maadhav 0 Report post Posted September 3, 2005 all have not the same ability to understand scripture(s). hence a guru is need to guide/interpret. personally one may choose to live by any scripture, vyasadev did not write purnas for nothing. he had a purpose. the last and best purana he wrote is srimad bhagvatam. no vaishanv aacharya has said to dump it. to dump bhagavtam is to dump vaishnavism, bhakti yoga. Guest guest Report post Posted September 4, 2005 As a whole the Puranas themselves have caused alot of sectarian problems amongst Hindus. It is in the category of smriti, which means it is subordinate to the shrutis. I also find the stories in the Puranas very hard to believe, even if I try. I would agree that we need proper gurus to interpret the puranas but I still think more emphisis should be placed on the Shrutis. If people want the puranas they can have them, but I myself cannot believe in them literally.
