Nice post Rufus :)

I'm on the simplicity train with you. My meals mostly consist of one

thing, usually fruit or leafy greens. Sure, I eat other things too,

but most of the time I can't be bothered with the preparation ;)

Paul Nisson says that everybody knows as much about nutrition as he

does. That's probably oversimplified, but his point is that we all

know that an apple is better for you than apple pie. I think that

there's great value in the study of nutrition, but I also think that

to become preoccupied with where to get what is a huge draw back from

what the raw food diet has to offer. If you do the research you'll

notice that certain nutrients are abundent in foods of the same

color. I eat as many different colors every day as I can. I don't

worry much about it. I do, however, find the workings of the human

body pretty fascinating, so I like to know how it works, what

different nutrients do, and how it all fits together.

Exactly. There's also no right way to be raw. I try out what

different people say - if it works for me I do it, if not, I don't.

I don't like a lot of the foods that people swear you need every day

(sweet fruits mainly), but I'm healthy and I feel great and right

now, that's what matters.

Roger's point about cravings was great. I know that when I crave

sugar I really need either protein or calcuim, so I eat nuts

instead. I'm all about listening to my body and being

educated/attuned enough to understand what it's telling me, even if

it doesn't quite make sense ;)

At any rate, I think being new to raw foods is overwhelming enough,

simplicity goes a long way in remedying that.

Yes Roger I completely agree with what you have said. I remember at a

very young age couldn't have been more than 5 I use to crave salt

with lemon. I would pour some salt on a lemon and lick it off. I

would do this all most obsessively. My mother finally took me to a

doctor and he told her there was something in that lemon/salt combo

that my body needed. Turned out I have a potassium defincey that was

why I was craving the salt. He said I probably wanted the lemon to

make the salt taste better. He told her to start making me eat

bananas and kiwi. So after a few months I no longer craved lemons

with salt. I can't go a day without my bananas or I will go crazy.

As I got older this theory was proven to me over and over. I knew

this lady that was gonna have a baby and she craved the smell of

gasoline. The smell of that gas was causeing some kind of chemical

reaction in her body that was giving her something that she needed.

They never could figure out just what to sub. it with so they let her

sniff some gas every once in a while to calm her cravings.

Our bodies are wonderful machines. It know what we eat and it knows

if it needs something to make use crave a food so we can get what it

needs from it. Just because you are craving bread doesn't mean you

need bread you need somthing that is in that bread.
