Sorry to hear this Becky. Been there, done that with toothaches before.

Sometimes a bit of clove oil dabbed on the tooth will help numb the pain

(temproary, short term). Use a cotton swab, and apply carefully. You

really don't want to get this on your tongue (ask me how I know!!). Another

folk remedy is to place an aspirin (like Bayer) on the tooth, and hold it in

place by gently biting on it. You don't want to crush it, but let it break

down and dissolve on its own. This won't be pleasant tasting either. Or if

you have some good quality bourbon, dab some on the tooth and surrounding

gum area. Works sort of like the clove oil, but if you like bourbon, it

won't taste as bad.

Hubby was having a problem with a tooth, and we came across something in

Wal-Mart. It's called " Red Cross Toothache Medication " , comes in a small

bottle (1/8 oz), and is packaged in a blister pack. Worked pretty good, but

not very good tasting according to hubby. OralGel Maximum Strength

Toothache formulation works pretty good too.

These are only temporary measures, and your best course of action is to get

to your dentist as soon as you can. Sometimes what seems to be a toothache

turns out to be an infection of some sort.

Good luck!

Hi Becky

I'd try clove oil. A little dabbed onto a cotton ball and stuffed up against the

tooth will help numb the area. Don't use too much cause it can burn some (clove

is strong stuff), and be warned it does taste yucky.

I had a friend who once had a tooth abscess, but couldn't make it to the dentist

immediately cause he was living in the mountians in a camp ground @ 10,000 ft

for the summer (and had no cash on hand or insurance), so I made him up a combo

of powdered goldenseal root with a drop of clove EO made into a paste with

hydrogen peroxide. He packed that around the tooth until he was able to get his

mouth to a dentist (now that is a really yucky tasting mixture ;-p ). It helped

the swelling, infection and pain go down. It was also good because when he

actually made it to the dentist later that week (thank heavens for Western Union

and parents *lol* ;) they were able to work on his tooth immediately since it

wasn't all swollen and infected still.

Feel better! Get to a dentist ASAP!

Hi thanks. Will try those. The problem is --I have went to the

dentist, had a root canal and a crown done. APPARENTLY it has to be done

over again.(the root canal) How lucky is that? I am on penicillin and

hopefully that will take care of it until I get another root canal done.

YAAAY!!!!!!! I simply can't wait for that enjoyment! ha ha

But until then, I shall try those things. I am desperate. Thank you again

so much!

Yep, its gut wrenching agony, feels like 100 nails

are in there. Its frustrating when you do what the

dentist recommends and its still not fixed. grrr

Life.... ain't it grand? That is why you have to sign

that little piece of paper BEFORE the root canal.

Root canals/crowns don't come cheap either and here I

was thinking it was FIXED. HA silly becky.

You are stuck between a rock and a hard place apparently.

If you believe it is caused from an infection, peel a clove of garlic and

tuck it between the sore gum and your cheek. Keep in place for an hour or

so, and replenish as often as needed. It usually kills the pain pretty

quickly, but you'll want the antibiotic powers of the garlic to work.

Additionally, you could see if your local store carries spilanthes, aka

'the toothache herb'. You can make a paste of it, chew the leavs, or use a

tincture, depending on what they have. I did a quick google for you to give

you some spilanthes info:

http://tinyurl.com/n644

Clove oil can work, but it can also really irritate the gum, and begin a

sensitization process, so be careful if you use it.

MM Becky,

Clove oil, Put a drop or two on a q-tip and rub around affected area. I have

also heard that chewing on a regular tea bag (Lipton) after it has been brewed

works. Havn't tried tea bag, but clove will numb it for awhile and also give

good healing nutrients as well.

Sorry, Nothing worse in my mind then a tooth ache.

Heed Anya's warning! You increase your chances for sensitization when

using ANY EO's neat. Don't go overboard!

Also be careful with using a raw garlic clove in the mouth or on the

skin. I had a gal pal who put a raw bruised garlic clove on her skin

(for whatever reason it was I don't recall as this was a LOOONG time

ago) and left it there covered with a bandage for the day, and by then

end of the day it ate a few layers of skin away. Her quote with a whine

was " it ate me, instead of me eating it - Ow! " *lol* ;)

Natural remedies do have to be used with respect and caution. no doubt!

