It is found 3/4 miles away from the Thiruvananthapuram Central Railway Station. Lots of bus and train facilities are available. Special trains run from Chennai - Thiruvananthapuram. This place is also named as "Trivandrum". Lots of boarding and lodging facilities are also available. Specials: The Moolavar, Anantha Padmanabhar who is found in Kidantha (Palli Kondulla) kolam is said to be one of the speciality of this sthalam. A Shiva Lingam is found close to the Thirumugham of the Moolavar, which explains to the world that both Hari and Haran are not two different and separate Gods, but they are a Single and should be worshipped as one. Moolavar: The Moolavar of this Thiruvanandhapura Kshetram is Sri Anantha Padmanabhan. Moolavar is found in Kidantha (sleeping) kolam in Bhujangha Sayanam and facing his thirumugham along the Eastern direction. He gave his Prathyaksham for Indiran, Chandiran (the moon god) and Ekadesai Ruthraas. Thayaar The Thaayar of this sthalam is Sri Hari Lakshmi Thaayar. Mangalasasanam: Nammalwar is the only Alwar who has done Mangalasasanam on this Perumal and with 11 Paasurams. Pushkarani: Mathsya Theertham. Padma Theertham. Varaha Theertham. Vimanam: The Vimmanam of this temple is Hema Kooda Vimaanam. Utsavams: There are two main Utsavams done in this Divyadesam in a very great manner. One of the Utsavams fall during the month of March - April and another during the month of September - October. Bothe these utsavams lasts for 10 days. Sthlapuranam : In this sthalam, the Perumal, Sri Padmanabha Swamy, who is also called as "Thamarai Manaalan", is found in Kidantha thirukkolam in Sayana position, sleeping on top of Aadhiseshan, who is also referred to as "Ananthan". Since the Perumal is found in Sayana postion on Ananthan, the Perumal is called as "Anantha Padmanabha Swamy" and the Kshtram is referred to as "Thiru Ananthapuram". The Anantha Padmanabha Perumal is found in Sayana Kolam and since the Perumal is too big is structure, we can get the Dharshan of the Perumal in a single way. We can onl ysee him in 3 Vaayils (entrance). Through the First Vaasal, we can see the Thirumugham (Face) of the Perumal. Through the First Vaasal, the Thiru Unndhi (stomach part) can be seen and Through the Final, Third Vaasal, we can see the Thiruvadi (feet) of the Perumal found in the Garbhagraham. The entire world is Governed and Protected by Emperumaan, Sriman Narayanan. The Indira Lokam (or) otherwise called as "Swargham" is ruled by Indiran and Varunan, the rain god is one of the important person who belong to the Indra Lokam. The rain God, Varunan is necessary for giving the rain to this entire world and thereby making the land fertile and rich in its wealth. Similarly, Indiran is necessary for making all the Grahans (the planets) to revolve and as a result of its revolvement, he should calculate the days count and thereby making the people live and make them happy. Likewise, Ekadasa Rudrars, who are the hamsam of Lord Shivan, the Rudran. All these 3 persons (ie) Indiran, Varunan and Ekadasa Rudrars are given the sabham of doing some wrong things at certain stages. All these 3 persons are given the Sabha Vimocchanam (getting out from the sabham) by the Anantha Padmanabha Perumal of this sthalam who can be seen through 3 vaasals and each vaasal explaining the 3 stages (ie) the birth, the leading of life and the final stage, the death. We know that the Dharshan of the Perumal can be seen separately in 3 different Vaasals. Let us now get into details why the Perumal is giving his seva in this kind. The lifetime of a Person is segregatted into 3 different stages (ie) First is the birth; Second is the time where the life progresses and Final third stage is the death. Through the First vaasal, we can get the Dharshan of the Perumal's Thirumugham. The Perumal, through his divine eyes, which is referred to as the "Thaamarai Kangal" (eyes that is referred to Lotus Flower) is seeing all the lifes of the