NVDA and I've never met any of these

mysterious violent activists. It's not a case of

either a conventional capitalist life with Linda

McCartney sausages or a bombing campaign. Being vegan

is a very important and necessary step towards a total

understanding of the forces that are destroying all

forms of life. A total understanding requires a total

opposition, but there is no reason to assume that

people who feel that way are violent - quite the

opposite. What could be more violent than, for

example, sitting back and letting the radioactive

rubble that remains of Iraq being carpet-bombed once

again? Resistance to radicalism is about the most

violent thing you can do.

Nope, you're not alone. My husband was a meat eater when I first met him. He

decided to try going veg (mostly to impress me while we were dating!) He

found that it agreed with him. That was thirteen years ago and he's still a

vegetarian. In the past few years his father - who eats the SAD diet - has

had heart disease, a stroke, and cancer. I think it makes my husband feel

glad that he's stuck with being a veg. I think his family thought I was

pretty kooky for a long time (I turned their son into a vegetarian!) but now

they talk about meatless burgers and having to keep their cholesterol down.

I guess I'm not so kooky after all...

Last I knew Pizza Hut bases weren't vegan, they contain whey or some

other milk by-product, but there's no point trusting the staff in the

restaurants. They will just tell you what they want to tell you, you

have to check with head office.

I might be out of date on this.

Yes, to all of you who said this past week that the loose use of the term

" vegetarian " is a problem: My five-year-old's " vegetarian " classmate is

visiting and just requested pepperoni on her pizza. I told her we are

vegetarian and don't eat pepperoni. She smiled and said, " That's ok; I'm

vegetarian and I eat pepperoni, and my mom is vegetarian and she likes

fish. But we don't eat any vegetables! " ARGHHH!!!

I've got a practical/ethical dilemma I'd like to hear comments on.

 

Until recently, my son became hysterical when a playmate stomped on an

ant or other bug and that was pretty much the last time he'd have

anything to do with the child. He is 8 now and is still not happy about

such violent behavior, but we find that not only is the practice of

stomping bugs so culturally widespread at this age that kids look at a

dissenter as though s/he just fell to earth from Mars, but the kids'

PARENTS fully approve of the behavior and will explain to us that they

think it's fine or that their kids are used to nature, life and death,

etc.. (??). I really don't know how to tell my kids to react or how to

react myself when this kind of thing happens so constantly and our

My 5-yr old did suggest to a playmate that they " just pretend to stomp on

them " , which I thought rather diplomatic. I " ve made clear to children

visiting OUR house our house rules against hurting or killing any living

creature, and I've expressed regret to children (in the absence of their

parents) over their actions in killing a bug that was not doing a thing

to hurt them. I have had no luck discussing this with parents who did

not already share my convictions, however. Any similar experiences or

insights?

I have had that experience with adults, though not with children. My office

is surrounded on two sides by woods, and we have had every creature

imaginable walking through the offices at one point or another (from bugs to

skunks). I refuse to kill any of the bugs, and my office mates (4 of them)

have over time started picking up the bugs and letting them out the window as

I do. At first it was just to shut me up, then I think they actually began

to respect my point of view, but over the past few years, they have become

used to the idea and say that they do the same at home now. It seems that

my actions, more than my words were what changed their way of looking at

living creatures. We all joke about it now, but all the bugs, mice, and even

the skunk have made it out of the office safely. I don't know if that helps,

but it's my experience.

I don't have the Vita mix, unfortunately. But these are just the directions that are on the instructions. I am on the Hallelujah diet. It is a completely vegan diet and excludes sugars and white flour. Also encourages eating about 85% raw diet. It sounds hard but really isn't. This recipe came from Rhonda Malkmus' cookbook "Recipes for Life from God's Garden" . Everything that I have tried in this book has been delicious!

and if you do get the Vitamix, let me know how you like it. I have also considered getting one. But I wouldn't make my juices in it as recommended if I get one. I think the point of juicing is to remove the pulp so the nutrients can get to your cells quickly.

Well, some stuff you can't substitute :)

Like eggs.... unless you are baking something, then you can use bannanas.

I just thought it would be easier. I'll stay on a little longer and see what

comes my way.

