Gauracandra
I find this kind of funny. Both the burning and the protesting. The only time book burning should be a concern is when it is government sponsored. If an individual citizen decides to burn a book thats his free speech, and I see nothing wrong with it. It may be stupid free speech, but so are most protests anyways. Citing witchcraft theme, New Mexico church burns Harry Potter books December 31, 2001 Posted: 8:38 AM EST (1338 GMT) ALAMOGORDO, New Mexico (AP) -- As hundreds protested nearby, a church group burned Harry Potter and other books. Jack Brock, the Christ Community Church founder and pastor, said the books burned Sunday were "a masterpiece of satanic deception." "These books teach children how they can get into witchcraft and become a witch, wizard or warlock," Brock said. Members sang "Amazing Grace" as they threw Potter books, plus some other books and magazines, into the fire. Across the street, protesters chanting "Stop burning books" stretched in a line a quarter of a mile long. "It may be useless but we want (the church) to know the community is not behind them," said Joann Booth, who protested with her four grandchildren. One protester dressed up as Adolf Hitler. Brock told the congregation that he viewed the attention the church received as a blessing. "There are those that are doing their best to make us look bad." Brock said. "But because of this, I've been able to preach the gospel around the world." A letter to the Alamogordo Daily News inviting the community to attend the fire sparked debate in the town of 36,000. On Tuesday, protesters held signs reading "Book burning? Shame on our town" in front of the public library. Inside was a display highlighting the books. gHari
Funny, today I was just thinking how Harry Potter had done so much for the literacy of kids all over the world. They will be able to read Prabhupada's books when they get older and develop real powers like Hari's. This Footloose screwloose church guy is so proud of preaching the gospel all over the world, when in fact he is only painting a ridiculous image of his religion. It's almost as bad as the muslims trying to force Islam on the infidels with the threat of death. Talk about alienating the world. Duh. Hippy New Year, folks - happy no new terror Hey, where is everybody?<font color="#f7f7f7"> [This message has been edited by gHari (edited 12-31-2001).]
Tarun
Suppose Potter Witchcraft is tamogun religion. Suppose this Church is rajoguN or even sattvaguN religion. Can book burning prevent tamoguN? If so, why VedavyAs wrote 6 PurANas in each mode, including tamas? Isn't it better we acknowledge, study, comprehend all 3 modes? Not that we have to become deeply involved in rajas & tamas. But can fire destroy that which is subtler than fire? Are they burning paper & ink? Can desires, ideas, urges be burnt?
