Possessions, desires and duties form our bonds of attachment to the world. Though they are important to live a meaningful life, they also create chains and shackles when there is time to leave. Who would want to embrace the unknown leaving everything he has loved so dearly, behind.

Nonetheless, I feel that the extent to which one may fear death also depends on the society one belongs to, and the samskarams one receives. Amongst Hindu’s who are brought up on the staple diet of Geeta, death is much more acceptable and not feared. Similarly Jains who think of death as a celebration are generally more prepared for it.

West, on the other hand, is choked with the fear of death. Middle ages in Europe specially instilled this morbid fear to get people’s attention to church. There is absolute phobia about dying. Ageism is a big issue in the West.

And imagine, a major worry in the West is also cost of their own funeral for which arrangements have to be made before leaving. In India, one prays and must bear a son so that he may die in peace! (in lighter vein)

Dear Neelam ji,

namaste,

Essentially I do agree with you.

In the West, funeral costs are a great worry, and many older folk have insurance

policies specifically to cover funeral costs. Funeral costs can range from 5,000

-10,000 Pounds in UK, depanding on location as well as type of

coffins/decorations/flowers/number of cars etc. Open air cremations are not

allowed, and the care/storage of dead bodies remain with the funeral directors,

who will allow access to the body whenever requested. For burials, there is

added cost of purchasing the plot of land.

Most westerners especially ethnic white folk end up in the pub after the funeral

to drink to the deceased and bid him " bon voyage " They dont beleieve in fixed

grieving periods. The kids are back at work the following day after the funeral.

I think issues like " quality of life " prior death also influences his/her mental

readiness..

For some there is the suddenness of the event, and for others it a longer more

painful journey through pain, disease and loss of dignity due to dependancy on

others, for basic needs of care and sustenence.

warmest regards

Sheevani

Well Sheevani ji, it does add to a dying man's woes!RegardsNeelamOn 8 April 2010 20:15, Sheevani <sheevani147 wrote:

Dear Neelam ji,

namaste,

Essentially I do agree with you.

In the West, funeral costs are a great worry, and many older folk have insurance policies specifically to cover funeral costs. Funeral costs can range from 5,000 -10,000 Pounds in UK, depanding on location as well as type of coffins/decorations/flowers/number of cars etc. Open air cremations are not allowed, and the care/storage of dead bodies remain with the funeral directors, who will allow access to the body whenever requested. For burials, there is added cost of purchasing the plot of land.

Most westerners especially ethnic white folk end up in the pub after the funeral to drink to the deceased and bid him " bon voyage " They dont beleieve in fixed grieving periods. The kids are back at work the following day after the funeral.

I think issues like " quality of life " prior death also influences his/her mental readiness..

For some there is the suddenness of the event, and for others it a longer more painful journey through pain, disease and loss of dignity due to dependancy on others, for basic needs of care and sustenence.

warmest regards

Sheevani

Dear Kulbir Ji,I have a different take on this. Not having an Ego should not be confused with Cowardice. Just because some one was brave enough to Face Death, does NOT mean they Did NOT have Fear. It just means they OVERCAME that Fear through Bravery.Only the True Yogi can Die without Fear, without having to OVERCOME FEAR of Death, because for Him/Her Fear does not exist, Becaue he/she KNOWS he/she is NOT the Body. -Manoj Kulbir Bains <lalkitabkb Sent: Thu, April 8, 2010 8:12:19 AMRe: Re: spritual practise success/failure

Dear Manoj ji,// As long as even the slightest remnant of Ego survives in our consciousness, Fear of Death (at the moment of Death) is inevitable. Only persons who have relinquished all sense of Ego can remain Fearless at the Time of Death, since the Fear is one of the Ego, which Fears the destruction of the Vehichle (Body) through which it operates.//

Kindly refer to history; how many happily embraced death just because of EGO. Hadn't there been ego, there would had been no reason to die (voluntary death).

Conquering the Fear of Death is the Final Frontier. As long as even the slightest remnant of Ego survives in our consciousness, Fear of Death (at the moment of Death) is inevitable. Dear Chiranjiv ji,Namaste.///Yes mind does exist unless you lose it beforehand./ //Haha , loved it! Hope u are not seriously suggesting I should start to lose my marbles just yet!!Unfortunately my experience is the mind gets younger and sharper as the body ages...

