1. Indian Astrology Remedies-Do They Really Work?Pt.P.K.Bhardwaj What Are Vedic Astrology Remedies?Human beings in their life face a lot of pain, misery and troubles, which affect them both emotionally as well as physically. To avoid pain and to seek pleasure has been one of the major objectives of our lives. The other major objective for a select few of us is to know our true self and to know the ultimate reality and be one with it. Whether the objective is material or spiritual, as per one's destiny there could be a lot of hurdles. Vedic (Indian) astrology has not only given us tools to determine what's destiny has in store for us but also ways to avoid the hurdles in achieving our material or spiritual goals. These ways as suggested by the astrological principles are called remedies. All these remedies attempt to correct one of the two situations as depicted in your chart. They are making good planets stronger or making effect of bad planets weaker. Doubts About Vedic Astrology Remedies?A number of people who believe in Indian astrology refuse to believe the efficacy of the remedial measures it offers. Here are some of many questions I have received in the past. "The underlying assumption of astrology being karma theory and planets being just 'soochakas' rather than 'karakas' (signals rather than doers), is there a justification for remedy at all?All of life events are something that I feel are destined. If they are destined and my astrological charts are telling me this, how can I change something written in my chart and hence in my destinyIf my chart is predicting an unfavorable event in my life, and by remedies if I am able to stop that event from happening, wouldn’t that invalidate what’s written in my chart" Why Remedies Do Not WorkAll of the above are excellent questions. But there is valid theory behind the concept of remedies. Just like when a drug company introduces a new drug, it goes through clinical trials for several years before it is released for the consumption of common public, similarly these remedies are tried and tested by years of practice of our ancient seers. However just as a drug is not suitable for everyone and only a very experienced doctor can tell if a drug is right under certain conditions, similarly only a very experienced Indian astrologer can tell the right remedy for the right person valid under certain conditions. Majority of the so-called astrologers do not follow the rules correctly and hence give a bad name to these remedies. What is the Astrological Basis of Remedies?Planets move in the skies in a pre determined way. The permutations and combinations they form are all predetermined and are being governed by natural laws. Reasoning then suggests that the only way destiny can control your next birth based on your karmas is by choosing a time for your birth when the certain planetary combinations suited to give you the results based on your past karmas are present. So destiny does it role by choosing that moment and giving you a life as per the planetary combinations and their natural effects. Now destiny's role is done and planets take over to give you the results based on the combinations present at the time of your birth. But what if the man learns to alter the effects of planets to some extent now.. can he alters his predefined life now.... the answer is obviously.. if we understand how planets effect us to begin with to give the life destiny handed over to us.. we can surely alter those effects to make them work for us. That's what remedies are all about. They are our attempt to alter the natural effects of planets. We do that by experimenting with gems (which use electromagnetic radiations), Mantras. (Which use sound waves) and Yantras (which use geometrical and mathematical shapes). Correct Way Of Determining RemedyA doctor needs to determine your health and other drug history before prescribing a medicine. he does that to make sure that there are no unwanted interactions with other drugs you are taking, your body will be able to take the side effects and the drug will be effective given your age, weight, blood pressure etc. An astrologer pretty much needs to do a similar analysis. e.g. Let's say that a native comes to you with a problem of not able to gain a lot wealth. Now the problem has two parts, he must be able to make a lot of money as well as he must be able to accumulate a lot of wealth by proper savings or investments. What if you suggest a remedy, which will help him, earn a lot of money by making a particular planet stronger? But what if that planet is bad for accumulating wealth? By suggesting that remedy you just made sure that he will earn a lot of money but will not be able to save or invest it properly. That person will obviously come back later on and say that the remedy never worked. The correct way of suggesting the remedy is as follows. First Determine the overall bad and good effects of all planets in the chart.Next determine the strength of all those planets.Next determine what is causing the trouble. A weak but good planet or a strong but malefic planet. If both of the above cases are present then choose the weak but the good planet for remedy. If weak but good panet is picked for remedy, determine if that planet is capable of producing bad effects for any house. Check the strength of that house, if the house is otherwise strong proceed, otherwise also include in your remedy the good planet for that chart to protect that house. If strong but malefic planet is picked up for remedy, determine if that planet (specially the houses on which that planet lords over) is good for any house. Repeat the same check as explained above to make the affected house stronger. Finally check the dasha scheme, check the relationship of the planet with the dasha lord and see if they are compatible. If not compatible then suggest a remedy for the dasha lord instead of the planet in question. As you can see the results will really vary chart to chart. That's why no remedy works the same way for all the poople. Remedies do work, but determine the right remedy takes real skill and years of experience.

8. Dear all , Some rules for judging divisional charts. Regards J.s.sandhu THe book “New Techniques of Prediction” by Shri Sheshadri Iyer. In that book he has proposed some fundamental rules for judging divisional charts. I have not used all these rules and not tested all of them. In fact, I am no expert in using Divisional Charts. I personally prefer mixing Krishnamurthy Paddhati with classical astrology for judgment. Nevertheless, I tried quite a few of them and found to be very useful in predictive astrology. Here are those rules - 1. The most important and necessary condition for a planet to give beneficial effect of the D chart is its relative good position from the lagna of that D-chart irrespective of other factors such as being in inimical or debilitated sign or aspect or conjunction with other planets. Thus under this theory primary factor is its position from D-lagna. If the planet be in places other than 3,6,8, and 12 (Dusthanas) it gives good results, its magnitude depending on other factors. But if they are in Dustnanas they always give bad results whatever their other results be. But there are some exceptions to this: a)Kuja even in 6th in all D charts does good for he aspects lagna from 6th. b)Budha even in 8th in D-4 only gives good. Note the general theory of Budha being in 8 as being exceptionally lucky. It is only here and not in other D charts. c)Shani though in 8 does not kill, is the general say. This holds good only in D-8 chart when Shani is in D-8 lagna and not elsewhere. Thus the above 3 exceptions have to be remembered. 2. Consider both the Rasi chart (D-1) and the divisional chart to weigh an effect. As stated above, position in D chart surpasses that in D-1 chart. Even though a planet is in bad bhava in D-1, he gives good effects of a D chart if he is there in good position from D lagna. Likewise however powerfully and favorably a planet is situated in D-1, if he is in Dustana in the D chart he gives bad effects of that D-chart. 3. Having concluded the good or bad effects as per Rules 1 and 2 above the magnitude of the effect has to be judged from both D-1 and D-charts as follows: a.If the planet has any kind of Shadbalas [Temporal (Kalaja), Motional (chesta), exaltation (uccha), Directional (Digbala), Declinatory (Ayanabala), or positional (Sthanabala)] in D-chart and favourably situated from its Lagna it gives good effects of a higher magnitude, the more the quantum the more the simultaneous varied strengths. If in addition to this the planet is also powerfully situated in D-1 also excellent results of a superior degree happen. b.Even a mere ordinary good position in D-chart coupled with strong position in D-1 (though in Dustana in D-1) gives effects of a higher order. c.But, however strongly and favourably situated in D-1 if the planet be in Dustana in D-chart he does bad to that chart portfolio even if he is exalted or in his own house in that D-chart. All these establish the necessity of a planet being in good positions from the D-lagna to give the good results. 