So this counts as your 16 rounds for today? /images/graemlins/laugh.gif -
Ben Kingsley may play HDG Srila Bon Maharaj. These are Ben Kingsley's screen credits, as well as a list of roles he is slated to play all the way up until the year 2007. http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001426/ Nothing about playing Srila Bhakti Hridaya Bon Maharaj. /images/graemlins/frown.gif Is he even aware of this role? Personally I'd be very interested in seeing a movie about Srila Prabhupad and the movement, but I fear that the inevitable Hollywood or Bollywood spin will inevitably lead to some serious sadhu-ninda. What about the Krishna cartoon planned by an Indian animation studio? I hope it's done tastefully. Has anyone ever seen Japanese anime? I've heard some of that can get very vulgar. If they can do a Krishna cartoon but in a very tasteful way meant for children and family but beautifully and artfully done, this would be an amazing contribution.

And where might I purchase one of these 1972 Bhagavad Gitas?

Haribol Prabhu, Is this why you asked about CC Madhya Lila 15.108? /images/graemlins/smile.gif I am curious to know the author of the article's affiliation. They don't appear to be of ISKCON or IRM. No doubt, the maha mantra is all powerful, and even the uninitiated can partake of its benefit. Of course, Srila Gour Govinda Maharaj was a powerful devotee by the time he first met Srila Prabhupad: --- His whole life prior to meeting his spiritual master His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Srila Prabhupada, was one of purity, preparation and devotion. In search of his eternal spiritual master he left home with only two gamchas (short dhoti), a bamboo stick, a begging bowl, and no money. He completely depended on Krishna for everything. He would walk and talk about Krishna to the devotees, eat whatever Krishna would provide and sleep under any tree at night. As a mendicant, he visited many Holy tirthas, from the Himalayas to Cape Comorin in South India. Meeting Srila Prabhupada During his first meeting with Srila Prabhupada in Sri Vrindavan, Srila Prabhupada asked him, Have you taken sannyasa? He said No. Then Srila Prabhupada said immediately, “I will give you sannyasa.” Thereafter, Srila Prabhupada gave him first initiation in Sridham Mayapur, second initiation in Bombay, and sannyasa in Sri Vrindavan, India. A Devotee from Birth Srila Prabhupada quoted the following verse at the time of giving Sannyasa to Srila Gour Govinda Swami, “The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: One who is unattached to the fruits of his work and who works as he is obligated, is in the renounced order of life, and he is the true mystic, not he who lights no fire and performs no duty.” He uttered this verse and said, “He is a real sannyasi” and then gave him the sannyasa mantra and danda. Shortly thereafter, many sannyasis and GBC members started complaining, “How has he taken sannyasa? He is a new man!” Then Srila Prabhupada told them, “He is a devotee from his birth - you are new men!” --- Also look at the life of Sriman George Harrison: Sriman George Harrison has certainly done an unique service by contributing $19,000 for publishing my Krsna book. When I was in London, he saw me four times and he was very submissive and devout and he was not at all proud of his very well-to-do material position. He has a reputation as a first class musician and he is considered to be rich or as they say one of the richest men in the world. Still he was not at all puffed up, but was humble, meek, polite, and devout. So all these qualities and his service to Krishna will certainly help him in his advancement of Krishna Consciousness. Thus I see that although he is not an initiated disciple, still he has been trying to help us in so many ways. This change of his heart has been possible by the endeavor of Syamasundara.. Syamasundara. tried to win his friendship by all means and the result obtained thereof was offered to Krishna. In the London Temple the first class Italian marble throne worth about $3,000 was also contributed by George through the service of Syamasundara.. So actually George's leaning towards Krishna Consciousness has been greatly influenced by Syamasundara.'s endeavor. Srimad-Bhagavatam recommends that we shall employ our life, money, intelligence, and words for the service of the Lord. So Syamasundara. employed his intelligence to bring George Harrison into the service of Krishna Consciousness and thus George's money has been employed in Krishna's service. This is the whole process of Krishna Consciousness--First of all one should dedicate his life for Krishna's service; that is very nice. If he cannot dedicate his whole life, then let him devote his money; if he cannot devote his money, then let him devote his intelligence; and if he cannot devote his intelligence also, then let him devote his voice in Krishna Consciousness by uttering Hare Krishna Mantra. Therefore Hare Krishna Mantra is the greatest common factor for self-realization. Please preach this philosophy whole-heartedly and Krishna will be very much pleased upon you. Srila Prabhupad's letter to Bhagavan das, Los Angeles, 8 February, 1970 --- However, just as was discussed on your thread about CC Madhya Lila 15.108, initiation is a great boon to expedite the benefits of Hari Nama.

