Guest guest Posted April 9, 2007 Report Share Posted April 9, 2007 I am beginning to wonder this myself. Being vegan I don't normally buy meat that is meant for human consumption, but the past couple weeks since the recall, I have been buying chicken leg quarters to cook up for my cats and dogs, as well as canned tuna/salmon/mackerel. My babies do eat all that, including the chicken skin and the brown rice cooked in the broth. I also feed them eggs from our own pet chickens because I KNOW that is safe. I decided to buy them ground beef for this week instead of chicken. I figured they'd enjoy the change, and they DO all like beef flavored cat food, after all. I just baked it in the oven, like a meat loaf, and broke it into pieces...no seasonings or additions or anything. Fed it this morning. My two dogs are crazy about it...they wolf food down so quick I don't know how they even taste it.... BUT....most of the cats sniffed it and then IGNORED it!!! I thought to myself the same as the writer below.......WHAT is wrong w/ this stuff that the cats won't eat?!?!?! It is meat intended for human consumption :-( Tricia A dog is the only thing on earth that loves you more than he loves himself. - Raven The previous week in Wallyworld, There was a large, new section in the People section of the Food side of the store. It was full of DISCOUNTED PET FOODS. ALPO was one of the brands on the shelves. I was so pissed off and hurt, due to our pets deaths,because of the tainted food, I did not want to see all the tainted brands on the shelves. FDA is coming by Wallyworlds and picking up the returned products. Wonder what they are doing with it? trying to find something our dogs and wolfs would eat, I purchased the cooler sections, Plastic salami like wrapped hamburger 20% fat for people. Dogs nor wolfs would eat the stuff, raw or dry. Now thats scarey, The hamburger is for people, I wonder what it has in it that the wolfs can detect and humans can not? The chicken hind quarters were tried by me also. The dogs and wolfs would not eat the skin nor touch any of the drippings, nor anything with the drippings poured on them, cooked or raw. Now what are they putting on the outside of the chicken skin? this stuff is for human consumption, but the wild animals will not eat it. this is really scarey also. Thanks, Kelly Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Guest guest Posted April 10, 2007 Report Share Posted April 10, 2007 I think the problem with the cats is that you cooked it. They really like and need raw food. Raw meat is also good for dogs including raw chicken. Their digestive systems are much different than ours and you don't have to worry about them getting sick from it as long as it's fresh. Feed it raw and see how much more they like it. Raw meat will also have more of the nutrients in it that they need. , " PPawprint " <ppawprint wrote: > > > I am beginning to wonder this myself. Guest guest Posted April 10, 2007 Report Share Posted April 10, 2007 I know that in the wild, dogs and cats obviously eat a BARF diet (bones and raw food) :-) However, the pet food in the cans is cooked and they certainly like that. They love the cooked chicken, and the pets I had before I started eating vegan in 1989 always loved our table scraps. I am sure what you say is 100% true about their digestive tracts, etc....and it would almost certainly extend their lives if they ate a more natural diet........but.....unless I raised my own meat, or had access to meat that was raised other than in a factory farm, w/o growth hormones and chemicals etc pumped into it, I would not want to give them any raw. Also, I had one dog who was previously pretty laid back, become extremely aggressive over a period of about two months that I was getting some raw soup bones at the grocery store and feeding them. I was told that the taste of blood in the meat was causing it, and while I can't say 100% whether that was true or not, I began boiling the bones before feeding. He got better. And because I do rescue and have a good number of mouths to feed at any given time, there is no way I could afford a constant flow of free range meat from a health food source or such! I do give them eggs from my own pet chickens that I raise in