7. The art of navigation was born in the river Sindh 5000 years ago. The very word "Navigation" is derived from the Sanskrit word NAVGATIH.

8. The value of pi was first calculated by Budhayana, and he explained the concept of what is now known as the Pythagorean Theorem. British scholars have last year (1999) officially published that Budhayan's works date back to the 6th Century, which is long before the European mathematicians.

9. Algebra, trigonometry and calculus came from India. Quadratic equations were by Sridharacharya in the 11th Century; the largest numbers the Greeks and the Romans used were 106 whereas Indians used numbers as big as 1053.

10. According to the Gemological Institute of America, up until 1896, India was the only source of diamonds to the world.

18.Karate was founded by Bodhidharma, an Indian Buddhist monk.

19. Martin Kuther King father of US civil rights movement was inspired by Mahatma Gandhi.

To elaborate on these points:

A similar article to the one above was originally sent into the Indian Express newspaper, June 22, 1999, by Maxwell Pareira, and reproduced in the Annual Research Journal - 2000, by the Institute for Rewriting Indian (and World) History, which follows.

Some may dispute the facts, like, "India never invaded any country in the last 10,000 years of her history." But when many cultures were nomadic forest dwellers over 5,000 years ago, India established the Harappan culture in the Indus Valley. The world's first university, established in Takshila in 700 BC, had 10,500 students from all over the world studying more than 60 subjects. The large university at Nalanda, dating from the 4th century BC, is acknowledged as one of the greatest achievements of ancient India in the field of education. And Sanskrit, through Latin, is accepted as the mother of all European languages. A 1987 report in Forbes magazine said Sanskrit was the most suitable language for computer software.

India contributed to the number system by the numeral 0, innovated by Aryabhatta. Algebra, trigonometry, and calculus originated in India. The quadratic equation was solved by Sridharacharya in the 11th century. The Greeks and Romans contented themselves with rather small numbers, while Hindus (the then inhabitants of the land of Sapta-Sindhu) used units as big as 10 raised to the power of 53 with specific names as early as 5,000 BC, during the Vedic period. Today, the largest unit in use is tera, or 10 to the power of 12.

The solar year was calculated as 365.25875684 days by Bhaskaracharya in the 5th century, hundreds of years before the astronomer Smart. The value of pi was first calculated by Bodhayana, who also discovered the Pythagorean Theorem in the 6th century, long before the European mathematicians. The place value system and the decimal system were developed in India in 100 BC. [Further research has placed the dates mentioned in this paragraph as actually being much earlier for some of these inventions, as explained in Proof of Vedic Culture's Global Existence.]

Ayurveda is the oldest school of medicine codified by Charaka 2,500 years ago. Sushruta, the father of surgery, conducted complicated procedures dealing with cataracts, artificial limbs, fractures, urinary stones, plastic surgery, caesarean section and brain surgery 2,600 years ago. Over 125 surgical instruments were in use. The use of anesthesia was also known in ancient India.

A century-old suspicion that the pioneer of wireless communication was Prof. Jagadish Bose and not Marconi now stands proven. And Nature has reported that a Danish physicist and his team in the US have slowed down light from the speed of 300,000 km per second to 71 km per hour, using the Bose Einstein Condensate to stall it in its path. And the forensic use of fingerprints was discovered and developed in Calcutta.

The art of navigation was born in the river Sindh 6,000 years ago. The very word "navigation" is derived from the Sanskrit naugatih. Although modern images of India show poverty and underdevelopment, it was the richest country on earth until the arrival of the British. Christopher Columbus was attracted by India's wealth. According to the Gemological Institute of America, until 1896 India was the world's only source of diamonds. Furthermore, the earliest dam for irrigation was built in Saurashta. According to the Saka King Rudradaman I, a beautiful lake called Sudarshana was constructed on the hills of Raivataka in Chandragupta Maurya's time.

In regard to games, there is no doubt that the game of chess is an Indian invention in the form of Shatranj or Astha .. Polo originated in Manipur. The first man on Everest was Tenzing Norgay, not Sir Edmond Hillary.

