Misconceptions about Kalki Avatar

BY: PAYONIDHI DASA

Jan 12, MARYLAND, USA (SUN) — Better to hear from Srila Prabhupada directly.

Jadurani has previously presented that there is no Kalki Avatar in this Kali yuga. Having been a former siksa/diksa disciple of Narayana Maharaja (after the fall of Harikesa) we looked into this carefully and asked many questions. However, though many persons have accepted this on faith (blind faith, in our eyes), there is no sastric evidence to support this. First of all, Srila Prabhupada's many quotes are very clear:

"Those who are demons, those who are sinful, nature's law is to place him in such condition that he will become more and more a demon so that he will never be able to understand what is God. This is nature's law. If you want to forget God, then God will put you in such a condition that you can never understand what is God. That is demonic life. That time is also coming. At the present moment, still a few men are interested, what is God. Arto artharti jijnasu jnani. But time is coming ahead when there will be no sense to understand God. That is the last stage of Kali-yuga, and at that time Kalki avatara, Kalki avatara will come. At that time there is no preaching of God consciousness, simply killing, simply killing. Kalki avatara with His sword will simply massacre. Then again Satya-yuga will come. Again golden age will come."

Srila Prabhupada Lecture, 08-06-73, London

"Thereafter, at the conjunction of two yugas, the Lord of the creation will take His birth as the Kalki incarnation and become the son of Visnu Yasa. At this time the rulers of the earth will have degenerated into plunderers. Purport: Here is another foretelling of the advent of Lord Kalki, the incarnation of Godhead. He is to appear at the conjunction of the two yugas, namely at the end of Kali-yuga and the beginning of Satya-yuga. The cycle of the four yugas, namely Satya, Treta, Dvapara and Kali, rotates like the calendar months. The present Kali-yuga lasts 432,000 years, out of which we have passed only 5,000 years after the Battle of Kuruksetra and the end of the regime of King Pariksit. So there are 427,000 years balance yet to be finished. Therefore at the end of this period, the incarnation of Kalki will take place, as foretold in the Srimad-Bhagavatam. The name of His father, Visnu Yasa, a learned brahmana, and the village Sambhala are also mentioned. As above mentioned, all these foretellings will prove to be factual in chronological order. That is the authority of Srimad-Bhagavatam."

Srimad-Bhagavatam 1:3:25

"In Vedic literature there are names like mleccha and yavana. The mlecchas are understood to be those who do not follow the Vedic principles. In former days, the mlecchas were fewer, and Visvamitra Muni cursed his sons to become mlecchas. But in the present age, Kali-yuga, there is no need of cursing, for people are automatically mlecchas. This is only the beginning of Kali-yuga, but at the end of Kali-yuga the entire population will consist of mlecchas because no one will follow the Vedic principles. At that time the incarnation Kalki will appear. Mleccha-nivaha-nidhane kalayasi kara-balam. He will kill all the mlecchas indiscriminately with his sword."

Srimad-Bhagavatam 9:16:33 Purport

"The next avatar incarnation is Kalki. That is yet to take place. Kalki avatara will appear at the end of this age, Kali- yuga. The age of Kali-yuga, duration of this age is still to be, I mean to say, fulfilled in 400,000's of years. So at the end of Kali, that means at the last stage, after about 400,000's of years, the incarnation of Kali will appear. That is predicted in the Vedic literatures, as Lord Buddha's appearance was also predicted in the Srimad-Bhagavatam. And Srimad-Bhagavatam was compiled five thousand years ago, and Lord Buddha appeared about 2,500 years ago. Therefore about Lord Buddha's appearance it is predicted that at the beginning of Kali-yuga Lord Buddha will appear. There was prediction, and that has actually come to be true. Similarly, there is prediction about Kalki avatara, and that will also come to be true. So at that time Lord Kalki's business will be simply to kill. No instruction. Just like... In Bhagavad- gita Lord Krsna gave instruction in the shape of Bhagavad-gita. But at the end of Kali-yuga, people will be so much degraded that there is no more possibility to give any instruction. They will not be able to understand even. At that time the only weapon will be to kill them. And one who is killed by the Lord, he also gets salvation. That is God's all-merciful quality. Either He protects or He kills, the result is the same. So that will be the last stage of this Kali-yuga, and after that, again Satya-yuga, the age of religiosity, will begin. These are the statements of Vedic literature."

