If you read Bible, you will find that many kinds of destructions have been mentioned before Jesus comes, earthquake being one of them. So, this means that Bible refers to destructive earthquakes. The magnitude of an earthquake does not indicate the level of destruction. The level of destruction is indicated by the intensity of an earthquake.

W should see if more destructions are hppening by earthquake now than in past. One more important point. It has been approximately 2000 years since Jesus left. So, we can not consider what happened in the last few decades; we have to consider what happened in the last 2000 years.

Luke says that there will be great earthquake. Of course, we can say that the meaning of the word great here may not be exactly the same as it is currently defined in Geophysics. Earthquakes of magnitude 8 and above (in richter scale) are known as great earthquakes. But we can definitely say that the earthquakes that do not cause much trouble can not be considered as great earthquakes. I do not think that Luke was talking of earthquakes of magnitude 6 or lower.

Plate techtonics can be used but only for knowing about great earthquakes of the past and that too not very accurately.

As the table shows, it is wrong to say that the no. of earthquakes (of magnitude > 7) have been increasing over the last 50 years.

So far lesser magnitude earthquakes are concerned, it is possible that they have increased. But it is also possible that we observe more of them because of more no. of geophones. Anyway, it does not seem believable that Jesus was talking of such low magnitude earthquakes.

Before we continue, could some one post whatever data is available on earthquakes, so we can see what it means that earthquakes have increased.

I have made a post related to this. I can post the actual no. of earthquakes per year also, but I am finding difficulty in making table here. I am trying.

Although it may seem that we are having more earthquakes, earthquakes of magnitude 7.0 or greater have remained fairly constant. A partial explanation may lie in the fact that in the last twenty years, we have definitely had an increase in the number of earthquakes we have been able to locate each year. This is because of the tremendous increase in the number of seismograph stations in the world and the many improvements in global communications. In 1931, there were about 350 stations operating in the world; today, there are more that 8,000 stations and the data now comes in rapidly from these stations by electronic mail, internet and satellite. This increase in the number of stations and the more timely receipt of data has allowed us and other seismological centers to locate earthquakes more rapidly and to locate many small earthquakes which were undetected in earlier years. Also, because of the improvements in communications and the increased interest in the environment and natural disasters, the public now learns about more earthquakes.

The records show that the long-term average for the number of earthquakes exceeded in 1970, 1971, 1992, 1995, and 1996, but there was less than half the average number of events in 1984, 1986, 1988 and 1989. The number of events in 2001, is once again been below the long-term average.

Even if it is accepted that earthquakes have really increased, how do we know that Jesus is going to come soon? May be that after a few decades the earthquakes will be much more and that will be the time when Jesus will come? It is written in Mathew that we will not receive light from sun and moon when Jesus has to come again. Do we have any evidence to say that such a day is near?

It depends on whether one puts faith in those Vedic predictions, or in the saints who make such statements.

Please correct me if I have understood you wrongly. But it seems you are saying that if one puts faith in Vedic predictions then he can not put faith in the saints and vice versa. But, is it really the case? If we consider vedas as infallible and these saints also as infallible, then can't we say that the statements made by the saints will never contradict the Vedic predictions?

Very often, whether there is any discrimination or not depends on how we analyze things. Let us take a simple example. Two students write the same exam. One of them answers the question very well and gets good marks. Another does not do well and gets less marks. Assume that the same examiner checked their answer scripts. Did the examiner indulge in any kind of discrimination? If we just see the marks given, then we find that there was discrimination. But, if we also see the reason, then we find that there was no discrimination.

In another thread it was mentioned that Christians are evangelizing in India. I must say I think they will be very successful with this traditional message. For those who are suffering, who have nothing, the message of Christ will be very appealing.

The way evangelization is being done is very bad. There are many examples I have read or heard about. But, let me give two examples; one happened with somebody I know closely and another happened with myself.

About three years back, some christians missionaries came to one of my aunt's reidence. They suggested her to convert to Christianity. They even said that they would bear all the expenses for her daughter's marriage. I am happy that they were unsuccesful.

About one year back, I was travelling on train. My cousin was with me. One christian came there and started talking to us. He gave us some books (just a few pages thick) that contained teachings of Christ. I took those with thanks. He asked us why we don't convert to christianity. I asked back why we should. Do you know what was his reply?

He replied, "Christianity is a very modern religion. By accepting this religion, you can enjoy life to its fullest extent. In this religion, wine, sex and food are freely allowed."

I was speechless to hear this. My cousin burst out laughing. Then that person left.
