"Since there was no security forces in proximity, the injured were shifted to hospital only at 8am in the morning." For centuries, Kashmir's Hindus - known as Pandits - lived peacefully alongside the area's Muslim majority. Since then, the axe has fallen on trees — by February, almost 30 full-grown trees were felled and the branches of another 60 trees ‘‘trimmed’’ — in order to widen the road. ‘‘When we approached Anand Collectorate officials, we were told that they would ensure that no trees were cut. But the promise has not been kept. Further, in the name of beautification, authorities have pruned branches on the side that falls on the road,’’ said Dhaval Patel of Vidyanagar Nature Club. He added that none of the trees were ‘‘in the middle of the road or causing traffic hurdles.’’ Patel alleges that the branches are being cut in such a way that ‘‘there’s minimal chance of them growing again.’’ Volunteers and supporters of the club — a large number of them students — also participated in a rally in December to protest against the axing of trees, but that failed to draw a response. Shishir Vaghela, a Second Year student at BVM Engineering College, said that in two months branches of more than 20 trees have been cut. ‘‘There are a number of colleges in this area and students have to walk in the heat. What’s worse is that the Government talks about increasing the green cover, but goes on a tree-cutting drive,’’ he added. Flooded with cases of harassment by MFIs for repayments and after an open revolt by the women thrift group members, the Government officials had begun an in-depth enquiry. Preliminary reports received by the Society for Elimination of Rural Poverty from Krishna, West and East Godavari, Guntur and Prakasam districts indicate that more than 60 members had committed suicide in the last few months. However, officials suspect that the number could be more than 200 as the MFIs had threatened the family members against reporting the matter to police saying they would be deprived of insurance. A report by the Chief Executive Officer, SERP, T Vijay Kumar submitted to the Government this month had cautioned the Government that on account of crushing debt burden, a number of suicides and `unnatural deaths' had already taken place. "There is an imminent danger of more suicides occurring," the report observed. Mr. Vijay Kumar told The Hindu over phone from Kolkata on Saturday, where he is deputed as election observer, that many 'unnatural deaths' had taken place where the MFIs had distributed more money. Teams constituted "A report from the Krishna Collector had documented 10 such deaths. Officials also found prima facie evidence in 11 other cases in the same district," he said and added that village-wise teams were being constituted to enquire into deaths. In this age of Kali almost any work except direct devotional service for Lord Caitanya's Samkirtan mission is somehow linked with sinful activity. There're many devotees who work as teachers at karmi schools and who have to educate their students to become fit for successfully perfoming fruitive activities (karma). These devotees argue, I'm using the salary in the service of Krishna therefore it is karma-yoga and doesnt create future material bondage. Yesterday a grhastha devotee (his guru fell down) phoned me that he got a well paid job at a betting-agency which sells sport bets, and in that gambling casino they of course also serve alcoholic drinks and people smoke. Till now my understanding was that such kind of work for an aspiring Vaishnava-devotee is not acceptable and tama-guna - too heavy future karmic bondage. Jayananda prabhu (ACBSP) was a taxi driver and Srila Prabhupada accepted Jayananda prabhu's chauffeuring the karmis to their different materialistic destinations and offer all his earnings to the temple. But where actually is the limit? Can a householder Vaishnava devotee argue, the salary is so big, therefore I'm working now in a butcher's shop, but use all that money in Krishna's service? What to tell that above mentioned devotee, any suggestions?