Srila Prabhupada Lecture, 02-18-70, Los Angeles

© Bhaktivedanta Book Trust. Excerpted from texts and purports of HDG A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Srila Prabhupada.

This is just a few out of hundreds of quotes from Srila Prabhupada's teachings about Kalki avatar.

Also in the 12 Canto of Srimad Bhagavatam:

SB 12.2.18: Lord Kalki will appear in the home of the most eminent brahmana of Asambhala village, the great soul Visnuyasa.

SB 12.2.19-20: Lord Kalki, the Lord of the universe, will mount His swift horse Devadatta and, sword in hand, travel over the earth exhibiting His eight mystic opulences and eight special qualities of Godhead. Displaying His unequaled effulgence and riding with great speed, He will kill by the millions those thieves who have dared dress as kings.

SB 12.2.21: After all the impostor kings have been killed, the residents of the cities and towns will feel the breezes carrying the most sacred fragrance of the sandalwood paste and other decorations of Lord Vasudeva, and their minds will thereby become transcendentally pure.

SB 12.2.22: When Lord Vasudeva, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, appears in their hearts in His transcendental form of goodness, the remaining citizens will abundantly repopulate the earth.

SB 12.2.23: When the Supreme Lord has appeared on earth as Kalki, the maintainer of religion, Satya-yuga will begin, and human society will bring forth progeny in the mode of goodness.

SB 12.2.24: When the moon, the sun and Brhaspati are together in the constellation Karkata, and all three enter simultaneously into the lunar mansion Pusya at that exact moment the age of Satya, or Krta, will begin.

From this chapter and the previous chapter of the 12th Canto, chapter one, it is clear Sukadeva Goswami is talking about this Kali yuga.

There is much more than can be said about this issue, all 4 Vaisnava Sampradayas accept that Kalki appears in this Kali yuga. Also, the followers of Madhavacarya dress Udupi Krsna up for one day in August to celebrate when Lord Kalki will appear (however they the followers of Sripad Madhvacarya don't understand Lord Caitanya, who is channa avatar, hidden incarnation.)

Srila Prabhupada has also clearly stated the golden age of Lord Caitanya lasts 10,000 years, so Mother Jadurani and Narayana Maharaja have many misconceptions about Kalki avatar. Personally, we prefer to take things straight from Srila Prabhupada.

No Kalki Avatar In This Kali Yuga

BY JADURANI DASI

EDITORIAL, Jun 21 (VNN) — I first met Srila Narayana Maharaj about seven years ago, at the Rupa Sanatana Gaudiya Math, his temple near Seva Kunja in Vrndavan. Since that time I'd always strongly felt Srila Prabhupada's presence when ever I met Srila Maharaja. His answers to any of my questions seemed as brilliant and astounding as those of Srila Prabhupada, and everything he said gave me new insight into Srila Prabhupada's books. After several meetings with him, therefore, I was so overwhelmed that I asked him, "Can I understand that when you tell me something, that it is Srila Prabhupada telling me through you?" With a soft smile he answered, "if you have got that faith." And daily my faith became stronger and stronger.

One thing he said, however, I couldn't reconcile. Srila Maharaja mentioned a few times that in this age of Kali, Kalki avatar doesn't come. Maharaja would quote Srila Bhaktivinode Thakur, who had said that "because Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu came in this particular Kali Yuga, this Kali Yuga is called Dhanya Kali, blessed Kali." Although in other Kali Yugas Kalki does come, in this one He doesn't. On one hand I had no doubts in Srila Maharaj, but on the other hand I still could not reconcile the apparent difference in Srila Prabhupada's statement. For years I had been hearing the cassette tape of Srila Prabhupada singing "Sri Dasavatar- Stotram" by Sri Jayadeva Goswami, " Kesava! dhrta-Kalki-sarira jaya jadadisa hare." Then, in his purport to the song, Srila Prabhupada had explained that at the end of Kali Yuga there will be no preaching because people will be too degraded and sinful to understand Krsna Conscious philosophy. So Kalki comes, not to preach, but to kill all the sinners and usher in the next Satya Yuga. In a humble way I told this to Srila Maharaj and he answered, "Not in this Kali Yuga. He won't come. But if he comes, no harm; he will be raising his arms and chanting 'Hari Bol! Hari Bol!' in Mahaprabhu's sankirtan movement."

