Hi Janey ;=)

Nice to have you join us! Please feel free to post whenever you like,

won't you? We're an informal lot here *lol* You might want to take a

look at the recipes in the Files section - also the Links and Polls.

Meanwhile, it'd be great if you could fill out the questionnaire when

you have a moment so that we'll feel we know you a little bit better -

saves a lotta time, right?

Well, there are a whole lot of us on this list eager to lose a little

weight - or a lot of it. At 10.3 stone, you shouldn't have too hard a

time losing what you need to in order to have all the weight in the

right places. That and a little - wait for it! - exercise *lol* Anyway,

let us know how you're doing and just join in with the chat, okay?

Best,

Pat (Moderator)

Hi Mandie....we're glad to have you aboard! We have tons of recipes

in the " files " section. I've tried quite a few with great success (of

course putting my own spin on the recipes...peppers, peppers, garlic,

oh and more peppers).

Some of us here really enjoy cooking. So, if you ever have any

questions or have a recipe request, just let us know! Are there any

special veg dishes that you enjoy?

Cheers,

Shawn :)

Jennifer, there must be a fairly large veg*n community in Portland. In the

brand new VegNews that just came out (March/April 2004) there is a whole

article on veg*n shopping, restauants and grocery stores. Check it out at

vegweb.com They say there is even a vegan grocery store named Food Fight!

Pretty

cool. --Tracy

A friend of mine (not a vegetarian) used to send her son to a day care

that served only lacto vegetarian food because the owners were Indian and

followed a lacto vegetarian diet themselves. That's not exactly vegan,

but it's a lot closer than most day cares. If there is a South Asian

community in your area, you may be able to find something similar by

asking members how they or their vegetarian friends handle day care and

diet issues.

Another option, if you know any other vegetarian or vegan families with

young children, might be to share the cost of a nanny. A nanny would

hopefully respect your diet instructions more than a large center. (If

not, it's clearly time for a new nanny.)

Hi Kevin,

Congrats on choosing the raw foods lifestyle.

It's hard at first, but after a few months, it's easy to stick with.

Depending on where you live, you might be able to find raw takeout foods in

local stores.

If you live in certain places, you might even have a raw restaurant to go to.

I'm trying to get someone to open one here in Sarasota, FL.

I used to live in Manhattan where there are at least five, plus takeout, and

there is at least one more in Brooklyn.

Hey Kevin:

Started rawing in August, and mostly, going relatively easily. Some

days are a challenge depending upon who I'm with and what doing, eg.

at a business luncheon, it can be a challenge depending upon the

restaurant they choose (esp. here in TX), or some times there's just

that craving that willpower doesn't quite seem to overcome, though

most days manage quite well. Taking lunch to the office, when don't

have a business lunch, really helps me to support this choice. And,

what saw the other day on this post, where person recommended to keep

reading about why making this choice, until it's instilled as a

practice, has been helpful to me as well, leading to few slips. Good

for you that you're making this conscious choice to support your

health, and likely that of your children too. Nice side benefit is

feeling better and some weight loss [gone down about 15 lb.s already

since Aug., with exercise too].

Blessings,

A

Hi Kevin,

I'm 41 and was diagnosed a few years ago with hypoglycemia. The dr. put me on a

high protein, higher fat diet as well. It helped for a while but not for the

long run. I've been eating raw for a while now and feel much better. I can eat

all the fruit I want and not have episodes now!

I don't write here much, I am on the road traveling a lot, but I do check emails

if you ever want to chat about the hypo journey on raw.

Le,

Thanks so much for responding! I have been very surprised by the responses so

far. It's been wonderful to find that people are out there and interested in

sharing their experiences.

You are the only one to respond to the hypoglycemia, though, which I find heart

warming. When I was diagnosed I had no clue how serious the situation was. Nor

did I comprehend how difficult it can be to deal with.

I look forward to getting to know you and many others as I stumble through this

process!

Thanks!

Morningstar has a variety of " fake meats " and, perhaps it is cuz

they are rather full of preservatives, but my meat eating friends

prefer these to the more healthy things. We have lots of success

with their chicken nuggets, chick patties, sausage and riblets.

I also really like the stuff that a company called Veat makes,

though I am down to only two stores I can find them at now. They do

fake chicken products that have a good texture and flavor & cook

nicely in " chicken " type recipes...I use their nuggets for sweet and

sour & kabobs, then they've a smaller product that I use in place of

sort of shredded chicken for pastas and rice and fajitas.