Murder trial - A woman who survived a 2003 Portland attack tells a jury what her husband said before he died Tuesday, April 11, 2006 ANNE SAKER The door slowly opened, and into the bedroom walked Satya Krishna Dasa, covered in blood. Staring at the quaking woman sitting on the bed, he put a finger to his lips for silence. He sat beside her. He put one hand on her shoulder. Then with the other hand, the woman testified Monday, Dasa pulled out a steak knife and slipped the blade between her ribs. Her 2-year-old son, still in pajamas, stood in a corner crying out, "No, Mama! No, Mama!" The woman on the bed, Rebeca Webster, survived that night to pour out her memories to a Multnomah County Circuit Court jury on the first day of Dasa's trial on charges of aggravated murder and attempted aggravated murder. She told a story of two couples bonded in Hare Krishna beliefs and destroyed by infidelity and jealousy. If the seven men and five women convict Dasa, 31, he could face the death penalty. The trial before Circuit Judge Michael McShane is expected to last at least a month. In her opening statement, Deputy District Attorney Stacy Heyworth said that on the night of Dec. 19, 2003, Dasa drove to the Portland home of Yuri Bukshin, 31, once his best friend. Heyworth said Dasa bludgeoned Bukshin with a socket wrench then picked up a chef's knife and stabbed him repeatedly. Officials are questioning the parish's right to use the land, while the church's registration application has been denied. </TD></TR><TR><TD> </TD></TR><TR><TD>Jailed Hare Krishna devotee Cheper Annaniyazova was finally transferred from the women's prison in the capital Ashgabad [Ashgabat] to the women's labour camp in Dashoguz [Dashhowuz] on 23 January, Forum 18 News Service has learned. The transfer – which had long been expected - occurred within days of her failed bid to have her seven-year prison sentence overturned at an appeal hearing at the Ashgabad city court in mid-January. Her state of health and conditions in the labour camp remain unknown. The labour camp in Dashoguz in northern Turkmenistan close to the border with Uzbekistan is the only one for women in the country. Its address is: Dashoguz, ulica Ilyalinskaya, Zhenskaya Koloniya DZ-K/8. The exile Turkmenistan Helsinki Foundation reported last December that the camp has six barracks housing prisoners (though many have to sleep in the open air), as well as a work area with a brick factory, sewing and wool workshops and a bakery. It noted that bribery is rampant as a way for prisoners to escape the harshest work. "Those that don't pay have to carry out the heaviest work in the industrial zone," the group reported. It said the most hazardous work is cleaning wool. Even acquiring a decent place to sleep requires bribes. The group said the camp also has a closed section with about 400 high-profile prisoners, including former top officials who have fallen from favour. It remains unknown in which part of the camp Annaniyazova is housed. Annaniyazova, who was born in 1968 and was one of the first people in Turkmenistan to become a Hare Krishna devotee, was accused under three charges, two of which related to illegally crossing the border three years ago when she went to Kazakhstan to live at the Hare Krishna temple in Almaty. The third accusation was, sources told Forum 18, not made public at the trial in November 2005 and the extra sentence imposed in the wake of the accusation was likewise not made public, though the sentence she received exceeds the maximum penalty possible under the known accusations. It is thought within Turkmenistan that the heavy sentence was imposed at the behest of the MSS (Ministry of State Security) secret police, in order to intimidate the Hare Krishna community. Despite a reluctance by the court to give out its verdict in writing as it is supposed to do (courts in Turkmenistan rarely give out written verdicts, especially in sensitive cases), Annaniyazova was able to challenge the verdict on appeal, but this was unsuccessful (see F18News 10 February 2006 http://www.forum18.org/Archive.php?article_id=725). After former chief mufti Nasrullah ibn Ibadullah was sentenced to 22 years' imprisonment in March 2004 at a closed trial in Ashgabad, the Turkmen government refused repeated international requests to make the verdict public (see F18News 8 March 2004 http://www.forum18.org/Archive.php?article_id=271). Meanwhile, the exile Turkmen Initiative for Human Rights reported in March that the Russian Orthodox Church has been unable to complete its new church under construction in Dashoguz. The group said the foundation and walls are only partly built and work has been stopped for more than a year. The group added that the parish previously had registration with the Adalat (Fairness or Justice) Ministry, but this was revoked in the wake of the 2003 new religion law and the parish has been unable to regain it. The authorities question the parish's right to use the land, but have not obstructed worship in a portakabin, the only Orthodox place of worship in northern Turkmenistan. The second Russian Orthodox church in the town of Turkmenabad (formerly Charjou) finally gained state registration in early January, six years after it reopened for worship and applied for registration (see F18News 10 February 2006 http://www.forum18.org/Archive.php?article_id=725). Hindus actually dont convert others to become members of the Hindu community. Hindus generally argue, you're only a Hindu when you're born into a Hindu family. So in sum Hindus consider Hinduism as a bodily designation and not as spiritual quality of the soul. Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu was in fact the only One who successfully converted Muslims away from their believe. However, He didnt convert the Muslims to become Hindus, but He converted the Muslims to become servants of Lord Sri Krishna. Since serving the Supreme Lord Sri Krishna is the eternal function of our souls it is above bodily designations like - Christian, Moslem, American, Buddhist, Hindu or Judaism. But unfortunately Hindus arent interested to understand who is Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu and they arent interested to adopt Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu's special method to successfully convert Muslims to become Krishna bhaktas. Devotees of Lord Krishna are totally above the platform of bodily designations and actually benefitting society by distributing pure konwledge about our eternal relationship of Lord Sri Krishna, and when all the people become situated in pure ever-increasing love and spiritual happiness all the problems in society will be solved. As long we remain on the platform of bodily designation the fighting among members of different groups will go on. Since Vaishnavism is part of India's cultural tradition Hindus are well advised to become situated in the teachings of the great Vaishnava acarayas and activate the soul to become fixed in the original position of serving Sri Krishna in total transcendental happiness and just by associating with such pure devotees of Lord Krishna, Muslim will automatically give up this Islam which keeps one's soul cut off from actual spiritual bliss. This is the secret, people always go there where they find actual joy. Doesnt matter what they were before. Therefore Srila Prabhupada attracted thousands and thousands of Westerners to bhakti-yoga. Not because of the teachings, not because of presenting something new. All the people who met Srila Prabhupada felt that he is situated in the original happiness of the soul and they also wanted to attain that state. Prabhupada converted many Muslims, Africans, Europeans, Chinese, Australians, all those people started to follow the path of bhakti because they wanted to attain what Prabhupada showed them by his own example, real spiritual joy within the soul. Therefore, whenever it is reported that Muslims are proliferating, like it was recently reported in France, like rats, the preaching of pure devotional service to Lord Sri Krishna isnt realy in a healthy condition. More Hindus should get qualified as strong preachers of sanatana-dharma. Just like the Indian military, India has the biggest military in the world, over 1 Million soldiers. So, if India could qualify to actually train up 1 Million pure Vaishnavas of Lord Sri Krishna, Millions of Muslims immediately would give up Islam forever, like Sanatana Goswami or Rupa Goswami, very easily. First they were high appointees of the Muslim government, King, but when they met Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu they immediately gave up their Muslim identity.

It has initiated work on setting up a food-processing facility at Mahadevpura near Srirangapatna where its model ’organic farming’ farm is located. “The cost of setting up and operating the facility could be around Rs 5 crore to Rs 6 crore. Besides our own contribution, we are looking at the possibility of raising resources from financial institutions/banks,” sources told ET. The foundation was able to attract about 50-100 farmers every month to grow the organic way, sources added. Besides running the farm, the foundation has around 500 farmer members, who practice organic farming. The total annual output produced by these members is believed to be around 100 tonne, with spices accounting for about 55% to 60% of the produce. These 500 farmers are spread through out Karnataka and neighbouring Kerala and produce a wide range of agri-products like spices and foodgrains. Organic chilli is grown in places like Raichur and Chitradurga while farmers in northern Kerala grow spices like ginger and pineapple. Once the agri-processing facility is operational, the foundation believes that it can secure a higher price for the produce. Typically, organic farm products cost five or six times more compared to the inorganic products. The foundation was also looking at the possibility of using the internet for promoting organic farming in India. “There has to be a process of educating and providing information. With access to quick and easy logistics, it would not be difficult to use the net for selling organic produce,” sources added. The foundation, which played a major role in promoting Indian vanilla in the global markets, continues to actively promote this crop although international prices have declined. It is reported to have handled over 300 tonne of green beans.