Jeevathmaas and thereby making them to survive and lead their lifetime. Through the Second vaasal, we can see the "Thiru Unndhi" which is otherwise called as the lowerpart of the stomach. This place is said to be originated place of Lord Brahma devan, who is responsible for giving birth to the Jeevathmaas. In the Third vaasal, we can see the Thiruvadi (feet) of the Perumal, which is the final place where all of the Jeevathmaas merge towards Paramathma. The Thiruvadi of the Perumal is said to be the safest and the pure place, where all the pure rivers originates. How, all the small rivers join (or) merge towards the ocean, all the Jeevaraasi merge towards Thiruvadi (or) Thirupaadham of the Emperumaan, Sriman Narayanan. Periya pirattiyaar, with the name of Kadal Magal Naachiyaar who is found in Thiruppaarkadal in Veetrirundha thriukkolam along with Anantha Padmanabha Perumal is found in this sthalam. Once, there was a saint by named "Divakara yogi", who wanted to get the Mukthi (the ultimate destiny, the moksha) and to attain it, he did the pooja to Saligramam (a precious and Valuable spritiual stone) in this sthalam. At that time, the Perumal came there like a two years old child and took the Saligramam along with him and ran away from that place. On seeing this action of the child, the saint got angry and chased him to get the Saligramam. And finally, the small child went into the big hole of a tree and after going inside the tree, the tree fell down and the Perumal gave his sayana seva as Anantha Padmanabha Swamy. He gave the seva for which the saint, Divakara yogi was doing the daily pooja. This is one of the historic story said about this sthalam. This story which is said about this sthalam has a closer resemblance with the Perumal, who is found in Thirukkannankudi in Chozha Naadu. Like wise in this sthalam, the Perumal who came like a small child who took the Saligramam resembled like a small kid and ate the Perumal who is made of the white butter which doesnt melt. The Perumal who is made of butter, is the Perumal who is done with daily poojas by Vashistar. Finally along with other Maharishis, they caught the small kid, who then gave his seva as "Damodharan" and that Perumal is also named as "Siyamala Meni Perumal", in Nindra Thirukkolam. To explain more on this, a Hanuman Sannadhi is found in front of Yoga Narasimhar sannadhi in this temple. Here, the Special kolam, the Vennai Kaappu kolam for Hanumar is done and it is said that this butter doesnt melt even in hot days. Separate sannadhis for Yoga Narasimhar, Hanuman, Lakshmi Varaghar, Sri Krishnar and Sri Srinivasar are found and are said to be most powerful gods with lots of powers. </TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>
  2. SRI RANGANATHA Revathi is associated with the Janma Nakshatram of Sri Ranganatha , just as Sravana Nakshatram is associated with Sri Venkatesa of Thirumalai as his birth star. Although it is odd to consider a particular nakshatram as the one associated with the Lord, who is never "born", traditionally , Archa Murthys have been associated with a day in an Year that is particularly important to them. It so happens that Sri Ranganatha, the eternal one without an end or beginning has Panguni Revathi as his Birth Star. Sri Ranganayaki has Panguni Uttaram as her Star . The Panguni month is therefore doubly blessed for the devotees of Kasturi Rangan and His Illustrious consort. I will share with you some of the thoughts on the Vedic Significance of the Word Revathi , since Sri Ranganatha is the Veda Purushan . The word Revati or association with the concept of Revati occurs in all of the four Veda Samhitaas. The mantram 35 of Chapter 23 of the Yajur Vedam refers to the Raivati verses this way: MahaanaamnyO REVATYOH viswaa Aaasaa prabhUvaree: I Maigheervidhyuthoh vaaccha: Sucheebhi : samyantu tvaa II (Meaning at One Level): May the Mahaanaamni and Revati Vedic verses spread all the way upto the supreme regions , which appear like the lightning in the clouds and which are recited by the devoted subjects please the mighty Lord! Revatis are the verses from which the Raivata Saaman of the Saama Veda is formed . This name as Raivata Saaman is connected to the Rg Vedic Verse ( Canto I. 30.13 ) , where the word Revati is used to symbolize Wealth, Opulence, Abundant Riches, Prosperity, Brilliance, splendour, Beauty and other kalyana Gunaas of the Lord saluted through the Many names of Vishnu Sahasra Naamam. In another mantram of Yajur Veda, We come across the reference to Revati again. This is the 21st mantram of Canto III : REVATHI ramadhvamasminyonaavasmin Goshtehsmimllokehsmin Kshayeh I Ihaiva stha maapagaata II Here Revati is intrepreted as the Sacred Vedic Speech . It is requested to remain in the Vedic altar , in the Yajna , in the spot of the Yajna and in the house, where the Yajna is being conducted. The prayer is "Oh, Revati ! Do not go away from here! Remain Just here and go not thence is the prayer. Satapatha Brahmana composed by Yajnavalkya explains the intrepretation of Revati as Vedic Speech through his observation: "Vaagvai Revati ". Lord Ranganatha is then the essence of Vedic Speech or the one pervading Vedic Speech or the utterances of the Vedas. This Veda Purusha is requested by another Yajur Mantram to ascend to the Zenith and bless us: Urdvamaaroha --- Raivatheh Saamaani ---- ( Yajur Vedam: X.14 ). Before we focus on the Rg Veda Mantraa that is behind the Raivata Saamans of the Saama Veda, Let us salute the Atharva Vedic Verse referring to the Revati Principle. The Verse is found in the Ninth Khaanda of Atharva Veda in Hymn 7.3 . The Mantram is as follows: VIDHYUJJIHVAA MARUTOH DANTAA REVATIRGREEVAA: KRITTIKAA SKANDHAA DHARMOH VAHA : In this mantra conceptualizing the entire Universe as a Cow, Revati , one of the stars of the Lunar mansion is equated to the neck of the Cosmic Cow. The Krittika star is recognized as the shoulder of this Cow. Symbolism of the neck is invoked here. The central Mantra related to Revati is the Rg Vedic mantram (I.30.13). The entire Thirtieth Chapter of Canto I of Rg Veda is a splendid tribute to the Ananta Kalyana Gunaas of the Lord and a prayer for his blessings . There are 22 verses in this chapter . All but the last three verses deal with the request for Communion with the generous Lord. We will salute the 13th Rk first and then summarize the meaning of the rest of the related verses. REVATHIR NA : SADHAMAADHA INDREH SANTHU TUVIVAAJAA: I KSHUMNATHOH YABHIR MADEHMA II (RG VEDAM : I.30.13 ) Meaning: O Resplendent God! May Thou share our spiritual Joy! May we have abundant nourishment , and May our Medha(Intellect) be unclouded and sharp, so that we are full of devotion for You ! may we Live in a state of unalloyed Bliss in union with You ! A condensed summary (excerpts ) of the other verses of I.30 of Rg Vedam is as follows: Verse 1: Just as Farmers dig a well and fill their fields with water, may our hearts be filled with devotion for You, the resplendent God! Verse 2: May our sublime and pristine devotion for You flow in hundreds and thousands of streams towards You , the resplendent God, just as the river and its tributaries rush towards the Ocean. Verse 3 : May All our devout prayers , which are poured forth to please You be treasured in Your heart like water in the vast Ocean ! Verse 6: May we establish Communion with You for our guidance! Verse 7: On every occasion , in every noble Kainkaryam, we invoke thee , the best among our friends for our protection and happiness . Verse 8: When He listens to our Invocations, He assuredly comes to us with thousands of generous bounties and benedictions.