In hindu religion women are not allowed divorce & remarriage.Remarriage is not permitted to a widow but a man can marry again if his wife dies.Is there any religious basis for this? The only refernce to such a canonic law I could find was in Mahabharata. Any views on this inhuman & unequal practice.

References for such a law?

Let us not argue if the vedic law permits or not. Because it is not only in Hinduism but the Muslims and Christians too have such ristrictions. May be you have not read their orthodox canon. Times have changed and Hinduism have gone through two to three hundred centuries of evolution. Hindus of the present are not so rigid with religious laws.

That is why we Hindus can adopt with time and live along side side with with other faiths. If it was in vedic period, non Hindus would not be permited into a Hindu home or take a drink from a non Hindu. We do not see such in the present time because we are more tolerant with others. The Hindu scriptures have divine laws for the betterment of the society of that period. Every word in the Vedic scriptures have a valid meaning and reason otherwise the sages would not have put it there just for fun. They were given these divine laws by the Supreme Being and for the benefit of the society the sages put it in writing for all to benefit. It was so in that period of time. But after some few hundred centuries divine saints had came to revieve the old laws and they were more tolerant and acceptable by most but as usual there were some who rejected such changes.

We do not critize or mock the old ways but changes has to take place for the good of the society. If a woman cannot live with a slave driver husband than she should be given the option to divorce him and vice versa. So is a widow who cannot live alone without a companion of a male in this cruel world flooded with rapist and murderers. Whatever happens it happens for good and by the will of GOD.

Swami Vivekananda once said that a religion which cannot wipe tears of a widow and destitute woman cannot be my religion.

Every widow has legal right to get married. Scriptures were written thousands of years before when women were dependent upon men and socio economic situation was different.

One should ask question to to oneself that if own sister is widowed due to some reason then what would be his suggestion. Wouldn't he wan't his sister to get married?

Similarly, if a women is married to an asura, a drunkard, drug addict, or a criminal by fraudulent means then ofcourse she has a right to divorce. Doesn't matter what scriptures say. May be when scriptures were written every man was a holy saint. But in kaliyuga it is difficult to distinguish between some men and beast.

If a man can remarry so can a woman. Soul is same in a man or a woman.

Hinduism so far is not a organized religion.

there is no one to enforce anything.

the practice of dharma is voluntary.

trasitions and customes develop as solutions to problems.

they are changed as time requires.

if a widow chooses to not marry then it is her freedom to choose so.

try to elarn the see teh vedic culture frome the view point of the vedic people, nto from the view point of the ant- vedic people.

what prompted you to know this?

are you considering accepting hinduism and worried that if you become a widow, then you will have hard tiome to re-marry?

hinduism more than a religion is a way of life.It is not a rule book with given standards. It is a practice, not like other religions with orthodox rules and regulations. So we should be glad and apprecaite that our religion is flexible enough and is not like a punishment to follow unlike other religions where you need to pray compusorily 5 times a day and have to do things to prove your loyalty to your religion. So learn to respect and value what you have

I would also like to add that we should not forget that it was only in our religion that girls were given the right to choose their own husband(swayamvara)which is something very very modern and broad minded.
