  1. In this modern age, I`m simply happy to chant Hare Krsnah Hare Krsnah Krsnah Krsnah Hare Hare all the time. I don`t have to bother myself with bad karma because to quote from Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu, "... You can embrace me roughly or make me heartbroken by not seeing You. You can do anything You want for You will always be my worshipful Lord unconditionally."( Siksastaka verse 8 )

  2.

    You should understand happiness/easyness and sadnesss/distress both are coming.

    As long as you have your material body, there will always be distress and sadness. The more they worsen when our material bodies become old. When memories are not sharp as they used to be ( when senility or alzheimer`s sets in). Can you be happy all the time when you have osteo or rheumatoid arthritis? Can you be happy if your eye sight is failing? Are you happy when you are deaf and can`t hear anymore the words, " I love you" when your wife says this to you? Material science is working hard to eradicate or minimize as much as possible these anxieties that go with age by looking for newer remedies. Can you be happy all the time when you have a headache or stomach ache? This is not an illusion. It`s a reality we to face in life.

  3. Please permit me to add something regarding this so-called Gandharva marriage. I`m familiar with the term Gandharva because it`s description of the planet where its denizens are musicians. Narada Muni in his past life as Upabarhana was a Gandharva. He was cursed by the Prajapatis for being lusty while doing kirtan in an assembly. Thus, Narada Muni became a sudra in his next life. & yet because of his association with Krsnah devotees, Narada Muni, a sudra turned out to be a great soul(mahajana) devotee and disciple of God. Maybe by associating with Krsnah devotees that both of you and wife are able to extricate yourselves from this anxiety described as Gandharva marriage.

  4.

    yes i agree science has given a lot no doubt.

    But point of srila prabhupada is that people were not much happier now than they were 100 years ago without these thing.

    Please understand this.

    Sant, a hundred years ago ( 1909 ),

    1) When people got injured they died immediately of tetanus and sepsis because tetanus vaccines and antibiotics were not yet available for general use. Were they happy with that?

    2) People mostly walked or rode only on horses.It took them days or weeks to reach their destinations because there were no airplanes yet or fast cars to carry them there. Were they happy with that?

    3) When winter came, there was no electricity to heat their homes. Were they happy with that?

    4) When the pandemic H flu came, millions died because there were no vaccines invented yet to eradicate the problem. Were they happy with that?

    5) Because there were no movies, television and internet, the people`s main recreation was sex. Were they happy with that?:)

    6) When war came, hundreds of thousands of people died in battle because they were not equipped with guided tomahawk missles. Were they happy with that?

    7) People ate usually spoiled food because there were no refrigerators during that time. Were they happy with that?

    8) When people wanted to know what`s happening to the world, it took weeks to know what`s going on in its remote parts because satellites and s were not yet invented. Were they happy with that?

    9) When people got sick with cancer, they thought it was a curse because there were no modern laboratory tests yet to diagnose and cure the problem. Were they happy with that?

    10) People were always afraid of going out with wads of money for fear of being robbed because there were no ATM cards and teller machines yet available. Were they happy with that?

    I could go on and on citing the difference how people lived their lives between the past and the present. That the people are more happier now than when it was a hundred years ago.

  5. Who discovered electricity? Who invented the incandescent bulb? Who invented the telephone? Who invented the electron microscope? Who invented the nuclear submarines? Who invented the internet? Who invented your personal computers and cell phones? Who invented the airplane? Who invented the movies? Who invented the microwave oven? Who first discovered the miracle drug penicillin? Who invented the X-ray machines and CAT scan? Who discovered gun powder? Who invented the first car? They were all scientists, right?

    Whenever you use the computer or light a bulb, drive a car, ride on an airplane, take an antibiotic, cook food in the microwave oven, watch television or a movie, at least we owe it to them for being able to create and discover these wonderful innovations that benefited mankind for the past decades. Yes, we know that man can live on trees and use his arm as pillow. If Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu were alive I believe he would be driving a modest car or use the internet simply for practical reasons.

  6.