One time, I fell in love with one young Vaisnavi who had so many natural opulences, she would make all the apsaras of the heavenly planets jealous. My heart would palpate anytime I saw her. But our sampradayas were different, and, at the urging of her elders, she would have nothing to do with me because of this. I have met others throughout the years, but my thoughts eventually dwell back to this vaisnavi. I have not heard of her in years, and no doubt she is married already (I can't see how not), and I thought she was the one for a long time. I'm telling you though, even if you don't meet anyone for years, the pain will indeed fade with time. People I tell this story to tell me "don't worry Krsna will find you someone else when you're ready" or "Krsna is saving someone nice for you when you're ready for grhasta ashrama". Just be patient. How old are you? You couldn't be older than 22. One day you may very well meet some young woman and you'll say "wow we are perfect in every way, I'm glad I didn't marry that other girl before." now my belief in god has got shattered. i thought rayaru and krishna will understand me & will keep me happy. Krsna and Raghavendra Swami are not there to make us happy. It is the other way around. Sometimes KRSNA makes events like these happen to aspiring devotees to teach them how stupid the material world is, so we will be attracted to Sri Krsna all the more. You say that your enemies were given a darshan. Where do you come up with this theory? Just because it appears they were given a good material result? Watch them again in a few years, maybe they will be in deep ruin. This is the nature of the material world. You've tried to make very nice sevas here on this message board with your posts. Just give it some time. Do not hurt yourself over something crazy like this. I really think if you go on parikrama of some holy place you will feel much better.

You must go to Sri Dhama Mayapur in West Bengal and beseech the mercy of Sri Nityananda Prabhu for you to be clear of this despair. You are in India right? Gaura Purnima is tommorow! Prabhu I don't know what your problems are, and I am no professional, nor am I a devotee of any kind, but you have to believe that problems like girls insulting you and guys making fun of you will pass. I had this problem in the school also. Then in the college I had few friends. These same people bothering you now will soon become old, unable to enjoy, then their life will have no meaning, but they will be too old and decrepid to make any meaning. The love and mercy of Sri Guru sustains me, sustains us all. Please don't do anything brash that would put you again through 84 laks of species.

Prabhu, I think it depends on what the definition of maha mantra is in the context of that quotation. Suddha nama is true initiation. When we start to chant nama aparadha and nama abhasa, this pulls the plug of the proverbial fan that represents your karma wheel spinning in motion. Krsna, the all attractive Lord will pull you closer to this path and suddha nama will eventually be chanted. The main obstacle to this path is aparadha; in many forms; Vaishnava aparadha, as well as philosophical aparadha, that is believing in Vaishnavism, but then accepting an impersonalist path. If aparadha is avoided, you will eventually get this true initiation and suddha nama is chanted. Sometimes devotees "fall down"; they may lose their faith for some time, stop chanting, stop following some rules, but you will see in many cases these same "fallen devotees" picking themselves up after some time. For some reason the pastime of Srila Bilvamangala Thakur is coming to mind. and how can we do diety worship without initiation? If you're without 2nd initiation, you may not be able to offer bhoga in the proper way or dress and bathe the deities. Still, you can engage in bhajans and kirtan in the deities presense. You can offer to acquire things such as flowers for Them. Absense of mantra diksa does not preclude you from interaction with Sri Vigraha.

Prabhu, you have made so many posts and encyclopedias, why are you feeling this way now? Srila Prabhupad had so many problems when coming to America. He got ill on the ship, and in New York, he had to deal with the crazy young people, but eventually he made a worldwide mission. What about the Pandavas losing everything they had? What of the Muslim and the British empires ravaging mother Bharata, and making many offenses to the Holy Dham? Whatever negative impressions are in your life, they will pass. Being a Vaishnava is the most difficult thing in this life, the goal is great, but the road is difficult. Do not give up.