So I let it go. I had faith in both Srila Prabhupada and Srila Maharaja. Diksa Guru and Siksa Guru are one. Srila Prabhupada is both my diksa and siksa guru and Srila Maharaja is my siksa guru. I knew that when Srila Prabhupada wanted to, he would show me how to reconcile the apparent contradiction. Later, in studying one of our Gaudiya Vaisnava songs, Ke Jabi Ke Jabi Bhai, by Srila Locan dasa Thakura, I read, "dhanya kali-yugera caitanya-avatar," that is, Sri Caitanya-Avatara is the good fortune (dhanya) of this Kali Yuga (He does not come in every Kali Yuga. He comes as the Yuga Avatara of Kali Yuga only once in a day of Lord Brahma, that is, once every 2,000 Kali Yugas.) This convinced me, but still, I had a desire to hear more from Srila Prabhupada himself, since according to my memory, I'd previously heard the opposite from him.

Then, about two months ago, on a casual reading of Caitanya Caritamrta, I found it in Madhya Lila chapter six, in the discussions between Sarvabauma Battacarya and Gopinatha Acarya. Srila Prabhupada was quoting Gopinatha Acharya, "in this age of Kali there is no lila avatar of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Therefore He is triyuga.

That is one of His holy names." In the purport, Kalki is mentioned as the last of the twenty-five Lila Avatars. At the end of the purport, Prabhupada wrote: "Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu is not mentioned as a lila avatar because he is an incarnation in disguise (channa avatar). In this age of Kali there are no lila avatars, but there is an incarnation of the Lord manifested in the body of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu. This has been explained in Srimad Bhagavatam."

At this point I turned to Srimad Bhagavatam, first canto chapter three. There Prabhupada had written that Kalki will come after 427,000 years. Did that mean Srila Prabhupada contradicted himself?. No, of course not. Everything is reconciled. Kalki (and all other incarnations) come in the body of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu. This is confirmed in Caitanya Caritamrta (Adi Lila 4.5-16). These verses explain how, just as all incarnations come in Krsna's body when he descends, so Lord Caitanya, is also Krsna Himself, and the same applies to Him "When the complete Supreme Personality of Godhead descends, all other incarnations meet together within Him."

There were many other instances where I could understand by Srila Narayana Maharaja's association that I had so little understanding of Srila Prabhupada.

Srila Maharaja has been giving me a deeper understanding. He is always showing me the glory of Srila Prabhupada, that he is coming in the line Srila Bhaktivinode Thakur, Srila Locan dasa Thakur, Sri Krsna das Kaviraja, Srila Rupa Goswami, and ultimately Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, who came to give what no other incarnation or acharya gave for a long time--since the last time Lord Caitanya came--in the previous day of Brahma.

Even with Srila Prabhupada's words in front of me for the last thirty-two years, being a conditioned soul, I can not understand him fully. Of course, "it takes one to know one." Only a Maha-bhagavata can understand the mood and siddhanta of another Maha-bhagavata. And only he can help the conditioned souls understand.

Jai Sri Krsna Caitanya and Jai Kalki Avatara

BY: LOKAGURU DASA

Jan 17, USA (SUN) — Payonidhi prabhu has quoted many wonderful purports and lectures to support his contention that Kalki Avatara comes in every Kali yuga (Misconceptions about Kalki Avatara). The question is not whether Sri Kalki appears in this Kali yuga, but how He appears.

Firstly, it is a fact that Lord Caitanya appears one time in a day of Lord Brahma (1 out of 2,000 Kali yugas). Therefore, in this one Kali yuga, our Kali yuga, who is the yuga avatara? Now, Payonidhi prabhu may have forgotten about Srila Prabhupada writing in Caitanya-caritamrta Madhya 6.99 purport that:

“In this Age of Kali there are no lila-avataras, but there is an incarnation of the Lord manifested in the body of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu.”