4. A combust or vanquished planet (in planetary fight) in D-1 is of no avail in D chart even if he is well placed and powerfully situated in D- Chart. He will give worst results to that D-effect if he is also badly placed in D-chart. It precisely amounts to dealing with a dead object. 5. If a planet situated favorably in D-chart is debilitated it gives good effect if it attains Neecha Bhanga. 6. Of all the powerful positions the most important are (a) Exaltation (b) Vargottama © Own house (d) Digbala. All these have to be applied to all the D-Charts. In this connection remember that a planet situated in the same sign both in D-1 and any other D-Chart must be construed as being in Vargottama with respect to that D chart and the effects of that D-chart read thereon. Unfortunately this aspect is being judged only by Navamsha position. (D-9) when you apply this theory you get convinced. 7. For reasons stated above exaltations in 3,6,8 or 12 in D-Chart are of no avail. 8. See if any of the general Yogas exist in the D-chart. If so gauge the magnitude by their strengths as stated above. 9. The effects of planets in the D chart get modified by conjunction or aspect of other planets in the D chart. Here only the natural benefics and natural malefics are to be taken and not the functional ones. Among benefics, Guru is the only planet to alleviate evil indicated by a planet in bad position in the D-chart. If that Guru is powerfully situated in that D chart his aspect is certainly of effect, but a debilitated Guru cannot be banked upon. 10. The birth Yogi and Avayogi have to be noted here. If the birth Yogi is in a good place in D-chart, he gives yoga to that effect but in a bad position he is lost. Similarly, birth Avayogi in a favorable position in D-chart will create hindrances, anxieties and trouble. 11. Lordship of Bhavas are to be considered only in D-1 and not in D-charts except lord of D-lagna. 12. A debilitated planet in D-Chart though in good position gives bad, if there be no Neecha Bhanga. 13. D-Lagna becoming Vargottama is itself an indication of the effect of that D-Chart going very high provided its lord is well placed there. If he is in Dusthana in such a D-chart, only dreamy effects are felt by the native. In addition to D-lagna being Vargottama, its lord be also likewise or otherwise powerfully and favourably situated in D-chart, he gives excellent results. 14. 3rd and 8th places are deathlike places. A planet in 8th or 3rd in D-chart causes death to that effect. In D-9 to wife, in D-10 to profession. Death may be construed as also severance. A planet in 3rd in D-10 causes retirement from service. Please note the exception of Shani in 1st house in D-8 and Budha in 8th in D-4. 15. 2nd house is said to be a neutral house. A planet in 2nd house in a D-chart also behaves likewise. 16. A planet in 6th house in D-chart in a powerful rasi gives good first and bad later on. 17. It is said in general astrology that the more the number of planets aspecting Lagna, the more powerful the native becomes. The same theory applies to D-chart also. 18. Benefics on either side of Lagna is said to confer Yoga. True even in the case of D-chart. But in such a situation if any malefic joins the benefic, the Yoga gets marred. Similarly, malefics on either side though spoils first, gets better if any benefics joins them. What is said of Lagna holds good with respect to the 7th house too. Here one thing has to be noted. In the case of malefics if they are Birth Yogi or in their own house in D-chart they give modified good effects. 19. Just as the 2nd and the 12th places from the lagna were dealt in point 18, if planets are placed equidistantly from lagna such as 2-12, 3-11, 4-10, 5-9, 6-8, 1-7 they cause effects as stated above depending on their natural benefic or malefic character. This is a special mention of Jaimini known as Sankhya Yoga. 19. In D-12 if moon is with Kethu invariably the native's mother becomes a widow. 20. Planets or bhavas hemmed in between malefics goes bad. Similarly a planet in a D-chart or a D-chart lagna hemmed in between malefics becomes bad. 21.Malefics in 12th, 1st and 2nd houses in a D-chart is not good. Benefics in 12th, 1st and 2nd houses in a D-chart is good. 22. An incident such as marriage day, commencement of profession or fresh undertaking, birth of an issue, etc happening during the period of a planet situated badly in the respective D-chart may not end happily. 23. Accession, election and other positions of conferrable nature are to be read from D-11. [D11 is Labhamsa (profit & loss) (2 degrees, 8 mins and 11 secs) He gave this quite a lot of importance. For even if one's status is not good a happily situated D11 chart will confer on the native financial felicity tending his balance sheet towards profit side even without the least exertion for the same due to his past good karma. D10 represents earned income, while D11 represents unearned income as patrimony, easy income, side income, lottery, gambling etc. The formation of this chart is peculiar. In all rashis start from Mesha only and go in reverse order. Thus you see that the sign Vrishabha goes without any Amsha as the last eleventh Amsha closes with Mithuna.] 24. Uccha with Neecha or one with his enemy – Not good. 25. Of the 2 planets on either side of lagna or equidistant from D-lagna if one is benefic and the other malefic, then bad results are felt only during the malefic period. 26. A planet, though in the 8th house in D-chart, does not harm if aspected by a powerful Guru. 27. Female horoscope is specially treated by classics confining at least to our Indian womanhood. As marriage and married life is held sacred in India D-9 is held very important for females. If this Navamsha chart is good, all the rest are good. 28. A karaka in bad position in D-8 kills the relative connoted by the karaka. Sun in 8th house in D-8 kills father, Moon - Mother, Shukra -Wife and so on. 29. Any yoga in a D-chart is no doubt operative through out life but is particularly felt during their periods. 30. Even a debilitated planet in good position in a D-chart does good if he is a Yoga Planet. 31. In D-11 the effect of the Bhava occupied by the planet counted from D-lagna happens, one in 7th house causes marriage, in 4th property etc. 32. Parivartana Yoga (mutual exchange of grahas) existing in D-chart has its due effect. 33. What are all said of the planets in D-charts will be felt during their periods. 34. If the lord of the D-lagna is Birth Yogi or Duplicate Yogi he gives Yoga effects even in ordinary position. 35. If the lord of the D-lagna is in Dusthana the result will be bad on or after its Dasha. 36. Karaka in Bhava is bad as per general astrology. How to apply it to D-charts? Karaka in the corresponding D-lagna is bad. Example: If Budha is in lagna in D-24 education gets spoiled. Shukra in D-9 lagna affects the wife. Sun and moon in D-12 lagna affects father and mother respectively. Kuja in D-3 lagna affects the younger co-born and so on.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:" />

10. Cancer Ascendant v Gajakeshari (Jup quadrant with Moon) yoga (combination) is always beneficial but Moon should be ahead of Jupiter in the 4th from Guru, 2nd priority Jup Moon together, 3rd priority Jupiter is in 4th from Moon & 4th priority Jup Moon opposition. In trikona Mars Rahu together or Guru Rahu together in Kendra then it is a great success and fame giving combination. v Sun in this Cancer Ascendant gives result of house where he sits and not based on his lordship. If he is with some planet then based on that planet he will give results. Basically Sun here does not give results based on his lordship v Native will be a workaholic and will not care about his personal happiness. v His wife will get along well with his mother in law. v In 5H or 9H if there is Moon with Rahu then it gives good results, rahus dasa will be best and even rahu antardasas in mahadasas of other planets will be good if other factors don't oppose. v If Mars Rahu in Kendra or trikona it will give excellent results in rahus dasa v If Moon Saturn in trikona (5, 9 only) will give good results but the intensity will be less in dasas antardasas. v Moon Mars in Kendra or trikona makes the dasas of moon and mars good. This is the specialty of Cancer Ascendant that Moon even with a papa graha gives good results in the dasas but the intensity of success will not be that great.