the backyard!! Obviously I hate the idea of supporting a factory farm at all, but, you sometimes you just have to weigh your choices in this imperfect world and life :-( My choice is to try and save and rehome as many abandoned and abused babies as I can, and find them homes where they can finally know love :-) - november.gale Monday, April 09, 2007 9:33 PM Re: Toxic food meant for humans I think the problem with the cats is that you cooked it. Guest guest Posted April 10, 2007 Report Share Posted April 10, 2007 Since the dogfood dilemma continues to escalate, I am forwarding some information for people so they can be informed of whay they buy for their pets. You can read about dog food at this site. www.caninesincrisis.org And my friend sent me this list a few months ago so I am posting it for all. How to grade your dog's food: Start with a grade of 100: 1) For every listing of " by-product " , subtract 10 points 2) For every non-specific animal source ( " meat " or " poultry " , meat, meal or fat) reference, subtract 10 points 3) If the food contains BHA, BHT, or ethoxyquin, subtract 10 points 4) For every grain " mill run " or non-specific grain source, subtract 5 points 5) If the same grain ingredient is used 2 or more times in the first five ingredients (i.e. " ground brown rice " , " brewerâs rice " , " rice flour " are all the same grain), subtract 5 points 6) If the protein sources are not meat meal and there are less than 2 meats in the top 3 ingredients, subtract 3 points 7) If it contains any artificial colorants, subtract 3 points 8 ) If it contains ground corn or whole grain corn, subtract 3 points 9) If corn is listed in the top 5 ingredients, subtract 2 more points 10) If the food contains any animal fat other than fish oil, subtract 2 points 11) If lamb is the only animal protein source (unless your dog is allergic to other protein sources), subtract 2 points 12) If it contains soy or soybeans, subtract 2 points 13) If it contains wheat (unless you know that your dog isnât allergic to wheat), subtract 2 points 14) If it contains beef (unless you know that your dog isnât allergic to beef), subtract 1 point 15) If it contains salt, subtract 1 point Extra Credit: 1) If any of the meat sources are organic, add 5 points 2) If the food is endorsed by any major breed group or nutritionist, add 5 points 3) If the food is baked not extruded, add 5 points 4) If the food contains probiotics, add 3 points 5) If the food contains fruit, add 3 points 6) If the food contains vegetables (NOT corn or other grains), add 3 points 7) If the animal sources are hormone-free and antibiotic-free, add 2 points 8 ) If the food contains barley, add 2 points 9) If the food contains flax seed oil (not just the seeds), add 2 points 10) If the food contains oats or oatmeal, add 1 point 11) If the food contains sunflower oil, add 1 point 12) For every different specific animal protein source (other than the first one; count " chicken " and " chicken meal " as only one protein source, but " chicken " and " " as 2 different sources), add 1 point 13) If it contains glucosamine and chondroitin, add 1 point 14) If the vegetables have been tested for pesticides and are pesticide-free, add 1 point 94-100+ = A 86-93 = B 78-85 = C 70-77 = D <70 = F Dog Food scores: Alpo Prime Cuts / Score 81 C Artemis Large/Medium Breed Puppy / Score 114 A+ Authority Harvest Baked / Score 116 A+ Authority Harvest Baked Less Active / Score 93 B Beowulf Back to Basics / Score 101 A+ Bil-Jac Select / Score 68 F Blackwood 3000 Lamb and Rice / Score 83 C Blue Buffalo Chicken and Rice / Score 106 A+ Burns Chicken and Brown Rice / Score 107 A+ Canidae / Score 112 A+ Chicken Soup Senior / Score 115 A+ Diamond Maintenance / Score 64 F Diamond Lamb Meal & Rice / Score 92 B Diamond Large Breed 60+ Formula / Score 99 A Diamond Performance / Score 85 C Dick Van Patten's Natural Balance Ultra Premium / Score 122 A+ Dick Van Patten's Natural Balance Venison and Brown Rice / Score 106 A+ Dick Van Patten's Duck and Potato / Score 106 A+ EaglePack Holistic / Score 102 A+ Eukanuba Adult / Score 81 C Eukanuba Puppy / Score 79 C Flint River Senior / Score 101 A+ Foundations / Score 106 A+ Hund-n-Flocken Adult Dog (lamb) by Solid Gold / Score 93 