    Your experience of love will be yours alone, it cannot be understood by me. Hate is an reaction born out of fear it is not an emotion opposite to Love.

    A dog bites, he doesn't hate. The dog perceives fear and reacts.

    A human being physically harms another, if we delve deep into his psyche it will be the same; a perception of fear which leads to a violent reaction.

    Love Joy Anger and Fear are our primary emotions as beings.

    As Human beings we have a multitude of reactions which we perceive through the primary emotions; A Guru, an experience, meditative contemplation and seeking lead to an understanding of the deeper meanings of these basic emotions. We learn to understand our reactions and our true emotions.

    What we learn is eventually for us and by us. Yes, experiential learning is the best teacher.

    What about reproductive learning? A Guru should know how to teach his student about reproduction. He should instruct his pupil why at the age of puberty the body changes from a more feminine or boyish one. The student will never be able to understand well why these basic emotions like LOve, Joy, Anger and Fear manifest in a rather complex way unlike in childhood. A Guru should know how to deliver and treat a sick baby. A Guru can`t just sit there when his pregnant student is about to give birth to a baby when the nearest help is still miles and miles away. If a midwife could deliver one then why can`t he? When Mary delivered Jesus was there a midwife who watched Mary in pain while she labored? If there was none to help deliver Mary`s baby then who did? You see, I have yet to hear a Guru do a radical one.

  7.

    God is an experience to me. Love is an experience too.

    A guru is one who clears the mental cobwebs that clutter your path to experience God and Love.

    We may project our experience of God onto a Guru, perhaps it is because we need an identification to experience any love...

    Then again, an individual experience is a perception and that perception is always the truth to that individual.

    It`s said that experience is the best teacher. So, do I have to experience love first before saying that it`s true? What about hate the very opposite of love? If we obey the Guru who clears the mental cobwebs that clutter our path to God we will eventually learn to hate what we love.

  8. I like to read a booklet about Srila Prabhupada when he was Abhay Charan de from the time he was born in 1896 until he relinquished his boyhood. How Srila Prabhupada was reared by his parents and relatives. What games did he played. Did he played basketball or hide-and-seek with his neighborhood friends? Did he had fights with boys bigger than his size? Did he have a girlfriend or childhood crush?

    You see, it is where you will find Srila Prabupada`s humaness and vulnerability which we all mere mortals possess. It seems that we all look up to Srila Prabhuapa as if he was God himself in the human form if we keep on adoring him as one. If he were alive today, Srila Prabhupada I believe would have none of it of the accolades we gave to him for being a true and loyal devotee and friend of Lord Krsna.

    I`d rather bow and give my respects to a devotee who cleans the toilet bowls everyday inside the temple of Sri Damodara than one who wants to be treated as if he were God himself.

  9. I wonder why we always give praise and thanks to Abhay Charan de for all the achievements he made in this world as ISKCON`s spiritual master and yet so little we`ve heard from his biological father, Mr Charan de. His Divine Grace AC Bhaktivedanta Swami Prahupada wouldn`t be what he was if his father did not put him to school as well as the financial assistance and spiritual guidance he gave to Abhay during his married life.

    If Abhay`s father turned to Islam when Abhay was only a boy, there would have been no Prabhupada`s books to read. No Srimad Bhagavatam verses in English to quote. No Back to Godhead magazine. No ISKCON. No Matchless Gifts. No nothing at all!

    My glories and obeisances therefore to Abhay`s father Mr Charan de( Srila Prabhupada`s Guru) for being a true and loyal devotee of Lord Krsna(Govinda).

  10. Tantrums

    -------

    There was this story of a man who asked Lord Siva the power to cut someone`s head-off. Because the man was his devotee, Lord Siva gave him a tantra-power to do so. The man was so happy because anyone who displeased him had his head cut-off. Thus whenever the man went into tantrums everyone around him would ran away to save their necks. The man became so powerful that just by putting his hand on someone`s head he disliked, immediately that head was severed from the body. The man was so puffed-up with power and pride that he thought, " What if I put my hand on Lord Siva`s head?" When Lord Siva heard of it, the Lord got so mad that he swiftly cut the man`s head off. The lesson here is that if you are that kind who`s prone to tantrums because your expectations were not met be sure they are not directed to one who is a pure devotee of Lord Krsna. Because you might correspondingly have your head taken-off after receving in exchange for your tantrums Lord Krsna`s sharp sudarsana chakra disc.

