LOL Paula, you are a lucky girl !! I have to drive 50 miles into Dallas for one

place and even farther to the other place. Even the post office doesn't deliver

to my door ! lol I have to drive 15 miles to the post office to pick up packages

or mail them. The price of country living in the back woods of Texas. The

closest town to me only has only 3 red lights ! lol And 2 of those are new this

year ! LMAO

Re: FW: Red Devil Lye has been discontinued.

Red Devil comes in 18 oz containers and I think $4 a pound is quite expensive

for lye. I am sssssssssssoooooooooo glad I'm in Michigan and have my lye

delivered right to my door with no shipping cost :)

Paula .......... in Michigan

Diane,

Red Devil cost $4.00 for 32 ozs , right ? Ordering 40 pounds from Boyer

with the shipping to Texas cost a flat $80. So divide that and it cost $2.00

per pound. That is the exact cost of Red Devil if it cost $4.00 for a can.

Shipping to Ky might be cheaper then the shipping to Texas.

Sally,

Nope, the cost for Red Devil here is $4.00 for 18 ounces. It is very costly. I

am going to make a phone call tomorrow and see how much it will cost to have lye

shipped here.

Good idea Diane ! Some suppliers sell it as well, so keep that in mind for the

smaller amounts.

Paula's great! A few weeks back she generously met with me so I could pick

up some lye and other products I bought from her. Where else are you going

to find a vendor who is willing to meet you part of the way (literally) on the

delivery? Lucky for me, I live somewhat close by.

Thanks again, Paula.

I lived in a town smaller than that when I lived in Ky - we didn't have any

traffic lights except the blinking red & amber one at the corner of the main

street. The 'post office' was a tiny bit of counter space at the only store and

the fire chief was also the chief of police. The town closest to me now doesn't

deliver mail to your house if you live in 'town' - you have to have a PO box and

the only light in Ida is a red blinker a tithe 4 way stop

Read the ingredients on the label. It should say 100% sodium hydroxide

Paula .......... in Michigan

I'm in Lanett, AL. I'm thinking I found this at Walmart, but can't remember

for certain. I was leary of buying it because everyone said to watch out for

those that contained additives. This one worked fine. Well - let's just say

that whay needed improving was the " operator " (me), not the lye!

Some suppliers will let you come and pick up larger amounts too. A couple of

weeks ago I went to meet someone from out of town who wanted 20 pounds. When

they don't know the area, we decide on a meeting place near the expressway that

is easy for them to find their way back to the expressway. It's real easy for me

to meet them there because there are 3 expressways within 15 miles of my house.

LOL Paula, I think we both be country girls !!! Your town has ours beat ! lol

Down where we lived when I was a teen was all ranches and there was a bank there

to a teller thingy and do their banking then take off again !! It was called The

Rio Vista Fly in Cow Pasture Bank ! Now I call that Texas Country Chic !! lol my

father banked there until he died. No, he didn't have a small plane but some of

his friends did.

I don't think I could ever live in the city again. I lived in Memphis when we

If I got lost everytime I went to a supplier, I'd try to find it somewhere else

that I could easily get to especialy now that gas prices are so high. And if

you are willing to drive an hour to find me and give me some of your money, the

least I can do is make myself easy to find and it gives me an excuse to get out

of the house for a bit. On the 3rd Wed of every month some of us soapers get

together for lunch and to talk soap. The reason we chose to meet at Cabela's in

Dundee, MI is that it's right along the expressway (US-23) and when you get off

the e-way, you only have to make 2 turns and you're there. If anyone is going to

be in or near south-east Michigan or north-west Ohio, please come and join us !

We're just a little south of Ann Arbor, Michigan and about 10-12 miles north of

the Ohio line, not far from Toledo, Ohio. If you're closer to Detroit, I-94

would bring you to Ann Arbor and I-275 passes thru or near Livonia and connects

to I-94 . Our house is 6 or 7 miles west of I-75, about 10 miles east of US-23

and about 15 miles south of I-275 so I'm real close to all 3. Since I was born &

raised here in Monroe, I know most of the back roads in between and that's a

real blessing when you're trying to avoid road construction ! And we can alwasy

tell when there's a bad wreck on one of the e-ways when traffic suddenly jumps,

especially semi truck traffic and depending on what direction they are coming

from, we can figure out where the wreck is.

Both sets of my grand parents had farms, as did one grandmother's brother, and

3 of my uncles had or still have farms and 3 cousins also have farms now. When I

was little and at my grandparents, if they couldn't find me, everyone knew right

where I'd be - with what ever baby animals they had. Learned to drive a grain

truck and tractor years before I was old enough to have a driver's license.

There's a guy down the road from us that has a small plane and the run way is

along the edge of one of his fields. Never thought I'd be able to recognize what

small plane was flying over by the engine sound but everytime he flies over, I

can tell it's him. We aren't far from the county airport and there are always

lots of small planes over head. This airport is barely big enough to handle

private jets so most of their traffic is small planes.

Hi Paula,

We didn't have a farm but we did have the gardens for all the fresh veggies

and lots of fruit tress. Hardly bought much food from the grocery stores. Only

things like bread and ice cream , stuff like that. My father bred and raised

champion cutting horses and cattle. He was also a land developer amongst other

things. I love the country life ! I also like knowing exactly where my food

comes from and what is on it or in it.

Our best time on the ranch was during the foaling season. Every morning

before school during March and April it was my job to check the mare pasture to

see who had foaled during the night or who was close to throwing her foal. It

was like Christmas everyday. And the surprise was in seeing what coloring and

markings each baby had. Oh and if it was a filly or a horse colt. lol I favored

fillies.

I don't know about where you live, but I buy my lye from a chemical company

in Charlotte, NC,,,I get 55 pounds for less than 30.00... Check around and

see if that is available to you in your area. I pay .45 a pound for my lye

and also i pay .55 a pound for the potassium hydroxide as well.. and it also

comes in a 55 pound bag and seems like i paid .35 a pound for citric acid

which comes in a 50 pound bag... all this comes from the same company! I

can't find it any cheaper than that anywhere!!! it would be a start, all i

had to do was show my licenses for the state of SC to show that I used it

for soaping and I have no problems just calling and telling them i want a 55

pound bag of whatever! hope this helps some of you that can't get it except

in stores where you live!!!! Have a blessed day! Rhonda

that's less than what I pay but I don't have to pay shipping/delivery adn it's

delivered right to my door. I get it direct fram a chemical comapny too. I

didn't have to show my sales tax license or anything - just called and said I

got the number from another soap maker.
