I'm eating/drinking Raw!!

Hi everybody! I'm so glad to have found this group! I began vegetarianism at the

same time I started juicing vegetables, fruit and wheatgrass. I started barely 3

weeks ago and I am amazed at how much better I feel and how much quicker my

brain works. I'm also so much better at being present with people and being

loving to others in general. I have been taking anti-depressants for 7 years,

and never felt that great on them but was afraid to go off of them. (I did once,

and got almost suicidal) NOW I'm thinking that it'll be appropriate to go off of

them. I'm in no hurry, but I'm surprised to be getting there! I'm feeling

considerably less depressed. I didn't know that these improvements were possible

with this new diet!

 

I'm wondering if anyone has ideas on what to juice/eat that will facilitate

these qualities.

I am juicing about a half a beet a day to help cleanse my liver. (I had a

ruptured appendix for 5 days that they didn't diagnose until it was almost too

late- this was 20 years ago)

 

What I normally juice daily; 4 carrots, two apples, two oranges, two celery

stalks, 1 Tb size ginger, I/2 beet, 1 or 2 leaves of kale, a cup size of

broccoli, and a fist full of wheatgrass. Sometimes I add cabbage, onion, leek,

garlic. I drink this throughout the day. (I'm eating no dairy or eggs)

 

Any suggestions, or a list of maladies and what to eat/juice for them?

Congratulations Mary Ann!

 

I'm new to the group. I have been thinking about going raw or mostly raw for a

long time now, but I'm finally trying to do it. It sounds like bliss for

you....

 

I would like to be about 80% raw, with the remaining 20% mostly Japanese food,

which I love and which makes me feel good. I have been vegetarian for 29 years,

vegan for 5 1/2. I must be the world's chubbiest vegan. At 41 my health is

starting to cave in, and it's time to get the lead out.

 

For me the drawbacks are expense, and the fact that I am usually still hungry

after eating a pretty decent quantity of fruits or veggies. I have also noticed

that the roof of my mouth is sore, which I think is from eating lots of fruit.

I really love fruit, and could practically live on it if it were affordable, so

I'm wondering how to deal with this.

 

Could anyone tell me what obstacles they have encountered, and how they have

been dealt with? I just know I'll feel so much better once I have cleaned up my

diet, but right now it's somewhat difficult. I would say that expense is my #1

issue right now.

Hi Dani!

 

I'm not allot of help because I'm new too. But I had an experience produce

shopping this week that surprised me. I was stocking up on all the vegetables

and fruit I needed, first going to the " expensive " health food market, then went

to the regular supermarket to get the other items. I was shocked to find out

that allot of the produce I'd passed up at the expensive market, were actually a

good deal cheaper at the expensive market. I went ahead and bought the stuff

because I didn't have time to make another stop. But I learned something. I'm

surprised at actually how much money I'm saving by going raw.

Really!Processed-type food, bread, even tofu is expensive. I didn't think about

it beforehand, but every time I go to either grocery store my bill is

substantially lower! One good, cheap source of raw protein is sprouted beans of

every kind. Mung, adzuki, black-eyed peas, garbanzos etc. Real easy to sprout

yourself and with a bit of salad dressing, or pureed

tomatoes+spices....delicious! I just sprout them all together so they're

colorful and multiply the protein value as a group.

 

Good luck to you! YOU inspire me! I will say that I have lost at least 5 pounds

in the last 3 weeks. My clothes are getting deliciously loose! Juicing and

drinking all of that stuff together seems to make me feel full and nourished.AND

I'm far less interested in foods that I used to crave! I'm not good at denying

myself. I don't believe in it. What's cool is, I don't feel deprived in the

least! For the last year or so I couldn't GET enough to eat. I felt like eating

all of the time. Huge things of popcorn, sweets, some good food, but allot of

it. I am really not hungry at all like I used to be (so far)! All of that was

unexpected!

 

I'm cheering for you! I'm looking forward to hearing more from you.

Hi Dani,

Going raw is wonderful! If by Japanese food you mean vegetarian sushi

rolls, after you go raw, you'll quickly notice that the rice makes

you feel bloated and lethargic. At least that's how it was for me. I

LOVED vegetarian california rolls (and still would love them), but

the rice always made me feel so tired the following day, so i quit

eating them. I really miss wasabi, though!

My two biggest obstacles were learning how to shop to eat raw and getting

organized.

 

SHOPPING

It was a big transition from buying food that I could store in my pantry to

buying fresh food that would not keep long. I tended to buy too much of too

many different kinds of fruits and vegetables, thinking I needed to eat

everything I saw in the produce section. It took me a while to learn to buy

only the things I knew I would eat. No matter how beautiful yellow and red

peppers look and no matter how good they may be for me, I know that I'm just

throwing money away if I buy them because I absolutely hate the taste of

peppers.