  11. In our dialect/national language the word Guru means teacher, one who can impart knowledge to those who are wanting. From kindergarten to med school, I can`t count how many Gurus who went through my life who taught me knowledge. The most prominent is my father, Dr. Mario Cochiengco Mabalay(79 years old at present). He taught me pathology and dermatology in med school and family medicine when I became a full-pledged physician in 1987. The most important lesson I learned from him most was his humility not the medical subjects he taught to his students and me. From babyhood to adulthood my Guru was always there for me through thick and thin guiding me to what I am today.

    Yes, I consider my father my Guru because after all he created me. You see, even before I was born, he dreamed of a character in the comic magazine he loved to read and vowed to call his future 3rd child, Melvin.

    I`m the realization of that comic character in the magazine entitled. Melvin & Audrey.

  12.

    He is more important than God.

    We cannot serve God directly.

    We can only serve his pure devotees.

    The genuine acharya, pure devotee spiritual master (not to be confused with ISKCON imitations) is much more important than God to the disciple because it is only through the spiritual master than we can approach Krishna.

    God (Krishna) does not accept direct service.

    He only accepts service rendered to and through his pure devotees.

    So, in that way, the true acharya spiritual master is more important to the disciple than God directly.

    Only a buffoon advocates direct service to Krishna.

    There is no such thing for the fallen jivas.

    It doesn't matter if the Guru is God.

    The pure devotees control even Krishna.

    So, even if you aren't God, if you can control God it is just as good.

    In other words, I can`t serve the pure devotee acharya and Krsna if I sincerely and simply chant: Hare Krsna Hare Krsna Krsna Krsna Hare Hare/Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare?

    --------------------

  13. "But my dear Sir, if I accept Lord Chaitanya as my Spiritual Master, He wont consider me a great fool. Therefore he will more or less punish by me saying that because I`m not a fool I have the capacity to study Vedanta. In turn he wont allow me to chant Hare Krsna Hare Krsna Krsna Hare Hare/Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare. He`ll tell me if I chant the Hare Krsna mantra it wiont make me perfect."

  14. From the Book the Teachings of Lord Chaitanya I quote: The astonishing fact is that Lord Chaitanya. although the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Krsna, never displayed himself as Krsna, Rather, whenever he was detected by intelligent devotees as Lord Krsna and was addressed as Lord Krsna, he denied it. Indeed, he sometimes placed his hands over his ears, protesting that one shouldn`t be addressed as the Supreme Lord.Indirectly, he was teaching the mayavada philosophers that one should not falsely pose himself as the Supreme Lord and thereby misguide people. Nor should followers be foolish enough to accept anyone and everyone as the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

    Note: That`s why until today I have not accepted a Guru who`ll initiate and lead me home back to Godhead.

  15. We could discuss this movie in a spiritual way why there are so many individuals in India who dwell in the slums. Or why Lord Rama appeared in the movie when Jamal and Salim`s lives were in danger, or why sporadic riots between the Indian Muslims and Indian Hindus occur. You see, Salim before the movie ended embraced Islam and got himself killed( at the moment of his death Salim uttered " God is great!" )for saving Latika, etc.

  16. Nominated for Oscar`s best picture award, it`s a story that revolves around three characters in the movie. They are Jamal, the witty kid who connects his answers to the questions raised from his wretched childhood who eventually won 20 million rupees from an answer and question contest; Salim, Jamal`s toughie elder brother who envied Jamal for being a romantic and a sentimentalist, and Latika, the girl whom Jamal fell in love with.

    My View:

    You will fall in love and be entertained in the movie if you picture Jamal playing the role of Krsna, Salim as Balarama, and Latika as Radha. That`s why I wont be surprised if this movie Slum Dog Millionaire wins Oscar`s best motion picture of the year award.