B Iams Lamb Meal & Rice Formula Premium / Score 73 D Innova Dog / Score 114 A+ Innova Evo / Score 114 A+ Innova Large Breed Puppy / Score 122 A+ Kirkland Signature Chicken, Rice, and Vegetables / Score 110 A+ Member's Mark Chicken and Rice / Score 84 C Merrick Wilderness Blend / Score 127 A+ Nature's Recipe / Score 100 A Nature's Recipe Healthy Skin Venison and Rice / Score 116 A+ Nature's Variety Raw Instinct / Score 122 A+ Nutra Nuggets Super Premium Lamb Meal and Rice / Score 81 C Nutrience Junior Medium Breed Puppy / Score 101 A+ Nutrisource Lamb and Rice / Score 87 B Nutro Max Adult / Score 93 B Nutro Natural Choice Lamb and Rice / Score 98 A Nutro Natural Choice Large Breed Puppy / Score 87 B Nutro Natural Choice Puppy Wheat Free / Score 86 B Nutro Natural Choice Senior / Score 95 A Nutro Ultra Adult / Score 104 A+ Pet Gold Adult with Lamb & Rice / Score 23 F Premium Edge Chicken, Rice and Vegetables Adult Dry / Score 109 A+ Pro Nature Puppy / Score 80 C Pro Plan Sensitive Stomach / Score 94 A Purina Benful / Score 17 F Purina Dog / Score 62 F Purina Come-n-Get It / Score 16 F Purina One Large Breed Puppy / Score 62 F Royal Canin Boxer / Score 103 A+ Royal Canin Bulldog / Score 100 A+ Royal Canin Natural Blend Adult / Score 106 A+ Science Diet Advanced Protein Senior 7+ / Score 63 F Science Diet for Large Breed Puppies / Score 69 F Sensible Choice Chicken and Rice / Score 97 A Solid Gold / Score 99 A Summit / Score 99 A Timberwolf Organics Wild & Natural Dry / Score 120 A+ Wellness Super5 Mix Chicken / Score 110 A+ Wolfking Adult Dog (bison) by Solid Gold / Score 97 A Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Guest guest Posted April 10, 2007 Report Share Posted April 10, 2007 sounds good in theory but eukaneuba and iams were on the recall lists. - " MSSJG " <mssjg Tuesday, April 10, 2007 7:17 AM Re: Toxic food meant for humans Since the dogfood dilemma continues to escalate, I am forwarding some information for people so they can be informed of whay they buy for their pets. You can read about dog food at this site. www.caninesincrisis.org And my friend sent me this list a few months ago so I am posting it for all. How to grade your dog's food: Start with a grade of 100: 1) For every listing of " by-product " , subtract 10 points 2) For every non-specific animal source ( " meat " or " poultry " , meat, meal or fat) reference, subtract 10 points 3) If the food contains BHA, BHT, or ethoxyquin, subtract 10 points 4) For every grain " mill run " or non-specific grain source, subtract 5 points 5) If the same grain ingredient is used 2 or more times in the first five ingredients (i.e. " ground brown rice " , " brewerâs rice " , " rice flour " are all the same grain), subtract 5 points 6) If the protein sources are not meat meal and there are less than 2 meats in the top 3 ingredients, subtract 3 points 7) If it contains any artificial colorants, subtract 3 points 8 ) If it contains ground corn or whole grain corn, subtract 3 points 9) If corn is listed in the top 5 ingredients, subtract 2 more points 10) If the food contains any animal fat other than fish oil, subtract 2 points 11) If lamb is the only animal protein source (unless your dog is allergic to other protein sources), subtract 2 points 12) If it contains soy or soybeans, subtract 2 points 13) If it contains wheat (unless you know that your dog isnât allergic to wheat), subtract 2 points 14) If it contains beef (unless you know that your dog isnât allergic to beef), subtract 1 point 15) If it contains salt, subtract 1 point Extra Credit: 1) If any of the meat sources are organic, add 5 points 2) If the food is endorsed by any major breed group or nutritionist, add 5 points 3) If the food is baked not extruded, add 5 points 4) If the food contains probiotics, add 3 points 5) If the food contains fruit, add 3 points 6) If the food contains vegetables (NOT corn or other grains), add 3 points 7) If the animal sources are hormone-free and antibiotic-free, add 2 points 8 ) If the food contains barley, add 2 points 9) If the food contains flax seed oil (not just the seeds), add 2 points 10) If the food contains oats or oatmeal, add 1 point 11) If the food contains sunflower oil, add 1 point 12) For every different specific