I'd be happy to post some vegan dishes if anyone is interested :)

Like this yummy one:

 

Southern Baked Tofu

Ingredients

1 lb. extra-firm tofu

Corn meal

1 stick Safflower margarine

Nutritional yeast

Pinch of salt

Sage

Celery salt

Corn flakes

Brown rice flour or garbanzo flour

 

Cut tofu into 1/4-inch thick slices. In a bowl, mix all the dry ingredients.

In a small skillet, heat up 1/2 - 1 stick margerine. When completely melted,

dip tofu in margarine; make sure you coat all surfaces. Dredge tofu to dry

breading, and cover both sides. Transfer breaded tofu to a lightly greased

tray or cookie sheet. Bake until crunchy, about 8-10 minutes.

Hey, what's up? a good friend asked me for my secret carrot cake recipe and

I figured that since I typed it up I mine as well send it to the list. Now

there are tons of carrot cake recipes out there but I highly doubt that any

are as good as this one, seriously. Anyway, I guess it won't be secret

anymore and I hope yours comes out as well as mine, it's been a party

favorite for years!

 

Jeff's World Famous Vegan Carrot Cake

 

CAKE INGREDIENTS:

 

* 2 Cups of Flour (i use a mix of whole wheat pastry flour and white pastry

flour)

* 2 Cups of Sugar (i use organic florida crystals)

* 2 teaspoons of baking soda

* 2 teaspoons of cinnamon, ground

* 1 cup of oil (i use safflower or sunflower)

* 3 energy egg replacer servings

* 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract

* 4 cups of raw carrots. grated course. about 8-10 carrots

* 1 cup of chopped walnuts

* 1 Cup of shredded coconut

* 3/4 Cup of Canned, Crushed Pineapple, drained

* Cream Cheese frosting (follow my super dope recipe yo)

* Confectioners Sugar for dusting (i use the evaporated can confect. sugar

but it's tough to find. Drawback = it makes the icing have a slightly grey

color. The supermarket white stuff keeps it nice and white)

 

1) Preheat oven to 350 F. Line a 13 x 9inch layer cake pan with waxed paper.

grease the paper up proper!

2) Sift the flour, sugar, baking soda and cinnamon together in a large bowl.

Add oil, egg replacer stuff and vanilla. Beat it like a red headed

stepchild. Fold in the organic carrots, walnuts, coconut and pineapple.

3) Pour the yummy batter into the prepared pan. Place it on the middle rack

of the oven and bake until the edges have pulled away from the sides

slightly. Insert toothpick. If the toothpick comes out nice and clean,

it's done! This should take, roughly, an hour.

4) Cool the cake in the ole' pan for about 10 minutes. Then invert it over

a cake rack or something similar and remove it. Let this puppy cool for

about 1 hour!

5)Frost the top and sides of the cooled cake with the cream cheese frosting

(See below). Dust it with the confectioners' sugar, eat lots, get a stomach

ache because you ate too much cake and repeat because this cake is that

good!

 

CREAM CHEESE FROSTING

* 8 ounces of vegan cream cheese (head hung in shame, I use toffutti because

it works and tastes best. bad for you but oh so good)

* 6 Tablespoons of vegan margerine (I use earth balance)

* 3 Cups of Confectioners' Sugar ( i use the healthfood store stuff, same

story as above)

* 1 Teaspoon of Vanilla Extract

* Juice of 1/2 a lemon

 

1) Cream the cream cheese and margerine together in a medium sized mixing

bowl.

2) Slowly, very slowly, sift in the confectioners' sugar and beat it, again

like a redheaded step child until it's all in there. It'll take a bit but

get out all of the lumps. No cheating! No one likes lumpy frosting! Stir

in vanilla and lemon and make sure it get's mixed in well.

 

NOTES: You may also use 3 9 " cake pans if you don't have a 13x9 inch pan.

The frosting, if you use the the health food store confectioners's sugar

will be slightly grey. It doesn't effect the taste at all but if you are

trying to impress non-vegans, you may want to go with the old supermarket

bought stuff...

 

I've impressed vegans and non-vegans with this cake and everyone asks for

this recipe

I know people who swear by SmartBeat, but we love Willow Run brand

margarine-- both of which are vegan. I know Willow Run is more fatty than

the other vegan margarines, but let's face it, that's why we use/eat

margarine in the first place!