Caitanya-caritamrta Madhya 6.98-104:

(Madhya 6.98) "In Srimad-Bhagavatam and Mahabharata it is stated that the Lord appears directly, but you say that in this age there is no manifestation or incarnation of Lord Visnu.”

(Madhya 6.99) "In this Age of Kali there is no lila-avatara of the Supreme Personality of Godhead; therefore He is known as Triyuga. That is one of His holy names."

PURPORT

“A lila-avatara is an incarnation of the Lord who performs a variety of activities without making any special endeavor. He always has one pastime after another, all full of transcendental pleasure, and these pastimes are fully controlled by the Supreme Person. The Supreme Person is totally independent of all others in these pastimes. ...... In his book Laghu-bhagavatamrta, Srila Rupa Gosvami has enumerated the following twenty-five lila-avataras: Catuh-sana, Narada, Varaha, Matsya, Yajna, Nara-Narayana, Kapila, Dattatreya, Hayasirsa (Hayagriva), Hamsa, Prsnigarbha, Rsabha, Prthu, Nrsimha, Kurma, Dhanvantari, Mohini, Vamana, Parasurama, Raghavendra, Vyasa, Balarama, Krsna, Buddha and Kalki.

Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu is not mentioned as a lila-avatara because He is an incarnation in disguise (channa-avatara). In this Age of Kali there are no lila-avataras, but there is an incarnation of the Lord manifested in the body of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu. This has been explained in Srimad-Bhagavatam.”(SB11.5.31-32)

(Madhya 6.100) “Gopinatha Acarya continued, "There is certainly an incarnation in every age, and such an incarnation is called the yuga-avatara. But your heart has become so hardened by logic and argument that you cannot consider all these facts.”

(Madhya 6.101) "In the past, your son has had bodies of three different colors, according to the age. These colors were white, red and yellow. In this age [Dvapara-yuga] He has accepted a blackish body.”

PURPORT

This verse from Srimad-Bhagavatam (10.8.13) was spoken by Garga Muni when he was performing the rituals at Lord Krsna's name-giving ceremony. He states that the incarnations of the Lord in other ages had been white, red and yellow. This yellow color refers to Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, whose bodily complexion was yellowish. This confirms that in the past Kali-yugas, the Lord also had incarnated in a body that was yellow in hue. It is understood that the Lord incarnates in different colors for the different yugas (Satya, Treta, Dvapara and Kali). Accepting the color yellow (pita), as well as other characteristics, the Lord incarnated as Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu. This is the verdict of all Vedic authorities.

(Madhya 6.102) "In the Age of Kali, as well as in Dvapara-yuga, the people offer prayers to the Supreme Personality of Godhead by various mantras and observe the regulative principles of the supplementary Vedic literature. Now please hear of this from me.”

PURPORT

This is a quotation from Srimad-Bhagavatam (11.5.31).

(Madhya 6.103) "In this Age of Kali, those who are intelligent perform the congregational chanting of the Hare Krsnamaha-mantra, worshiping the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who appears in this age always describing the glories of Krsna. That incarnation is yellowish in hue and is always associated with His plenary expansions [such as Sri Nityananda Prabhu] and personal expansions [such as Gadadhara], as well as His devotees and associates [such as Svarupa Damodara]."

This verse from Srimad-Bhagavatam (11.5.32) is explained by Sri Jiva Gosvami in his Krama-sandarbha, as quoted by Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura in regard to the explanation of Adi-lila, Third Chapter, verse 52.

(Madhya 6.104) "The Lord [in the incarnation of Gaurasundara] has a golden complexion. Indeed, His entire body, which is very nicely constituted, is like molten gold. Sandalwood pulp is smeared all over His body. He will take the fourth order of spiritual life [sannyasa] and will be very self-controlled. He will be distinguished from Mayavadi sannyasis in that He will be fixed in devotional service and will spread the sankirtana movement."

PURPORT

“Gopinatha Acarya quoted this verse from the Mahabharata's Visnu-sahasra-nama-stotra.

Thus, according to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Krsna Das Kaviraja in Caitanya-caritamrta, Lord Caitanya is the avatara for Kali yuga, not Kalki Avatara.

