and, most of the ones i've seen, especially in the last 5-8 yrs, have been

either barely hanging on, er are yuppie havens

then again..i'm prolly biased as i'm a city fraggle..and small american towns

this year alone so far i've been to portland and seattle, death valley, the

oregon border, LA twice(ugh), san diego, reno, monterey, several times to santa

It sounds like Fraggles fur is ruffled! You've done a lot of travelling.

I've not done much at all this year - Wales, Cornwall, and short trips in

the south of England.

Loreena McKennit wrote a beautiful song inspired by her trip on the

Trans-Siberian Railway - Nightride Through the Caucasians, I think it's

called. I've added a trip on this train to my list of dream vacations

(walking the St. James pilgrimage across northern Spain and hitting every

country in South America.)

LOL! When we drive to the Highlands of Scotland it takes from 10 to 14

hours, depending on traffic jams and road works. A 12 minutes walk gets me

to the nearest village, although there is only a tiny shop which doesn't

sell anything you could describe as proper food.

may I ask a question politely,

how does one afford all of this traveling.

It is one of my favorite things to do, but I haven't got the dough.

I you have any tips on low cost traveling would apreciate it.

We've been vacationing/traveling on change for years. All change, no excuses, go into a beer stein (get your hands off the stein, Fraggle <g>). Plus all our recycling money. Plus I sell on Amazon.com. Adds up fast!

I think it's under 500 miles to Edinburgh then another 100 maybe to

the top of the highlands. I think the motorways finish at Edinburgh

and then it's small roads the rest of the way, and even on our

motorways we have lots of hold ups - like going round London, and

coming into Edinburgh (one of my young friends at work, and his

brother, are there this week and next doing a stand up spot in the

festival. It's their first time so I hope it goes well).

Do you have speed limits in America? Ours is 70 mph on the motorways,

but when they have roadworks they put the speeds down to 50 or

sometimes 40.

this ain't the autobahn!

:)

for years, the national speed limit was 55mph

but that was tossed out a number of years back

it varies from state to state

the general speed limit on california highways and freeways is 65mph..with a few

places at 70mph

but..a lot of folks look at speed limits as " suggestions "

I'm afraid so. She managed to stay here 11 years - we knew her for

about eight of those. A lovely, charismatic person. When she was

here legally she was a sort of housemaid for Lady Aster. Then she

moved to Wales and then to Drumnadrochit, and worked on an organic

farm - living in a caravan. She loved it. The last few years we met

up with her when we went to the Highlands for our holiday, and she

came to visit just before her last appeal.

Last time I was Montana, the posted speed limit was " Reasonable. " Hey, as

far as I'm concerned, 85 is reasonable!

For Canada it is simple: Get a sponsor, have a relative or buy a farm.

Lynda, who has been looking into it and qualifies under two of them.

Although she's not so sure she'd like Nova Scotia!

Oh, you mean they aren't suggestions? Dang! Now that is as upsetting as

finding out that the posted speed limits in Mexico (we used to live ther)

were not in MPH. Sheesh, 90 sounded good to me! But what the hye, no one

ever complained <<bg>>

We like the autobahns. Nice big roads, not too much traffic - lovely.

I guess the trouble with southern England is that it is a bit

overcrowded and there are traffic jams all the time so you can't get

up to the allowed speeds all the time.