I feel in youth, one has so many commitments, expectations and responsiblities, one is too busy in the "rat-race" to think beyond immediate needs of one own circle. With age, the children etc are too busy with the "rat-race", so it is excellent time to reflect on life's experiences and the mind trully blooms..U see life from a different perspective. .with "new eyes"... the world seems a much more pleasant place, and it is surely a great loss, not to at least try and understand and enjoy its vibrancy.

U get a bird's eye view, of a world, full of contadictions, full of all kinds of people, each with different outlooks, talents and

personalities, the good, bad and the questionable. . every kind of divides, race, colour, religion, language, status... there are weddings, births and also funerals, yet despite all these divisions, everyone seems to be in such hurry,, but for what? ....the world goes on unperturbed by people or events...

What is the thread/bond/ energy that keeps this chaotic world going?Somehow you slowly become the spectator of life, rather than the active participant. Why do people fear death? Do they fear no longer being part of "this tapestry called life on earth"

The crux I think is about the sense of fulfillment and completeness. Fulfillment of Responsibility or richness of experience or having seen the pleasures or having contributed to the family or society, each of these is an aspect. Having tread on the path to achieving a goal bigger than the body, is what brings that completeness. And lack of that completeness is what makes man crave to live longer. Here is a piece on completeness, excerpted from one of my old articles:

For this we need to see what man seeks in life. He

seeks happiness. Then the question is what brings happiness. It is completeness

that brings happiness. There is a vast landscape of incompleteness in man. The

more successful he is in fulfilling it and achieving completeness, the happier

he is. There are different ways to achieve completeness. Most wise people say

that having a goal and working for it throughout one’s life is the way to

achieve this completeness. It is aimlessness that causes incompleteness to grow

and it is goal that fills in that incompleteness.

Having said this, it is really

rare to find in a society someone who has such goal and spends his life for it.

Most people have aims, ambitions, passions, fancies, principles, dreams,

visions, but a goal of the kind that offers such a fulfillment is rare to find

in men.

There are many constructs man

creates to offer completeness – the biggest of them is God. A definition for

God/Divinity is “the belief that offers completeness to manâ€. This is not a

qualitative definition for God but a teleological definition. At higher levels

it is not a belief but a living presence with which he needs no other circle or

society to offer him anything except his basic physical needs (sometimes not

even that). The more a man gets absorbed into it, the more complete he gets and

the less is the need for him to seek, create or move within circles. This way,

aloofness is brought about by a kind of completeness in man.

But there is dichotomy in

aloofness – one who has not begun the journey for completeness and still has to

feel the need for circles and create them and the one who has journeyed through

it and finally grew above it by achieving completeness from within.

Thus during his journey he

creates and sustains many levels of collectivities – this phase is called

pravritti. In pravritti marga man synthesizes and sustains the society. Then he

locates the space within him where he can attain completeness – then he starts

nivritti. That is, he withdraws into himself.

There are many other ways man can

achieve completeness – art forms, research, social activity – in short any kind

of synthesis. Synthesis brings completeness. In traditional language one

transcends annamaya, pranamaya and manomaya kosas with synthetic activity and

lives in vijnanamaya kosa. He then moves further in, to anandamaya kosa and

within that to achieve total completeness. But in this stage of transcendence

he does things that do not relate to the subject of his synthetic activity. For

instance, a scientist stops speaking about laws of science and starts dwelling

in philosophy. An artist no more thinks of skill but only expresses his deepest

experiences. A social activist no more represents his community or cause or

principle but becomes instrument in the universal cause. In this stage he does

continue to synthesize but it is entirely different both in content and quality

from what he does earlier. This is the highest form of synthesis and offers the

highest fulfillment for man’s life.

The dependence a man has with

collectivity begins as he steps into pravritti, grows with it, and starts coming

down when he starts nivritti. As he completes nivritti he has nothing to do

with any kind of collectivity – family, community, society or nation.

Dear Bhaskar Ji,The EGO Iam talking about is not Pride but the inference that most of us have, that "we are the Body". So, what I meant to say was, as long as we are in "Body Conciousness" we will have "Fear of losing our bodies". -Manoj Bhaskar <bhaskar_jyotishTo:

Sent: Thu, April 8, 2010 6:30:23 AM Re: spritual practise success/failure

Dear Manoj ji,

I would like to argue on this ( Not much- because I like you, so just

little)

Remove the Ego from a man who has not been able to perform his duties to

the satisfaction of his family members at all. Even if he is humbled as

to feel like a Donkey, which means not a trace of Ego is left in him,

yet he would not like to die BUT fear of having to die, because he would

look for few years more, so as to once again attempt to do something for

his family members and make them content and become content himself in

the process....