 

On the other hand, sometimes I felt funny having a shopping cart overflowing

with carrots. But I eat tons and tons of carrots so I knew they wouldn't be

wasted.

 

So I wasted a lot of money on ruined food in the beginning but it's leveled off

now that I'm learning what I enjoy eating and the amounts I need to buy. If

your mind still thinks you're spending a lot money, just calculate how many

fruits and veggies you can buy for the price of a potroast.

 

 

GETTING ORGANIZED

One very important thing that I wish I had done earlier was clean out my

refrigerator - I mean totally clean it out - and invest in some good storage

bags and keepers. I was always trying to shove my fruits and veggies into a

half-full fridge and they'd get lost and crammed into the back of shelves. Each

time I'd go to get something to eat, it was a little stressful. Once I started

with a bare fridge, and got my food organized into an attractive and manageable

manner, eating became much more pleasurable and much easier to eat raw because

it was pleasing to my eye and quick and easy to access.

 

Another thing that took some getting used to was having my juicer, blender and

food processor out on my counter. I like a clean, uncluttered counter and

normally don't have these out. But I found I was spending all my time dragging

them out to use them and that eventually became frustrating. So I organized

them in an area by themselves for easy access.

 

These are pretty simple things, but they've certainly made eating raw easier for

me.

I've been overcoming sickness in my body with juice

therapy and a mostly raw diet. This includes Chronic

Fatigue Syndrome, Candidiasis, Hypothyroidism, Adrenal

Disfunction, & Mercury Toxicity. Mary Ann, keep up

the good work. I recommend continuing your juice

therapy and trying to rotate foods to juice. For

example, cucumbers are great kidney cleansers, alfalfa

sprouts are very high in concentrated protein, etc. I

also juice:

bib lettuce, romaine lettuce, collard greens, kale,

carrots, celery, bell peppers, sweet potatoes,

parsley, apples, pears, you name it.

 

The only thing I wouldn't recommend is to mix any

fruits other than apples with vegetables. This is a

primary law of proper food combining. Acid fruits

like oranges, should only be eaten or drunk with other

acid fruits or subacid fruits (no vegetables).

 

You will be off your meds in no time. Wean off slowly

since your body becomes accustomed (and almost

addicted) to the toxic meds.

Gosh Regina! That helps unbelievably! I, also have hypothyroidism. Do you think

I will be able to eventually go off of the synthroid? (150mcg) How long have you

been juicing? Are you feeling allot better? I'm so grateful for your help!

I've been weaning off my thyroid meds slowly for about

8 months now. I was on Armour Thyroid and Cytomel-

very high doses. The sicker I got, the more sluggish

my thyroid got. You can definitely get off the meds.

Believe that for sure! A great combination for the

thyroid is carrots, bell pepper, cucumber, bib lettuce

and alfalfa sprouts in the juicer.

I find that the more I juice, the faster my body

heals. I also fast here and there for about 4 days

with juices and colon hydrotherapy. Fasting is

amazing! It brings me leaps and bounds ahead. It

allows the body to dump toxic waste from the organs

right into the colon and kidneys to be eliminated.

Of course, keeping mostly raw and proper food

combining is extremely important. I went off my diet

just last Saturday and I've been sick for the past two

days. It just makes me never want to eat cooked,

processed food again.

Thanks Francoise!

 

I'm going to do the refridgerator thing tonight! That was really great advice -

good psychology.

 

My only equipment thus far is a blender. I'm not interested in getting a juicer

at this point because I really want to eat everything as whole as possible, and

I can use my plain old fashioned citrus juicer for grapefruits & oranges, and

make smoothies in the blender. I would like to get one of those gadgets that

makes noodles out of veggies, though!

AZ,

 

I was thinking of sushi, and also okono-miyaki, iniri, soba, miso, and other

things. Ok, so 90% raw! Anyway, I know I can make sushi with sprouted grains

or no grains at all. I can really imagine how eating cooked rice could feel

like a gutbomb if one is used to living foods, so I'm going to experiment with

alternatives.

Mary Ann, this sounds exactly like me:

of help!

 

I have been sprouting lentils, and will do more of this. I have made raw hummus

in the past, which was great, so more of that too! You really cleared up the

economics issue for me - the problem is that in my transition, I seem to have

been buying a lot of vegan convenience foods, more than usual. It's as though

I'm buying a full load of grocieries for the me that is a cooked food junkie and

another full load for the me that aspires to be raw.