Each of us should ask ourselves, is Srila Prabhupada contradicting himself or is this just an apparent contradiction? If this was an actual contradiction (if someone were to choose Payonidhi's quotes as the truth and exclude Lokaguru's quotes, this equals contradiction; or if someone were to choose Lokaguru's quotes and reject Payonidhi's quotes this would also equal contradiction.) Then that person(s) would be saying that Srila Prabhupada makes mistakes or is not a pure devotee. This is not the case because Srila Prabhupada is an uttama adhikari pure devotee, therefore this must be an apparent contradiction.

Is there any sastra that would harmonize the two sets of quotes? Srila Prabhupada himself reconciles the apparent contradiction in Caitanya-caritamrta Adi 4.10-12 where He writes that:

(CC Adi 4.10): “When the complete Supreme Personality of Godhead descends, all other incarnations of the Lord meet together within Him.”

(Adi 4.11-12) “Lord Narayana, the four primary expansions [Vasudeva, Sankarsana, Pradyumna and Aniruddha], Matsya and the other lila incarnations, the yuga-avataras, the manvantara incarnations and as many other incarnations as there are - all descend in the body of Lord Krsna. In this way the complete Supreme Godhead, Lord Krsna Himself, appears.”

And Srila Prabhupada also writes in (CC Adi 5.131-133): “When the Supreme Personality of Godhead Krsna appears, He is the shelter of all plenary parts. Thus at that time all His plenary portions join in Him.”

(Adi 5.132) “In whatever form one knows the Lord, one speaks of Him in that way. In this there is no falsity, since everything is possible in Krsna.”

PURPORT

“.... Therefore this matter may be difficult to understand. But the Gaudiya Vaisnava-sampradaya, headed by Rupa Gosvami, has established the principle of the Bhagavad-gita that everything emanates from Krsna, who says in the Bhagavad-gita, aham sarvasya prabhavah: "I am the original source of everything.Everything" includes Narayana. Therefore Rupa Gosvami, in his Laghu-bhagavatamrta, has established that Krsna, not Narayana, is the original Personality of Godhead.

In this connection he has quoted a verse from Srimad-Bhagavatam (3.2.15) that states:

sva-santa-rupesv itaraiu svarupair

abhyardyamanesv anukampitatma

paravareso mahad-amsa-yukto

hy ajo 'pi jato bhagavan yathagnih

"When pure devotees of the Lord like Vasudeva are greatly disturbed by dangerous demons like Kamsa, Lord Krsna joins with all His pastime expansions, such as the Lord of Vaikuntha, and, although unborn, becomes manifest, just as fire becomes manifest by the friction of arani wood." Arani wood is used to ignite a sacrificial fire without matches or any other flame. Just as fire appears from arani wood, the Supreme Lord appears when there is friction between devotees and nondevotees. When Krsna appears, He appears in full, including within Himself all His expansions like Narayana, Vasudeva, Sankarsana, Aniruddha and Pradyumna. Krsna is always integrated with His other incarnations, like Nrsimhadev, Varaha, Vamana, Nara-Narayana, Hayagriva and Ajita. In Vrndavana sometimes Lord Krsna exhibits the functions of such incarnations.

In the Brahmana Purana it is said: "The same Personality of Godhead who is known in Vaikuntha as the four-handed Narayana, the friend of all living entities, and in the milk ocean as the Lord of Svetadvipa, and who is the best of all puranas, appeared as the son of Nanda. In a fire there are many sparks of different dimensions; some of them are very big, and some are small. The small sparks are compared to the living entities, and the large sparks are compared to the Visnu expansions of Lord Krsna. All the incarnations emanate from Krsna, and after the end of their pastimes they again merge with Krsna."

Therefore in the various Puranas Krsna is described sometimes as Narayana, sometimes as Ksirodakasayi Visnu, sometimes as Garbhodakasayi Visnu and sometimes as Vaikunthanatha, the Lord of Vaikuntha. Because Krsna is always full, Mula-sankarsana is in Krsna, and since all incarnations are manifested from Mula-sankarsana, it should be understood that He can manifest different incarnations by His supreme will, even in the presence of Krsna. Great sages have therefore glorified the Lord by different names. Thus when the original person, the source of all incarnations, is sometimes described as an incarnation, there is no discrepancy.

(Adi 5.133) “Therefore Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu has exhibited to everyone all the pastimes of all the various incarnations.”

