  1. ." Ramananda Raya then replied, "Prema bhakti (ecstatic transcendental love) for the Supreme Personality of Godhead is the essence of all perfection." anyabhilasita-sunyam jnana-karmady-anavrtam anukulyena krsnanu- silanam bhaktir uttama “The cultivation of activities which are meant exclusively for the pleasure of Sri Krsna, or in other words the uninterrupted flow of service to Sri Krsna, performed through all endeavors of the body, mind, and speech, and through the expression of various spiritual sentiments ( bhavas), which is not covered by jñåna (knowledge aimed at impersonal liberation) and karma(reward seeking activity), and which is devoid of all desires other than the aspiration to bring happiness to Sri Krsna, is called uttamå bhakti, pure devotional service.” ( Brs1.1.11)
  2. Krsna bhakti janma mula haya sadhu sanga Krsna prema janme tenho punah mukhya anga CC Madhya Sadhu sanga (the association with saintly realized persons) - ist the root cause of krsna-bhakti - waters the creeper of bhakti - bring the fruit of krsna-prema - remains the most essential anga of bhakti after the krsna-prema was awakened.
  3. Very good explanation by tattva-darshi. There is no fault in the sastra. Sometimes apears like this because the condition soul cannot understand it, and it has comendements for people of different eligibilities. The real guru, the tattva-darshi is not dependent on sastra. He realized the truth. He realized his sambandha (relation) with his ista deva (worshipable deity) because he was under the guidance of another realized soul, and he himself can reveal the sambanda jnana to his disciples at the time of diksa. Sastra is not a book, even if in this yuga aparently it is so. Sastra is the transcendental sound (sabda brahma), which is directed to the soul. Without the sat guru sastra would be a fairy tale book. But sastra gives us asurance that vishnu jana (the man of God) will always be on the surface of the earth. The unfortunate situation is that one has not enough sukriti (eternal pious activities) to get the association of sat guru.
  4. Srila Visvanatha Cakravarti Thakura says: The way to bhakti is the way of shabdha brahma (transcendental sound). Spoken by Srila Bhaktivedanta Aranya Maharaja in Vraja Mandala Parikrama 2001: "adau guru mukhat shravant" Srila Vishvanatha Cakravarti Thakura explained in the purport of this verse: "Srimad Bhagavata 3.9.11. (Asse zrutekSita-patho nanu nAtha puMsAm) that the path to Krsna can be seen through the ears and that hearing must be done from the mouth of sat guru. If the path is transcendental why do you limit it by physical association? Answer: Because it is transcendental therefore any transcendetal thing oh, comes from transcendental source; like harinama, diksa mantras are transcendental hari katha is transcendental srimad bhagavatam is transcendental, so transcendental things come from transcendental source. So, everything in THIS world is material! So, where it will come from? Only when any realized person descende in this world and is carying bhakti-shakti with them, than you can receive what is transcendental. When a pure devotee speaks, mixed within his voice are the safron particle of the lotus feet of Krsna, says Srimad Bhagavatam; so, sound has 4 dimensions: vaikarik, madya, para, pashianti. First dimension is the outer portion of the sound, what you speak, what you hear, and what is going in your tape recorder. Next two levels are on the subtle platform of the mind and intelligence. The fourth level is called shabda-brahma and goes from soul to soul." The transcendental sound can be uttered by the realized soul and imbibe the audiance with seva vasana (the seed of the desire to serve the DIVINE COUPLE- if the one that utters the sound is a RUPA-ANUGA.) Only a sat guru (the one that have seen Krsna face to face) can give the transcendetal sound. He is the only one who can give real initiation through the transcendental sound in Hari-nama and diksa (Gopala-mantra, Kama-gayatri-mantra, Gayatri-mantra...) but bhaktis tu bhagavad bhakta sangena parijayate SAT-SANGA prapyate pumbhih SUKRITI purva sancite The inclination for bhakti is awakened by the association with the devottes of the Lord And the association with the pure devotees (SAT SANGA) can be attained by the accumulated effect of SUKRITI (eternal pious activities) performed over many life times. (Brihan Naradia Purana 4.33) More details in the article Sat Guru and the transcendental sound.