11. Gemini Ascendant v Any type of relationship of Saturn (bhagyesh) and Guru (karmesh) the native can be a failure in life as compared to his original potential. v Native's wife takes lot of care of Mother in law but her mother in law will not respect his wife. v Relationship with father in law will be cordial and caring. v If Jup in 2H then it gives unpredictable results, 80 % negative results but astrologer should be extra cautious while predicting about 2H matters and even houses that Jupiter Lords. This Jupiter will behave abnormally. It has been seen at times that this Jupiter gives extreme problems of the 2H matters. v If Jupiter is deposited in 5H then it is more powerful than Jupiter exalted in Cancer. v Native should always give respect to people who are elderly to him and to people who have knowledge otherwise he would get destroyed. v If a Gemini native ascendant is facing troubles in life then he should go and help elderly or learned people and in 10 days he would get........>.........> relief. v Native should never sexually exploit women who are younger to him; this becomes the reason for his downfall.
12. Secrets of Ascendants By <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Ashok Upadhaya, India. I n this write up small keys to each Ascendant are presented with basic principles of astrology which all the readers of Saptarishis Astrology are aware of, hence no explanation nor any logic is presented to each verse as it would only eat up space. We request you to memorize & test these verses although it has been tested for a long time by this scribe. Additionally, whatever is written below will be applicable in the 9th Harmonic (Navamsa) too, e.g. if Jupiter Saturn are together in D9 (9th Harmonic) for an Aries Asc and Jupiter Saturn do not form relationship in D1 (1st divisional) but form relationship in D9 then also the rules will be applicable and sometimes the results will be more intense. Aries Ascendant v When Jupiter Saturn has a relationship of any kind the person becomes a failure, minimum 50 % of the horoscopes power is reduced. Ref Laghu Parasari Shloka No 22 yogaadhyaya. Saturn is 10L (karmesh) and Jupiter is 9L (Bhagyesh). v Sun or Mars has any relation with Venus, even in signs of Venus – their energies will not be focus oriented. v Any relation of Ven with Jupiter does not give good results. E.g. Ven in Pisces can give good materialistic success & beautiful wife but quality of marriage life is so-so and not so great. v If Moon is with paap graha it gives good results. v Moon Rahu together in Trines (5,9 only) gives good results v Moon Mars in Trines (5,9 only) gives good results v Moon Saturn in Trines (5,9 only) at times gives good results but they should have no relationship with Jupiter. v Gajakeshari Yoga (jup moon in quadrant) if it has any relationship with Saturn then it does not give results at all of the Gajakeshari yoga. v Guru Venus yoga in those areas of life which have no dignity or depth in it, this yoga will give glamour but at the same time gives bad name (negative publicity). v Guru Venus together in any house brings hani in bhagya i.e. spoils destiny. v Ven Neptune together degreecal or even 2-3 deg aspect, native would have problems of asthma, breathing problem, suffocation, circulation problems in body, sometimes they pass through epilepsy or at times giddiness– this is applicable to all Ascendants. If Ven is 2 deg less than Neptune then the above symptoms will be more visible. v Uranus & Ven being degreecal in Kendra to each other, then sex scandal or gives bad name sometimes, but the result is extreme. Neptune Ven or Uranus Venus relationship one would often find in charts of film stars. v Uranus and Ven in Kendra (quadrant) to each other gives abnormal sexual life for all Ascendants but affect more in Aries Ascendant. v Neptune Venus relationship sometimes gives death in water or fire which means due to non availability of air, basically gives different kind of death at times.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:" /> Taurus Ascendant v Saturn is the major planet in this horoscope, Saturn Mer or Saturn Ven having any type of relationship then the native becomes a great success. v Any relation of Jupiter with Venus or Jupiter with Saturn or Jupiter with Mer, gives short time name fame (success) but they do not get permanent fame (success). The negative results will be seen in Jupiter's antardasa. v Native should never cheat his siblings (co-borns), or even blood relatives, if he cheats he will get destroyed in life and the result of this Sin (papa) will be experienced in the 2nd generation. v He should manage extreme distance from his wife's sister and from widows, if not then full generation will get destroyed.

I also thank PVR Narasimha Raoji of Jagannatha Hora fame - which is the most magnificent astrology software in the world for calculations This is version 0.1 of the attempts and I will soon be adding more versions with examples and modified rules CHAPTER 1: First decide, what you want to look at: First see the query - which aspect of life does it tackle - • For physical body/appearance see lagna and sun • for earned wealth see 2nd house and jupiter (also see 3rd because it is 2nd from 2nd) • for younger siblings and courage see the 3rd house and mars. also see 5th house (3rd from 3rd) • for mother and wealth through real estate see 4th house (also see 7th house, it is 4th from 4th) • for children and intelligence see 5th house and 9th house (5th from 5th - relation with children) • for enemies/diseases see 6th house and mars (also see 11th house - 6th from 6th) • for spouse/partner/travel see 7th house and 1st house (7th from 7th). also see venus • for longevity/mangalya see 8th house, also see 3rd house (8th from 8th) and 7th house (house of death - 12th from 8th). also see saturn • for teacher, good luck, bhagya see 9th house and 5th house (9th from 9th). also see jupiter - 2 - Prediction Rules in Astrology Kiran Rama (kiran.rama@.co.in) • for job/professional achievements see the 10th house and mercury and also see 7th house (10th from 10th) • for gains, elder siblings see 11th house and jupiter and also see 9th house (11th from 11th) • for losses see 12th house and also see 11th house (12th from 12th) and see Saturn CHAPTER 2: APPLY THE DIFFERENT RULES BELOW – PREDICT FULLY GOOD/BAD ONLY IF TWO OR MORE CONSIDERATIONS IN SAME DIRECTION Rule 1: For each house, things signified by the house will take the "good for native/will be enjoyed by native" colour if the house lord is in sustana. Reverse will happen if house lord is in dustana Rule 2: For each house, things signified by the house will take the "good for native/will be enjoyed by native" colour if natural benefics are in the house/aspecting the house Reverse will happen if natural malefics are in the house/aspecting the house This is an addition to rule 1. If both rule 1 and rule 2 are positive, then very good for native, if one is good and one is bad, mixed results, if both bad, bad results Rule 3: For each house if it is good/bad also confirm by looking at primary significator and the other house. E.g: for Spouse look at 7th house. But also look at Venus and 2nd house (7th from 7th) Rule 4: Remember for rule 1 and 2: there is a modifier: No house lord will give bad results when he is exalted or his own house. House lord will give bad results when he is debilitated remember exaltation is more powerful than own house Rule 5: No house lord will harm his friend's house if he is posited in the house E.g: Natural Malefic in his friend's house x will not harm x because it is his friend's house reverse occurs for enemy house Rule 6: - 3 - Prediction Rules in Astrology Kiran Rama (kiran.rama@.co.in) Malefic going to/aspecting a house destroys the things signified by the house. So malefic in sustana is very bad because all good things are destroyed. But a catch here: If malefic and house signify same thing it will be amplified Sun is a sattva planet in the house of dharma - e.g: Sun is a sattwik planet and him in the 9th house is good and can make native religious minded and spiritual So in above case, sun in 9th house though a natural malefic is a good placement So malefics in dustana houses are good as they destroy the things signified by dustana houses and all of that is bad - but they add their own colour to these houses and so being malefics, still not much good is done but certainly some reduction of harm - unless the house and the planet signified the same harm Rule 7: All planets/house lord significance are amplified in the 11th house irrespective of whether they are debilitated or enemy house or exaltation or own house Reason is that 11th house is special of upachaya houses and increases significance of anything that is placed there Rule 8: Sustana house lord in any house is good for that house. E.g: Lagna Lord is the most auspicious and his presence in any house is good for that house After lagna lord, 10th lord is next most auspiscious. Other auspiscious house lords are the lords of the 4th, 9th and 11th Rule 9: Modifier for rule 2: Natural Malefic will cease to be malefic for a natal chart if he is: a) yogakaraka b) exalted c) own house d) vargottama (same sign in natal chart and navamsa) obviously debilitation will worsen its effects e) he is a functional benefic lord of lagna, 10th, 4th, 9th or 11th In case where natural malefic is lord of a sustana house or 2 sustana houses, his malefic tone is reduced. Opposite happens for benefic houses Rule 10: take nature of planet into account when you make predictions for planet house. Say Sun is in the 7th house. 