Some additional facts about India are the following:

Too bad none of the people you mentioned are living in India anymore ? If they all stayed in India and contributed that work, India would be the super power country, But the Americans are smarter so they carefully brought the good ones there.

With all that said, we still have the worst, selfish, selfcentered, ignorant, greedy, no good Politicians stealing the poors money and making the country worse.

You have a point but we have to remember India's ascent is not and will not depend upon the corrupt, docile, crooked, selfish politicians or anglicized Indians or self deprecating brain washed and mercenary minded so called educated Indians. Its ascent will come from the power of truth and karmas. WHo would have thought 10 years back that India will be sitting on a reserve of $ 150 billlions, at that time India was almost bankrupt. In the churning process that is taking place the scum will get cleared automatically. If the time has come no power on the earth can stop it. Just like nobody can avoid death whether somebody has $1000 billions or 1000 nuclear weapons.

The injustice done to India will come back to the perpetrators and SPrabhupada said nobody can escape karmas... it is the law of mother nature as ShriKrishna said in Bhagavada Gita....

Sorry if I may sound a bit utopian!

all the facts are true, and the world will soon acknowledge and see India rise above all. The end is not far for all the petty politicians who have been languishing and the country will see a new begining, slowly, but surely.

Re

(I see no hope for India AT all.)

Where there is life there is always a hope, India has much more to offer then getting rich.

Only India and the wisdom contain in it can guide the world which is heading towards its own distruction.

Re

( All I see is corruption and indifference.)

this is very sad, only education can stop this, but i have seen the change, every time i go to India there is less of it.

Re

( Also the fact that we are now a nation of one billion is discomforting to say the least. The quality of life

is extremely poor.)

there is room for everyone, quality of life has improved leaps and bounds in the last ten years.

even in the hardship i see people genarly very happy, they have time on their hand but in the west there is no time for anything.

You have to make a choice!

If you are a Hindu in India, leave India to a foreign country and convert in to a catholic.

It you are already living in the west, just forget India and enjoy your life.

You are part of the anglicized/self deprecatory brigade who can only criticize India.

If you are an Indian, you should ask what you have done for the country other than perhaps born in a free India and enjoying your life...remember India was a colony for 800 years...first by musslims who destroyed mmuch of the fabric and then britts...who are rich today because India is poor today.

If you are a Hindu, you could have been a musslim as in Egypt or Persia or you could have been a mixed anglo-Indian as it happened in LAtin America...

It is very easy to criticize because you were born in a free country.

If you are neither an Indian or a Hindu living in India or have any love for India...just buzz off and get lost!

Dont say that GP. I live here. Here corruption has become so rampant that it does not evoke any reaction at all. What wisdom are you talking about. India has nothing to offer now.

I agree that India was a great country ,but that was a thousands of years back. Dont live in the past. Here people

are crazy. They take to the streets to protest non-issues .

My favorites are the Americans ,they dont slog and slog like

Indians. Indians are such geeks who earn a lot but dont spend a penny. All they do is hoard and hoard . Hey,if you want to look at jolly fun loving people my favs are the Latin americans .Look ate all their festivals, so full of vigour and pulsating with energy. They also greet everyone with a warm hug ,though many of them live below the poverty line. They are the real heroes!!!!

You are not a genuine Indian. Even though India has many problems, every true Indian still consider it as amotherland. And you don't discuss your mother's looks with others. A mother is a mother.

The very fact that you don't even know the meaning of Indian greeting which means not hugging and exchanging each other germs and bacterias. You will even better like eastern European greeting where men kiss each other.

In Indian stile we do namste which means I bow before the God which also resides in you. That is vedic greeting not hugging/kissing/squeezing palms.

You are a lost case!

People its not just the politicians, But the general population has become selfish and arrogant. Just the other day i went to a mall and i just paused for 10 mins and looked at whats going onn around us and the how the people are behaving. Its seems that everybody is out to get something, there is no peace in their faces, There all rushing, I was over a clothing section and people come in push me, they bud in and grab what they want without giving any regards to who is standing, to them iam like invicible. I have seen this behaviour every where, But you look at a western country like, Swiss, Norway, U.S, Canada etc, you will know how far we are behind. There was one person in this forum who was saying that this also due to the fact that most of us are not educated, But these problems are due to Selfishness. The people ruining the country are selfish and the people who have the power to stop them but not doing so are Selfish too since they care too much of their wellbeing.