    Try and see it for yourselves.

    "Stringman" - Neil Young

    You can say the soul is gone

    And the feeling is just not there

    Not like it was so long ago.

    On the empty page before you

    You can fill in what you care

    Try to make it new before you go.

    Take the simple case of the sarge

    Who can't go back to war

    'Cause the hippies

    tore down everything

    that he was fighting for...

    That song reminds me of Woodstock 1969. I was only in high-school then when my biological brother(manav) and his friends were smoking ganja and imbibing amphetamines. Oh, how I love to hear the drums in "Soul Sacrifice" accompanied by the electrifying sounds coming from Santana`s vina. The song, " With a little help from my friends," sang by Joe Cocker were intoxicating. & yet during those times I didn`t even know Krsna even existed. It was Only Ten Years After(1979) that a childhood friend revealed to me the long and winding road which was the Hare Krsna maha mantra. Woodstock `69 was Prabhupada written all over.

    Srimad-Bhagavatam : Canto 1:"Creation" : SB 1.18: Maharaja Pariksit Cursed by a Brahmana Boy :

    <!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]--><?xml:namespace prefix = o />

    SB 1.18.32 : The sage had a son who was very powerful, being a brāhmaṇa's son. While he was playing with inexperienced boys, he heard of his father's distress, which was occasioned by the King. Then and there the boy spoke as follows.

    <!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->

    PURPORT :

    Due to Mahārāja Parīkṣit's good government, even a boy of tender age, who was playing with other inexperienced boys, could become as powerful as a qualified brāhmaṇa. This boy was known as Śṛṅgi, and he achieved good training in brahmacarya by his father so that he could be as powerful as a brāhmaṇa, even at that age. But because the age of Kali was seeking an opportunity to spoil the cultural heritage of the four orders of life, the inexperienced boy gave a chance for the age of Kali to enter into the field of Vedic culture. Hatred of the lower orders of life began from this brāhmaṇa boy, under the influence of Kali, and thus cultural life began to dwindle day after day. The first victim of brahminical injustice was Mahārāja Parīkṣit, and thus the protection given by the King against the onslaught of Kali was slackened.

    <!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->

    1.18.33 The brāhmaṇa's son, Śṛṅgi, said:] O just look at the sins of the rulers who, like crows and watchdogs at the door, perpetrate sins against their masters, contrary to the principles governing servants.

    <!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->

    Purport: The brāhmaṇas are considered to be the head and brains of the social body, and the kṣatriyas are considered to be the arms of the social body. The arms are required to protect the body from all harm, but the arms must act according to the directions of the head and brain. That is a natural arrangement made by the supreme order, for it is confirmed in the Bhagavad-gītā that four social orders or castes, namely the brāhmaṇas, the kṣatriyas, the vaiśyas and the śūdras, are set up according to quality and work done by them. Naturally the son of a brāhmaṇa has a good chance to become a brāhmaṇa by the direction of his qualified father, as a son of a medical practitioner has a very good chance to become a qualified medical practitioner. So the caste system is quite scientific. The son must take advantage of the father's qualification and thus become a brāhmaṇa or medical practitioner, and not otherwise. Without being qualified, one cannot become a brāhmaṇa or medical practitioner, and that is the verdict of all scriptures and social orders. Herein Śṛṅgi, a qualified son of a great brāhmaṇa, attained the required brahminical power both by birth and by training, but he was lacking in culture because he was an inexperienced boy. By the influence of Kali, the son of a brāhmaṇa became puffed up with brahminical power and thus wrongly compared Mahārāja Parīkṣit to crows and watchdogs. The King is certainly the watchdog of the state in the sense that he keeps vigilant eyes over the border of the state for its protection and defense, but to address him as a watchdog is the sign of a less-cultured boy. Thus the downfall of the brahminical powers began as they gave importance to birthright without culture. The downfall of the brāhmaṇa caste began in the age of Kali. And since brāhmaṇas are the heads of the social order, all other orders of society also began to deteriorate. This beginning of brahminical deterioration was highly deplored by the father of Śṛṅgi, as we will find.

