Rudra and Siva

it is widely thought that Siva and Rudra are the same.

I found the following in "Autobiography of a YOGI" by Yogi Paramahamsa Yogananda:

===================================

THE LORD IN HIS ASPECT AS SHIVA

Not a historical personage like Krishna, Shiva is the name given to God in the last aspect of His threefold nature (Creator-Preserver-Destroyer). Shiva, the Annihilator of maya or delusion, is symbolically represented in the scriptures as the Lord of Renunciates, the King of Yogis. In Hindu art He is always shown with the new moon in His hair, and wearing a garland of hooded snakes, ancient emblem of evil overcome and perfect wisdom. The "single" eye of omniscience is open on His forehead.

===============================================

now rudra refers to the destroyer.siva cant be only a destroyer entity of god as we see from the above quote.

does this mean that siva himself acts as brahma,vishnu and rudra?

Hindu trinity is no foundation of sanathana dharma. It's symbolic alright for others understanding.

Paramhamsa yogananda is a great vedic, if speaking of yoga & veda in the american universities & churches is considered the ultimate. Well, to me it also meant that he worked well with the federal and the christian community in the US.

I've wanted to know about the 11 Rudras too. What do they mean by 11 Rudras. I thought Rudra was that aspect of God that represented destruction.

Let's remember that Brahma, Visnu and Shiva are three manifestations of God as creator, preserver and destroyer.

vaishnavas consider siva a mahavaishnav.

when rama was to be borm, shiva had come in disguise to see Him.

siva worshipers' sadhana is that of advaita,

this is different from vaishnav sadhana, dwaita -bhakti.

both arew vedic paths, but one cannot walk on bith at the same time.

your purana link is full of mythical stories surely man-made.all people are not too stupid to be amused by such fairytales even if they came from day-time fantasies of ancient sages.

you said:

"...Only bigots will keep fighting on who is superior. First pray at the Lord's feet. Once the feet is visible you can look up and see if he is wearing bhasma or pundarika..."

yes! it is true.

Those who are fighting are not only bigots but fools also.

first we have to verify the trueness of these stories.then only we can conclude that these characters really exist.

in gita krishna says: rudrANAm shankaraschAsmi

"of rudras, I am Shankara (Siva)".

-------------

Krishna said this at the posit. of mahatman. It's said that rudra is a vedic god & Siva is a dravidian god.

there are supposedly 11 rudras of whom Shiva is the greatest. rudra was also considered the lord of the beasts and the wilderness, described as a wildman. at one point there was probably a bit of confusion as to whether he overtook indras role as god of lightning. there appears to be no differentiation between the 11 rudras and the 1 shiva that ive ever seen. but throughout the course of the progression of hinduism, his attributes grew to include god of fertility, killer of ignorance, and metaphorically, the dissilusioner and instigator of the recreatoin of the universe. this just goes to show the old dravidian thoughts and how they melded into aryan thought.

How can a egoistic person lke this can be taught anything.

None of our sages and saints from alwars, Ramanuja, Madhva, Raghvendraswamy, Namdev, Jayadev thought like this. They confirmed Puranas as long as they affirm Sruti.

This idiot called mudamoorthy thinks he knows more and therefore wants to sit in his ignorance. Let the dog bark.