Look at all the poor people, forrget the government But is there any private organization helping them, You go to any foriegn country you will see plenty of Private Organization (Blue Cross, UNICEF, UNITED WAY, SALVATION ARMY, tons more)

ENOUGH SAID!

please stop all this comparision....there are good and bad in both east and west.....in india we stay so we can see what is happening, while we only have the media view of the west or while taking a few trips, which naturally is to the better parts of wests.......

If people in US are so well and understanding, why is their divorce rate more than any other country, why is one of every three US citizen considered to have a psychological problem, why do students go on shooting spree in the schools, why do the US attack other countries....and from where do you think they have built all these big and clean cities, it is from the poor nations, they have taken all the wealth and dumped in their country by cheating and stealing.....as to the latin americans countries, theirs is the biggest corrupted governments and are the biggest drug abusers in the world....so don't be fooled by the media, do some research and then comment.

Mr Jayan:

"while we only have the media view of the west or while taking a few trips" - I guess you havnt been to any western countries. Do you know that if you are poor in U.S, Canada, France, Swiss etc, that you are eligible to recieve Social Assistance, plus a apartment without rent, New clothes every 6 motnhs, free furnitures, these are all facilitated to the poor by the Govenrment. India can do this But the stupid ignorant greedy politicians are taking it. I guess you only have the medias view.

"If people in US are so well and understanding, why is their divorce rate more than any other country" - Buddy have you heard of the term "freedom of choice", In western countries women have far more rights than women in india. Most women in india are house wife so there are financially dependent on their husbands, in western countries most women are indipendent. Therefore when a husband abuses them they can can get out of the marriage. In india husbands burn them, then theres the in laws. Even if a women divorces in india then there is the society who is going to label her, then other married women wont invite them to their house. But in western country its not like that. Mr. Jayan you truly cant understand our women, what most of them are going through everyday.

"why is one of every three US citizen considered to have a psychological problem, why do students go on shooting spree in the schools" - Life iteself is stressful in western country due to most people just go to work come home eat, sleep, then wake up go to work, it keeps hapenning until they just snap. People dont spend time do something that relaxes the mind and body, Student go on shooting spree because parents dont spend time with their kids, kids who dont have friends etc. The other reasons is U.S second ammendment states that Citizens have a right to own firearms, thus every household has guns, So kids can easily access guns, They are kids not adults to think wise. If kids can access firearms in india you will see more of that here aswell. But this all has nothing to do with how the country functions. These are all individual acts, not like the whole population is behaving that way. We are discussing about the Governments and People, There will always be anomalies in proper functioning of a good society.

"why do the US attack other countries....and from where do you think they have built all these big and clean cities, it is from the poor nations" - We are discussing about how the country and the people function within themselves, you need to discuss about this in a different forum. We are comparing about what other countries are doing for their people and people in return doing for their countries and genarosity. U.S has lost a lot of money attacking other countries you fool, they attacked countries that posses as threat to U.S., Further more you are only comparing U.S policies, But take a look at other countries like Sweden, Swiszterland, Norway, Canada, England, Germany, Australia (all the first world countries), My post earlier was based on all of them, Not U.S. only.

"it is from the poor nations, they have taken all the wealth and dumped in their country by cheating and stealing" - How can poor nation have wealth that can be stolen by U.S, arnt you contradicting youself ? Name a few countries that the U.S stole from, U.S economy is in their Business, Technology, and Military Sector. Not stealing!

"as to the latin americans countries, theirs is the biggest corrupted governments and are the biggest drug abusers in the world" - Latin america is sill considered a third world country, they need a lot of help!

"don't be fooled by the media, do some research and then comment." - Do your research and post, dont post nusance replies that has no logical senses, except for the true purpose to argue only! You must get out of your home and look around!

You seem to be very clever, so you have visited all these so called rich countries...