    <!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->

    1.18.34 The descendants of the kingly orders are definitely designated as watchdogs, and they must keep themselves at the door. On what grounds can dogs enter the house and claim to dine with the master on the same plate?

    <!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->

    Purport: The inexperienced brāhmaṇa boy certainly knew that the King asked for water from his father and the father did not respond. He tried to explain away his father's inhospitality in an impertinent manner befitting an uncultured boy. He was not at all sorry for the King's not being well received. On the contrary, he justified the wrong act in a way characteristic of the brāhmaṇas of Kali-yuga. He compared the King to a watchdog, and so it was wrong for the King to enter the home of a brāhmaṇa and ask for water from the same pot. The dog is certainly reared by its master, but that does not mean that the dog shall claim to dine and drink from the same pot. This mentality of false prestige is the cause of downfall of the perfect social order, and we can see that in the beginning it was started by the inexperienced son of a brāhmaṇa. As the dog is never allowed to enter within the room and hearth, although it is reared by the master, similarly, according to Śṛṅgi, the King had no right to enter the house of Śamīka Ṛṣi. According to the boy's opinion, the King was on the wrong side and not his father, and thus he justified his silent father.

    <!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->

    1.18.35 After the departure of Lord Śrī Kṛṣṇa, the Personality of Godhead and supreme ruler of everyone, these upstarts have flourished, our protector being gone. Therefore I myself shall take up this matter and punish them. Just witness my power.

    <!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->

    PURPORT

    The inexperienced brāhmaṇa, puffed up by a little brahma-tejas, became influenced by the spell of Kali-yuga. Mahārāja Parīkṣit gave license to Kali to live in four places as mentioned hereinbefore, but by his very expert government the personality of Kali could hardly find the places allotted him. The personality of Kali-yuga, therefore, was seeking the opportunity to establish authority, and by the grace of the Lord he found a hole in the puffed-up, inexperienced son of a brāhmaṇa. The little brāhmaṇa wanted to show his prowess in destruction, and he had the audacity to punish such a great king as Mahārāja Parīkṣit. He wanted to take the place of Lord Kṛṣṇa after His departure. These are the principal signs of upstarts who want to take the place of Śrī Kṛṣṇa under the influence of the age of Kali. An upstart with a little power wants to become an incarnation of the Lord. There are many false incarnations after the departure of Lord Kṛṣṇa from the face of the globe, and they are misleading the innocent public by accepting the spiritual obedience of the general mass of people to maintain false prestige. In other words, the personality of Kali got the opportunity to reign through this son of a brāhmaṇa, Śṛṅgi.

    <!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->

    <!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->

    1.18.36 : The son of the rsi, his eyes red-hot with anger, touched the water of the River Kauśika while speaking to his playmates and discharged the following thunderbolt of words.

    <!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->

    Purport: The circumstances under which Mahārāja Parīkṣit was cursed were simply childish, as it appears from this verse. Śṛṅgi was showing his impudency amongst his playmates, who were innocent. Any sane man would have prevented him from doing such great harm to all human society. By killing a king like Mahārāja Parīkṣit, just to make a show of acquired brahminical power, the inexperienced son of a brāhmaṇa committed a great mistake.

    <!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->

    1.18.37 :The brāhmaṇa's son cursed the King thus: On the seventh day from today a snake-bird will bite the most wretched one of that dynasty [Mahārāja Parīkṣit] because of his having broken the laws of etiquette by insulting my father.

    <!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->

    Puport: Thus the beginning of the misuse of brahminical power began, and gradually the brāhmaṇas in the age of Kali became devoid of both brahminical powers and culture. The brāhmaṇa boy considered Mahārāja Parīkṣit to be kulāṅgāra, or the wretched of the dynasty, but factually the brāhmaṇa boy himself was so because only from him did the brāhmaṇa caste become powerless, like the snake whose poisoned teeth are broken. The snake is fearful as long as his poison teeth are there, otherwise he is fearful only to children. The personality of Kali conquered the brāhmaṇa boy first, and gradually the other castes. Thus the whole scientific system of the orders of society in this age has assumed the form of a vitiated caste system, which is now being uprooted by another class of men similarly influenced by the age of Kali. One should see to the root cause of vitiation and not try to condemn the system as it is, without knowledge of its scientific value.

