An avatar is manifestation of the Supreme Brahman. If we accept that theory than Jesus was an avatar. Sai Baba could be taken as an avatar or a person with special divine powers. Srila Prahupada was an ordinary human being had a life of a family man being married and giving up that life to follow his guru and started a new life as preacher of Gita as per his interpretation. Nothing more than the late Krubanantha Variar who was preaching the gospel of Lord Murugan [skanda Purana]

an avatar.. having personal characteristics, is a manifestation ofbhagavan/vishnu/krishna the personal aspect of the absolute, not of brahman

avatar can be a vishnu tattva (=god) or a jiva tattva empowered by god to make a specific task with divine power

sai baba could be taken also as the clown of the circus, given the fact that no one of his followers has demonstrated his divinity

to define srila prabhupada "ordinary" is very funny... he, as every autentic detached and pure spiritual master, is a shaktiavesha avatara

(to be married is not a shame and is an activity made also by pure devotees and the supreme lord)

i heard a distinction somewhere that seemed pretty reasonable. went like this

brahma:creator

vishnu:upholder

krishna:keeper

kinda like three men were involved in a house. one (brahma) created the house. The next (visnu) made sure the house stood up and stayed strong. The next (krishna) made sure everyone in the house was okay and good and tought of the creators.

does this seem pretty reasonable?

the thing is more simple... krsna and vishnu are the same person

krsna/vishnu is the supreme lord and gives the power to everything included his manifestations and devatas

when we act in the material world we need to be "powered" by god because we , being spiritual souls, have no direct contact and control over our material body

so krsna/vishnu have choosen to give the task of giving us energies for our actions to three devatas

ignorance is given to shiva

passion is given to sri brahma

goodness is in charge of krsna/vishnu himself

but ultimately all the powers come from vishnu/krsna

All the above three would not function without the dance of SHIVA. If he stops every thing comes to stand still. The dance of Shiva is considered an act of creation. It arouses dormant energies. This productive energy of the Absolute in its pristine strength represents the forces of evolution and involution, the appearance and disappearance of the universe.

Every aspect of life has two opposite entities. Deva is the divine principle and Bhuta is matter. Deva is light , truth and immortality; Bhuta is darkness, untruth and death. One is positive and the other is negative; one is life and the other is inertia. The cycle of life and death can only proceed when these two basic opposite forces, represented by the Devas and the Bhutas are finally reconciled. These two opposite principles are eternally in conflict (Daivasuram) but become reconciled in the body of Shiva. Their co-existence is expressed in the rhythm of Shiva's dance.

Natraj - the cosmic dancer - represents the constant biodance of life- creation, maintenance and transformation and indicates the perfect balance between life and death. Shiva's dance is the most inspiring and pragmatic act typifying the eternal rhythm which is the cause of the infinite creative process. Shiva is the presiding deity of the mind. The entire universe created by Shiva is his SHAKTI (Prakriti, or Nature) or energy. Shiva's dance movements represent the movement of his SHAKTI or energy.

Bhagavad Gita, Ch.13, Verse 29:

"He sees, who sees that all actions are performed

by Nature alone and that the Self is actionless."