7th house is marriage/spouse adn Sun is a planet who is hot and signifies vitality, virility. so sun in 7th house (passion) can make person extremely passionate and run after women and immorality

15. Kalapurusha and Human Karma by Rohiniranjan One of the first things jyotishis learn in astrology is the kalapurusha kundali which has mesha rising in the lagna and the rest of the signs arranged in the remaining houses. Kalapurusha is Time-personified, TIME itself viewed as a human being. I have always taken it to represent the horoscope of all human beings, in other words a generic horoscope of the human race! As far as I know, only human beings are concerned about or interested in astrology, hence in the rest of the article I would avoid the oxymoronic term: Human Karma, and simply call it Karma! The remaining fauna and flora are perhaps entirely devoid of karma because their fate is the responsibility of The Creator and those built in the image of the CREATOR! I invite you to take this mental journey with me. Let us try and match attributes of the planetary rulers and the houses in this Aries-oriented kalapurusha kundali and who knows, some interesting concordances might emerge. Almost sans exceptions for most of earth-dwellers, to achieve success in material spheres be it money or fame or in spiritual spheres too, hard work and persistence and focused application of oneself is an absolute requirement. Initiative is certainly important as also is the willingness to assume responsibilities and taking risks. Physical and mental endurance are essential attributes. Remaining blasé and waiting for blessings to drop in ones lap is generally not a good strategy, or sometimes is not even an option. Little wonder that energetic mars rules the FIRST house in the kalapurusha=s horoscope (KPH hereafter) through its fiery, action-oriented sign, Aries. Venus represents LOVE in its many shades including true love, unconditional love, selfish love, all kinds of love. Some of us love our families, our acquisitions, our knowledge, even ourselves. Our personal possessions that we want to last forever and grow are ruled in the KPH by the fixed, earthy sign of Venus B vrishabha, in the SECOND house of the KPH. Communication and logic as well as efforts are the attributes of the third house. Through its airy sign mithuna, budha or mercury gets the portfolio of the THIRD house in KPH. Unlike the emergency-type response that mars is proficient at, mercury is fast at thinking on its feet. The mental agility is never unidirectional and involves strategy: knowing when to push forward, when to stay put and when to step back! Mercury is good at that, being the planet that is probably literally more often moving forward and retrogressing even in its astronomical journey up in the visible sky from our geocentric perspective. The first house deals more with physical efforts, endurance, qualities that are possessed best by mars, but the third house indicates efforts that are of a mental nature. Initiative, careful planning and strategy basically are more the forte of mercury who gets to be the ambassador of the third house. Some astrologers look at the 3rd for communication, travels, restlessness, all of which are mercury=s portfolio. The glove fits! From inner peace comes our sense of integrity and strength of character and this we learn from our first home and the second home in this lifetime. Our first home is inside our mother=s womb. Our second home is the home where our first few years were spent, usually the home of our parents. Our nurturing, the sense of belonging, of being cared and our true sense of self-confidence comes from this house. Little wonder that we find that the FOURTH house in KPH is ruled by moon, the matrukaraka. In most cases, though fathers may give us a lot of brain food, much of our cultural, instinctive and emotional formation can be attributed to our mother, regardless of our gender, or culture and location! The primary domain of the FIFTH house deals with children and creativity. Having the natural karaka for father, sun, rule over the fifth house in the KPH does make one halt and take notice. In fact if the fifth and ninth could be switched around so that sun became the ruler of the 9th and Jupiter the ruler of the 5th their respective karakattwas would fit the bill perfectly! However, that is not the case in the Kalapurusha kundali. Creative energy comes from an energy Source that is higher than us, and self-sustaining. The Sun represents that with its karakattwa being associated with the SOUL. While hard effort is required, creativity of the highest order, as seen in Beethovan or Mozart requires Heavenly blessings. Mercury comes back again for a second term when we arrive at the SIXTH house. This house has three attributes associated with it clearly and almost unequivocally: service, sickness and maternal uncle. I find it very interesting that mercury which is undeniably an intellectual and information-type planet (Hermes the messenger bringing and taking back information being the patron saint of communication, including the modern information technology) is also associated with effort, service and work, in the third house of purushartha and now again in the sixth. It is also an important upachaya bhava and again the growth aspect of service and sickness as the human population ages (and so does Kalapurusha!) makes sense. Most of the serving, and service these days is really about information management, no matter which vocation, or profession one is in. Truly mercury has its fingers and both thumbs in all pies, metaphorically speaking and our reliance on its child, Internet, in all walks of life is not a random happenstance. It is true that there are a few services that correspond more to Saturn still, but even those are managed by mercury in many ways. Our relationships, at work, at home may have a strong component of communication and mercury which rules the 9th and 12th houses from the seventh house may have an interesting role to play in keeping the 7th house happy and friendly! But seriously, these relationships are based and derive strength from emotions and feelings! The superficial envelop in a business relationship may be about logic, gains and tangible material goals, but players and consultants tell us that in many cases it is often about emotional connectivity. The first impressions! We now hear of terms like, Emotional Intelligence and organization and beautification and streamlining. All of these terms and labels go with Venus that believes in rounding off any jagged edges, and though earlier depicted as the glue that bonds souls is probably more the lubricant that allows souls to coexist B in personal lives, in business, in ... pretty much everywhere! Venus gets the SEVENTH house. I need not go into the obvious links between LOVE, Venus, seventh and 2nd house, I am sure! Leaving the moon aside for a second given its special status vis-à-vis the earth, our home planet is flanked by mars and Venus. This of course is obvious and depicted in the assignment of rulership which is based on the orbital placements in the solar system.

