Toxic food meant for humans

I am beginning to wonder this myself. Being vegan I don't normally buy meat that is meant for human consumption, but the past couple weeks since the recall, I have been buying chicken leg quarters to cook up for my cats and dogs, as well as canned tuna/salmon/mackerel. My babies do eat all that, including the chicken skin and the brown rice cooked in the broth. I also feed them eggs from our own pet chickens because I KNOW that is safe. I decided to buy them ground beef for this week instead of chicken. I figured they'd enjoy the change, and they DO all like beef flavored cat food, after all. I just baked it in the oven, like a meat loaf, and broke it into pieces...no seasonings or additions or anything. Fed it this morning. My two dogs are crazy about it...they wolf food down so quick I don't know how they even taste it.... BUT....most of the cats sniffed it and then IGNORED it!!! I thought to myself the same as the writer below.......WHAT is wrong w/ this stuff that the cats won't eat?!?!?! It is meat intended for human consumption :-(

The previous week in Wallyworld, There was a large,

new section in the People section of the Food side

of the store. It was full of DISCOUNTED PET FOODS.

ALPO was one of the brands on the shelves. I was so

pissed off and hurt, due to our pets deaths,because of the tainted food,

I did not want to see all the tainted brands on the shelves.

FDA is coming by Wallyworlds and picking up the

returned products. Wonder what they are doing with it?

trying to find something our dogs and wolfs would

eat, I purchased the cooler sections, Plastic salami

like wrapped hamburger 20% fat for people. Dogs nor

wolfs would eat the stuff, raw or dry. Now thats scarey,

The hamburger is for people, I wonder what it has in it that the

wolfs can detect and humans can not?

The chicken hind quarters were tried by me also. The

dogs and wolfs would not eat the skin nor touch any

of the drippings, nor anything with the drippings

poured on them, cooked or raw. Now what are they putting on the

outside of the chicken skin? this stuff is for human consumption,

but the wild animals will not eat it. this is really scarey also.

I think the problem with the cats is that you cooked it. They really like and

need raw food.

Raw meat is also good for dogs including raw chicken. Their digestive systems

are much

different than ours and you don't have to worry about them getting sick from it

as long as

it's fresh. Feed it raw and see how much more they like it. Raw meat will also

have more

of the nutrients in it that they need.

I know that in the wild, dogs and cats obviously eat a BARF diet (bones and raw food) :-) However, the pet food in the cans is cooked and they certainly like that. They love the cooked chicken, and the pets I had before I started eating vegan in 1989 always loved our table scraps. I am sure what you say is 100% true about their digestive tracts, etc....and it would almost certainly extend their lives if they ate a more natural diet........but.....unless I raised my own meat, or had access to meat that was raised other than in a factory farm, w/o growth hormones and chemicals etc pumped into it, I would not want to give them any raw. Also, I had one dog who was previously pretty laid back, become extremely aggressive over a period of about two months that I was getting some raw soup bones at the grocery store and feeding them. I was told that the taste of blood in the meat was causing it, and while I can't say 100% whether that was true or not, I began boiling the bones before feeding. He got better. And because I do rescue and have a good number of mouths to feed at any given time, there is no way I could afford a constant flow of free range meat from a health food source or such! I do give them eggs from my own pet chickens that I raise in the backyard!! Obviously I hate the idea of supporting a factory farm at all, but, you sometimes you just have to weigh your choices in this imperfect world and life :-( My choice is to try and save and rehome as many abandoned and abused babies as I can, and find them homes where they can finally know love :-)

Since the dogfood dilemma continues to escalate, I am forwarding some

information for people so they can be informed of whay they buy for

their pets.

And my friend sent me this list a few months ago so I am posting it

for all.

How to grade your dog's food:

Start with a grade of 100:

1) For every listing of " by-product " , subtract 10 points

2) For every non-specific animal source ( " meat " or " poultry " , meat,

meal or fat) reference, subtract 10 points

3) If the food contains BHA, BHT, or ethoxyquin, subtract 10 points

4) For every grain " mill run " or non-specific grain source, subtract

5 points

5) If the same grain ingredient is used 2 or more times in the first

five ingredients (i.e. " ground brown rice " , " brewerâs rice " , " rice

flour " are all the same grain), subtract 5 points

6) If the protein sources are not meat meal and there are less than 2

meats in the top 3 ingredients, subtract 3 points

7) If it contains any artificial colorants, subtract 3 points

8 ) If it contains ground corn or whole grain corn, subtract 3 points

9) If corn is listed in the top 5 ingredients, subtract 2 more points

10) If the food contains any animal fat other than fish oil, subtract

2 points

11) If lamb is the only animal protein source (unless your dog is

allergic to other protein sources), subtract 2 points

12) If it contains soy or soybeans, subtract 2 points

13) If it contains wheat (unless you know that your dog isnât

allergic to wheat), subtract 2 points

14) If it contains beef (unless you know that your dog isnât allergic

to beef), subtract 1 point

15) If it contains salt, subtract 1 point

Extra Credit:

1) If any of the meat sources are organic, add 5 points

2) If the food is endorsed by any major breed group or nutritionist,

add 5 points

3) If the food is baked not extruded, add 5 points

4) If the food contains probiotics, add 3 points

5) If the food contains fruit, add 3 points

6) If the food contains vegetables (NOT corn or other grains), add 3

points

7) If the animal sources are hormone-free and antibiotic-free, add 2

points

8 ) If the food contains barley, add 2 points

9) If the food contains flax seed oil (not just the seeds), add 2

points

10) If the food contains oats or oatmeal, add 1 point

11) If the food contains sunflower oil, add 1 point

12) For every different specific animal protein source (other than

the first one; count " chicken " and " chicken meal " as only one protein

source, but " chicken " and " " as 2 different sources), add 1 point

13) If it contains glucosamine and chondroitin, add 1 point

14) If the vegetables have been tested for pesticides and are

pesticide-free, add 1 point

94-100+ = A 86-93 = B 78-85 = C 70-77 = D <70 = F