animal protein source (other than the first one; count " chicken " and " chicken meal " as only one protein source, but " chicken " and " " as 2 different sources), add 1 point 13) If it contains glucosamine and chondroitin, add 1 point 14) If the vegetables have been tested for pesticides and are pesticide-free, add 1 point 94-100+ = A 86-93 = B 78-85 = C 70-77 = D <70 = F Dog Food scores: Alpo Prime Cuts / Score 81 C Artemis Large/Medium Breed Puppy / Score 114 A+ Authority Harvest Baked / Score 116 A+ Authority Harvest Baked Less Active / Score 93 B Beowulf Back to Basics / Score 101 A+ Bil-Jac Select / Score 68 F Blackwood 3000 Lamb and Rice / Score 83 C Blue Buffalo Chicken and Rice / Score 106 A+ Burns Chicken and Brown Rice / Score 107 A+ Canidae / Score 112 A+ Chicken Soup Senior / Score 115 A+ Diamond Maintenance / Score 64 F Diamond Lamb Meal & Rice / Score 92 B Diamond Large Breed 60+ Formula / Score 99 A Diamond Performance / Score 85 C Dick Van Patten's Natural Balance Ultra Premium / Score 122 A+ Dick Van Patten's Natural Balance Venison and Brown Rice / Score 106 A+ Dick Van Patten's Duck and Potato / Score 106 A+ EaglePack Holistic / Score 102 A+ Eukanuba Adult / Score 81 C Eukanuba Puppy / Score 79 C Flint River Senior / Score 101 A+ Foundations / Score 106 A+ Hund-n-Flocken Adult Dog (lamb) by Solid Gold / Score 93 B Iams Lamb Meal & Rice Formula Premium / Score 73 D Innova Dog / Score 114 A+ Innova Evo / Score 114 A+ Innova Large Breed Puppy / Score 122 A+ Kirkland Signature Chicken, Rice, and Vegetables / Score 110 A+ Member's Mark Chicken and Rice / Score 84 C Merrick Wilderness Blend / Score 127 A+ Nature's Recipe / Score 100 A Nature's Recipe Healthy Skin Venison and Rice / Score 116 A+ Nature's Variety Raw Instinct / Score 122 A+ Nutra Nuggets Super Premium Lamb Meal and Rice / Score 81 C Nutrience Junior Medium Breed Puppy / Score 101 A+ Nutrisource Lamb and Rice / Score 87 B Nutro Max Adult / Score 93 B Nutro Natural Choice Lamb and Rice / Score 98 A Nutro Natural Choice Large Breed Puppy / Score 87 B Nutro Natural Choice Puppy Wheat Free / Score 86 B Nutro Natural Choice Senior / Score 95 A Nutro Ultra Adult / Score 104 A+ Pet Gold Adult with Lamb & Rice / Score 23 F Premium Edge Chicken, Rice and Vegetables Adult Dry / Score 109 A+ Pro Nature Puppy / Score 80 C Pro Plan Sensitive Stomach / Score 94 A Purina Benful / Score 17 F Purina Dog / Score 62 F Purina Come-n-Get It / Score 16 F Purina One Large Breed Puppy / Score 62 F Royal Canin Boxer / Score 103 A+ Royal Canin Bulldog / Score 100 A+ Royal Canin Natural Blend Adult / Score 106 A+ Science Diet Advanced Protein Senior 7+ / Score 63 F Science Diet for Large Breed Puppies / Score 69 F Sensible Choice Chicken and Rice / Score 97 A Solid Gold / Score 99 A Summit / Score 99 A Timberwolf Organics Wild & Natural Dry / Score 120 A+ Wellness Super5 Mix Chicken / Score 110 A+ Wolfking Adult Dog (bison) by Solid Gold / Score 97 A «¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤» § - PULSE ON WORLD HEALTH CONSPIRACIES! § Subscribe:......... - «¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤» Other like groups: MedicalConspiracies Subscribe: MedicalConspiracies- Post message: MedicalConspiracies List owner: MedicalConspiracies-owner «¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤» 1400 Member Group: MedicalConspiracies (One Word)at Google groups: http://groups.google.comMedicalConspiracies Post message: MedicalConspiracies (AT) googl (DOT) com Subscribe: MedicalConspiracies- (AT) googl (DOT) com «¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤» Any information here in is for educational purpose only, it may be news related, purely speculation or someone's opinion. Guest guest Posted April 10, 2007 Report Share Posted April 10, 2007 Thanks Sharon.. I wish that you could...the world sure needs more caring rescue people!!!.... believe me, it can be heartbreaking at times, but it is VERY rewarding :-)))))) - SHARON JAGGER Tuesday, April 10, 2007 1:37 PM Re: Re: Toxic food meant for humans bless you Amy for being a rescue mom. If I had the room I would do that too. - Amy G Dalin Tuesday, April 10, 2007 6:52 AM Re: Re: Toxic food meant for humans I know that in the wild, dogs and