I love potatoes - what point are you trying to make in regard to fat?

This is controversial, to say the least. All I can say is that in all the years that experts have been pushing an extremely low fat diet, obesity rates have gotten higher than ever. Fats are highly satiating for many people--they may actually consume fewer calories overall when they take in enough fat to satisfy them. (Presumably that explains why diets like Atkins sometimes work.) If dieters merely avoid fat and still take in too many calories from any food category, they will continue to gain weight. It seems likely that a balanced diet is best overall--no one major category of macromolecule should be condemned as inherently evil unless it is consumed in excess.

As far as tofu goes, the "lite" version of firm tofu is an exceedingly low calorie food. According to the government-approved label, a 79 g serving has 40 calories, 7 g soy protein, and 1.5 g total fat. I can live with that. Obviously it is low in fiber, but then, nobody is limiting their diet to tofu. It's hard to call something a highly processed food when it's possible to make it in your own home--you might as well call bread a highly processed food. The Orientals have been eating tofu for centuries and have obviously enjoyed many health benefits from it.

Regarding Olive oil.A short piece from the McDougall newsletter.Rich_____________The Mediterranean Diet Prolongs LifeModified Mediterranean diet and survival: EPIC-elderly prospective cohort study by Antonia Trichopoulou in the April 8, 2005 issue of the British Medical Journal found, “The Mediterranean diet, modified so as to apply across Europe, was associated with increased survival among older people.”1 The reduction in mortality was 8%. This study of 74,607 men and women, aged 60 and more, looked at dietary habits and found people who are relying on more plant foods lived longer. ________________ They could not show any particular benefits from olive oil consumption._______________COMMENT: ( By Dr McDougall) Friends are always asking if you have evidence that your efforts to eat healthier will translate into more life. They may be even so unkind as to remark, “Being a vegetarian won’t make you live any longer – the boredom just makes life seem longer.” The Mediterranean diet research is the largest study ever done to address the question of diet and survival. And yes, diet does work. They also found that the Mediterranean diet is a healthy diet in spite of the olive oil – it is a great diet because of the higher intake of fruits and vegetables and lower consumption of meats and dairy. Considering all the evidence published to date, including that of the 7th Day Adventist vegetarians showing 10 years longer survival than the average resident of California,2 I have no trouble telling you that the more you eat healthy foods (exemplified by the McDougall Diet) the greater your chances of a longer, healthier life.1) Trichopoulou A, Orfanos P, Norat T, Bueno-de-Mesquita B, Ocke MC, Peeters PH, et. al. The point is that humans can and do live on a diet of only potatoes, and

that potatoes have less than 1% fat.

Hi Rich

Please could you cite some actual examples of this... preferably ones which

have been authenticated by scientific study.

I absolutely love potatoes, but I really don't think I would be at all

healthy if I attempted to live on nothing but them... no iron, a lack of

most of the major vitamins, chocked full of carbs, virtually no useful fat

content, low in protein, low in calcium...

Hi Peter,

Here is a short history of the potato. You might find it interesting.

http://whatscookingamerica.net/History/PotatoHistory.htm

______________________________\

____

A landmark experiment was carried out in 1925 on two healthy adults, a

man 25 years old and a woman 28 years old.^2 For 6 months these two

people lived on a diet primarily of white potatoes. (A few additional

items providing insignificant nutrients were added: a few fruits,

coffee, and tea. Because they were losing too much weight, pure

fat—containing no other nutrients—was also added.)

Could a diet of potatoes meet their nutritional needs? Even though they

were both physically active (especially the man) they were described as,

“…in good health on a diet in which the nitrogen (protein) was

practically solely derived from the potato.”

Did they like this diet? The report stated, “They did not tire of the

uniform potato diet and there was no craving for change.”

________

On a personal note, four years ago I lived on potato soup for four

months after being diagnosed with congestive heart failure and sent home

to die.

I got rid of 40 pounds and my total cholesterol dropped down to 125.

My general health improved and my Ejection fraction increased from 20%

to 36 %.

I can now function like a normal human being. Just had my 74 th birthday.:o)

My potato soup consisted of potatoes, cabbage , onion ,celery, water,

caraway seed, black pepper, and celery seed.

Over the last four years my diet has consisted of Potatoes, beans,

cabbage, carrots, onions, garlic, fruit, Distilled water, and tomatoes.

Foods that come from the produce section, nothing that is processed or

has sodium added.

i would think its impossible to LIVE entirely off of potaotes for an extended period of time..at least healthily....eventually you'd suffer severe defiencies.

they could be a major part of a diet...but...not the entire diet...

Which people live on potatoes? I read a book once about a woman who lived

on air - turned out she was mistaken, and actually ate food as well.

In my opinion it is possible to live entirely on potatoes.

Most people do not , but probably could if they had to.

The Irish did a pretty good job of it .

Actually the Irish population increased several times after the

introduction of the potato.

Some years ago I did some research on the Irish diet and found the main

diet during that period was a food called stir about. It consisted of a

bunch of potatoes and a head of cabbage thrown into a large metal pot in

the fireplace. The food was stirred with a big stick and was called stir

about.

The farm hands would scoop out a handful . The typical farm hand would

consume 8 pounds of potatoes a day. Work hard and stay healthy.

In New Guinea the natives live almost entirely on Yams.

In Peru potatoes are the main staple food.

