kandukondein 0 Report post Posted May 2, 2004 Hi, I Needed some information on the Mahara Jyothi being witnessed every year in Sabarimala. I have done a bit of Googling on that and i get conflicting statements in different sites. Some sites say that its just an illusion,Others say the local tribes celebrating the onset of new month and so on.Anyone who has witnessed the Jyothi can really help me know better. Regards Kandukondein
Jahnava Nitai Das 2 Report post Posted May 2, 2004 Prior to 1977 the jyothi would appear in the sky as a bright deepam that would move in a circle. After 1977 the jyothi stopped appearing. To keep the pilgrims coming (and filling the hundi with offerings) the government arranges for a fire to be lit on the mountain top each year. Thus the "jyothi" now appears as a small fire light on a distant mountain, not in the sky.
