We like the autobahns. Nice big roads, not too much traffic - lovely.

I guess the trouble with southern England is that it is a bit

overcrowded and there are traffic jams all the time so you can't get

up to the allowed speeds all the time.

To test your driving skill try driving in Sonoma County. There are streets

that aim straight at telephone poles and then zig around them. There are

streets that start and stop and you have to go around whole sections to get

to the other end.

For a real adventure, try Seattle. Even the cops have to carry maps because

there is no reasoning or logic to the street designs.

Some real fun is the railroad tracks in Richmond. Six streets come together

at a junction with the railroad. At any given time you can find yourself

stuck on the tracks because the lights and gates aren't coordinated. As

small children we were petrified of those intersections!

I've hauled horses across the U.S., Canada and Mexico and can tell you that

Sonoma County has the worst drivers in the world. Give me the Nimitz,

Chicago or even TJ anyday over the drivers in Sonoma County!

It is a miracle that I didn't kill anyone and that all the horses didn't

look like Pugs, Bull dogs or Pekes! For some reason folks seem to think

that a LARGE truck pulling a 24' trailor loaded with a few ton of horses can

stop in the same amount of space it takes a VW Bug!

Oh well. It's probably going to get worse. They will have congestion

charges all over the south of England in a few years, not just London. Do

you have congestion charges there?

What amazed me about the Bay Area was that the traffic never let up, no

matter what time of day it was or which way you were heading. My work

often took me to Santa Clara and trying to get back into SF, whether it was

2:30 in the afternoon or 8 at night, was a nightmare. I learned a lot

about patience that year. I grew up/learned to drive on the Mendocino

Coast where traffic means you just wait for a straight spot to pass the guy

in front of you. When I moved to Sacramento, my blood pressure was

probably through the roof because I was constantly screaming about the

traffic and other drivers. In SF, it became all about Zen, because I'd

probably be dead if I hadn't learned to calm down and just go with the

(very slow) flow.

Actually, the traffic in town isn't too bad. It's the freeways that suck.

Are you sure you've never been to Boston? I've driven in Santa Rosa and

I've been a passenger in Boston and Salem (too scared to get behind the

wheel myself) and I'll take Santa Rosa anyday of the week.

no

tho, i like that the mayor of london did wot he did

america is a car fuled society...

we view cars as a right, not a privilage...

most folks live like 30 minutes from their work if not further....

we have no public transportation

you are encouraged to live in some hell suburb out in what was a meadow the year

before, in a house that looks just like yer neighbors, with some naziesque

neighborhood meeting group which tells you how tall yer lawn can be, and what

plants you can grow there...

AM..

took about 45 minutes to get into SF

should have taken BART..

Re: Re: small towns

Love,

Anna

LOL. It's Glasgow we always seem to get lost in. The roads all seem to

lead to Edinburgh and we go round and round trying to find our way out.

I lived in Sonoma County for over 30 years. I've driven, pulling a 4 horse

trailer, through every major city in the U.S. plus some in Mexico and

Canada. I can testify that there are no worse drivers in the world, bar

none, than in Sonoma County. At least in other cities there is some logic.

They are all trying to get from point a to point b as fast as they can and

you're on your own. In Sonoma County, however, it is roulette! Maybe we'll

decide to drive 60 in a 30 but then again, wow, stomp on the brakes, maybe

we want to go 15 in a 30. What, you are only supposed to make a left hand

turn from the center lane. Too bad, WE are going to make a left hand turn

from whatever lane we blamed well feel like doing it from. What, that

cement divider means you are supposed to stay on the side with the folks

going in the same directions you are. Nope, I'm going to drive on the

other side because I can get into that parking lot faster.

I used to work for the City of Santa Rosa in purchasing. The cops were

always in our office and I ran all the paper on the under cover cars. We

had cops that had transferred in from other cities because they thought it

would be quieter in the smaller town. NOT! Most were eager to transfer

back to the bigger cities within 6 months! We had one guy that said he

wasn't getting paid enough to play bumper cars with the crazy drivers in SR

and he was from NYC!

LOL. It's Glasgow we always seem to get lost in. The roads all seem to

lead to Edinburgh and we go round and round trying to find our way out.

I've been watching a series of six programmes which went around the coasts

of Britain. It was lovely really.

I do like Scotland - especially the Highlands. We hadn't been before about

20 years ago, but now go every other year almost. I think my favourite

place there was when we walked along the Nevis gorge - so if you get to

Scotland try to go there (preferably outside of midge season).