cats obviously eat a BARF diet (bones and raw food) :-) However, the pet food in the cans is cooked and they certainly like that. They love the cooked chicken, and the pets I had before I started eating vegan in 1989 always loved our table scraps. I am sure what you say is 100% true about their digestive tracts, etc....and it would almost certainly extend their lives if they ate a more natural diet........but.....unless I raised my own meat, or had access to meat that was raised other than in a factory farm, w/o growth hormones and chemicals etc pumped into it, I would not want to give them any raw. Also, I had one dog who was previously pretty laid back, become extremely aggressive over a period of about two months that I was getting some raw soup bones at the grocery store and feeding them. I was told that the taste of blood in the meat was causing it, and while I can't say 100% whether that was true or not, I began boiling the bones before feeding. He got better. And because I do rescue and have a good number of mouths to feed at any given time, there is no way I could afford a constant flow of free range meat from a health food source or such! I do give them eggs from my own pet chickens that I raise in the backyard!! Obviously I hate the idea of supporting a factory farm at all, but, you sometimes you just have to weigh your choices in this imperfect world and life :-( My choice is to try and save and rehome as many abandoned and abused babies as I can, and find them homes where they can finally know love :-) - november.gale Monday, April 09, 2007 9:33 PM Re: Toxic food meant for humans I think the problem with the cats is that you cooked it. They really like and need raw food. Raw meat is also good for dogs including raw chicken. Their digestive systems are much different than ours and you don't have to worry about them getting sick from it as long as it's fresh. Feed it raw and see how much more they like it. Raw meat will also have more of the nutrients in it that they need. , "PPawprint" <ppawprint wrote:>> > I am beginning to wonder this myself. Being vegan I don't normally buy meat that is meant for human consumption, but the past couple weeks since the recall, I have been buying chicken leg quarters to cook up for my cats and dogs, as well as canned tuna/salmon/mackerel. My babies do eat all that, including the chicken skin and the brown rice cooked in the broth. I also feed them eggs from our own pet chickens because I KNOW that is safe. I decided to buy them ground beef for this week instead of chicken. I figured they'd enjoy the change, and they DO all like beef flavored cat food, after all. I just baked it in the oven, like a meat loaf, and broke it into pieces...no seasonings or additions or anything. Fed it this morning. My two dogs are crazy about it...they wolf food down so quick I don't know how they even taste it.... BUT....most of the cats sniffed it and then IGNORED it!!! I thought to myself the same as the writer below.......WHAT is wrong w/ this stuff that the cats won't eat?!?!?! Guest guest Posted April 11, 2007 Report Share Posted April 11, 2007 I feed my dogs prey model raw, and have done so for over 2 years. I researched raw diets for well over 4 years before I switched. I also do rescue and have adopted many dogs over the years. Every single dog that comes into my home gets raw food, and most of them are fortunate enough to get raw fed when they leave, too. *NEVER*, never, never give your dogs, or cats, *COOKED* bones! This includes boiling and smoking. This can cause splintering and can kill your animal. My family had a Dachshund years ago that got into cooked bones, and died because of it. And while you're at it, stay away from rawhide products, they can gum up and block the intestines. There is no reason why you can't find natural options that are affordable. My dogs eat organic and natural and it doesn't cost me much more.I feed my family organic foods, so naturally my dogs get it as well. We're not vegetarian, but we limit our meat consumption (we don't eat beef, and only organic chicken/turkey, and grass fed organic Bison). I don't support factory farms either. I have a garden and try to grow all my family's produce, but when I don't have it, I buy