 

I have been buying organic for years, so I've got that part down, thank

goodness. It's the emotional eating that's going to be the big thing to make

peace with now.

 

An interesting thing about making a gradual transition is that you really notice

how foods make you feel. Today I ate bagels. Mucky!

 

Anyway, tonight is the night. I'm going to run off and make salad and some

banana-cherry " ice cream " - just bananas and cherries and a dash of vanilla.

That reminds me: I would love any recipes for raw treats. E-mail your

favorites, anyone, please!

 

Tomorrow will be a 100% raw day.

Do I detect strictness in your assignment for today?! (joking) I love your idea

of raw humus! I'd love to have that recipe! I don't really have any recipes. I

got into this thinking I'd just be adding a nutritious supplement to my diet.

What I juiced was so delicious (surprisingly!) and I drank so much of it AND I

was satiated and felt good!! Then I began to realize that this could be the bulk

of my diet! And started to feel even better!

 

Check this out---From independent information that I have found (an on-line

store that sells both types of juicers and high-powered blenders in almost all

manufacturers-www.juicersdirect.com, where I purchased my Samson juicer, or, I'm

sure could be purchased direct from the manufacturer www.greenbison.com) This

was while talking on the phone with the shipping person at juicersdirect, or

Open Chute: ) when you juice at a low rpm (mine, the Samson 6 in 1 juicer,

juices at 80 rpm as compared to many other brands that juice at 3000+) you keep

to 90% MORE than you. If liquefying the whole piece of produce only lets your

body utilize 20 to 30%, imagine what a low percentage your body is absorbing by

merely chewing and swallowing! Maybe 3%!! (I'm guessing)

or so I couldn't GET enough to eat. I felt like eating all of the time. Huge

things of popcorn, sweets, some good food, but allot of it. " So you really are

a lot of help!

 

I have been sprouting lentils, and will do more of this. I have made raw

hummus in the past, which was great, so more of that too! You really cleared up

the economics issue for me - the problem is that in my transition, I seem to

have been buying a lot of vegan convenience foods, more than usual. It's as

though I'm buying a full load of grocieries for the me that is a cooked food

junkie and another full load for the me that aspires to be raw.

 

I have been buying organic for years, so I've got that part down, thank

goodness. It's the emotional eating that's going to be the big thing to make

peace with now.

 

An interesting thing about making a gradual transition is that you really

notice how foods make you feel. Today I ate bagels. Mucky!

 

Anyway, tonight is the night. I'm going to run off and make salad and some

banana-cherry " ice cream " - just bananas and cherries and a dash of vanilla.

That reminds me: I would love any recipes for raw treats. E-mail your

favorites, anyone, please!

 

Tomorrow will be a 100% raw day.

Dani,

 

I agree with Mary Ann! Juicing is pure medicine and

balances the body with minerals and vitamins and it

totally brings me to the next level in my health.

 

You also may want to do some research on proper food

combining. This includes a few rules to help with

proper digestion and assimilation which will help with

cravings. Sometimes cravings are a sign of the liver

detoxifying also. I tend to have sweet cravings and

when this happens I eat a couple figs. It goes right

away and the figs are wonderful food.

 

Healthfood stores and organic foods are not always

healthy!

That's called a Saladacco, or spiral slicer. I got mine online from

some place I think called Home Markteplace or something like that.

It makes angel hair.

But when I was in Super Wal-Mart Friday night, I saw a machine that

was making " fettucine " out of a raw potato. So it would work on

jicama and diakon etc etc as well. Can't remember what it was

called, but it had one of those " As Seen on TV " signs on it.

Hey Mary Ann and Regina,

 

I find the idea of having to buy a juicer rather disheartening. Is it possible

to be healthy and happy on a raw foods diet without owning this piece of

equipment? I also have some reservations about food combining - in the old days

it was firmly believed by " experts " that if one wanted to do the then-extreme

thing of giving up meat, one had to carefully combine complimentary proteins in

order to stay out of the hospital. Of course, this was absurd. So I guess I

have this aversion to the idea of being that scientific about food, dating back

to the seventies! Do I just have to get over it?

 

I have been raw since last night. I am sleepy, dopey, cranky, hungry, and kinda

headachey. It feels exactly like fasting, even though I have been eating what I

think is plenty of good food. I wonder how long this will last. Every time I

feel like I want to order a big vegan pizza 'cause I'm so " hungry " I think, " Is

this really hunger, or is it something that *feels* like hunger just because my

stomach isn't full of pasta or bagels or tofu? " And then I think of your

enthusiasm for juice, Mary Ann, and your steadfast belief that juicing fills in

the gaps.

