I fully agree with Butch about spraying the dog, especially with very potent oils. I've got a young whippersnapper here and he really DOES lick himself as much as one of me cats... I wouldn't anyway but my stud had a very bad reaction to the drops the vet gave me I had a nursing dog , newborn pups and fleas in the middle of winter! What worked for me is shampooing and give a final rinse with 1/2 apple cider vinager 1/2 warm water- your dog will smell like a salad, but it works. I also use flower essences, on my dogs a product called flee free, its for all kinds of parisites, doesn't harm the dogs at all and I haven't seen a flea in years since I have been using it. Guest guest Report post Posted June 26, 2004 Hi, Gea, you poor thing!!!! : ( Get some borax powder, sprinkle it onto your carpet, work it well into the carpet fibers with a stiff brush, wait overnight and then vacuum up the excess. Be sure to move all pups, kids, birds, kitties, people and other living creatures out of the room before you sprinkle. Once the stuff is worked in and vacuumed, it's safe, but not good for anyone to breathe in -- especially the little ones. And wear something over your own nose and mouth while beating the carpet! You may have to do half the house one day and the other half the next, since you have to move everyone around. Borax is a dessicant -- very drying -- and fleas need moisture to live. The borax sucks out their moisture and the little buggers suffocate and die. If you have a company called Fleabusters in your area, they'll come out and do it for you, but it will cost you lots more than if you go to the grocery store and get the borax yourself! Guest guest Report post Posted October 21, 2004 Oh Val, I sympathize! We’ve been through this twice. I did NOT want to bomb our house, so we actually conquered them by mostly natural means. You can buy diatomaceous earth (food grade) and put it all over your floors, and it will handle the fleas, but you have to be careful not to breathe it into your lungs while spreading it around. You can actually EAT it, and it will handle parasites, but you musn’t get it into your lungs or eyes. Do a search and get data on it. Organic farmers use it in their crops to control pests. It worked great for us. We also bought 4 little electronic devices that you plug into sockets and they emit a super high-pitched frequency that we can’t hear, and I don’t think it bothers pets either, but it drives fleas and mice crazy, and they leave. You get them from hardware stores or stores like Home Depot. They’re cheap. Just make sure that after several weeks, you unplug them for a couple weeks, because the fleas get used to it (I was told,) especially the newly born fleas. Over a year ago we had the fleas, and I handled the itching by pretty much gouging the bites, because the flea leaves a little piece of substance in the skin – that’s what causes the itching. It worked, but the marks still haven’t totally gone away, so I’ll never do that again. What works pretty well is a product by Dessert Essence called Blemish Touch Stick for blemishes. It has tea tree oil, but if you just use plain tea trea oil, you can end up with dermatitis. But the Blemish Stick has moisturizers that prevent the skin from being irritated. I use it for everything. It really heals. Another good thing is aloe vera right from the plant. It’s really strong. Or – a combination of 2 things, like peroxide and then aloe or the blemish stick or other tea tree product. It’s important to vacuum constantly and to immediately wrap the vacuum cleaner bag in a tightly closed plastic bag and dispose of it, or the fleas will come back out. Particularly go over the areas where the cats sleep or walk or stand, wash clothes and all bedding in very hot water and bag up stuff you don’t need – oh, it’s a hassle! Do searches on fleas, and it will tell you more things. You have to learn about fleas and understand their life cycles, etc. As for the cats, I don’t know of natural remedies, because we don’t have pets now. (We got fleas last year because we had racoons in our attic!!) Best of luck! Cats don't have any need for anything but meat. I'd bet there's very little of that in that can. No criticism....just FYI. There's lots better foods out there. If you take B1, make sure you also take B complex, C, and calcium so as not to get a B deficiency. For your daughter, there’s a liquid form of B vitamins from Twinlab. Re my cat and her dose of garlic bulb extract, people comment on how beautiful her fur is for an outside cat--soft and shiny. She's five years old, and still likes to play and romp when we're outside with her. Unless, she's hungry, she is out roaming and has her usual "cat nap" during the day. Maybe the garlic *bulb* is the difference as the source of the garlic. She also has never had vaccines. I think one has to look at the whole picture. And I personally do not care for kyolic, as I feel it is too harsh. You can order on-line at: www.vitacost.com or may be able to find it at a local health store. I think most of it is around how to keep the pests off your pets. This would include adding garlic to their food, various essential oils have been suggested (for dogs, not cats), etc. For outdoors you can also use diatomaceous earth. Google it. There's lots of good information out there. Plant a few trees in the yard gather some discarded bark from road side trees and spread it around the outside of the house. It may not kill them, but it will keep them away.
