Guest guest
Hi Attilio, May I ask for some clarification? Is there any particular preference for needling, i.e., even, tonifying or draining? What about needle depth? I read your article and seem to remember that the depth was quite shallow. Are these also shallow insertion? Do you use any moxa in this protocol? Thanks. P.T. Guest guest
Hi P.T. Yes, abdominal acupuncture uses shallow needling, actually there are three depths in abdominal acupuncture depending which level you want to work on. But in this weight loss protocol, the needle depth is standard. It's only the points which have a strong similarity to abdominal acupuncture. No moxa is used, but TENS can be. Guest guest
Hi Attilio, Nice formula, but does it really work? My opinion is 1 needle (safety pin)threaded from Du26 to the other lip and sealed probably does more. But seriously, has anyone used this protocol successfully and have it work? What were your results? Personally, I think if they are willing to take in less food, exercise more, stress less, have emotional support, it's better than this protocol. Guest guest
Robert and Attilio, What a truly horrifying suggestion! I find this response not only insensitive, but cruel as well. Indeed, some techniques work better for some than others... but this post is a total turn-off with regards to the level of compassion and professionalism I expect of my peers. Add to this the recent slew of " Happy New Year " posts for and against religious expression of good will, and I have to wonder what is going on with this list and its members. It's an oft repeated joke when people ask me, then we usually discuss diet and lifestyle changes. Perhaps it is the end of the winter with Li Chun coming soon that is causing all of this. We are in the jie qi of Dong Zhi and yang energy low, and yin exhuberant. Perhaps needling the K points K3 and 10 will tonify everyone's spirit. Guest guest
Folks, The practice of Chinese medicine is always to examine the entire condition of the patient, and then determine treatment protocols, which can take, in the case of metabolic disorders, several months or even years to alleviate. Treatment strategies can include acupuncture/moxa, herbal medicine, diet, exercise, behavioral modification, breathing exercises, saunas/steam baths, and other modalities. If one method or technique is not working, we need to try something else. It goes without saying, if we are rigorous in diagnosis, our treatment methods will be much more successful. The needle protocol Attilio presents is simple and basic, and is apparently useful in Chinese clinics. However, I don't think it will always be successful, and should in most cases be combined with other modalities as well. In addition, I think this protocol would be better if combined with distal points to encourage better flow through the channels. We should never be lazy, and use all the tools at our disposal to give our patients the best possible treatment. Guest guest
Li Dong Yuan suggested that many chronic diseases stem from the St and Spleen and I suggest using the St and Spleen points. St 36, 40, 43, Sp 3, 6, 9 might be a good start. And the reality is that in order to have weight loss, you must have more calories expended than taken in. If people are getting fitter, you might see an increase in muscle mass which would suggest weight increase, as muscle weighs more than fat. If they see that their clothes fit looser, it's a good sign. We can discuss more, this is a good topic. Guest guest
Karen, Although Robert's message was tongue in cheek it is absolutely scientifically proven that lowering calorie intake and increasing calorific expenditure through increased exercise has always been proven effective at producing weightloss. As far as I am aware no weightloss system has ever been proven to work, unless more calories are burned and./or less calories are consumed. As a side note, I ask all of my clients about their appetite and nearly all will jokingly say that " its too good " . That is apart from those that are very overweight who will invariably say " its up and down " . There are a variety of excuses given for being overweight but the main reason is because they eat too much and/or do too little exercise. Guest guest
Robert, Well, it was the protocol used in China where I first observed it and as you have to pay for everything in China, success is paramount. So yes, I say it does work. If you remember a few members used it when I first described it last year with great success. It would be good to test the protocol in a research study as the auricular acupuncture that often used doesn't always work. As for your comments about not using Chinese medicine to loose weight. Do you really know how weight gain occurs. Don't you think we need to rebalance the Spleen and Stomach? Or should be just pat people on the back for most disorders? Guest guest
Hi Linda, The most popular slimming capsules are the Shou Fu Jiang Zhi (Abdomen Fat Loss) capsules. They help to regulate bowel movements and purge the body. This doesn't mean they are good for everyone. You need to keep on eye on how this is affecting the patient as they are an off the shelf patent. Warm regards, Attilio D'Alberto Doctor of (Beijing, China) B.Sc. (Hons) T.C.M., M.A.T.C.M. Guest guest
Hi Dermot, This is true and the advice given by the W.H.O. but as a TCM practitioner you should be looking at the Spleen and Stomach imbalance within an overweight patient. This is one important reason why they are overweight and should be corrected. Of course other methods should be used, including dietary advice, lifestyle advice, acupuncture and herbal medicine. I'm writing a column for a health mag on this very topic. Once its done I'll share it with the group. Warm regards, Attilio D'Alberto Doctor of (Beijing, China) B.Sc. (Hons) T.C.M., M.A.T.C.M. Guest guest
I'd love to see that Attilio. Let us know when you it's ready. General question: I wonder what this obsession with weight is in the month of January. I know many of us are recovering from the carb assault of the holidays, so there are a few extra pounds, but are not people overweight at other times of the year? Why are they not as driven and focused as in January. Just curious. Guest guest
Anne, I suppose its the beginning of a new cycle and we all like to start that cycle off the way we see ourselves; fit and healthy. I started my exercising before the holidays and so started my cycle early. Warm regards, Attilio D'Alberto Doctor of (Beijing, China) B.Sc. (Hons) T.C.M., M.A.T.C.M. Best wishes, Linda - Attilio D'Alberto<attiliodalberto To: Chinese Medicine <Traditional_Chinese_Medi cine > Friday, January 06, 2006 12:36 AM RE: Weight Loss Acupuncture Protocol Hi Linda, The most popular slimming capsules are the Shou Fu Jiang Zhi (Abdomen Fat Loss) capsules. Thank you. Personally, I would give out the protocol for 10 sessions, with herbal slimming capsules and monitor the effects of these as they can cause some internal disruption to some patients. Of course, dietary and lifestyle advise is also given. I also give people a fact sheet to take home and read, which provides additional lifestyle information. Do you define a certain number of treatments as a " course " , take a break, and then repeat? Or do you continue until the desired weight has been shed? Attilio D'Alberto <attiliodalberto wrote: Hi Linda, Sure, see below: 1. Zhongwan - Ren12 2. Xiawan - Ren 10 3. Qihai - Ren 6 4. Guanyuan - Ren 4 5. Daheng - SP15 6. Huaroumen - ST24 7. Wailing - ST26 The symmetrical points of Daheng, Huaroumen and Wailing should be used, equalling 10 needles. This protocol can be used in all weight loss cases, which reflects a 'cookbook' approach rather than the use of a pattern analysis. This protocol is a slight variation of the core structure points used in abdominal acupuncture (see www.attiliodalberto.com for the article on abdominal acupuncture). Points can be given everyday if necessary. The needles are inserted, left for 25 mins with manipulation.

Ferrance, L.Ac. - Attilio D'Alberto Chinese Medicine Thursday, January 05, 2006 6:07 PM RE: Weight Loss Acupuncture Protocol Hi P.T.