I can give more such examples.

regards/Bhaskar.

Dear Manoj ji,

I had a great doubt that you are really talking about " Body

Consciousness " part...

But I want to talk practical.. No human being has a right to think on

these terms and disassociate himself from the " Body Consciousness "

unless he has successfully delivered his duties which he was assigned

to, in his Birth as per his own scale of measurements (As Sheevaniji

mentioned and which I too meant but could not explain due to posting

hurriedly)....

best wishes,

Bhaskar.

Dear Manoj ji,

We are ordinary people. I agree that " Yogis " come from us Ordinary folks

only. But to become a Yogi one has to be very good on many scales.......

A Yogi may not fear Death for he knows that that the Life on earth is

just a temporary rest on a station in ones journey, but the actual

Journey is Living without the Body, for millions of Years throughout

eternity......

But we dont want to become a Yogi yet, unless we have imparted our

duties as a good " Grihastha ashram " Holder...

best wishes,

Bhaskar.

Dear Neelam ji,namaste,Essentially I do agree with you.In the West, funeral costs are a great worry, and many older folk have insurance policies specifically to cover funeral costs. Funeral costs can range from 5,000 -10,000 Pounds in UK, depanding on location as well as type of coffins/decorations /flowers/ number of cars etc. Open air cremations are not allowed, and the care/storage of dead bodies remain with the funeral directors, who will allow access to the body whenever requested. For burials, there is added cost of purchasing the plot of land. Most westerners especially ethnic white folk end up in the pub after the funeral to drink to the deceased and bid him "bon voyage" They dont beleieve in fixed grieving periods. The kids are back at work the following day after the funeral.I think issues like "quality of life" prior death also influences his/her mental readiness..For some there is the

suddenness of the event, and for others it a longer more painful journey through pain, disease and loss of dignity due to dependancy on others, for basic needs of care and sustenence.warmest regardsSheevani

Thanks Shankar ji for sharing your beautiful thoughts.//Most wise people say that having a goal and working for it throughout one’s life is the way to achieve this completeness.//

I feel in modern society most people are working towards goals and do pursue them quite relentlessly throughout their lives, yet feel a sense of incompleteness at the end of it because the either goals were misplaced or they forgot to look at the beauty of life as they remained focussed on the destination.

What is the goal of individual and collective human life that brings in completeness and how best to go for it, is perhaps the question?

God/Divinity is “the belief that offers completeness to man”.

Dear Bhaskar Ji,You are absolutely right. There is much duty to do towards Family. Perhaps a true Karma Yogi can achieve both, but so far I have fallen miserably short :) Regards, -Manoj Bhaskar <bhaskar_jyotishTo:

Dear Manoj ji,

We are ordinary people. I agree that "Yogis" come from us Ordinary folks

only. But to become a Yogi one has to be very good on many scales...... .

A Yogi may not fear Death for he knows that that the Life on earth is

just a temporary rest on a station in ones journey, but the actual

Journey is Living without the Body, for millions of Years throughout

eternity.... ..

But we dont want to become a Yogi yet, unless we have imparted our

duties as a good "Grihastha ashram" Holder...

best wishes,

Bhaskar.

Dear Manoj ji,

I agree with you. Once you 'let go of the ego' you are almost in the vicinity of

detachment. We need to realize that nothing is permanent. Not even

happiness/sorrow. So how come life? This is the basic truth.

'Ego' is I, me, myself, mine etc. Let go of this..... I am sure the 'Fear' of

death disappears.

which Fears the destruction of the Vehichle (Body) through which it operates.

Dear Bhaskar ji,Tell me, can you tell me if there has been any one who has been able to perform his duties to the satisfaction of his family members at all? I am speaking from personal experience. I find, the more you do , the more is expected from you and the more you are criticised.. I do not know if you agree with me or not but this has been my personal experience.

Dear Anita-ji,

The more we do for "Satisfaction of others", the more chances of "taken for

granted". And nobody will ever be satisfied.

