Petah, Petah, Petah (in my best Bettie Davis voice), most Americans think

they are part Cherokee, dear, not Irish. AND, when telling folks their

grandmother was a Cherokee princess haven't he foggiest notion of what the

term " Cherokee princess " means <eg>

I just saw an episode of sliders

where the Republic of California was an independent country

their president Charleton Heston (not sure if that would be a good thing)

was opposed to the ole USA sorta of a Blue state thing

might even move back if Cal was independent =o]]

of course it would have to include the old territories of Nevada and Arizona

but it would be good ..lol

isn't that kinda like a nightmare????:)To send an email to -

Yuck, No!

If I were to move there, it definately wouldn't be to Phoenix or

anywhere else heavily populated.

It would be somewhere I could get a decent size piece of land and

though not too far to civilization, not too close either.

New Mexico and Nevada wouldn't be bad either. Somewhere warm most if

not all of the time, close to nature.

First you need to know that over the last few decades it has become " in "

over here to be American Indian. Gets old real fast when you realise that

until 1928 an American Indian had no rights and was legally defined by law

as " not human. "

Now, one has to understand that there is no " royalty " in the Cherokee

Nation. The term was used by folks to describe " hang around the fort "

Indian women who were, hmmm, well to put it bluntly, whores. So, needless

to say with the history of discrimination, etc. " real " Indians get quite a

kick out of folks who have " discovered " they are Indian and proudly proclaim

that their grandmother was a " Cherokee princess. "

Of course, 99% of them aren't and haven't a clue. My only comment to them

is that if there were that many Cherokees the invaders would never have

taken over this continent.

Go to Germany. There are whole groups that are just goo gaa over anything

American Indian. They spend weeks at a time " playing " Indian and will spend

a mint on anything authentic American Indian. Give themselves American

Indian names, pay for " real " American Indians to come over and teach them

how to be American Indian.

Wouldnt make any difference would it? friendly fire, my foot! We painted our tanks and aircraft with agreed markings so that you wouldnt attack them, and you have sophisticated technology to identify them, and still you "offered" friendly fire. What do you do to your enemies?

Now, as anyone who knows me will know, I am not at all fond of any army, and I'm in no way "patriotic", but it has to be said that the number of British troops killed by US "friendly fire" is rather high, and yet not a single death caused by "friendly fire" by British troops. Of course, most British troops do have experience of doing service in a scenario not too different from Iraq at the moment, since most of them have served in Northern Ireland at some point during their careers!

Still, we must remember that Rumsfeld is the man who thinks that drinking Formaldahyde and Formic acid is safe, so we shouldn't take him too seriously.

A related question... what is the PC term for these folks nowadays? A couple

of years ago, it was Native American, and I seem to remember about 10 years

ago " Indian " was generally considered to be derogatory... there seem to be

so many terms, I no longer know which ones are considered acceptable!

Her father came straight off the boat. Of course, after he shot her mother,

he hopped a train and then got on the first boat heading back to Ireland and

was never seen again <<bg>> It should be noted that when her mother died at

a very advanced age (well over 90) that she still had one of the bullets in

her hip.

If we had our drothers folks would ask and the name of the people in

question would be used. Kinda like folks calling everyone from the east

side of the pond Europeans or the west side of the pond Americans.

With the influx of east Indians to the U.S. it has become somewhat

confusing. So it is up for grabs but a lot of the rez raised and those

raised in their ethnic traditions refer to themselves as " The People " or

" First Nations. "

Now are you confused <g>