----------------

"Buddy have you heard of the term "freedom of choice", In western countries women have far more rights than women in india. Most women in india are house wife so there are financially dependent on their husbands, in western countries most women are indipendent. Therefore when a husband abuses them they can can get out of the marriage."

Oh yeah, so after how many marriages in US do they stop divorcing????. If they are understanding, why don't they chose the best person at the first time itself? The problem is that you have freedom of choice in US but no cultural background to make the correct choice. You don't have a sound mind, because if you can't tackle a problem in one marriage, you can never do it even if you do hundreds of marriages. True, in India there are atrocities on women, so also in other countries, is not women ill-treated in US, why do you have women organisation working for it then in the US? If every men and women starts divorcing, how will a family survive? If your family life is shattered due to some misunderstanding how can you live a sane life, thats the reason most of the people, including children, in US and Europe are having trouble psychologically. Education and self-reliance doesn't mean you forget the importance of forgiveness, giving a chance to your partner to come clean, take care of the family, think of the affect it would have on its children psyche and their future.....these qualities are passed on from generations, having good cultural background....A recent study suggested that most of the American divorcees seek their future partner from Asia (Indians and Chinese being prominent), because they feel they can understand the values of family and its importance on one's life.

Family, is the base, it comes first, then society and then the nation.....You people don't have the guts to face the situation and try to run away...and one of the means to that is divorce.

-----

"U.S has lost a lot of money attacking other countries you fool, they attacked countries that posses as threat to U.S., Further more you are only comparing U.S policies, But take a look at other countries like Sweden, Swiszterland, Norway, Canada, England, Germany, Australia (all the first world countries), My post earlier was based on all of them, Not U.S. only."

Why are you so infuriated my dear, this is only a discussion forum not a boxing ring???? Calm down....

If the US has spent so much, they are not foolish, they have means to recover 10 times much than they spent. You seem to be very much impressed by what is preached by the US government to the media and people. If they had lost so much money, the government would have gone bankrupt, but the US budget is always surplus, how come that??? (don't tell me due to good governance..blah blah). They have the control of all the oil making countries. Iraq, they have captured. While in Saudi & Kuwait they get all the oils in return for their help in saving them in the Gulf War in the 90s. (I was in gulf so and know how much US has its hold on these countries' governance). When the world was requesting funds for development of poor nations in Africa like Sudan suffering from acute famine, this year, the US pressed the UN to release money it had spend on war in Iraq...(reason for war was to recover weapons of mass destruction and save the world), while the actual fact is to use their own weapons manufactured and lying idle at their end, and then recover the money spent from the UN.....What a great nation. During the Tsunami, the US aid was initially the lowest among all, even lower than developing countries.....when the world booed on it, they raised the aid amount.

Speaking of other so called developed countries, from where did UK develop - it is from ruling India and the african countries and taking all their wealth. Yes Sweden & Switzerland are well developed countries, grown on their own.

India too is a developing country!

I the point i was trying to bring out is that why is India internally corrupt ? My family came to the U.S in 1984, U.S gave us a chance to educate ourself, find a post thats suitable for our education, ability to live a healthy life etc. We couldnt get all these in India, the harder we tried the harder every steps is, My siblings had high grades yet to get into post secondary in India they have to pay money, to get a decent job you have to pay money. When we came to U.S we got what we deserved, The smarter we are in schools we got scolarships, the harder we work at workplace we got rewarded, Now we are Citizens of U.S., Therefore when people talks disrespect to U.S, I get a little upset. What i wrote about India is basically the truth, there is not point denying that, you can see that everyday.

"You don't have a sound mind, because if you can't tackle a problem in one marriage, you can never do it even if you do hundreds of marriages. True, in India there are atrocities on women, so also in other countries, is not women ill-treated in US, why do you have women organisation working for it then in the US? If every men and women starts divorcing, how will a family survive? " - This has nothing to do with the corruption of a country internally, These are personal choices that are not harmful to the poor or people of the country. Women organization are there in western countries to prevent abuse against women, not because there is too much abuse. Even in a country where there is high divorce the country itself is staying united, But isnt a shame for us indians who have unity among families But corruption nationwide.