  5. Srila B.Vedanta Narayana Maharaja then led the devotees in singing Krsna Deva! Bhavantam Vande, and then explained that if you want to please Srimati Radharani, you will have to sing Krsna Deva! Bhavantam Vande; this song especially gives Her pleasure. And, if you want to please Yugala Kisora, both Radharani and Krsna, you must sing Sri Gaura-gita. This song, which reveals the moods of Srimati Radharani and also of Caitanya Mahaprabhu, gives great pleasure to Yugala Kisora. The author of this song, Sri Radha-mohana dasa, is a highly qualified Vaisnava in our sampradaya. In the last line of his bhajana he sings, paramakincana-kincana-nara-gana-karuna-vitarana-silam [i hanker to relish the unparalleled pastimes of the greatly munificent Sri Gaurasundara, who distributes mercy in the form of nama prema to the supremely fortunate niskincana souls (those whose only possession is love of Krsna)]. He considers himself to be very akincana (fallen and worthless). Although he is very great, still he says, "I am akincana. " Ksobhita-durmati-radha-mohana-namaka-nirupam-lilam [the fallen and foolish Radha-Mohana sings in a mood of great distress]. Duramati – here he says, "I am duramati. I am a very low-minded person." Ksobhita means one whose heart is disturbed. Why is the author's heart now disturbed? Nidhuvana nagari mohita-manasa-vikathita-gadgada-bhasam [The heart of Krsna, in the form of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, is thoroughly immersed in Srimati Radhika's unnatojjvala prema. That Caitanya Mahaprabhu now lovingly extols Sri Krsna in a choked voice]. Nidhuvana is one of the topmost vanas (forests) in Vrndavana, where Yugala Kisora enjoy Their sweet pastimes. Srimati Radharani is the nagari (heroine) of this Nidhuvana. Here, Krsnacandra serves Srimati Radharani from the beginning to the end of night, and still He cannot serve Her completely. By remembering this type of pastime, Radha-mohana dasa's heart is agitated. This pastime of Nidhuvana is the crown jewel of all pastimes (lila-mukut-mani).
  6. Short overwiew on the densification of material tattvas The glance of Maha Vishnu and sexual energy are the stimuli 1.Ahankar + Tama guna -> Sound -> Ether + Raja guna -> hearing sense 2.Ahankar + Tama guna + Sound ->Prana -> Luft + Raja guna -> sense of touch 3.Ahankar + Tama guna + Prana ->Form -> Feur + Raja guna -> visual sense 4.Ahankar + Tama guna + Form -> Taste -> Wasser + Raja guna -> taste sense 5.Ahankar + Tama guna + Taste -> Smell -> Erde + Raja guna -> smell sense As we can see by the densification of material tattvas there is a more increasing amount of ahankar and tama guna in the more dense objects of the senses, and a more increasing raja guna begining from hearing sense and going up to the smell sense.
  7. Nitamba-bimba-lambamana-puspa-mekhala-gune [Your rounded hips are decorated with dangling flowers and tiny tinkling jeweled-bells hang from the flower belt on your charmingly slender waist]. No one can explain the meaning because it is unfathomable, and . In his realized state he could only write down his realizations in his books. Later, when Srila Visvanatha Cakravartipada read them, he began laughing and feeling shyness in his heart. Thus, he was qualified to give a tika (commentary) on the verses of Srila Rupa Gosvami. We are really very unfortunate: we have the opportunity for this type of wealth, but still we try to collect the wealth of this material world. The bhavas of Srimati Radharani are the most valuable wealth in this world. Anyone who has once tasted this wealth can reject all material wealth. Unfortunately, however, we are still searching for insignificant material wealth. Srila B.V. Narayana Maharaja then led the devotees in singing Krsna Deva!
  8. The Lord again asked Ramananda Raya to speak further, and Ramananda Raya replied, "Pure devotional service without any touch of speculative knowledge is the essence of perfection." Ramananda Raya continued, "Lord Brahma said, 'My dear Lord, those devotees who have thrown away the impersonal conception of the Absolute Truth and have therefore abandoned discussing empiric philosophical truths should hear from self-realized devotees (sat mukharita) about Your holy name, form, pastimes and qualities. They should completely follow the principles of devotional service and remain free from illicit sex, gambling, intoxication and animal slaughter. Surrendering themselves fully with body, words and mind, they can live in any asrama or social status. Indeed, You are conquered by such persons, although You are always unconquerable.' " At this point, Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu replied, "This is all right, but still you can speak more on the subject."