Many variants of your question have been asked already. You'll find the pertinent threads below. http://www.audarya-fellowship.com/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=hinduism&Number=5747&page=&view=&sb=&o=&fpart=1&vc=1 http://www.audarya-fellowship.com/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=hinduism&Number=32682&page=&view=&sb=&o=&fpart=1&vc=1 Pandu's actions ultimately caused him to be cursed by the sage in the form of a dear. The curse lila enabled the Pandavas to become who they were in the Mahabharat. How would the conflicts of Mahabharat arise if Pandu had lived? Your question comes in several expansions. You could ask why Pandu was hunting, why Pandu had 2 wives, why some of the Pandavas had multiple wives, why Draupadi had multiple husbands, why Shiva, the greatest of the Vaisnavas, smoked ganja, why Srila Bhaktivinode Thakur, a nitya siddha, ate meat. These are the pastimes. In several Vaishnava lilas you may find something to question. They are pastimes not meant for imitation. If this really bothers you, consult a very elevated devotee.

Haribol prabhu, I am very happy that you pasted the link to this verse and purport. It gives us a chance to read some very deep purports together and offer our impressions to one another. For those of us who cannot attend classes, we have the next best thing here. Srila Prabhupad gives us the translation which you quoted above, then gives us a series of quotations about the importance of taking initiation and having a bonefide spiritual master. Finally, he uses quotes which stress the importance of simply chanting Hare Krsna maha-mantra. Those who read through it fast may immediately be distracted by a preceived paradox; the importance of solely chanting the holy name, versus the importance of diksa and purascarya process. Diksa-samskara is a very powerful thing. The process of diksa; fire sacrifice, self-preparation for diksa, acceptance by the spiritual master, produce a very powerful samskara. However, Namacharya Srila Haridas Thakur never had a brahminical initiation. But hari nama and mantra diksa is taken by many of us, because the samskaras aid us greatly. When I read Srila Prabhupad's purport, immediately, Sri Guru and His Grace Chapter 9 came to mind. Specifically; -- BEGIN QUOTE -- Mantra: Circle within a Circle Jiva Goswami has written that the name of Krsna is the principle thing in the gayatri mantra. Within the mantra, there are also so many other words, but the name is the most important. If the name of Krsna is taken away, and replaced with some other name, the whole thing will be rotten. This is the decision of Jiva Goswami. The holy name of Krsna is all in all. The holy name of Krsna is there in the gayatri mantra, and so many other words are couched there. But if Krsna's name is taken away and replaced with the name of Siva, then the whole thing will go to Siva. The holy name is the all-important factor. The holy name of Krsna is so important that even the gayatri mantra may not be necessary. It is said na ca sat kriya, na dikse na ca purascarya manadilate mantrayam rasana spri hanato sri krsna namatmaka : "One need not undergo all the purificatory processes, or follow the six ritualistic ceremonies mentioned in the Vedas for pious life; one need not even take initiation into the gayatri mantra. If one simply chants the holy name of Krsna without offense, everything will be successful." The holy name of Krsna is the most important consideration. The gayatri mantra may not even be necessary. We accept the mantra only to help the nama-bhajana, the worship of the holy name. Otherwise, it may not be necessary at all. It has been judged in such a way. The name alone can do everything for a person. lt is full and complete. The mantra helps us to do away with the aparadhas, offenses, and the abhasa, or hazy conceptions in our bhajana. The mantra comes to help us only so far. An example is given of larger and smaller circles. The holy name of Krsna is the larger circle. It extends from the highest to the lowest. The mantra circle is a smaller circle within the larger circle. The mantra cannot reach to the lowest point. The holy name can extend itself down to the lowest position. The mantra gives us entrance into liberation, and then the name carries us further. This is the nature of our connection with the mantra and the name. The name extends to the lowest position, to the candalas and yavanas. Everyone can receive the name. But everyone is not eligible for the gayatri mantra. Only after one has reached a developed stage can the mantra be conferred upon him. And the mantra's jurisdiction will be finished when liberation is attained. In the Caitanya-caritamrta (Adi. 7. 73): krsna-mantra haite habe samsara mocana krsna-nama haite pabe krsnera carana "The Krsna gayatri mantra liberates one from repeated birth and death in this world; the holy name of Krsna gives one shelter at the lotus feet of Krsna." The gayatri mantra helps us achieve liberation, and then the mantra retires. After giving us liberation, the mantra is finished. But the name will continue all along, from the lowest to the highest. In chanting the name, there is no mention of any petition--it is an address only. We should not chant with the mentality that, "I want this." We must simply chant the name spontaneously. That will encourage good will in us. So, because the function of the mantra is limited, but the name is all-important, the nama guru will be honored first, and next, the mantra guru, and then the other Vaisnavas. -- END QUOTE -- Mantra diksa is not required, yet it accelerates us to chanting suddha nama. Likewise, Srila Prabhupad and shastra says that purascarya is not absolutely required, but stresses on its importance for those embarking on their spiritual life. By engaging in these activities, we bring ourselves closer at a faster rate to chant suddha nama. I strongly believe that the verse was referring to Hare Krsna maha mantra -- suddha nama only.