<TD style="BORDER-RIGHT: black 1pt solid; Why is the moon placed next to sun in this scheme? Because if you think about it, what we call as the astrological sun is really a projection of the EARTH. Sun is not going through the 12 signs each year, it is the earth that moves and creates the illusion of the sun moving through the signs! And the moon is the nearest significant real estate next to the earth! With the EIGHTH house, mars again comes to the helm in the KPH. The 8th is the hidden house, the house of research, and the house of litigation. Scorpio has all of these attributes and its persona spans from skepticism all the way to extreme paranoia. The negative manifestation of mistrust lands us into courts, to fight for what we believe is our due and the positive manifestation leads to tirelessly searching, exploring and researching. All of these require the energy of mars. Whereas the fiery mobility of mars gets expressed in the fiery, movable aries, vrischika being a fixed and watery sign deals more with the mental and fluid energy of mars and also persistence. In some ways it has some qualities of Saturn, which is one of the karakas of this house. Saturn is named the ayushkarka or executor of longevity. However, it rules over death and not life. The 8th house indicates vitality or life energy which will relate more naturally to mars. The 8th also represents the home of the enormous quantum of energy, the kundalini, the explosive steam that ties in well with the fixed, water of martian Scorpio: Kundalini at rest but ready to pounce forth and upwards like a volcano that has come alive. Sun has also been associated with physical vitality and it rules the 10th from the 8th in the KPH. This is not random or inconsequential, in my thinking. The tenth house represents the highest expression for any house, the maxima and having the inherent source of vitality, sun ruling the 10th from 8th is an ideal support for longevity B the portfolio of the 8th. Jupiter is known to represent the highest form of knowledge, as well as of dharma, morals and is a teacher par none. The dwiswabhav, fire of dhanu or Sagittarius in the NINTH house of KPH does not require a lot of explanations to see the appropriate place of the 9th rashi in the realm of human experience, the earthly tour for which jyotish has been serving as the tour book for eons. The 9th rules over the teacher, dharma, morals, higher education and one=s father. Interestingly, Parashara has also referred to the 9th and 10th houses in a horoscope as indicative of one=s father. In the absence of detailed explanations which most jyotish classics tend to shy away from B one would have to try and connect the dots by themselves. Saturn rules over the TENTH and ELEVENTH houses in the KPH. Saturn is known as a taskmaster, one who disciplines and introduces us to humility and limitations, and through those gives the human soul opportunities to make itself known better to the self that is living through the life plan, in other words, us! While some individuals may be so lucky as to live charmed lives with a silver or golden spoon in their mouths all through their lives, most others generally have to work fairly hard to make a living and have to experience hardships, self-sacrifice and pain and difficulties in many ways. Short-cuts and possessive greed often lead to punishment while on the other hand sharing and service to others elevates us. All very saturnine. Without Saturn, life would be very enjoyable but completely devoid of meaning and not memorable. It would be a lifetime wasted, if we think about it. Tripods or trines impart stability to a structure. The trines in a horoscope, are the 1st, 5th and 9th houses. These have been interpreted in different ways: body-mind-soul, today-tomorrow-yesterday, self-son-father. Mars, sun and Jupiter are chosen by Kalpurusha as the officers for these three areas, the structure is formed by mars (lagna), the vitality is provided by sun (pancham) and the true knowledge or TRUTH itself by Jupiter (navam). If one of the three legs is shaky or underperforming, a significant degree of joy and fulfillment remains absent from one=s life. Jupiter walks into the limelight again with the mystical TWELFTH house where the rashi of Pisces reigns with its mystical, profound, dwiswabhava and watery nature. In a worldly sense it is the house of expenditure and losses but it also is the house of salvation and thus an important karmic house. Just as the house of longevity (8th) requires a strong fifth house for its maximal expression and the fuel it needs to run an individual=s life, the 10th from 12th, the ninth house imparts meaningfulness to the 12th. Only through understanding the noble essence of Jupiter and the ninth house can losses and expenditures of many types be reconciled and paradoxically gained from ultimately! The shayan sukha attribute of the 12th house has been imaginatively considered by jyotishis, including sexualization of the 12th house, which may be not be the proper interpretation. However, if taken simply and directly as the house that describes the quality of sleep B one who is morally and philosophically superior sleeps peacefully! Again, I would like to emphasize the importance of the tenth house from the 12th in rendering this otherwise negative house into a constructive one that may contribute towards one=s essential and spiritual being and experience. While many jyotishis take great pride in being superior predictors and take the rather black and white view that predicting events is the sole purpose of astrology, they are turning away from something important and factual. Very few individuals are able to predict to a high enough degree of success, or specifically in all or nearly all the charts they predict for! This does not make their contribution any less important, but it does strip astrology of another of its inherent powerful messages. We can wrestle with the philosophical and difficult to prove theorem of what really reigns supreme: Fate or free-will and if all events are even fully predictable? Perhaps my early exposure to the Astrological Magazine and the sense of Astrology being a discipline of probabilities and tendencies has conditioned me to be comfortable with that line of thinking. Again, simply stated, if destiny were cast in concrete, what would be the useful purpose of knowing the good and bad beforehand if these were unmodifiable and what would be the purpose of using remedial measures if the karmic >sentence= has been already pronounced at our birth and written in the legible map know as our horoscope, with no hope of redemption in sight? On the other hand, obviously, the body of jyotish is telling us that as long as the breath flows there will always be room for personal improvement, that the Jury has not given its full report and the Judge surely has not meted out the final sentence. We might be allowed to appear in this earth-bound court, again, perhaps many times, over many lifetimes until we get our act together! How can we improve ourselves if we do not understand ourselves, our drives and difficulties, our motivations and desires, our deficiencies and impediments? In focusing only on predictions, events and dates and often not doing too well on that count, across the board, we are missing out on the other important focus and powerful abilities of jyotish. Firstly, it is a tool for self-knowledge. It will not take us to the ultimate point but let us think of it as the train that takes us to the shore where the ferry awaits that shall take us to our next destination, to another land. Without the train, we shall not reach the port, because the ferry of spiritual enlightenment is not going to come to our house and we cannot reach it without the train (and training!) that the curriculum encapsulated in our horoscope outlines, but we have got to study it. Just as modern doctors do not have a lot of time to spend per patient, most professional astrologers probably are in the same boat with their many clients. Predictive work can be faster but less effective as a complete and long-lasting cure. The well-predicted client will be dazzled and will perhaps come back with more offerings, but the status of astrology as a mysterious and mystical discipline would remain unabated. On the other hand, if more people took up learning jyotish, they would through the study of their charts gain a better understanding of themselves over a period of years. They would do so because they have a vested interest in themselves. They should! The best remedial, one might say, is in learning how to read the charts through learning astrology. As the wise Chinese said: Fish for a person, you feed him a meal, teach him how to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime! December 27, 2008