from local organic farmers. The " blood thirsty " myth is simply not true. There are many reasons as to why this could have happened, one of them being a painful tooth...soup bones are horrible for teeth, even on a big dog! He could have had a piece stuck somewhere... Please go here and read why it's not true (too long to post here): http://rawfed.com/myths/bloodthirsty.html While you're at it, please read the other myths about raw feeding here: http://www.rawfed.com/myths/index.html I completely understand you're reason for not being able to afford to feed all of the mouths (my mom has 23 at the moment, I only have 4), I do hope you are at least feeding them an acceptable kibble. However, there are a lot of people out there that rescue, have 20+ dogs, and still find a way to feed them raw....it's what is best for them. Kellie I know that in the wild, dogs and cats obviously eat a BARF diet (bones and raw food) :-) However, the pet food in the cans is cooked and they certainly like that. They love the cooked chicken, and the pets I had before I started eating vegan in 1989 always loved our table scraps. Guest guest Posted April 12, 2007 Report Share Posted April 12, 2007 I have found that every reply from you starts with " sounds good in theory " ! It is meant to be helpful. I also posted a web site so you could read about products like mighty dog, Iams, and eukanuba, and how bad they are for your pets! Here is another web site with very good information for pet owners, www.dogfoodproject.com if you take time to read it before you reply with " sounds good in theory " you might learn something too! I simply thought if people have large dogs like myself, that feed them walmart dog food, which I do not and never have, it might be easier for them to find a quality food that is and has not been on the recall list. I am not trying to start an argument every time I post, or be a know it all. I am trying to help people find alternatives to the pet problem that is occuring right now. > > sounds good in theory but eukaneuba and iams were on the recall lists. > > - > " MSSJG " <mssjg > > Tuesday, April 10, 2007 7:17 AM > Re: Toxic food meant for humans > > > Since the dogfood dilemma continues to escalate, I am forwarding some > information for people so they can be informed of whay they buy for > their pets. > > You can read about dog food at this site. www.caninesincrisis.org > And my friend sent me this list a few months ago so I am posting it > for all. > > How to grade your dog's food: > Start with a grade of 100: > 1) For every listing of " by-product " , subtract 10 points > 2) For every non-specific animal source ( " meat " or " poultry " , meat, > meal or fat) reference, subtract 10 points > 3) If the food contains BHA, BHT, or ethoxyquin, subtract 10 points > 4) For every grain " mill run " or non-specific grain source, subtract > 5 points > 5) If the same grain ingredient is used 2 or more times in the first > five ingredients (i.e. " ground brown rice " , " brewerâs rice " , " rice > flour " are all the same grain), subtract 5 points > 6) If the protein sources are not meat meal and there are less than 2 > meats in the top 3 ingredients, subtract 3 points > 7) If it contains any artificial colorants, subtract 3 points > 8 ) If it contains ground corn or whole grain corn, subtract 3 points > 9) If corn is listed in the top 5 ingredients, subtract 2 more points > 10) If the food contains any animal fat other than fish oil, subtract > 2 points > 11) If lamb is the only animal protein source (unless your dog is > allergic to other protein sources), subtract 2 points > 12) If it contains soy or soybeans, subtract 2 points > 13) If it contains wheat (unless you know that your dog isnât > allergic to wheat), subtract 2 points > 14) If it contains beef (unless you know that your dog isnât allergic > to beef), subtract 1 point > 15) If it contains salt, subtract 1 point > Extra Credit: > 1) If any of the meat sources are organic, add 5 points > 2) If the food is endorsed by any major breed group or nutritionist, > add 5 points > 3) If the food is baked not extruded, add 5 points > 4) If the food contains probiotics, add 3 points > 5) If the food contains fruit, add 3 points > 6) If the food