Guest guest Report post Posted November 24, 2009 I've been reading some of your posts about cholesterol. I started a vegan diet about 3 months ago to hopefully lower my bad cholesterol, triglycerides and blood sugar. I'm going back next week to get them retested and if the vegan diet and my daily walking hasn't helped...the I am afraid they will insist that I take a statin. I'm very anti pharmaceutical. I've been trying to follow Neal Barnard's " Reversing Diabetes " recommendations. I do know someone that has taken red yeast rice and got good results from it. A cousin of mine also takes niacin for his cholesterol problem.
Guest guest Report post Posted November 25, 2009 Hopefully your cholesterol will be down after 3 months on a fat-free vegan diet. If not, you can still refuse to take statins. Just because your doctor prescribes something doesn't mean you have to get it filled. The doctor may not like it, but they can't force you to take the medication if you don't want to. Guest guest Report post Posted November 25, 2009 I am a healthcare provider and deal with many patients who state they hate taking their medications due to side effects. Sometimes they seek out an alternative treatment on their own by researching on the net. Just because you think it will work better it may not. Everything you do in life has a side effect. Meds, food, love and sex....some are more fun than others but can also be very dangerous. If you trust your doctor talk about your concerns. Being well informed gives you power.Robin--- On Tue, 11/24/09, threefatesfiber <maryl4 wrote:threefatesfiber <maryl4 Re: Cholesterol Date: Tuesday, November 24, 2009, 4:33 PM Hopefully your cholesterol will be down after 3 months on a fat-free vegan diet. Guest guest Report post Posted November 25, 2009 True. However, it still remains the decision of the patient whether to take medication or not. Personally, I don't think it's my place as a healthcare provider to tell my patient to ignore or tolerate the side effects just to meet (or attempt to meet) a particular set of blood lipid values. The patient needs to decide what is the best course for them. Not everybody chooses to medicate and that's their prerogative, IMO.