  9. 1.9 By the agitation of water through the glance of Maha Visnu mixed with the false ego and tama gun was created the smell . The principle of smell is the earth. 1.10 The earth transformed throungh raja guna gives birth to the faculty to smell.
  10. Asesa-hava-bhava-dhira-hira-hara-bhusite [You are adorned with all Your various deep emotions (anuraga, dhiradhira, kilakincita, etc.) for Krsna, which shine on Your person like a diamond necklace]. Hava is explained in Srila Rupa Gosvami's Sri Ujjvala Nilamani. They are gestures of Radharani such as Her sidelong glances towards Krsna, and also the tilting of Her head. When She acts in these ways, Krsna becomes completely powerless and begins trembling. Bhava means ecstasies or moods, or a combination of varieties of moods like kilakincita bhava, and these are also elaborately explained in Sri Ujjvala Nilamani. If one is qualified he can read Sri Ujjvala Nilamani, but he must do so under the guidance of exalted Vaisnavas. In that way, by the mercy of Guru, he can realize all those moods. These verses can give you the highest perfection. These mantras and guru are so powerful that by their mercy they can manifest all transcendental moods and deep meanings in your heart. Unfortunately, however, we have no faith in guru or the power of the mantras. (as spoken further by Srila Bhaktivedanta Narayana Maharaja)
  11. Ramananda Raya then replied, "Devotional service mixed with empiric knowledge is the essence of perfection." Ramananda Raya continued, brahma-bhutah prasannatma na socati na kanksati samah sarvesu bhutesu mad-bhaktim labhate param "According to the Bhagavad-gita, 'One who is thus transcendentally situated at once realizes the Supreme Brahman and becomes fully joyful. He never laments or desires to have anything. He is equally disposed toward every living entity. In that state he attains pure devotional service unto Me.' " After hearing this, the Lord, as usual, rejected it, considering it to be external devotional service.
  12. and Mathura or Dvaraka Krsna too, somewhat. This realization comes by the mercy of bhajan shiksa guru. Vijaya-kumara: Krsna has a great host of wonderful spiritual qualities. Krsna is the only hero (nayaka) of the wonderful and spiritual madhura rasa. Now I can fully understand all this. Through your mercy my heart has become purified, and bhakti based on ruci has arisen within it.
  13. Ramananda Raya continued, " 'Occupational duties are described in the religious scriptures. If one analyzes them, he can fully understand their qualities and faults and then give them up completely to render service unto the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Such a person is considered a first-class man.' "As stated in scripture [bg. 18.66], 'After giving up all kinds of religious and occupational duties, if you come to Me, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, and take shelter, I will give you protection from all of life's sinful reactions. Do not worry.' " After hearing Ramananda Raya speak in this way, Lord Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu again rejected his statement and said, "Go ahead and say something more."
  14. Ramananda Raya replied, "To give up one's occupational duties in the varnasrama is the essence of perfection."
  15. The worship of devotees engaged in the Lord's service in madhurya-rasa is the supreme spiritual activity. ye me bhakta-janah partha na me bhaktas ca te janah mad-bhaktanam ca ye bhaktas te me bhakta-tama matah "Lord Krsna told Arjuna, 'Those who are My direct devotees are actually not My devotees, but those who are the devotees of My servant are factually My devotees.' The most dear servant of Krsna is Srimati Radhika and the servants of Srimati Radhika are Krsna s most near and dear. In the purport to CC Madhya 11.31 Srila Bhaktivedanta Svami Maharaj Prabhupada Shows his understanding of Gaura vani: Although all the rasas are on the transcendental platform, madhurya-rasa is the supreme transcendental mellow. Consequently it is concluded that the worship of devotees engaged in the Lord's service in madhurya-rasa is the supreme spiritual activity. Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu and His followers mainly worship Lord Krsna in madhurya-rasa. Other Vaisnava acaryas recommended worship up to vatsalya-rasa. Therefore Srila Rupa Gosvami in his Vidagdha-madhava (1.2) describes Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu's cult as supreme: anarpita-carim cirat karunayavatirnah kalau samarpayitum unnatojjvala-rasam sva-bhakti-sriyam Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu appeared in this Age of Kali to exhibit the superexcellence of madhurya-rasa, a gift never previously bestowed by any acarya or incarnation. Consequently Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu is accepted as the most magnanimous incarnation. It is He only who distributed (the conjugal) love (unnatojjvala) of Krsna while exhibiting the superexcellence of loving Krsna in the conjugal rasa. The worship of devotees engaged in the Lord's service in madhurya-rasa is the supreme spiritual activity.