"Family, is the base, it comes first, then society and then the nation.....You people don't have the guts to face the situation and try to run away...and one of the means to that is divorce." - You have it in wrong order, first comes Nation, then the society and finally family. Beause if the nation is doing well and not selfcentered and corrupt, then the society will doo good, if society is doing well, then families are doing good. Because the nation is the Super Set, and the Society is a subset, and families are subsets within subsets. Therefore if the superset is doing good, obviously the subsets has to be doing good. But if we take you case, "family first" then each family is doing good but not as a whole scociety because every family is only worried about themselves, thus resulting in conlfict with others. This is the main mistake in india we are all making, because every individual only thinks about his family first. Even the corrupt politicians are doing the same thing, example using the Governments (Peoples) money to pay for a lavish wedding of their kids, buying expensive cars, bangalow etc. Because family comes first for these people. Americans are the most patriotic people in the world, they would die for thier country, Thats why the country internally is properly functioning good, they are able to facilitate the needy. I love india, i always donate money to the underpriviliged and the orphans archarams. But thats all the best i can do in my power. If every indian can do something small but benificial to someone else in the country, thats a small spark thats needed to start the big flame.

Finally my main point is that eventhough most of us has studied and understood Gita, and the puranas and vedas. Even all these were origined in india, and comparing it to countries like U.S, and other western countries who eats meat, divorces, have little faith in God. We are far superior in knowledge of Dharma, But why do we have a corrupt country ? And why are they not corrupt ? Why are the poor getting poorer and the rich getting richer ? Did you see the generousity of the western countries when the Tsunami hit South Asia ? Since you are in india, certain things you cannot understand because you are within india, you have to step out of the circle to see the whole circle.

I agree with you completely. What makes USA an attractive destination is that people are straightforward, disciplined

civic minded and have a positive attitude, apart from having a fun loving attitude. They live life for the day and dont worry much about tommorow.I hope that my estimate is correct

Human rights are respected in the US unlike India where common citizens are treated like DIRT by every bureaucrat who thinks it is his birthright to treat people who are less fortunate in a shabby manner. Indians are corrupted by power, and that explains the sorry situation we find ourselves in. People no longer respect each other. Indians

have definitely degenerated a lot when compared to the Vedic period, sometimes it is hard to believe that these epics were written in India!!!

You are sadly mistaken .Bala is correct. Women and men have a choice and that means freedom to break away from a bad marriage. I have seen both men and women suffer just in order to make their marriage work. Sometimes they fight a losing battle. Of course India too has its rich customs and traditions ,but very little freedom of choice. Indian socirey happens to be narrow minded and stupid at times,to the point of being nauseatingly orthodox and cruel.

Reply to Jeyan008:

" Oh yeah, so after how many marriages in US do they stop divorcing????. If they are understanding, why don't they chose the best person at the first time itself? The problem is that you have freedom of choice in US but no cultural background to make the correct choice. You don't have a sound mind, because if you can't tackle a problem in one marriage, you can never do it even if you do hundreds of marriage"

During the Mahabharata Era, men used to have multiple wives, This is one reason to get out of a marriage without divorce. The husband would spend more time with the wife he loves the most. But now in india women are forced to keep the marriage healthy. But nowerdays more and more women are getting educated and working, slowly the divorce rates are rising. But it will be a good idea if there are nationally recognized feminist organization in india. Our women needs that!

O Yeah! Is section 498 of CRPC is not enough for women of India. The law which was created to protect illierate women from being thrown out is being blatantly abused by educated/working/egoistic women to harass groom's family. They think they have a licence to squeeze ln-laws.

The whole family life is getting destroyed by one master stroke of anti Hindu politicians. Since the society is reducing the divroce barriers, women behind the garb of feminism and taking advantage of loophoples in law are harassing men.

Where in Mahabharat men had four wifes? don't generalize based on one or two examples of Kings.

Men and Women have to realize that there will never be a perfect partner. You can divorce 1/2/3/4/ still you will not be happy. In USA people know that marriage may or may not last, divorce is a fair possibily that's why not much noise is made over it and people get over it.

Every body in India knows these days what happens if a wife complians.
