The robbery scene at Heathrow.

Robbers escape with more than $12m in Heathrow heist

Police in the UK say robbers have escaped with $12.78 million worth of currencies in a raid at London's Heathrow Airport after an inbound flight from Bahrain.

The raiders struck in a secure area near a cargo bay at Heathrow's terminal four shortly before 5:30pm (AEDT) yesterday afternoon.

Police say the money had arrived earlier on a British Airways (BA) flight from Bahrain, but could not specify how much was in dollars and what other currencies were involved.

A spokeswoman said two robbers approached the driver of a security van that was transporting the cash, forced him to the ground and tied his hands.

They then transferred the money from the BA security vehicle to another van with BA markings, which was later found burnt out not far from the airport with no trace of the cash or suspects.

"At this very early stage, the police are trying to establish the exact circumstances of the robbery, no firearms were seen," the spokeswoman said.

The security van driver was taken to a west London hospital suffering shock and injuries to his wrists.

Police did not reveal how the offenders had gained access to the secure area.

The raid bears similarities to the November 1983 Brink's-Mat heist at Heathrow, which remains Britain's biggest ever robbery.

A gang seized a haul of gold bullion from Brink's-Mat's bullion warehouse, escaping with 6,800 ingots and an assortment of travellers cheques and diamonds worth a total of $72.45 million.

It appears the robbers had inside information.