I also like boca burger & morningstar's crumbles...I sometimes add

them to spagetti sauce - more often (last night even) I use them to

make sloppy joes - and I use them for hash, too.

You may however, that you are better off not serving the fake stuff

& sticking to good veggie, beans, etc. recipes. Some people are

really put of by the artificial fake flavors & textures. Though,

the products are getting better now.

Good luck,

m

Thanks! I think the dear husband had a very bad experience with a soy burger

when he thought he was getting the real thing, and... well... I think he is

using that as his vegetarian experience. He'll eat most anything that I cook.

He just likes to have meat.

Hello Nelleke

Welcome to the group. Join in with any chat, ask questions, and make

yourself at home.

I have one point to argue though - you can't possibly have the best guy in

the world - I have! :-)

Jo

Hi, my name is Nelleke, I am new here and thought I'd introduce myself

quickly.

Well, quickly ;-) I am working on my Master thesis, so I love things

to do that are *sooo* (not) important, so I won't have to work at it.

Quickly still though, because if my hubbie love finds out I'm back at

doing nothing..

So that's interesting introduction so far - let's make it a bit more

formal. Like I said, my name is Nelleke - it's a Dutch name, which is

also where I'm from. I study law, almost done (see above) and I will

be moving to Italy in September, also for study. I've studied in

Berkeley, USA as well, a few years back. Oh and actually, thís time WE

are going to Venice, not just me ;-)

I am 25 years old, married to the absolute best guy in the world, who

has actually been vegan for the past three (four? we're not sure

anymore) years. Before that he was vegetarian, and he's been of the

meat-eating path for some 15 years. I've only been eating vegetarian

for the past few years. Living in California was a blast though - mjum

on veggie foods there! We hope things'll be ok in Venice, but

apparently there is a whole island (!) dedicated to 'green' gardening

- hardly anyone living there, just crops and a market. So that sounds

good.

I am actually not too sure whether I will go vegan. This is partly

because of cheese (ever tried Dutch cheese - well hell you should)(oh

wait, this is vegan alley, well there you go - sorry guys ;-)

BTW-hubbie is not into cheese at all, so I always tell him that's why

it was sóó easy for him to go vegan). Of course that's not the whole

case, because I know (yes I knóów) that if you want, then you can,

then you just do it. I guess we should blame the mentality too, but as

we say here: he does the animal rights, I work on human rights.

Now that's me, I am just always looking for more info, so decided to

join you guys and hope you'll teach me some valuables. Whenever we

have anything here, we'll let you know.

And if you know anything about veganism and Italy of veganism and

Venice (in particular) we are more than happy to hear of it!

ciao! Nelleke

Nelleke,

I was in Venice last year great place,

if you want you can eat Vegan almost anywhere in Italy,

most places have the roasted veggies they serve with meals

just ask for extra bread and their veggies as a main course.

I must admit my wife is from Verona sooooo it was easy she did all the ordering =o] but saying all that.

when on the Auto Strade there is a restaurant called "ciao"

they sell Vegan & vegetarian meals too.

if all else fails just go to the veggie markets and stock up

Ciao

Hi Sarah, and welcome!

That vegpledge thing sounded great, but I filled out all the info and then

was taken to a screen that said, " internal error, please contact the

webmaster at... " ...Did anybody else get this message or just me?

What's a creativity coach? sounds like FUN to me. :>)

I'm a vegetarian and trying to go vegan...working on it, I guess is more

accurate...along with my husband. My daughter wants to be totally vegetarian

and really go vegan as well, but she lives with people while she's going to

college who are not simpatico in either path, so...I just try to keep

encouraging her to do what she can, when she can and when she gets out on

her own, she can go full fledge veg.

Meanwhile, my husband and I are making a 'trickle down' difference at our

church. We've only been there a month, but hey, we're doin' great. :>)

There's one other vegetarian there but he has been a complainer that

'there's nothing much to eat.' We've disabused him of that notion--and fast!

We've got one couple who is interested and tried eating no meat for a week,

and were pleasantly surprised with how good everything tasted. And our new

minister and his family are thinking of going vegetarian; his wife is

leaning more and more toward that route, and since they found out we're

vegetarians, that has really fueled the fire.

I'm a SAH, love to cook & bake, also quilting, rubberstamping, cardmaking

and playing the piano and reading. And petting my fur children, Bluebonnet

and Dixie.

Glad to meet you!