( This is an expression of the Maha Viswaasam of the supplicant.) Verse 9: I too invoke thee ,who created this Universe and the eternal elements. Our ancestors have also been invoking You . Verse 10: Desirous of Communion with You, we invoke You as our best friend and we take refuge in You. Be gracious to us, your dedicated and loyal servants. Verse 12: O Mighty God! O Dispeller of all of the miseries! We yearn for Your friendship and beseech You to respond to our love. Verse 18 & 19 : O God! Desroyer of the Wicked ! Your gift of body to us , is like the gift of chariot with the immortal soul residing within it. It aspires to reach beyond this material world and travel across space to You.----- the spirit soars high in search of the immortal. ONLY YOU CAN TAKE US TO OUR DESIRED DESTINATION (PARAMA PADAHAM ). As we reflect on the 247 verses of the Azhwaars, the echoes of the above Vedic pronouncements are heard again and again. May we seek the protection of the Saranaagatha Rakshakaa every day and approach Him in the spirit of the above Reavti Saamans and request Him to grant us the boon of unceasing memory of Him. 17. Long ago, the Indiran and all the other devars were given the sabham to loose all of their wealth and their power. They got frightened on the Asurars and seeked the help of Sriman Narayanan. To regain their lost power, Sri Emperumaan said that he will help them out in gaining their lost power and advised them to get out the Amirdham (nector) from the paarkadal. At the same time, the Asuras also wanted their existing power to increase, thereby came to extract the Amirdham from paarkadal. At that time, Sri Vishnu to the Avathaar of Kurma, thereby helping to extract the nector. The devars are found on one side and the Asuras are found on the other side, thereby trying to extract the Nector. The first thing to come of it is the "Kaala Khoota Visham" (the poison). Since, this being a dreadful poison, Lord Shiva came and swallowed it and thereby got the name as "Neela Kandan". Since the person's body turns blue after the poison taken, and since the poison stayed on the neck of Lord Shiva, he is given the name as "Neela Kandan" Neela - means blue and Kandan - means the neck. And after the poison came out, lots of good things came out of it to enrich the world. Dhanvanthri, the doctor of perumal, 60 crores dancing Rambhais, their friends, a horse by named "Ucchai Siravaran", the spritual and the wealth giving cow, the Kaama dhenu, Iyaravadha elephant, which was given as the Vaahanam (Vehicle) of Indiran, Kousthuvamani, Sri Lakshmi, Moodevi the tree Karpaga Virutsham, the tree that gives lots of wealth. Varuna Kumari Vaaruni came out. These are the things that emerged out of the Paarkadal, while the Asuraas and the Devars where trying to extract the Amirdham. And finally, the Amirdham, for which they we trying to get came from Paarkadal. Sriman Narayanan doesnt want it to go to the Asuras since that might even increase the strength of them, more. So to help out the Devars in regaining their power, he took an another form (or) avathaar of Mohini, a beautiful women. The beauty of the Mohini could be explained, since it was so beautiful and the people who see her gets disturbed. The Emperumaan, who took the form of Mohini and decided that he will distribute the Amirdham for both Devas and Asuraas. They both agreed for this. On seeing the beauty of Mohini, the Asuraas didn't care much about the Amirtham and all were attracted by the beauty of Mohini. At that time, Sriman Narayanan gave all the Amirdham to the Devars and helped them in getting back their lost power. There is another sweet story of why the perumal took the Mohini avathaar. Sri Lakshmi, who came out of the Paarkadal was so beautiful women in the world. But, by taking Mohini Avathaar the perumal has reduced her thought that she is not only the beautiful women, but some more are there. On seeing the beauty of Mohini avathaar, Lord Shiva was too got attracted towards the beauty and as a result of this only from the Gnana eye of Lord Shiva, Lord Iyyappan was born. The name "Moghur" was given to this sthalam, only because of the beauty of Mohini avathaar taken by Sriman Narayanan. Moghur Emperumaan, who is