Thus Srila Prabhupada confirms that when Lord Caitanya appears in Kali Yuga, The Kalki Avatara appears, But Kalki Avatara appears within the body of Lord Caitanya because Lord Caitanya is Sri Krsna, full, complete, and the shelter of all plenary parts and incarnations. As for the statement by Payonidhi prabhu that, Srila “Narayana Maharaja and Mother Jadurani have many misconceptions about Kalki Avatara.” That statement is false. Srila Narayana Maharaja is an uttama adhikari pure devotee and has dedicated his life to propagating the holy names of the Lord. Jadurani dd is an advanced, very senior disciple of Srila Prabhupada. I pray that Payonidhi prabhu can find the necessary humility to ask for forgiveness for his false allegations. Payonidhi prabhu, Please forgive my harsh tone and any offences I have made to you.

Sincerely,

your servant,

Lokaguru das

Jai Sri Krsna Caitanya and Jai Kalki Avatara

Payonidhi prabhu has quoted many wonderful purports and lectures to support his contention that Kalki Avatara comes in every Kali yuga (Misconceptions about Kalki Avatara). The question is not whether Sri Kalki appears in this Kali yuga, but how He appears.

I'm not so sure about this. If you look at all the quotes presented by both Payonidhi and Lokaguru Prabhus from Srila Prabhupada's books, it appears that both viewpoints are given. 1) that Kaki avatara appears at the end of this Kali Yuga and 2) That he appears but only within the body of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu. This is one theological issue that doesn't appear to resolved in modern Gaudiya Vaisnavism. "The question is not whether Sri Kalki appears in this Kali yuga, but how He appears." All the incarnations or avatars of Krsna appear within Krsna, and Mahaprabhu is Krsna himself therefore all the incarnations appear within Him. Then what would be the point of Sukadeva Goswami telling that Kalki Avatara appears at the end of Kali Yuga? The answer I believe that Srila Narayana Maharaja has given is that it is in another kalpa. From the quotes given from Srila Prabhupada's books both conceptions could be called into question. Of course the safe path is to harmonize all these considerations. I'm sure this is beyond almost all of the Prabhupada Onlyites that Payonidhi seems to represent.

Good. Why not then just accept that and move on Why write a lengthy article for the internet claiming that someone else is wrong?

"Better to hear from Srila Prabhupada directly."

Good. Why not then just accept that and move on Why write a lengthy article for the internet claiming that someone else is wrong?

That's an interesting idea, but than you have to ask yourself why we are on "spiritiual discussions" since you have to admit that for the most part these discussions are fueled by controversy. Are we bored? At least in my case its true, since I'm like a bee on outside of the bottle of honey of Krsna Nama. Well anyway I guess if we have the propensity to fight then let's fight about Krsna, as Prabhupada recommended. Fight but avoid aparadhas, now that's not an easy task.

Coming Soon: Kalki-avatara

BY: BALAVIDYA DASA

Jan 19, USA (SUN) — We won't enquire from where Lokaguru dasa gets his distorted sense of logic and propensity to word jugglery, but their recent product, as posted recently on the Sampradaya Sun, certainly doesn't hold up against the plain statements of the ripened fruit of the desire tree of Vedic knowledge, the Srimad-Bhagavatam. Nowhere do we find in the Bhagavatam, the odd assertion that Kalki-avatara appears at any other time than the junction of Kali-yuga and Satya-yuga. Moreover, the odd idea that Kalki appeared within Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu five-hundred years ago and therefore will not appear at the end of this yuga is simply mistaken. One might as well say that Buddha did not really appear about twenty-six hundred years ago in this Kali-yuga-as described in the Bhagavatam-because he was to appear within the form of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu five-hundred years ago.

Certainly all the avataras are eternally present within the form of the Supreme Lord as He is Their ultimate source. However, when this Ultimate Supreme Lord appears in a yuga, this event does not preclude the individual appearances of the scheduled avataras for that same yuga - as we have just seen with Lord Buddha in this Kali-yuga. Similarly, Kalki-avatara will certainly appear at the end of this Kali-yuga.