16. Gulika Dr. Suresh Chandra Mishra Gulika holds a position of prime importance in the evaluation of a natal chart. Also called as Maandi, it, like Rahu and Ketu, has no physical existence. But it always makes a difference in the natal chart output. Gulika is generally considered the most malefic entity in a chart. According to the set standards of assessment of maleficence, it surpasses all natural malefics. Gulika enjoys a special status almost like an independent planet, and in astrological classics it is considered as a minor planet or subplanet. In the traditional astrological practice, the Gulika-Kundali (a horoscopic chart, with houses reckoned from the position of Gulika) used to be an essential component of the Janma-patri (the scroll carrying the horoscopic details of a native, according to the traditional system of making horoscopes in <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />India). Gulika and Maandi In Vedic astrology, Gulika and Maandi are considered synonymous although some people try to differentiate between them. Gulika denotes a certain segment of time controlled by Saturn. The word ‘Maandi’ is derived from Manda or sluggish, another name of Saturn. According to the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra : ukekUrja rq rL;So ekfUnfjR;fHk/kh;rsAA That is: Of the same (i.e., Gulika), another name is Maandi. Fixing the Gulika The position of Gulika is different for daytime (from sunrise to sunset) and night time (from sunset to sunrise). The duration of the day or of the night (as the case may be) is divided into eight parts. The segment belonging to Saturn is known as Gulika. For daytime, the first segment (the first one-eighth of the night) belongs to the planetary lord of the weekday that falls fifth from the weekday under consideration. The subsequent segments belong similarly to other planets that rule the weekdays in natural order. The eighth part here too is without a lord. In each case the part belonging to Saturn is called as Gulika. The Controversy The segment of Saturn during the day or during the night would have some duration. Some people think that the ending moment of Saturn’s segment is the time to calculate the position of Gulika. They determine the ascendant for the ending moment of Saturn’s part; the cusp thus obtained is considered the ‘longitude’ of Gulika. However, the above-mentioned concept results from an erroneous nderstanding of the shloka from the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, which is as follows : xqfydkjEHkdkys ;r~ LQqVa ;TtUedkfyde~A xqfyda çksP;rs rLekr~ tkrdL; Qya onsr~AA That is: The cusp of the sign rising at the beginning of the Gulika segment is considered as Gulika-from this the chart must be analysed. There is a popular, but vague, method of finding out the Gulika. According to this, for a day of 30 Ghatis, the rising time for Gulika during the day, for the seven days from Sunday to Saturday, is at 26, 22, 18, 14, 10, 6 and 2 Ghatis from the time of sunrise. For night time, the order from Sunday onwards is 10, 6, 2, 22, 18 and 14 ghatis from sunset. This method is not accurate. The Prashna Marga, a south India treatise, also refers to the Gulika and Maandi being the same. Results of Gulika • Gulika in the first house most certainly reduces the good results of the chart. The impact is maximum in malevolence when the cusp of the lagna and the Gulika are close in degrees. This means that birth taking place at the commencement of the Gulika-kaala suffers the maximum affliction. In such a situation, the Raja-yogas or other benefic yogas lose their potence. The Phala-deepika states: xqfydL; rq la;ksxks nks"kkUloZ=k fufnZ'ksr~A That is: Determine all adverse results from Gulika’s association. • When the nakshatra of the lagna and Gulika are mutually trinal, the basic benevolence of the lagna nakshatra lord (LNL) is lost. Nakshatras 1, 10 and 19 are mutually trinal. • Gulika spoils the benefic significations of most of the houses by occupying them. Thus, all troubles ensue when Gulika occupies the lagna. In the second house, it curtails family comforts and financial savings. Poor social status results when Gulika occupies the fourth house. In the fifth, it leads to troubles from progeny. And so on. • Of all the sub-planets, Gulika and Yamakantaka (the subplanet represented by Jupiter’s segment) surpass all others in maleficence and beneficance respectively. • Only in houses 3, 6, 10 and 11 does Gulika generate benefical results. In the tenth house, however, it indicates delay in getting established in a career. • The good results of Gulika (from its placement in the above houses) are lost when the rashi and navamsha lords of Gulika are neecha (debilitated) or combust. Gulika with Natural Karakas The association of Gulika with a natural Karaka (significator) always destroys the good effects of that Karaka. Classics hold the opinion that Gulika conjunct with the Sun creates lack of comforts for father, with the Moon it is bad for mother, and with Mars it is adverse for brother. When Gulika joins Mercury, the native becomes mentally disturbed. With Jupiter, the native becomes a hypocrite. Gulika with Venus brings troubles from women and ruins marital life. Association with Saturn leads to disease and skin disorder, with Rahu it leads to proneness to infection, and with Ketu fear from fire. Gulika can alter the results of other planetary yogas in the chart. All good yogas are lost when the birth time and the Gulika-Kaala coincide together with another inauspicious factor like Mahapaata, Gandanta, Visha-Ghati, etc. (refer to our article: ‘Pitfalls in Astrology’, vide the Vedic Astrology Vol. 5, No. 3, May-June 2001 issue). In Chart 1 (born on May 6, 1982; at 11:30 hours; in Nepal), the lagna is Karka (Cancer), at 23º06'. Gulika lagna is 2S11º54', associated with Rahu. The native is mentally retarded. A Mahapaata birth is also confirmed here. A Special Rule A point 180º from Gulika is also considered as acutely malefic in the natal chart. This point must be taken into consideration when the lethal potential of a planet is to be determined. This is better known as the Pramaana Gulika in Vedic astrology. The dispositor of Gulika or Pramaana Gulika may prove fatal during its dasha, etc., displacing the other maraka or killer planets. Dashas and Transits • The dasha periods of the dispositor of Gulika or its navamsha lord may prove hazardous. Chart 2 (born on October 17, 1955; at 17:30 hours; at Pune) belongs to an erstwhile famous ?? actress, Smita Patil. Her lagna is Meena (Pisces) while Gulika occupies Makara (Capricorn) in the