Anti-G8 protesters fought running battles with 1,000 police in the centre of the city, which was brought to a standstill for six hours. Police accused a " hard core " of activists of being " irresponsible " and risking people's safety on Monday. About 90 people were arrested and will face court appearances on Tuesday at Edinburgh's Sheriff's Court. More than 20 protesters and police officers were injured. At least four police officers were taken to hospital after clashes with demonstrators. They are clearly organised and coordinated. Lothian and Borders Assistant Chief Constable Tom Halpin said a small group had been determined to cause " as much disruption as possible " . He said: " They are clearly organised and coordinated. More protesters tried to join the march at the Shandwick Place end and were pushed back. One managed to climb halfway up a building with a black flag. There was a report a group entered the Caledonian Exchange building, which houses offices of the financial services company Standard Life. The company said they did not get into their premises. A further stand-off took place on Princes Street itself, where dozens of police vans containing riot police were stationed. Police in full riot gear then set up lines, including a 40-strong wall of officers outside the National Galleries of Scotland. Throwing things Eyewitness Michael Findlay, 27, said he saw about 30 protesters picking up wheeled supermarket cages and throwing them at two rows of police in full riot gear in Rose Street. The police line stood firm while behind them about 15 to 20 mounted police looked on. The Edinburgh resident said bottles were thrown and the situation appeared volatile. Mark Ballard and Shiona Baird found themselves surrounded on three sides by police in Hanover Street shortly before 1800 BST. Mr Ballard said: " Police were rushing into the crowd and antagonising them. It was the most surreal and bizarre policing I have ever seen. They started shaking the taxi and trying to tip it over, I was angry but also really frightened George Kennedy Taxi driver " Police seemed to be inflaming the situation by letting innocent bystanders wander into the areas of trouble, then not let them exit. " The MSPs had returned from a mass blockade at the Faslane naval base in Argyll and Bute. Starhawk has been up there for a couple of weeks, getting the camp ready. Guest guest Report post Posted July 6, 2005 Hi Nikki I phoned him just now, and he is okay - meeting up with the rest of the Pagan groups at a set point, after the march. As you say, he avoided all the trouble. Starhawk is there, and very experienced with protests - they had different groups moving out of the camp at various times throughout the night as they had heard that the police were going to blockade the camp. Peter's bunch left at 4 a.m. The police had helicopters flying over the camp all night - which was another thing the campers knew was going to happen. Most went with earplugs so they could sleep through it for part of the night. I hear some of the protesters have got through to the perimeter fence of Gleneagles - peacefully, but very noisy, apparently. At present the eco-camp is surrounded by police - not letting them out. They have been there since 2.30 this morning. Well, I can see why the police would need to be there for that! *sigh* I think again it is a fear of that which they do not understand. I can see them being a bit wary of a large group of people. But it seems to me this group has done nothing to give them extra worries about why they are there. There is no need for the actions that I saw on the news yesterday. Apparently the council is coming out to inspect the site - which they agreed the eco-village could be formed on for the G8 protest. I have just heard from Peter again to say he is okay - but his battery is low, so may not hear again until he is home. Guest guest Report post Posted July 7, 2005 Hi Nikki Yes - they heard. I only found that out from Indymedia though, as there are photos on their from the campsite - banners of sympathy for London. I must say that Indymedia has been excellent with their coverage of the G8 camp and protests - I've checked it every half hour for updates on what is going on, and there is often new news on there. It's been the same today with the London bombs. I'm not sure when Peter is due home - either tomorrow night, very late or Saturday afternoon I think. The Clown Army had met up in the Uni building to put on face paint, and the building was completely surrounded by riot police before they'd even got their make-up on. The attitude of the police was that no-one was allowed to protest in any way unless it had been discussed with the police, and they effectively imprisoned the clowns for most of the day! > Police accused a " hard core " of activists of being " irresponsible " > and risking people's safety on Monday. Interestingly, the activists are blaming a " hard core " of police of being irresponsible and risking peoples safety - if that isn't slightly understating the activity of hitting out randomly with batons. > They are clearly organised and coordinated. From what I could see, the police inside the fence around Gleneagles were armed (in fact, I think they were the American Marines that our government shipped in), but those outside the fence only had the regular batons. Most unmarked police cars now have a little something in the boot for special occaisons ( if you know what I mean) - or so I have been led to believe, and after the last couple of days in London, its only going to be more and more commonplace to see firearms "experts" on the street. Lothian and Borders Assistant Chief Constable Tom Halpin said a small group had been determined to cause "as much disruption as possible". He said: "They are clearly organised and coordinated. There is evidence of weapons being brought into the city, into the city centre by protesters, despite their apparent outward display of good humour." The demonstration was billed as the Carnival For Full Enjoyment. More protesters tried to join the march at the Shandwick Place end and were pushed back. One managed to climb halfway up a building with a black flag. There was a report a group entered the Caledonian Exchange building, which houses offices of the financial services company Standard Life. The company said they did not get into their premises. A further stand-off took place on Princes Street itself, where dozens of police vans containing riot police were stationed. Police in full riot gear then set up lines, including a 40-strong wall of officers outside the National Galleries of Scotland. Throwing things Eyewitness Michael Findlay, 27, said he saw about 30 protesters picking up wheeled supermarket cages and throwing them at two rows of police in full riot gear in Rose Street. The police line stood firm while behind them about 15 to 20 mounted police looked on. The Edinburgh resident said bottles were thrown and the situation appeared volatile. He said: "The protesters definitely started it, they started throwing things at police." Ms Jamieson said: "It is sad and disappointing that a hard core of protesters are more interested in protest for protest's sake and not in joining the rest of the country in focussing on the real issues of poverty and climate change." Mass blockade Two Green members of the Scottish Parliament who got caught up in the protest criticised police for antagonising the crowd. Mark Ballard and Shiona Baird found themselves surrounded on three sides by police in Hanover Street shortly before 1800 BST. Mr Ballard said: "Police were rushing into the crowd and antagonising them. It was the most surreal and bizarre policing I have ever seen. The MSPs had returned from a mass blockade at the Faslane naval base in Argyll and Bute. Ms Baird said: "Faslane today was a textbook peaceful protest and to come across this in Edinburgh was very disappointing."
