Guest guest
Funny, when I went grocery shopping this week I noticed that Red Devil lye was marked down to $2.00 for 18oz bottle so I bought all they had. I was wondering why it was so cheap.
Guest guest
I have been working on a system to make lye with the ashes that come from the wood burning stove in the winter. I think I am pretty close to the system for me. I originally started using wood ashes for tanning deer hides but once I started making soap I thought why not use this lye solution to take my soapmaking all the way back to the 19th century.....I haven't made a very good finished product yet but I will keep you all posted. This law has to do with the easy production of methamphetamine. It is slated to go into effect in the spring of 2006 if I remember correctly. Guest guest
Neysa Dormish [neysa] I heard this off another list so I called 800-228-4722 the number for Reckitt-Benckiser, the manufacturer and confirmed it. Whatever is out there on the shelf is it. They have already stopped making it. It is IMPERATIVE that you call and lodge a complaint. I had a nice talk with Customer Service and told them that without Lye there is NO SOAP! They said that Red Devil Lye did not promote it for soap and there was no recipe that they had to make soap with. I ask her why they were destroying the businesses of thousands of soapers by stopping making it. She said that sales were slow. I EMPHASIZED that NO LYE; NO SOAP!!!!!! I told her that soap had been made with lye waaaay before the pioneers did and WE NEED IT so she is going to (supposedly) give my name and address to TPTB and I am supposed to get a response. Guest guest
I truly think the only way this will be put back on the market is if we all call. I called they took my name, address and email address. I told them that we can not make soap with out the lye and it wasn't just one or two but 1000s. So if we all call. It just might work. Guest guest
If that fails then check with your local pool supply companies. I think where the problem lies is because so many counties are stopping the local sells of lye because of the drug labs that use the lye to make illegal drugs. If the lye supply dries up there is that one company that sells it 40 pounds at a time. Sally Opening this week !!!! Apples , Woods and Berries ! Guest guest
Many store will not carry it because it is a main ingredient needed to make meth. That's the same reason it is getting so difficult to buy cold meds over the counter. Many places you have to ask at the pharmacy counter for it and in Oregon, you have to have a prescription/note from your Dr to buy it. I'm in south-east Michigan and only 2 store in the county still carry lye. If I couldn't buy it in bulk from a chemical company, I wouldn't be able to afford to make soap - it's $4.29 plus 6% sales tax for an 18 oz. container. Guest guest
I called as well and the girl I spoke with said she has only heard from one other person who was a soaper. When you call the number, press 1 to speak to a customer service person. Let them know you are a soaper. She said they have already discontinued it, but they are going to pass on the information to their marketing people. Truthfully, I purchase my lye in bulk but I know there are several soapers who purchase in smaller increments. If you guys want this back on the shelves, you need to be calling this number to let them know you are out there. If not, they will never hear your voice. Even if you buy your lye in bulk, call the number anyway. You never know when you may go back as a hobbyist and need lye in smaller increments!! Please call!!!! Guest guest
Hi Mary, It is actually legal for UPS to carry 2 pounds per box of lye without having any fees. There is some red tape I have to go thru here where I live. I have a great source for the lye south of Dallas.