also called as "Kaalameghap perumal" is found as the same way like Sri Varadharajar is found in Kanchi, having the Gadha in his left hand and the right hand is positioned in such way that it gives the varam for hsi bhaktas in Nindra kolam facing east direction. The temple is surrounded by huge walls and outside the temple we found the "Ksheeraapthi Pushkarani". First is found the entrance of the temple which is facing to the east direction on entering in to the Vaasal, we can find the "Kambatthadi Mandapam". In this mandapam, the stone carved beautiful statues of chinna Marudhu and Periya Marudhu statues are found, who helped for the welfare of this temple. Next to it is found the Garuda Mandapam. In this mandapam, we can see the sculptures of Kothanda Ramar, Sita piratti, Lakshmanan, Kama devan, Rathi devi are found and also a small sannadhi for Garudan is found after this mandapam. As we enter the temple, on the southern side, a separate sannadhi for the perumal is found where he gives his seva in Sayana thirukkolam (Sleeping kolam) along with Sridevi and Bhoomi pirattiyaar. He is found underneath the Aadhiseshan, the bed of the perumal. There are also 7 sayana thirukkolam of this perumal is found and they are : Bogha Sayanam. Veera Sayanam. Sthala Sayanam. Aanandha Sayanam. Bala Sayanam. Uthana Sayanam and Prathana Sayanam. Prathana sayanam is the peculiar type of sayanam of the perumal and it is one of the rare position of to be found. The thaayars are found along the feet of the perumal in sitting position and praying towards him to give his darshan for their devotees. And after finally seeing these, we can find the Moolavar sannadhi, where the Kaalamegapperumal is giving his seva with his erect body well stretched and on the right hand is positioned in such a way, it gives varam for the devotees and on the left hand is found the Gadha and found along with Periya Pirattiyaar and Bhoomi Pirattiyaar in Nindra thirukkolam facing along the east direction. Kaala megham means dark clouds that bears the rain in it and since the rain drops on to the earth to the perumal is named "Kaalamegapperumal" giving all the necessary varams that people needs. The special things that has to be explained about this sthalam is the sudharsana Alwar who is found in this sthalam. He is one of the Panja Aayutham of Sri Vishnu. The Sudharsana Alwar is found with sixteen hands with 16 different weapons in his hands. He is found in "Prathyaaleetha" position which means a person in running to help the bhaktas, who worship him. To the back side of Sudharsana alwar, is found Narasimhar in yoga position. He is found along with Chakra and Sangu in his hands. Both the Moolavar and the Utsavar Vigraham are so identical and it is very rare to see both in the same way. Both, the Sudharsana Alwar and Narasimhar are surrounded by the rays of flame of the fire.

  19. Ahalya Krutha Rama Stotram [The prayer to Lord Rama by Ahalya] [This prayer is taken from Adhyathma Ramayana. Ahalya was cursed by her husband Sage Gouthama to become a stone. She got back her form when Lord Rama's feet touched her.] Aho krutharthosmi Jagan nivasa, They padabhja samlagna raja ganath aham, Sprusami yath padma sankaradhibhir, Vimrusyathe randhitha manasai sada. 1 Oh God of the universe, I am grateful to you, For touching me with, The dust. Of your feet, For it is being longed for, By Lord Brahma and Shiva, With sadness in not getting it and with longing. Aho vichithram, thava rama cheshtitham, Manushyabhavena, vimohitham Jagath, Chalasya jasram charanadhi varjitha, Sampoorna ananada mayothi mayika. 2 Your actions are strange Rama, For you attract the world in a human form, And the world is made to believe in it, You keep about moving everywhere, When you do not have any legs, And with your complete happiness, You are everywhere, which is strange! Yath pada pankaja paraga vichithra gathra, Bhageeradhi bhava virinchi mukhan punathi, Sakshath sa eva mama drug vishayo yadasthe, Kim varnyatha mama pura krutha bhaga deyam. 