    <!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->

    1.18.38 : Thereafter, when the boy returned to the hermitage, he saw a snake on his father's shoulder, and out of his grief he cried very loudly.

    <!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->

    PURPORT

    The boy was not happy because he committed a great mistake, and he wanted to be relieved of the burden on his heart by crying. So after entering the hermitage and seeing his father in that condition, he cried loudly so that he might be relieved. But it was too late. The father regretted the whole incident.

    <!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->

    1.18.39: O brāhmaṇas, the rsi, who was born in the family of Aṅgirā Muni, hearing his son crying, gradually opened his eyes and saw the dead snake around his neck.

    <!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->

    1.18.40 : He threw the dead snake aside and asked his son why he was crying, whether anyone had done him harm. On hearing this, the son explained to him what had happened.

    <!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->

    PURPORT : The father did not take the dead snake on his neck very seriously. He simply threw it away. Actually there was nothing seriously wrong in Mahārāja Parīkṣit's act, but the foolish son took it very seriously, and being influenced by Kali he cursed the King and thus ended a chapter of happy history.

    <!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->

    1.18.41 : The father heard from his son that the King had been cursed, although he should never have been condemned, for he was the best amongst all human beings. The ṛṣi did not congratulate his son, but, on the contrary, began to repent, saying: Alas! What a great sinful act was performed by my son. He has awarded heavy punishment for an insignificant offense.

    <!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->

    PURPORT :The king is the best of all human beings. He is the representative of God, and he is never to be condemned for any of his actions. In other words, the king can do no wrong. The king may order hanging of a culprit son of a brāhmaṇa, but he does not become sinful for killing a brāhmaṇa. Even if there is something wrong with the king, he is never to be condemned. A medical practitioner may kill a patient by mistaken treatment, but such a killer is never condemned to death. So what to speak of a good and pious king like Mahārāja Parīkṣit? In the Vedic way of life, the king is trained to become a rājarṣi, or a great saint, although he is ruling as king. It is the king only by whose good government the citizens can live peacefully and without any fear. The rājarṣis would manage their kingdoms so nicely and piously that their subjects would respect them as if they were the Lord. That is the instruction of the Vedas. The king is called narendra, or the best amongst the human beings. How then could a king like Mahārāja Parīkṣit be condemned by an inexperienced, puffed-up son of a brahmaṇa, even though he had attained the powers of a qualified brāhmaṇa?

    Since Śamīka Ṛṣi was an experienced, good brāhmaṇa, he did not approve of the actions of his condemned son. He began to lament for all that his son had done. The king was beyond the jurisdiction of curses as a general rule, and what to speak of a good king like Mahārāja Parīkṣit. The offense of the King was most insignificant, and his being condemned to death was certainly a very great sin for Śṛṅgi. Therefore Ṛṣi Śamīka regretted the whole incident.

    <!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->

    <!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->

    If Maharaja Pariksit was not cursed by Srngi, the King wouldn`t have fasted for seven days until death hearing Srimad Bhagavatam from Sukadeva Goswami. The curse was a blessing in disguise.

  19. Tonight we have experienced a lunar eclipse. It`s auspicious because the moon was eclipsed at the time of Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu`s birth in Mayapur in the town of Nadia just after sunset on the evening of the 23rd Phalguna 1407 Sakabha, answering to the 18th of February, 1486, of the Christian Era( Taken from the Prologue by Bhaktivinoda Thakura, page xiii in the book The Golden Avatar- The Teachings of Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu Philippine Copyright 1981).

    The lunar eclipse is just 9 days ahead of Lord Chaitanya`s birthday. However, the Chinese consider this cosmic event as a bad omen. Please correct me if I`m wrong.
