Funny, when I went grocery shopping this week I noticed that Red Devil lye

was marked down to $2.00 for 18oz bottle so I bought all they had. I was

wondering why it was so cheap.

I have been working on a system to make lye with the ashes that come from

the wood burning stove in the winter. I think I am pretty close to the system

for me. I originally started

using wood ashes for tanning deer hides but once I started making soap I

thought why not use this lye solution to take my soapmaking all the way back to

the 19th century.....I haven't made a very good finished product yet but I

will keep you all posted.

You know, now that you mention it, they are going to start making

pseudoephedrine and other cold medications so they have to be purchased by

registering

your purchase with the pharmacist. This law has to do with the easy

production of methamphetamine.

It is slated to go into effect in the spring of 2006 if I remember correctly.

I heard this off another list so I called 800-228-4722 the number for

Reckitt-Benckiser, the manufacturer and confirmed it. Whatever is out

there on the shelf is it. They have already stopped making it.

It is IMPERATIVE that you call and lodge a complaint. I had a nice talk

with Customer Service and told them that without Lye there is NO SOAP!

They said that Red Devil Lye did not promote it for soap and there was

no recipe that they had to make soap with. I ask her why they were

destroying the businesses of thousands of soapers by stopping making it.

She said that sales were slow. I EMPHASIZED that NO LYE; NO SOAP!!!!!! I

told her that soap had been made with lye waaaay before the pioneers

did and WE NEED IT so she is going to (supposedly) give my name and

address to TPTB and I am supposed to get a response. (Dont hold your

breath folks!)

She did say that the more soapers who call, the better they will listen

so CALL THEIR 800 NUMBER 1-800-228-4722 and tell them we cant make soap

without lye and there IS NO SUBSTITUTE!!!!!

Off my soapbox.

Neysa - I haven't been able to find Red Devil lye in my area for ages. I'm new

to soaping, but I managed to find something called Roebic crystal drain opener.

It comes in a 2 lb plastic container. States that it is 100% sodium hydroxide

(caustic soda).

I truly think the only way this will be put back on the market is if we all

call. I called they took my name, address and email address. I told them

that we can not make soap with out the lye and it wasn't just one or two but

1000s. So if we all call. It just might work.

If that fails then check with your local pool supply companies. I think where

the problem lies is because so many counties are stopping the local sells of lye

because of the drug labs that use the lye to make illegal drugs. If the lye

supply dries up there is that one company that sells it 40 pounds at a time.

Many store will not carry it because it is a main ingredient needed to make

meth. That's the same reason it is getting so difficult to buy cold meds over

the counter. Many places you have to ask at the pharmacy counter for it and in

Oregon, you have to have a prescription/note from your Dr to buy it. I'm in

south-east Michigan and only 2 store in the county still carry lye. If I

couldn't buy it in bulk from a chemical company, I wouldn't be able to afford to

make soap - it's $4.29 plus 6% sales tax for an 18 oz. container.

You would think with all the Drug dealers and Soap makers they would be making

more of it rather than close there doors.

I wonder if the Gov. has anything to do with this. Im not currently a soap maker

but I wanted to start.

I hope they fix this problem.

What about wal mart that is where I got LYE the last time I needed it

for my drain. Just a thought.

The super WalMart here doesn't carry it. I called all the pool supply

companies within a 40 mile area for me, none of them carry sodium hydroxide

(caustic soda).

I hope that they figure something out. To have lye shipped to me will be

costly.

I am not aware of this, can you give more information? I'd rather buy it in

I should start reading the oldest messages first. Here's my answer on what

they're making with lye.

Diane,

Red Devil cost $4.00 for 32 ozs , right ? Ordering 40 pounds from Boyer with

the shipping to Texas cost a flat $80. So divide that and it cost $2.00 per

pound. That is the exact cost of Red Devil if it cost $4.00 for a can. Shipping

to Ky might be cheaper then the shipping to Texas.

Red Devil comes in 18 oz containers and I think $4 a pound is quite expensive

for lye. I am sssssssssssoooooooooo glad I'm in Michigan and have my lye

delivered right to my door with no shipping cost :)

I called as well and the girl I spoke with said she has only heard from one

other person who was a soaper. When you call the number, press 1 to speak

to a customer service person. Let them know you are a soaper. She said

they have already discontinued it, but they are going to pass on the

information to their marketing people. Truthfully, I purchase my lye in

bulk but I know there are several soapers who purchase in smaller

increments. If you guys want this back on the shelves, you need to be

calling this number to let them know you are out there. If not, they will

never hear your voice. Even if you buy your lye in bulk, call the number

anyway. You never know when you may go back as a hobbyist and need lye in

smaller increments!!

I'm in Lanett, AL. I'm thinking I found this at Walmart, but can't remember for

certain. I was leary of buying it because everyone said to watch out for those

that contained additives. This one worked fine. Well - let's just say that

whay needed improving was the " operator " (me), not the lye!

Hi Sally,

Lye is a hazmat material, and IF you can get a courier company to carry it,

there is extra charges

I believe its legal still to send 1kg via usps mail?

there are not always extra charges - it depends on the shipping company and the

amount shipped. I can mail 2 pounds and can ship up to 5 with the shipping

company I now use. I am working on getting an account with a company that will

allow me to ship up to 20 or 25 pounds with out any extra charges.

Hi Mary,

It is actually legal for UPS to carry 2 pounds per box of lye without having

any fees. There is some red tape I have to go thru here where I live. I have a

great source for the lye south of Dallas. When Boyer sends the lye the cost of

all the fees are included in the price of the lye when you buy it. And UPS can

carry as much as 300 something pounds of lye before they have to put a sticker

on their truck.