  16. Ramananda replied, "To offer the results of one's activities to Krsna is the essence of all perfection." yat karosi yad asnasi yaj juhosi dadasi yat yat tapasyasi kaunteya tat kurusva mad-arpanam " 'My dear son of Kunti, whatever you do, whatever you eat, whatever you offer in sacrifice, whatever you give in charity, and whatever austerities you perform, all the results of such activities should be offered to Me, Krsna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead.' " Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu said. "This is also external," "Please proceed and speak further on this matter."
  17. Gosvami: Baba, please listen carefully, and I will speak. In madhura rasa Krsna is the visaya (the object of love) and His dearly beloved gopis are the asraya (the containers of love). And both together are the alambana of this rasa. Vijaya-kumara: What are the features of Krsna when He is the visaya in madhura rasa? Gosvami: Ah! What a sweet question. Krsna's complexion is the hue of a monsoon cloud. He is charming. All His features are sweet and auspicious. He is a strong budding youth. His youthfulness is always new and fresh. He speaks eloquently and sweetly. He is intelligent, splendid, skilful, clever, sober, happy, grateful, sincere and He is controlled by love. He is profound super excellent and famous. He steals the hearts of young damsels, and He is ever fresh, the enjoyer of incomparable transcendental pastimes, He is extremely beautiful, and He is the most deary and beloved who plays upon His vamsi. Krsna is the only person who has these qualities. The glory of all the Kamadevas is at once eclipsed by a mere glimpse of the glory of Krsna's feet. Lord Krsna's sidelong glance enchants the hearts of all. Krsna is the great treasure of transcendental pastimes. He is the good fortune attained by the gopis.
  18. Ananga-ranga-mangala-prasanga-bhangura-bhruvam… [in the immensely auspicious drama enacted with loving playfulness (prema-vilas) on the amorous battlefield, your eyebrows curving like bows suddenly unleash the arrows of your sidelong glances, piercing Nanda-nandana with amorous delusion and bringing Him under reverential submission…]. In this verse, every word is a mantra which describes the moods of Srimati Radharani, and especially Her topmost moods of madanakya-mahabhava. These moods can be understood only by the mercy of Guru and Vaisnavas, and also by those who have previous samskaras (impressions on the heart made by devotional activities of this and previous lives).
  19. Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu ordered Ramananda Raya to recite a verse from the revealed scriptures concerning the ultimate goal of life. Ramananda replied that if one executes the prescribed duties of his social position, he awakens his original Krsna consciousness. The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Visnu, is worshiped by the proper execution of prescribed duties in the system of varna and asrama. There is no other way to satisfy the Supreme Personality of Godhead. One must be situated in the institution of the four varnas and asramas." The Lord replied, "This is external. You had better tell Me of some other means."
  20. Ramananda Raya replied You are the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Narayana Himself, and I am only a government servant interested in materialistic activities. Indeed, I am the lowest amongst men of the fourth caste. You do not fear the Vedic injunctions stating that You should not associate with a sudra. You were not contemptuous of my touch, although in the Vedas You are forbidden to associate with sudras. You have come here specifically to deliver me. You are so merciful that You alone can deliver all fallen souls. My dear Lord, sometimes great saintly persons go to the homes of householders, although these householders are generally low-minded. When a saintly person visits their homes, one can understand that it is for no other purpose than to benefit the householders. Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu said "I wish to hear from you about Lord Krsna. Indeed, My mind is inclined to desire this; therefore I wish to see you again." Ramananda Raya replied, "My Lord, although You have come to correct me, a fallen soul, my mind is not yet purified simply by seeing You. Please stay for five or seven days and kindly cleanse my polluted mind. After that much time, my mind will certainly be pure."
