Who wrote the article? Did it site sources? Who funded the research?

I highly recommend checking Dr. Greger's DVDs on nutrition.

Hi Ange,

I'd look more into who wrote the article . there are a lot of anti-soy

and anti-vegetarian articles out there out of the Weston A. Price

Foundation or written by their leaders like Sally Fallon . I'd weigh

those with . okay nothing, I'd totally ignore those. :-) There is a

health benefit to fermented foods, but unfermented soy is a part of our

regular diet . I use to be more careful about the soy we ate, how often,

how much, etc., until I read more into where the info is coming from.

Even some good friends were bantering around these articles and fake

statistics (cited from their own writings, that cite their own writings,

that cite their own literature, . that if you trace back, just came from

their own speeches or writings, with no scientific background). So, I'd

just check the source and see how much you trust it, and then do more

research on the topic. There's tons written in the archives of this

group, and on the VRG site and others.

Good soy luck! :-)

I agree with what the others have said...look at the source and

credibility of the article. Sometimes there is a hidden agenda in

putting out such information.

We eat soy, including the kids.... we don't go overboard with it, but we

don't with any food. So we don't treat it any differently. But I think

some soy, especially non-GMO sources (like organic tofu, tempeh, etc.)

are healthy additions to our diet.

There is good soy, like non-GMO tofu and edamame, and bad soy, like processed

protein powders.

Most meat eaters eat WAY more soy than most vegetarians eat, because of the

amount of soy fed to animals.

Yeah, I've read lots of negative articles on soy and hardly ever eat it

myself.  I only eat tofu occasionally (once/month or less).  I don't prepare

it at home but order it sometimes when we go out to eat (which is probably a bad

choice since most restaurants don't choose organic, non-GMO soy!!).

Unfortunately, I can't stand Tempeh but I do like miso which is fermented.

My children rarely ever eat tofu because they just refuse to  eat it.  They've

probably only eaten a few bites ever.  And we don't drink soy milk or eat

processed soy products (like fake soy meats).

Overall, I think soy is okay in very small amounts (small serving once week?).

Try to choose non-GMO tofu.  :)

Good luck!

Mercola is not a vailid source, in my opinion, for info on nutrtion. He is hand

and hand with Weston A. Price Foundation. Please research any info from him

carefully.

This comes up time and again on the internet and with people on this list,

it seems. Here is one of the balanced pieces that I felt covered the topic

well:

http://www.foodrevolution.org/what_about_soy.htm

It is by John Robbins, who wrote " Diet for a New America. " This is also a

good one from Colin Campbell:

http://www.vegsource.com/news/2009/09/dr-campbell-responds-to-dr-mercola.html

Both have been posted before, I think, but are no less valuable if they're

new to you.

Cheers,

Mark

Scroll down to the bottom for Mercola's comments. He mentions that he keeps a

copy of the Price book in his office to show patients.

http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2001/01/21/weston-price.aspx

Generally, he advocates for a very similar diet to what the WAPF promotes. He is

lockstep with them when it comes to soy, but is at odds with them on some

things, like cod liver oil.

http://www.westonaprice.org/Cod-Liver-Oil-Setting-the-Record-Straight.html

If you read the Wikipedia page on him it spells it out a bit more and says he

advocates what is essentially a paleolithic diet, very similar to the WAPF.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_Mercola#Diet

I typically direct people to links that have already been provided.