Better than Prahlada are the Pandavas; na tu prahladasya grhe param brahma vasati na ca tad darsanartham munasya tad grhan abhiyanti na ca tasya brahma matuleyadi rupena varttate na ca svayam eva prasannam, ato yuyam eva tato 'pyasmatto 'pi bhuri-bhaga iti bhavah "The Supreme Personality of Godhead did not personally remain in Prahlada's home, although He stayed in the home of the Pandavas. Great sages did not travel to Prahlada's home to see the Supreme Lord, but for this purpose they did visit the home of the Pandavas. The Supreme Lord did not become the intimate relative of Prahlada Maharaja, He was the maternal cousin of the Pandavas. He also did not personally express great pleasure at the daily activities of Prahlada as He did with the Pandavas. For all these reasons, Narada Muni has said that the Pandavas were more fortunate than either himself or Prahlada." (Laghu- Bhagavatamrta, Uttara-khanda 19) The Yadavas are Superior to the Pandavas; sadati san-nikrstatvat mamatadhikyato hareh pandavebhyo'pi yadavah kecit sresthatama matah "Because of their constant intimate association with Lord Krishna and close ties with Him, some members of the Yadu dynasty are more exalted than the Pandavas." (Laghu- Bhagavatamrta, Uttara-khanda 18)