contains vegetables (NOT corn or other grains), add 3 > points > 7) If the animal sources are hormone-free and antibiotic-free, add 2 > points > 8 ) If the food contains barley, add 2 points > 9) If the food contains flax seed oil (not just the seeds), add 2 > points > 10) If the food contains oats or oatmeal, add 1 point > 11) If the food contains sunflower oil, add 1 point > 12) For every different specific animal protein source (other than > the first one; Guest guest Posted April 12, 2007 Report Share Posted April 12, 2007 lol...oh I dont think they all start with that... this one didnt.. grin. I hate rash generalizations too. - " MSSJG " <mssjg Wednesday, April 11, 2007 5:57 PM Re: Toxic food meant for humans I have found that every reply from you starts with " sounds good in theory " ! It is meant to be helpful. I also posted a web site so you could read about products like mighty dog, Iams, and eukanuba, and how bad they are for your pets! Here is another web site with very good information for pet owners, www.dogfoodproject.com if you take time to read it before you reply with " sounds good in theory " you might learn something too! I simply thought if people have large dogs like myself, that feed them walmart dog food, which I do not and never have, it might be easier for them to find a quality food that is and has not been on the recall list. I am not trying to start an argument every time I post, or be a know it all. I am trying to help people find alternatives to the pet problem that is occuring right now. > > sounds good in theory but eukaneuba and iams were on the recall lists. > > - > " MSSJG " <mssjg > > Tuesday, April 10, 2007 7:17 AM > Re: Toxic food meant for humans > > > Since the dogfood dilemma continues to escalate, I am forwarding some > information for people so they can be informed of whay they buy for > their pets. > > You can read about dog food at this site. www.caninesincrisis.org > And my friend sent me this list a few months ago so I am posting it > for all. > > How to grade your dog's food: > Start with a grade of 100: > 1) For every listing of " by-product " , subtract 10 points > 2) For every non-specific animal source ( " meat " or " poultry " , meat, > meal or fat) reference, subtract 10 points > 3) If the food contains BHA, BHT, or ethoxyquin, subtract 10 points > 4) For every grain " mill run " or non-specific grain source, subtract > 5 points > 5) If the same grain ingredient is used 2 or more times in the first > five ingredients (i.e. " ground brown rice " , " brewerâs rice " , " rice > flour " are all the same grain), subtract 5 points > 6) If the protein sources are not meat meal and there are less than 2 > meats in the top 3 ingredients, subtract 3 points > 7) If it contains any artificial colorants, subtract 3 points > 8 ) If it contains ground corn or whole grain corn, subtract 3 points > 9) If corn is listed in the top 5 ingredients, subtract 2 more points > 10) If the food contains any animal fat other than fish oil, subtract > 2 points > 11) If lamb is the only animal protein source (unless your dog is > allergic to other protein sources), subtract 2 points > 12) If it contains soy or soybeans, subtract 2 points > 13) If it contains wheat (unless you know that your dog isnât > allergic to wheat), subtract 2 points > 14) If it contains beef (unless you know that your dog isnât allergic > to beef), subtract 1 point > 15) If it contains salt, subtract 1 point > Extra Credit: > 1) If any of the meat sources are organic, add 5 points > 2) If the food is endorsed by any major breed group or nutritionist, > add 5 points > 3) If the food is baked not extruded, add 5 points > 4) If the food contains probiotics, add 3 points > 5) If the food contains fruit, add 3 points > 6) If the food contains vegetables (NOT corn or other grains), add 3 > points > 7) If the animal sources are hormone-free and antibiotic-free, add 2 > points > 8 ) If the food contains barley, add 2 points > 9) If the food contains flax seed oil (not just the seeds), add 2 > points > 10) If the food contains oats or oatmeal, add 1 point > 11) If the food contains sunflower oil, add 1 point > 12) For every different specific animal protein source (other than > the first one;