It will be better if we have some 'internal performance apprisal' ...then we

will be satisfied at least.

Dear Anita ji,

I am with you on this... I actually meant that one should do his duties

to the best of his potential possible otherwise he could not think of

dying peacefully. One cannot make anybody happy in this world. A man

cannot make even himself happy so no question of family members.

The appraisal has to be self as I think Chakraborty ji mentioned.

What you wrote is perfect human behaviour. The more one does, the more

is expected, and the more one is criticised, and the more they will sit

on your head and try to control you. But we have to draw a line who is

exploiting us and who needs our services. And apart keeping aside how

they behave towards us, we have to continue doing our duties to the best

of our extents possible..

regards,

Bhaskar.

Dear Neelam ji,"I

feel in modern society most people are working towards goals and do

pursue them quite relentlessly throughout their lives, yet feel a sense

of incompleteness at the end of it because the either goals were

misplaced or they forgot to look at the beauty of life as they remained

focussed on the destination.

What

is the goal of individual and collective human life that brings in

completeness and how best to go for it, is perhaps the question?"Most people as I noted, have cravings, ambitions, aspirations, passions, but not many of these can be called goals. For any pursuit to become a quest, for an ambition to become a goal, there needs to be elevation in the person as well as the level at which the pursuit happens. For instance, earning wealth cannot be a goal - while generating wealth can be a goal and even a moksha marga. The former has "sangraha buddi", while the latter has synthesis. Similarly excelling in science cannot be the goal that fulfills, but making it a fulfillment for life does. Perfecting in music cannot be such a goal, but the quest for the nature of essential ananda in nada can be such a goal. The former leads to latter in the case of great men, but we should not mistake former for the latter. Thanks Shankar ji for sharing your beautiful thoughts.//Most wise people say that having a goal and working for it throughout one’s life is the way to achieve this completeness. //

Was wondering after reading all those mails about the fear, the fear of death, the fear of life, the fear of being, the fear of astrology, the fear of bearing cost of funerals, the fear of deciding the number of cars, the fear of deciding the design of coffin, the fear of selecting the kind of flowers to accompany, the fear of paying insurance premiums at time to cover this cost, the fear of what would happen to my body after me.....

after me.....

after me.....

when i am not there then why fear.....

Liberation from the 9 door cage is welcome...

That reminds me of a famous song...."jayen to jayen kahan....samjhega kaun yahan, dard bhare dil ki zuban"....

Na jeene main chain na marne....(no peace in life and no peace after death too)....

just some random thoughts....

Sir,

A very good mail.

Thank You.

Fulfillment of Responsibility or richness of experience or having seen the

pleasures or having contributed to the family or society, each of these is an

aspect. Having tread on the path to achieving a goal bigger than the body, is

what brings that completeness. And lack of that completeness is what makes man

crave to live longer. Here is a piece on completeness, excerpted from one of my

Dear Manoj Bhai,

Please do not feel that you are alone.

Most of us are in the same boat giving you company.

Most of us have failed miserabley. This failure can

be noticed in the eyes and behaviours of the family members

towards us. Somewhere we too are to blame for

not having tapped our potentials to the fullest,

and somewhere they too, for

not remaining content and satisfied

with whatever we are able to achieve and create..

best wishes and warm regards,

Bhaskar..

N.B. Most of us are time wasters and not focused with no drawn out plans for the day... We spend our time thinking about so much work to complete during the day, but never begin sincerely and neither complete it after beginning and the most bad habit is Procastinations......

Spirituality. Which path to adopt and which to leave. Which Guru to adopt and whom to reject as a guru. Harivansh Rai Bachhan gave the solution "raah pakar too ek chala chal, pa jayega madhushala" (select one path and then keep tredging it with patience and finally you reach your end, your goal (if that is the goal)...

One who has read all the scriptures and have understood the essence of that and one who has risen above all the doctrines of life scripted by various faiths and religions, one who has escaped from the clutches of rituals prescribed by all practitioners of faith only can reach that "madhu (honey) shala (land)"

It all depends on how one perceives the things. One can perceive this madhushala of Bachhan as a modern day "BAR" or one can also perceive this Madhushala as a place where one is bereft of all worries of life and reaches the end becoming a "mouji".

Mouj lo.....

best wishes

Na jeene main chain na marne....(no peace in life and no peace after death too)....

just some random thoughts....

best wishes,

Mouji