  21. Preamble Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, who is known as Gauranga, is the ocean of all conclusive knowledge in devotional service. He empowered Sri Ramananda Raya, who may be likened to a cloud of devotional service. This cloud was filled with the water of all the conclusive purports of devotional service and was empowered by the ocean to spread this water over the ocean of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu Himself. Thus the ocean of Caitanya Mahaprabhu became filled with the jewels of the knowledge of pure devotional service. When Ramananda Raya saw the wonderful sannyasi, he was struck with wonder. He went to Him and immediately offered his respectful obeisances, falling down flat like a rod. Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu then inquired whether he was Ramananda Raya, and he replied, "Yes, I am Your very low servant, and I belong to the sudra community." Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu then embraced Sri Ramananda Raya very firmly. Indeed, both the master and the servant almost lost consciousness due to ecstatic love. Their natural love for each other was awakened in them both, and they embraced and fell down on the ground. Srila Ramananda Raya was an incarnation of the gopi Visakha. Since Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu was Lord Krsna Himself, there was naturally an awakening of love between Visakha and Krsna. Sri Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu is the combination of Srimati Radharani and Krsna. The gopi Visakha is a principal gopi assisting Srimati Radharani. Ramananda Raya and Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu embraced, since their natural love also was awakened The nearby brahmanas began to think, "We can see that this sannyasi has a luster like the effulgence of Brahman, but how is it He is crying upon embracing a sudra, a member of the fourth caste in the social order? They thought, "This Ramananda Raya is the Governor of Madras, a highly learned and grave person, a maha-pandita, but upon touching this sannyasi he has become restless like a madman. Mahaprabhu smiled and began to speak as follows."Sarvabhauma Bhattacarya spoke of your good qualities, and he made a great endeavor to convince Me to meet you. Ramananda Raya replied, "Sarvabhauma Bhattacarya thinks of me as his servant. Even in my absence he is very careful to do me good.
  22. Srila Maharaja then led the devotees in singing Srimati Radharani's astakam, Sri Radha-Krpa-Kataksa-Stava-Raja, after which he explained that the verses in this bhajana are just like mantras ( mantra does not mean "prayer"; it is the actual presence of the mantra's istadevi or worshipable deity) and in fact every word in each verse is also a mantra. This bhajana is just like a desire tree; it can fulfill all of our desires. Also, every verse of Srimad Bhagavatam is a mantra, and one can attain siddhi (perfection) from each of them. These verses can fulfill even the topmost desire, but unfortunately we have no faith in this. We are chanting the maha-mantra and we have no faith in it; but this and all other mantras are truly kalpa-vrksa, desire trees. Every sloka of Srimad-Bhagavatam is like kama-denu (the cows of Goloka Vrndavana, who can fulfill all of one's desires). Not only one kama-denu – each sloka can be compared to millions of kama-denus.
  23. Mathura, India: August 31, 2002 After Srila Bhaktivedanta Narayana Gosvami Maharaja led the devotees in singing Sri Nandanandan-astakam, he explained that this song is the vandana (prayers of glorification) of Krsna. Hearing this song pleases Him, but He is most pleased when the devotee worships and glorifies those who are most dear to Him. If one does vandana of pastimes such as those found in Sri Ujjvala Nilamani and other Gosvami granthas (scriptures) wherein Krsna bows His head at the lotus feet of Srimati Radharani, Krsna will be most pleased. Srila Maharaja said that if we really want to please Krsna, we should sing Radha-Krpa-Kataksa-Stava-Raja, which is the glorification of Srimati Radharani. Therefore this song, Nanda-nandanastakam, which indicates the glorification of Krsna, gives pleasure to Sri Radha.
  24. However, in the spiritual world the madhura rasa is the most pure of all the rasas. It is filled with purity, splendour and wonderful sweetness. In the spiritual world when Krsna, the supreme male (purush), meets with His potencies, who are all female, Their activities are supremely pure. Their activities are the root of spiritual reality. However, the perverted reflection of those activities in the material world is degraded and a source of embarrassment because they are opposed to fundamental tattva. In tattva, one jiva is not the enjoyer of another jiva. The truth is that Krsna is the only enjoyer, and all the jivas are to be enjoyed by Him. The situation in which the jiva becomes the enjoyer is against his eternal dharma. In this way the material madhura rasa contradicts the original spiritual reality.
  25. 1.7By the agitation of fire through the glance of Maha Vishnu and through the false ego (ahankar) in the mode of ignorance (tama gun) was created the taste. The form of taste is the water. 1.8The water agitated by raja gun gave birth to the taste faculty
