Question by Chris Devol cvdevol at wrote:

Is there a fixed number of individual souls in existence?

If not, then that means new souls are being created. But if they are being created, then they are not beginningless, which is contrary to the Vedic teaching.

But if there is a fixed number of souls, then since the souls are supposed to be beginningless, and the material universes are supposed to have been created and destroyed over and over again from eternity past, then how come ALL the souls haven't gone back to Godhead by now, leaving the material universes empty of life?

It would seem that there must be a large number of souls who never ever, go back to Godhead, but remain eternally conditioned.

But, subtracting the number of eternally conditioned souls, that still leaves only a fixed number of souls who are capable of going back to Godhead, and the question remains, why haven't they all gone back by now, since they have had eternity to do so? And since the Vedas say that they never return to the material world, then there should be

nobody left in the material universes except those who can never go back to Godhead!

Does Krishna have to follow the dictates of your material mind and senses.

The Lord is inconcieveable. And so are His energies

It's a good question. You can just remain silent if you don't know the answers rather than divert and manipulate the questions.

The guest was just asking for other's intricate reasoning.

This is based on the faulty premise that new souls are not entering the material realm from the spiritual realm (Brahma jyothi/Viraja/Vaikuntha) and that the number of souls in existence is limited. New souls are visiting, old souls are going back home back to Godhead all the time. There are unlimited souls in existence (spiritual and material existence together). 99.9% of all souls are in the spiritual realm.

Unlimited means unlimited, not 1,000, nor 10,000, nor 100 trillion.

how did you work out the 99.9% of unlimited Souls?

I suppose an old soul would be someone who has had many spiritual lifetimes as a human whereas a new soul is someone who just recently got a human birth from one of the lower kingdoms? I don't know just a guess on my part. Technically all souls are ageless aren't they?

how did you work out the 99.9% of unlimited Souls?

•••it is a metaphor

Is there a fixed number of individual souls in existence?

•••no, souls are parts and parcels of god... god is unlimited, souls are in unlimited number

If not, then that means new souls are being created.

••no why? there's no creation.. there's emanation, soul is eternal.. no beginning, no end

It would seem that there must be a large number of souls who never ever, go back to Godhead, but remain eternally conditioned

•••large number but little in comparison to the infinite number of the existing souls

why haven't they all gone back by now, since they have had eternity to do so?

•••freedom.. they (we) are free to remain here suffering

I suppose, you mean, not all of these 99.9% souls are in Vaikuntha, but spiritual planes, other than material planes like earth. Am I right?

The souls in the material world are infinite. According to mathematics, 0.01% of infinity is also infinity. So if a finite number of souls go back to Godhead, you will need infinite years for all the souls to be liberated. Even if you were to say that infinite souls are liberated still you cannot say that the material worlds will be empty because infinity minus infinity is indeterminate. The answer is not zero you see!