3 How can I describe the holy deeds, Committed in my previous births, For I am able to see in human form, You ,whose dust of feet makes the river Ganga, Purify Lord Brahma and Lord Shiva. Marthya vathare manuja kruthim harim, Ramaabhidheyam ramaneeya dehinam, Dhanurdharam padma lola lochanam, Bhajami nithyam, na paran bhajishye. 4 I am going to pray him daily, Who is named Rama, Who is but the human incarnation, Of the great Lord Vishnu,, Who has a pretty body, Who is armed with a bow, And who has broad lotus like eyes, And I will not pray any body else. Yath pada pankaja raja sruthibhivimrugyam, Yannabhi pankajabhava kamalasanascha, Yannama sara rasiko Bhagawan purari, Tham ramachandramanisam hrudhi bhavayami. 5 I always pray that Ramachandra, The dust of whose feet is being searched by Vedas, Whose belly gave rise to Lord Brahma sitting on a lotus, And whose name is being constantly meditated by Shiva. Yasyavathara charithani virincha loke, Gayanthi Naradamukha bhava padma jadhya, Aanandaja sruparishiktha kuchagra seema, Vagheeswari cha thamaham saranam prapadhye. 6 I seek the protection of Him, Whose story of incarnation, Is being sung in the land Of Brahma, By Brahma, Shiva, Narada and others, And also sung by goddess Saraswathi, Whose busts are made wet by her tears of joy. Soyam paramathma purusha purana, Esha swayamjyothir anantha aadhya, Mayathanum loka vimohaneeyam, Dathe paranugraha esha rama. 7 This Rama is the greatest God , And the God who is very ancient, He is shining with his own light, And he is the first man and without end, He has a body which by its powers, Bewitches the entire world, He is also the one who, Blesses others forever. Ayam hi viswothbhava samyamana, Meka swa maya guna bhibhitho ya, Virinchi vishnweeswara nama bhedhan, Dathe swathanthra paripoorna athma. 8 Is he not the prime reason for, Creation , upkeep and destruction of the world? And is he not same as Brahma, Shiva, And as Vishnu but looks different by illusion? He is independent, complete and is the soul. Namosthuthe Rama thavangri pankajam, Sriya drutham vakshasi lalitham priyath, Aakranthamekena jagath thrayam pura, Dhyeyam muneendryai mana varjithai. 9 My salutations to your lotus like feet Rama, For these feet are being kept on her heart by Lakshmi, And this is the feet which conquered three worlds, And is being meditated by sages , Who do not have any pride of I. Jagathamadhi bhoothasthvam jagathwam jagadasraya, Sarva bhootheshwa sambanda eko bhathi bhavaan para. 10 You are the first in the universe, You are the basis of the universe, Alone and as the primeval God, You shine in all beings. Omkara vachyasthvam, Rama, vachama vishaya pumaan, Vachya vachaka bhedhena bhavaneva jagan maya. 11 Oh Rama, you are the meaning of Om, You are the true Purusha who is beyond words, You are words, you are their meaning, And you have spread all over the world. Karya karana karthruthwa phala sadhana bhedatha, Eko vibhasi rama thwam mayaya bahu roopaya. 12 Oh Rama You are the act, the cause and the doer, By the differing results obtained, Though you are only one, You shine in different forms. Thwan maya mohitha dhiya sthwam najananthi thathwatha, Manusham thwabhimannyanthe mayinam parameshwaram. 13 Due to the veil thrown by your illusion, Even wise people are no able to know you, They think that you who are the great God, Who has suppressed his form using illusion, As a very ordinary human being. Akasavathwam sarvathra bahiranthargatho ramala, Asam gohyachalo nithya shudho budha sadavyaya. 14 Like the sky you are outside and inside, You are clear, you are stable, you are perennial, You are clean, you are wise and without change. Yoshin moodahamagnathey thathwam jane kadam vibho, Thasmathe sathaso Rama namaskuryamananyadhi. 15 Hey Rama, I am a fool who is ignorant, And how do I know your real self, So keeping my mind permanently in you, I salute you again and again.