Why were so many godbrothers envious of Srila Prabhupada ?
Dervish replied to krsna's topic in Spiritual Discussions
"In the same order as Kardama Muni, about one hundred years ago, Thakura Bhaktivinoda also wanted to beget a child who could preach the philosophy and teachings of Lord Caitanya to the fullest extent. By his prayers to the Lord he had as his child Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Gosvami Maharaja, who at the present moment is preaching the philosophy of Lord Caitanya throughout the entire world through his bona fide disciples." Srimad-Bhagavatam Canto 3: Chapter Twenty-two, Text 20 "Among Vaisnavas there may be some difference of opinion due to everyone's personal identity, but despite all personal differences, the cult of Krsna consciousness must go on. We can see that under the instructions of Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura, Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Gosvami Maharaja began preaching the Krsna consciousness movement in an organized way within the past hundred years. The disciples of Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Gosvami Maharaja are all Godbrothers, and although there are some differences of opinion, and although we are not acting conjointly, every one of us is spreading this Krsna consciousness movement according to his own capacity and producing many disciples to spread it all over the world." Srimad-Bhagavatam Canto 4: Chapter Twenty-eight, Text 31 "Even amongst our God-brothers we have misunderstanding but none of us is astray from the service of Krishna. My Guru Maharaja ordered us to execute his mission combinedly. Unfortunately we are now separated. But none of us have stopped preaching Krishna Consciousness. Even if there was misunderstanding amongst the God-brothers of my Guru Maharaja none of them deviated from the transcendental loving service of Krishna. The idea is that provocation and misunderstanding may remain between one man and another. But our staunch faith in Krishna Consciousness may not allow any material disruption. Please therefore try to be sympathetic with any person even if they differ. The only qualification we have to scrutinize is if one is acting in Krishna Consciousness as far as one is able to do it. This personal grudge is not inhuman and as I have told many times, that individualism is the cause of personal misunderstanding. When such individualism is employed in the center of Krishna there is no harm even if there is personal misunderstanding. Personal misunderstanding exists even in the higher levels. There is competition of loving Krishna even in the party of Srimati Radharani." Letter to: Brahmananda : 67-11-18 Calcutta "So I am feeling very much obliged to my, this godbrother, that he carried out the wish of my spiritual master and forced me to accept the sannyasa order. This godbrother, H.H. Kesava Maharaja is no more. He has entered Krsna's abode So I wish to pass a resolution of bereavement and send them. And I have composed one verse also in this connection in Sanskrit.....so I did not want to accept this sannyasa order, but this godbrother forced me 'you must.' apayayan mam, he forcefully made me drink this medicine...the Vaisnavas, the spiritual master, they forcefully say 'you drink this medicine.' You see apayayan mam anabhipsu ardham Sri-Kesava-bhakti prajana-nama. So this my Godbrother, his name is Kesava, Bhaktiprajnan Kesava. Krpambudhi. So he did this favour upon me because he was ocean of mercy. So we offer our obeisances to Vaisnava, krpambudhi. Vancha-kalpa-tarubhyas ca krpa-sindhubhya eva ca. The Vaisnavas, the representatives of the Lord, they are so kind. They bring the ocean of mercy for distributing to the suffering humanity. Krpambudhir yas tam aham prapadye. So I am offering my respectful obeisances unto this His Holiness, because he forcefully made me adopt this sannyasa order. So he is no more in this world. He has entered Krsna's abode. So I am offering my respectful obeisances along with my disciples...We are writing like this, "Resolved that we the undersigned members and devotees of International Society for Krishna Consciousness Incorporated, in a condolence meeting under the presidency of His Divine Grace A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami, today the 21st of October, 1968, at our Seattle branch, express our profound bereavement on hearing the passing of His Divine Grace Om Visnupada Sri Srimad Bhaktiprajnan Kesava Gosvami Maharaja, the sannyasa guru, preceptor of our spiritual master, and on October 6th, 1968, at his headquarter residence in Nabadwip, West Bengal. We offer our respectful obeisances unto the lotus feet of Sri Srimad Bhakti Prajnana Kesava Gosvami Maharaja with the following verse composed on this occasion by our spiritual master." This verse I have already explained to you. So I wish that you all sign this and I'll send it tomorrow by air mail." (21st October '68, condolence lecture, Seattle) "So when we came back to Allahabad, so Ganesa Babu, he introduced me, that "Here is a nice devotee." So Prabhupada immediately replied, "Yes, I have marked him. He does not go away, he hears." This (indistinct), "Yes, I will accept him as disciple." Then I was initiated. In this way our relationship with Gaudiya Matha developed, and gradually as it developed, the other side diminished. Then, there are long history, it will take time, but I had the opportunity of associating with His Holiness. For several years I had the opportunity. Krsna and Prabhupada liked it to prepare me. Sridhara Maharaja lived as a... Sridhara Maharaja: (indistinct) Prabhupada: (laughs) ...in my house, some may say, a few years, so naturally we had very intimate talks and he was my good adviser. I took his advice, his instruction very seriously, because from the very beginning I know he's a pure Vaisnava and devotee, and I wanted to associate with him, and try to help him also in so many ways. He also tried to help me, so our relationship is very intimate. After the breakdown of the Gaudiya Matha, I wanted to organize another organization, making Sridhara Maharaja head." (Room Conversation, Mayapur, March 17, 1973) "In keeping with the spirit of the previous acarya's vision of Gaudiya-Madhva sampradaya, to cement relations with all the sister temples of Gaudiya-Madhva sampradaya under one banner, to solidify preaching the message of Caitanya Mahaprabhu, as desired by His Divine Grace Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Prabhupada and Srila Thakura Bhaktivinoda and all the previous acaryas in this line." (Room Conversation, Vrindaban, October 29, 1977, 771029RC.VRN) Bhavananda: With bookstand. Prabhupada has formed a trust, the Bhaktivedanta Swami Charity Trust, and its purpose is to develop Gauda-mandala-bhumi. Prabhupada's one idea is to build this darsana-mandapa at the yoga-pitha. And another is to finish Sridhara Maharaja's darsana-mandapa at his..., like that, to develop the different..., to encourage co-operation between the different Godbrothers in the temples. The members of the trust are myself and Tamala Krsna Maharaja and Giriraja, Svarupa Damodara, myself, Madhava Maharaja and Madhusudana Maharaja. Prabhupada named those members. Prabhupada: How do you think the idea? Jayapataka: All of your ideas, Srila Prabhupada, are perfect. I am not someone to offer opinion. But if you ask, I think that actually, especially the yoga-pitha, natha-mandira, that's a very dynamic idea, and in general it must do good. Prabhupada: We want co-operation. (Room conversation, Vrndavana, 6 November 1977) "These are the secrets of the acaryas. Sometimes they conceal the real purpose of the vedas and explain the Vedas in a different way. Sometimes they enunciate a different theory just to bring the atheists under their control." Madhya-lila 25.42 -
I will give you very easy practical advice: If you get 2nd initiation, pay close attention when guruji gives mantra, this is very important time. Keep your thread clean at all times. Never take it off (unless you are replacing, but there is a specific way to do that). Anytime you are entering an unclean room like a bathroom, keep the thread around your right ear, three times (right ear for smaranam). If you pass any bodily stuff without the thread around your ear, you will have to replace. After you pass, you will need to take a shower before chanting diksa mantras or engaging in archanam. Be sure to have replacement threads. There is a specific way to change threads; I know how of course, but you're better off asking your godbrothers or guru. If you are householder, be sure to ask them about householder related concerns pertaining to brahmin initiation. You have taken brahminical vows at this point. Be serious, but don't panic if you do something wrong. The important thing for you is to learn and keep going. Never give up. Ask your guruji and his representitives which texts they authorize for mantra purports. I like Srila BR Sridhar Maharaj's essay about gayatri mantra. Living Entity is correct, ask your guru maharaj the more complicated deep questions, but I don't see why you shouldn't ask the more mundane, day to day related questions here. Double check any info gotten here with godbrothers. Anymore questions?