eleventh house. She died of meningitis in the Saturn-Mars period. Saturn is the rashi lord of Gulika while Mars is its navamsha lord. • Gulika in houses 1, 5 or 9 authorises the lagna lord to disburse the maraka effect during its dasha. • Trouble results during the dasha of a planet that happens to be an associate of Gulika in the rashi chart. • Severe troubles are also likely during the dasha of any planet associating with Gulika in the navamsha or the dwadashamsha charts. • Specially adverse results ensue during the dasha period, of Jupiter or Saturn when they associate with Gulika in the navamsha, or the dasha of the Sun when it associates with Gulika in the dwadashamsha, or that of the Moon associating with Gulika in the Trimamsha chart. • The Pramaana Gulika deserves the same treatment as Gulika (vide supra). • The transit of Saturn and Jupiter over the navamsha sign lord of Gulika, that of the Sun over the Dwadashamsha sign lord of Gulika, and that of the Moon over the Trimshamsha sign lord of Gulika, put the native in trouble. This is according to the Prashna Marga, which states: eUnkseq"; uoka'kikfJrx`gs e`R;qçnk;h xq#& HkkZuq}kZn'kHkkxikfJrx`gs f=a'kka'ki{ksZ 'k'khA • All trikona (1, 5, 9) rashis should be considered in application of transits. Gulika and Accidents • Gulika is extremely important as an active killer in Vedic astrology. It is used in the judgement of longevity, along with dasha and transit. • The lagna, the Moon and Gulika falling in Dwiswabha (dual) or Sthira (fixed) signs prompt multiple ailments and fatality. In Chara (movable) signs, it leads to good health and long life. • The lagna, the Moon and Gulika falling in mutual trikonas in the navamsha chart, particularly in rashis 4, 8 and 12 are fatal. Such a native is disease prone and accident prone. This is according to the following dictum of the Prashna Marga: sphnt vU;ksU;a ;fn rs f=dks.kHkxrk Hkkxk egkjksxnkA n`"Vk eksgdjk ;qrk ej.knk% dfdZf=dks.ks n`<+e~AA Gulika and Longevity For the calculation of longevity, the lagna, the Moon the Sun and Gulika are all important. A special rule for assessment of longevity involves using the cusp of the lagna and the longitudes of the Sun, the Moon and Gulika. This is as follows: Lagna ´ 5 + Gulika = Prana Sphnt Moon ´ 8 + Gulika = Deha Sphnt Gulika ´ 7 + Sun = Mrityu Sphnt When the sum of Prana and Deha is more then the Mrityu, the native is likely to live long. However, if Mirtyu is bigger than the Sun of Prana and Deha, a rudder end of life is indicated. Chart 3 (born on November 19, 1917; at 23:11 hours IST; at Allahabad) belongs to the Late Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Here, the lagna is 3S27º22', the Sun is 7S04º7', the Moon 9S05º35' and Gulika 1S29º23'. The sum of Prana and Deha is 1S2º16' while Mrityu is 2S15º04'. The native met a tragic end. • Although Gulika is favoured in the third house, it turns death-inflicting when joined by or aspected by Saturn. • Gulika in the third with the Moon or receiving the full aspect of the Moon causes tuberculosis or other internal fatal disease. Daily Results of Gulika • Add the cusp of the lagna to the ‘longitude’ of Gulika. The month when the Sun transits the resultant sign leads to troubles and miseries. • The most hazardous day is when the Moon transits the sign obtained from adding the longitude of the Moon to that of Gulika. • Add the lagna, the Moon and Gulika. The resultant ‘rashi’ is to be considered fatal. The month, the day and the lagna indicated by the sum obtained above must be avoided in all major ventures. In the example (chart 3) given above, Gulika is at 1S29º23'. This indicates Kanya (Virgo) navamsha, Mesha (Aries) Dwadashamsha and Vrishchika (Scorpio) Trimshamsha for Gulika. The native was shot dead on October 31, 1984 at around 10:00 hours IST, at Delhi (Chart 4). The ascendant is Vrishchika, with Saturn in Tula along with the Sun, Jupiter and Gulika are in Dhanu (Sagittarius). The Moon is in Makara (Capricorn) while the navamsha lagna is Meena (Pisces). Adding the Moon and Gulika of the native of chart 3, we get Meena (Pisces). This is in time with the rising lagna of chart 4 as well as with its navamsha lagna. The natal Gulika was in Mesha (Aries) Dwadashamsha (Chart 3). At the time of the fatal mishap, Jupiter and Gulika were in times of Mesha (see chart 4). Gulika and Progeny • Gulika in the fifth house, particularly in rashis 3, 6, 10 and 11, leads to lack of children. In such a situation, the native is likely to have some defect in his generative organs. • Gulika may ensure successful conception when: (i) Gulika and the Moon are in the same sign; (ii) Gulika is with the fifth lord; (iii) Gulika is aspected by the fifth lord; (iv) Gulika in the other sign of the fifth lord; (v) Navamsha lords of Gulika and the Moon are related mutually. • A successful conception results when Jupiter transits the times of Gulika rashi or Gulika navamsha rashi. When Gulika is in any of the first six rashis (Mesha to Kanya), consider the transit of Jupiter from the Gulika rashi. When it is in the last six signs (Tula to Meena), consider the transit from Gulika navamsha rashi. Gulika in Special Lagnas • Gulika in houses 1 or 7 in the Pada Lagna causes grey hair, ill health and serious disease of the stomach. • When AK and Gulika occupy the Karkamsha lagna and both are aspected by the waxing Moon, there ensue losses from repeated theft. • The native dies of poisoning if Gulika in Karkamsha lagna is not aspected by any planet. It may be noted that the same aspects, as applicable to the natal chart, are to be applied to all the special lagna charts like Karakamsha, Pada, Upa-pada, Navamsha, etc. Raja-yoga from Gulika The dispositor of Gulika, a its navamsha lord, placed in a kendra or trikona, or in its own sign or in exaltation, mollifies the adverse effects of Gulika and gives yoga effects, though its lethal propensity (markatwa) would remain intact. The Phaladeepika states: xqfydHkouukFks dsUæxs ok f=dks.ks cfyfu futx`gLFks LoksPpfe=fLFkrs okA jFkxtrqjxk.kka uk;dks ekjrqy;ks efgri`Fkq;'kk% L;kUesfnuhe.MysUæ%AA That is: Let the Gulika be in a kendra, a trikona, or be strong, in its own house, or in exaltation or in a friendly house. A potent Raja-yoga results from this disposition. In chart 3 (vide supra), Gulika is in the eleventh house. Its sign lord Venus is strong, in its own navamsha. The Gulika navamsha rashi lord in time shows a good and strong Raja-yoga. In the horoscope of Mr. Chandra Babu Naidu (Chart 5, born on April 27, 1951; at 6:30 hours IST; at Hyderabad), the lagna is 0S22º16'. Gulika is 1S08º37'. Gulika rashi lord Venus and navamsha lord Jupiter, are in there own signs. Its Dwadashamsha lord Sun is exalted. A strong Raja-yoga is formed and the native becomes powerful during Jupiter dasha. During Jupiter-Venus, the Raja-yoga results would be enhanced. Ms Jai Lalitha (Chart 6) was born on February 24, 1948; 14:34 hours IST; at Chennai. Gulika is at 1S20º14' in the twelfth house. However, its rashi lord Venus is exalted in the tenth house. This exhibits a potential Raja-yoga. To Mitigate the Evil The evil of Gulika must be neutralised by prescribed remedies. Says Parashara: nhia f'koky;s HkDR;k xks?k`rsu çnki;sr~A Parashara thus recommends that one should worship lord Shiva regularly in the evening, bow down to the Sun-god and lord Vishnu in the morning, and light a holy lamp of ‘ghee’ before a Shiva temple. This would defy the evil arising out of an adverse disposition of Gulika. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:" />