In Russia potatoes and cabbage are the standard staple.

Bear in mind that potatoes have less than 1% fat and yet the folks that

consume them do not have any shortage of fat in their diet.

We do not require more than 1% fat to be healthy.

Also we require less than 300 mg of sodium per day. The potato has enough.

There's no ONE food that will keep you healthy if you attempt to live on only it for any length of time. Can't we all agree on that, at least? Eating a varied diet is key to good nutrition for vegans as much as for anybody else.

I once lost a lot of weight eating nothing but tofu, kichee, greens, and small amounts of brown rice. All super healthy foods. But I'd never advise anybody to eat ONLY those foods for a prolonged period.

[[Which people live on potatoes?]]

Starving 19th Irish farmers before the famine, maybe? Nobody actually stays healthy on potatoes (or any other single food) for long periods. I DID hear of a study which showed that people fed nothing but potatoes do stay in nitrogen balance. In other words, you can get all your daily protein needs from a single vegetable, providing you consume enough of it. But those studies are for limited times only.

Potatoes Alone Suffice

Many populations, for example people in rural Poland and Russia at the

turn of the 19th century, have lived in very good health doing extremely

hard work with the white potato serving as their primary source of

nutrition. One landmark experiment carried out in 1925 on two healthy

adults, a man 25 years old and a woman 28 years old had them live on a

diet primarily of white potatoes for 6 months. (A few additional items

of little nutritional value except for empty calories—pure fats, a few

fruits, coffee, and tea—were added to their diet.)11 The report stated,

“They did not tire of the uniform potato diet and there was no craving

for change.” Even though they were both physically active (especially

the man) they were described as, “…in good health on a diet in which the

nitrogen (protein) was practically solely derived from the potato.”

The potato is such a great source of nutrition that it can supply all of

the essential protein and amino acids for young children in times of

food shortage. Eleven Peruvian children, ages 8 months to 35 months,

recovering from malnutrition, were fed diets where all of the protein

and 75% of the calories came from potatoes. (Soybean-cottonseed oils and

pure simple sugars, neither of which contains protein, vitamins, or

minerals, provided some of the extra calories.)12 Researchers found that

this simple potato diet provided all the protein and essential amino

acids to meet the needs of growing and small children.

From your own article it would appear that they had a variety of

other foods, including fat, as well as potatoes and consumed this

diet for six months only.

I know that you will still argue your point, but I really do think it

is obvious that what you are saying is not correct. I will answer

any further emails only when I think you have made a good point.

[[some years ago I did some research on the Irish diet and found the main diet during that period was a food called stir about. It consisted of a bunch of potatoes and a head of cabbage thrown into a large metal pot in the fireplace. The food was stirred with a big stick and was called stir about.]]

I'm sorry to say you're confused. Being part Irish myself, I know that what you are describing is COLCANNON. Stirabout, on the other hand, consists of oatmeal and milk. It was also stirred in a large pot over the fireplace but there the resemblance ends. The traditional Irish diet consisted of a lot of such simple foods. There is a big difference between living on oatmeal, milk, cabbage and potatoes vs. just living on potatoes. I myself lived on tofu, rice and kimchee (pickled cabbage) for several months--it's more or less equivalent.

It is certainly possible that I could be in error regarding Stir about,

but I doubt it.

After the potato famine the British provided oats to the starving Irish.

This caused great unrest and even food riots. I read that the starving

people hated oats and demanded potatoes which the British refused to

provide. They said the oats hurt their stomachs.

Having tried regular oats in its natural state I can understand why

they rebelled.

Not the same as processed oats like we know today.

I just looked up COLCANNON in Wikipedia , this is what they said about

the subject.

Hi Jo

I believe I still have that book... it's called " Living on Light " . I forget

the name of the author, but I know when she was challenged to prove it under

scientific observation she was almost dead within a week and had to admit

that it was just a theory, not a practical reality.

Not sure how this helps - Wikipedia is a wiki - that means it's written by

ordinary people, some of whom know what they're talking about, and some of

whom are a few apples short of an orchard. Please could you point me in the

direction of some actual scientific studies.

Hi Rich

OK then... so, if you're sure it's possible to survive healthily on

potatoes, perhaps you could prove it, and actually do it in a scientifically

controlled environment. I personally doubt you would be healthy, and until

someone actually does prove it, I'm not gvoing to believe otherwise.

I don't deny that potatoes are staples - but that's very different to being

all that you need.

Again " primary source " - that's not the same as " only source " . Incidentally,

having studied 19th century Russia and Poland for my undergraduate degree,

I'm very well aware that the maximum life expectancy was 40 years old, and

the average life was about 33. Not a great advert for their diet.

With regard to the experiment you cite - could you point me in the direction

of the peer reviewed journal in which it was published. An ad hoc report in

the newsletter of someone who seems to have a significant lack of

nutritional knowledge, and clearly an agenda to push, is hardly a good

reference.

Incidentally, is " Dr " McDougal a real Dr, and if so, what is his Doctorate

in?

Dr McDougal is local MD who advocates a strict vegetarian diet

i think this article was taken out of context

yes, potatoes are a wonderful food, but you couldn't just survive off of them

he advocates a healthy veggie diet for a variety of ailments...

he has some hip expensive clinic up in the North Bay

he has also been criticized lately amongst certain circles for being too

" commercial "

for what its worth.........