 

Thanks for all the support, everybody. If I make it through this rather

unpleasant phase I will have you all to thank for it.

Dani,

 

You absolutely do not need to juice to be raw. In fact I don't juice at

all. Though I do use a Vitamix or a powerful blender to prepare some

dishes. But that is not necessary either. Eating raw foods in their

natural state is perfectly fine and the best way to go in my opinion. It

purely depends who you talk to in the raw foods movement. Some believe

in juicing and others don't.

 

Also if you are hungry it means that you are not eating enough. You will

never get full eating low calorie foods like salads. You need to eat

either a whole lot of raw fruit or a lot of raw fat. Either way you will

feel full once you have ingested enough calories. You will have to count

calories and compare with how many calories you used to eat to what you

are consuming with raw foods. Because you can feel full much sooner with

raw foods because they are not dehydrated. Raw fruits and vegetables are

very high in water content. But you have to eat more by weight to get

enough calories in your diet. This is not so much the case with raw nuts

and seeds.

Hi Dani,

 

It's obviously up to you if you want to juice or not.

It's changed my life, that's all.

 

You feel the way you do when you eat raw because your

body is releasing toxins. This has been ongoing for

me for almost a year (but I have a very sick body-or I

should say " had a very sick body " ). I think you

should figure if you eat for health or weight or just

pure pleasure. I love food and have also gone thru

eating disorders in my younger years. Sickness forced

me to eat raw and in-turn I developed a love for

health and healthy foods.

 

Food combining is actually very simple once

implemented. Again it's a matter of why you choose to

eat raw.

I've been getting some amazing deals on organic produce shopping at a

local organic distibutor. They are wholesale but open to the public on

Saturndays, and they sell stuff by the box, bag and case.

 

For the depression I recommend watching your intake of sugars amd

stimulants. Also make sure you have a good source of tryptophane-rich

foods like hemp, sunflower and pumpkin seeds and sprouts and seed

milks, bee pollen, spirulina and chlorella. Tryptophane is the only

amino acid that can pass through the blood brain layer.

yes - get a good grater and a nice piece of hemp or linen about 2 feet

square....grate your fruits and veggies onto the cloth, pick up the

cloth full of veggies by the corners of the cloth, now twist wring and

squeeze the juice out of it

Thanks to all of you who have given me so much helpful advice over the past few

days! I have been raw for 3 days now, and feel great - I'm over the hungries,

and survived a wicked headache yesterday, and I think that was the worst of it.

My first grocery shopping trip post-conversion was indeed less expensive than in

the recent past, and I am amazed at what small amounts of food satisfy me. I

have even indulged in 2 melon-only dinners, inspired by the food combining

information given. I haven't had any cravings at all, 'though I am what you

would call a slave to chocolate, as well as a bread/pizza junkie. After 2 days

I lost the bloat that was making me look more like a harbour seal than like

" me " .

 

I don't think I would have taken the plunge without the lot of you - a gigantic

thank you. Although I haven't had much time to respond, I am keeping all the

information you provided in mind and will value any more that you send forth!

Hi everybody! I'm so glad to have found this group! I began

vegetarianism at the same time I started juicing vegetables, fruit and

wheatgrass. I started barely 3 weeks ago and I am amazed at how much

better I feel and how much quicker my brain works. I'm also so much

better at being present with people and being loving to others in

general. I have been taking anti-depressants for 7 years, and never felt

that great on them but was afraid to go off of them. (I did once, and

got almost suicidal) NOW I'm thinking that it'll be appropriate to go

off of them. I'm in no hurry, but I'm surprised to be getting there! I'm

feeling considerably less depressed. I didn't know that these

improvements were possible with this new diet!

 

I'm wondering if anyone has ideas on what to juice/eat that will

facilitate these qualities.

I am juicing about a half a beet a day to help cleanse my liver. (I had

a ruptured appendix for 5 days that they didn't diagnose until it was

almost too late- this was 20 years ago)

 

What I normally juice daily; 4 carrots, two apples, two oranges, two

celery stalks, 1 Tb size ginger, I/2 beet, 1 or 2 leaves of kale, a cup

size of broccoli, and a fist full of wheatgrass. Sometimes I add

cabbage, onion, leek, garlic. I drink this throughout the day. (I'm

eating no dairy or eggs)

 

Any suggestions, or a list of maladies and what to eat/juice for them?

Dear Regina,

 

When you give the command, " Stay positive! " , you not only guarantee

that Dani will tip over into the negative but she will lose control

and so she will never learn how to move herself between positive and

negative and back again.

 

It is a poisonous command which sounds so good.