20. Chart 9: Born 17-2-1931 at 5.30 p.m. (IST), 22N35; 88E23. Planetry positions: Lagna – Leo; Ketu in Virgo; Saturn and Venus in Sagittarius; Mercury in Capricorn; the Sun and the Moon in Aquarius; Rahu in Pisces; Jupiter ® in Gemini and Mars ® in Cancer. The subject has served a life term sentence on charges of dacoity and murder. The Sun, lord of Lagna, is with the 12th lord the Moon in exact degree conjunction aspected by powerful maraka Saturn, malefic Mars from the 12th house (Mars however has obtained cancellation of his debility) and the 8th lord afflicted Jupiter. Lagna itself is hemmed in between malefic Mars and Ketu indicating a furious, violent and reckless mind. Yogakaraka Mars is relegated to the 12th vitiated by Rahu and Saturn’s location in the 5th house, a powerful maraka for Leo Lagna. Chart 10: Born 1-2-1946 at 8.01 a.m. (IST), 22N35; 88E23. Planetary positions: Lagna – Leo; Jupiter in Libra; Ketu in Sagittarius; the Sun, the Moon, Mercury and Venus in Capricorn; and Rahu, Mars ® and Saturn ® in Gemini. This is the horoscope of the leader of a gang involved in wagon breaking, murder, manufacture of bombs, pipe-guns and all types of illegal secret activities. The subject is said to have links with a political party and is closely connected with some business magnets. He was a detainee under MISA. The unique feature of this horoscope is reflected by the 6th and the 11th. Lord of Lagna, the Sun, is in the 6th with the 12th lord Moon whereas Venus and Mercury are both combust in the 6th aspected by malefic retrograde Mars who is seriously afflicted due to close conjunction with maraka retrograde Saturn and incendiary Rahu, pointing to immoral life and means of livelihood. Jupiter, lord of the 5th, is otherwise unafflicted except for Rahu’s influence falling on him. The Lagna lord the Sun in the 6th aspected by Yogakaraka Mars (afflicted) and Jupiter in an Upachaya (moderately strong) explain the subject’s connection with rich people and top political leaders. The subject is earning huge sums through entirely unfair means. Jupiter’s influence falls on the malefic configuration in the 11th. 22. of Arudha.(ii) Rituals associated with worshiping of the signs, planets etc.(iii) Remedial rituals associated with etc In this short essay I have tried to categorize the content dealt with in any holistic subject taking astrology as an example. Yes, the categorization of subject matter into- Philosophy, Concepts, Rules, Rituals is important in any holistic subject. This fundamental classification should be considered, and any subject should be weighed against this, so as to ascertain whether it is holistic or not. If it is a holistic subject, then it will fit into this categorization and also will not obey the path of scientific method Any comments on this regard are welcome. I also request others to weigh other subjects such as Yoga, Vastu, Naturopathy, Psychology, Ayurveda etc as per these structural norms.
23. vii) Nakshatras (viii) Pancha Bhoota etc I invite others to go into the depths or give an introduction to such concepts in astrology for the benefit of all, for the benefit of beginners for understanding them as concepts. Here, in this discussion, the point I want to emphasis is that, many such concepts forms the foundation for any holistic subject. 3) Rules The Rules can be divided into two – Laws and Principles. Well tested, well founded, unchangeable rules with a mathematical precession are termed Laws. And the flexible and simple rules that are used to describe, modify, expand and apply the Laws can be termed principles. Laws are nothing but, well accepted principles. Let us understand them in the light of astrology. (i) Laws Even though we have the concepts in its place, we need to know the laws to utilize those concepts. In astrology it starts with- (a) Rules to divide the zodiac into Signs and Nakshatras.(b) The 7-fold rule for calculating Yogas (which ultimately lead to prediction) © The rules for calculating Dasa and Gochara. (ii) Principles Let us understand them with some examples- (a) Rules that explain how the Signs, Houses, Nakshatras and Planets can be made use in prediction. (b) Rules that tells us about the 7-fold prediction system and the exceptions related to it. © Rules to be followed while predicting with Dasa and Gochara. Almost the whole of the astrology is nothing but this rules (which base themselves on the fundamental concepts) and there application. 5)Rituals Rituals that is associated with implementation etc. For example- (i) Rituals (Actions) associated with Prasna such as deter
24. planets) In Vastu Sastra– Purusha = Vastu Purusha (Built space + Energy) Prakriti = Vastu (3 dimensional space including as land and environment) In Ayurveda– Purusha = Body (Soul + Mind + Body) Prakriti = Nature (Nature of body + Environment) Any one can expand/explore this or similar philosophic content in astrology or in any other holistic subject. The holistic philosophic content is a thread that is common to all holistic subjects. 2) Concepts (i) Concept of Universe (Zodiac) The universe around us ( for the people living in earth) is spherical in shape. We can use the ecliptic to represent the circular horizontal plane in it and the celestial poles represents the other two directions up and below that sphere. But this spherical representation causes problems, since it is difficult to project the 8 directions correctly in it, and it is difficult to draw. Therefore in astrology the spherical circular shape of the zodiac is represented as a square. Yes, as you know it is the Rasi chakra (The Zodiac), as popularly known to us, starting from the first point of Aries and Aswini stellar division. (Reasons for fixing this point as the first point and dividing the ecliptic into 30 deg and 13 deg 20 min divisions etc is the stuff for another discussion, involving lot of mathematics. Chandrahari has done it in an excellent way in his book Hindu Zodiac) Other similar/fundamental concepts in astrology are : (ii) Kala Purusha (iii) Prakriti-Purusha (iv) Signs (v)Planets (vi) Houses
25. Outline of holistic subjects We can structurally classify the subject matter dealt within any holistic subject (Such as astrology, Vastu sastra, Ayurveda etc) into the following 4 categories: 1) Philosophy 2) Concepts 3) Rules 4) Rituals. Let us understand this in a better way by taking astrology as an example. 1) Philosophy The philosophy such as "Sarva vidyam Brahma vidya Pratishtam" (All knowledge is based on Brahma vidya – the knowledge of the soul and the eternal) is at the root of astrology. Everything is a small print of the eternal. The microcosm and the macrocosm is in rhythmic correlation. We cannot define the eternal Brahman or the duality it has with in, popularly known as Prakriti (Matter) and Purusha (Energy + Time). Brahman represents the spacetime continuum and anything beyond it. It also includes everything the mind can understand and everything beyond it. Brahman (of which space and time is just components) is the reality and what we understand though the classifications and theorems is just the reflection. Mind can only reflect truth and can never comprehend it. The Sun and its reflectionon in water should be entirely different in essence, though seems to be similar. Understanding this truth is the first step in utilizing the study methods (scientific or holistic) provided by the mind itself. So in reality we can not define Brahman (Since every definition has existence only within mind, and Brahman represents mind and things beyond it. Every theorem exists only in mind). Same is the case with Prakriti and Purusha. Even though we cannot define the eternal (Let it be Brahman, Purusha or Prakriti), it can have many practical definitions. For example in Astrology – Purusha = Kala Purusha (Energy + Time) Prakriti = Zodiac (3 Dimensional Space including sky and