Very good article. I can only wonder what the US Government will do a decade or two from now when the Palestinians greatly outnumber the Israelis and the water supply is depleted. US and Israeli arrogance will add gasoline to the upcoming fire. I feel bad for everyone living in that area, Muslim and Jew alike.

This is fascinating, I did not pick up on this influence. I was under the impression that this "hipness" only existed in the 1970's. It seems now the only "Indian spiritual" influences people like are hatha yoga and kama sutra.

Don't want to associate with others anymore
Dervish replied to krsna's topic in Spiritual Discussions
I don't think there is any problem with picking your association carefully, as long as you pay respect to all Vaishnavas you encounter. It may be more lonely that way, but what to do? The material world is quite awful, not for a gentleman as Bhaktisiddhanta says. -
Why were so many godbrothers envious of Srila Prabhupada ?
Dervish replied to krsna's topic in Spiritual Discussions
I don't know ... these letters taken from SP letters archives If this is the case, then how do we know the first letter was written by one of Prabhupada's "godbrothers"? A lot of the petty things that the writer attacked Prabhupad for, like having a cushion while giving class, could just as easily been attacks on Bhaktisiddhanta. I read the letter you posted, and their arrogant tone seems to be more the style of mayavadis than anything. I can't even imagine someone from a sahajiya apasampradaya saying things like this. As for the 2nd letter, it's a second hand account, and if indeed true, should not elicit a blanket generalization on every one of Srila Prabhupad's godbrothers. The misdeeds of one will not damn all of them We don't even know who that quote is attributed to. -

Who wrote those letters? -
Your post is interesting, but it would be better placed in the thread "Passion of the Christ" in the World Review forum.

earlier thread Read that thread. If you want spiritual life, your husband should want it too. Don't let your parents throw some "brahmin" at you just because of their caste and how wealthy they are. Remember Bhagavad Gita and Srimad Bhagvatam, it says your caste is based on how you act, not birth. [moderators note; link shortened to keep page from going off screen]

Very few are truly "serving" maya. Was Kamsa serving Krishna when he gave Krishna pleasure by losing against Him in wrestling? Absolutely not. This was not his intention. His intention was to hurt Krishna. 99.9999999999% of the world is likewise not serving Maya since everybody wants to exploit Maya, not serve her.