Hi Chris:

You'll notice I didn't say anything about bruising or otherwise cutting the

garlic clove. I've recommended this pain-killing, infection-fighting method

for folks with toothaches for 30 years, and not one has ever gotten the

'garlic burn' (which *can* happen with a cut/bruised garlic clove. It's

probably the sulphurous compounds in the garlic that would burn, but if

used whole, they are not released, except in the gentlest way, into the

infected tissue.

Yes, Chris, glad you noticed. Sometimes folks have a 'go overboard and do

the max' mentality (oh, no, not _me_, ever! LOL) and injure themselves.

That friend of yours sure did with crushed garlic on bare skin, covered

with a bandage. I can imagine what it did to her skin! I should have been

more explicit about not crushing it. I hope I hear back from the OP. I know

that remedy gives immediate relief.

Dear Mary,

your message is very hard to answer.

If I read it correctly, you are asking us to somehow recommend

something that will make pharmacuetical drugs somehow less toxic, and

therefore less side effects as that is why they cause nausea. I'm

sorry but I do not know of anything that will do that.

The doctor probably has something to give for nausea. Even though it

is a drug and not something that I would normally recommend, if

you/he need to use these strong medications for a treatment it may

be a possiblity to need to also use the accompaning medication for

nausea too.

I am not saying that there isn't something natural that will help

with the side effects of those drugs, but I personally don't know of

any, but my knowledge is limited in this area. Also mixing allopathic

drugs with alternatives can sometimes affect each other in other ways.

Another part in trying to help suggest something with the problem is

that we really don't have any idea of his history, his age (child or

adult?),his condition that necessitates the treatment, and what the

other drugs are that he took that you mentioned and why, etc.

As for the nausea, you can try ginger capsules from the health food

store or ginger tea ( I have doubts that ginger ale or snaps might

have sufficient real ginger to do the job) or even consider

marijuana (again adult or child?) in certain circumstances such as

for very serious or terminal illnesses. Without knowing anything it

is very hard to try and help with possible information.

I do know of illnesses that are treated with interferon and

ribavirin, but would not try and guess what is the case here.

It does appear though that you are dealing with a serious illness.

If the pharmacuetical drugs taken in the past cause such reactions as

you have written, have you looked or researched to see if there are

any possible alternative treatment for his condition? As I stated

earlier, without knowing anything and as for one reason or another it

may not be possible, but it just seems like a logical question from

my end.

Someone else in the group might know of some herbs that might help

control nausea or you can do a search on our archives.

It must be a difficult situation for your son and yourself, I wish

that I knew more that might help but also am afraid to suggest too

much without knowing much about the situation.

good luck,

Frank

Hi Mary,

Fennel, ginger, licorice (the health food store variety) and mint

teas are extremely good for nausea. There is a natural gingerale.

It contains only natural cane sugar for sweeteners. The best natural

gingerale is a Jamaican brand although any HFS variety is better for

this! I use them quite often.

Mary,

This may prove helpful for you. Here is a recipe for homemade

gingerale that I came across recently.

JoAnn

---

-----------

Homemade Ginger Ale

YIELD: 8-OUNCE SERVING

3 ounces ginger syrup (see below)

5 ounces sparkling mineral water

ice cubes

1. Pour the syrup into a 10-ounce glass and add the ice cubes.

2. Slowly add the sparkling water. Stir and serve.

Making Homemade Ginger Syrup

With minimum effort, you can make this flavorful stevia-sweetened

syrup to have on hand whenever you're in the mood for a refreshing

glass of sparkling ginger ale.

GINGER SYRUP

YIELD: APPROXIMATELY 4 CUPS

4 cups water

4-or 5-inch piece fresh ginger

1/2 teaspoon white stevia powder

2 tablespoons vanilla flavoring

1 tablespoon lemon extract

1. Peel and finely chop the ginger

2. Bring the water to a boil in a small saucepan. Add the ginger

and stevia, reduce the heat to low, and simmer gently for 8 to 10

minutes.

3. Strain the liquid into a heatproof container, and stir in the

vanilla and lemon

4. Covered and refrigerated, this syrup will keep for several days.

Robyn,

It sounds like you could have a bladder disorder. How long has

this been going on? I was just recently diagnosed with Interstitial

Cystitis, which is a bladder disorder, and your symptoms sound like

it could possibly be that. Where is your pain at? If you want to look

into it go to www.ic-network.com and you can look at the patient

handbook on the left, or go to the messege board they have- it's a

really good one. If you have any questions you can email me at

rachelbabe86 Let me know if you figure out anything, and

how your doiong! ~Rachel