Of course, if Lokaguru dasa does not accept the plain statement of the Bhagavatam as below, then he is welcome to wait for about six-thousand lifetimes and see for himself - after all, Kalki-avatara's birth-address and father's name is given. However, he should carefully consider this course of action because the Vedic definition of an atheist is "one who does not accept the Vedic sastra" and Kalki has a striking way of dealing with atheists.

Srimad-Bhagavatam 1.3.25:

TEXT

Thereafter, at the conjunction of two yugas, the Lord of the Creation will take His birth as the Kalki incarnation and become the son of Visnu Yasa. At this time, the rulers of the earth will have degenerated into plunderers.

PURPORT

Here is another foretelling of the advent of Lord Kalki, the incarnation of Godhead. That is the authority of Srimad-Bhagavatam.

Srimad-Bhagavatam 4.22.36: PURPORT

At the end of this Kali-yuga, the Lord will appear as the incarnation of Kalki, and His only business will be to kill all human beings on the surface of the globe. After that killing, another golden age will begin.

Srimad-Bhagavatam 9.15.33: PURPORT

This is only the beginning of Kali-yuga, but at the end of Kali-yuga the entire population will consist of mlecchas because no one will follow the Vedic principles. At that time the incarnation Kalki will appear. Mleccha-nivaha-nidhane kalayasi kara-balam. He will kill all the mlecchas indiscriminately with his sword.

We hope this is found helpful,

Your servant,

Balavidya dasa

Srila Prabhupada is presenting his realizations about the future appearance of Lord Kalki, and Narayana Maharaja presents his own. Each set of these realizations is valuable and carries weight (guru).

Why do people insist on some sort of just one possible vision applicable to all, at all times? Perhaps because they want to see their guru's statements in a mechanically absolute terms. But the reality is not mechanical, especially when it comes to the future appearance of the Lord. Do you think there is only one way He can appear even when predicted in the shastra? Do you think the "future" cannot change? The precise details of each Avatar's appearance are quite changeable and depend on requirements of the moment.

For some reason, I was struck with wonder as the books came rolling off the press. As I joyously read the new editions of Sri Chaitanya Charitamrta, as a brahmacari vaisya, I was most attracted at how Krsna Katha players appeared to take part in Lord Chaitanya's Samkirtana Movement. I was always so blissed as I read Srila Prabhupada's citations from Gaura Ganodesa Dapika.

In the content of these wonderful purports, there are also wonderful controversies (not unlike this Lord Kalki issue) where differing, yet authoritive, versions were displayed. The main one, and I forget the details and do not remember the volume and verse, was who Sri Prahlada Maharaja appeared as. Gaura Ganodesa Dapika states a certain thing, yet a great Vaisnava Acarya (Srila Bilvamangala Thakura, I believe, but I may be quite wrong) did not accept this version. There is also differing points about Sri Adwaita, being Mahavisnu, yet some suggest he is Lord Siva.

This is transcendental controversy, not at all like our silly arguements on this mundane level. All incongruencies are solved, all contradictions remedied, by the Supreme Lord. No wars break out because of these differing opinions, and the vaisnavas take great pleasure at this "disagreement" pastime of the eternal dearmost associates of the Supreme Lord. I have gotton over the differing ideas presented to the students of the Vaisnava Acaryas, because the differences have no bearing on the unity in purpose of the empowered representatives of Lord Nityananda Prabhu.

The Kalki issue is not really of any consequence to the present vaisnava community. Srila Prabhupada clearly said this because he expects us to all be well "back home" by then. Kalki comes when the world is in a truely gruesome state, when God's name cannot even be uttered, when humankind is reduced to the lowest intellect that is greatly surpassed even by today's domestic animals. Kalki's sword will sever heads that wont even know the pain, because their very lives are far more painful that decapitation.

My only question is that if Kalki does not come, how do those consumed by the fire of partial annihilation re-appear in Satya Yuga, the beginning of the next cycle. Kalki purges the planet, and those with any iota of a portion of even one vaisnava quality are taken back home, back to Godhead, and the rest are sent to non-existance, like they were never.

And if Krsna breaks his schedule, he can do that, he is not beholding to our ideas of where he can go or not go. Call it Divine Prerogative. In the same vein as transcendental controversy.

Hare Krsna, ys in cooperation, mahaksadasa
