Hi Sandy, thanks for the advice.

I have NAV already installed on my computer, just didn't know exactly

how it worked. Every so often it asks if I want to update and I'd

just click no. I won't be doing that anymore.

Hi Deonia, thanks for the welcome and I appreciate the response. I

guess I kinda jumped the gun because while I was writing that

response, my question had already been addressed by Helen.

Since you volunteered :-) I do have a couple of questions. Would you

(or anyone here), know of a good resource for purchasing color

applicator bottles? The ones with the little red tops. And when is it

appropriate (safe) to use products with eo's in plastic containers?

selket, Just 'cause I volunteered don't mean I know what I'lm talking 'bout!

LOL Really Honey, just teasing a bit. Can't help ya with tha bottles but I

do know that all EO's should be stored in brown ( or dark colored) glass

bottles with tops as heat and light will ruin them eventually. I even keep my

dark bottles in a closet for optimal coolness and darkness. My rule of thimb

is, when working with straight essential oils i, is never to use plastic of

any kind. Only glass or SS. And never leave the dropper applicator in the

bottle either as the " fumes " will deteriorate the rubber cap and adulterate

the EO. There are jusst so many ways to ruin eo's that you can't be too

carefull when handling them.

I know there are more qualified people on this list that will give you more

info than I can but those are the important things to me . HTH's, Deonia '-)

Well D, if you don't know, then you are doing a good job of fooling

me ;-)

I found out the hard way about putting eo mixtures in plastic. I

mixed up a " hair spritz " (jojoba, wheatgerm and pink grapefruit) and

everyday I would see a residue at the bottom of the bottle. I

eventually figured out that it was the plastic dissolving.

Thanks for the info.

Hello, I thought I should introduce myself, since I just signed up for your group today. My name is Janet and I am married with 3 little children. Joey is 7, Ben 5 and Alyssa 4. Both my boys are autistic. I have always been interested in natural medicine and health. I am inspired by my children to work harder and learn as much as I can everyday. One day I hope to become a master herbalist. I would be happy to answer any questions you have about me or my family, and look forward to learning and growing with you all.

Thank you Ann. Benjamin is low functioning and was non-verbal. He told me "I love you mommy" very clearly 2 weeks ago, and I stood there with my mouth hanging open and told him I know you do - LOL! For once mommy was just about speechless :-)

Sorry, I was trying to send this about helping children with Autism. I

had been looking for it so long and thinking about it I didn't realize

it might not communicate how I sent it. It's not an ad, it's just

people that have success and might be able to help you help your kids.

Aussie-land for a year out of it too.

I am really happy at where I am. Just stressed to the max alot

though. My program this year is about 1200 hours of in classroom and

a few other things, but then I also have student clinic etc, plus my

B.As. work on top of it. (Too top it all off, I have IBS which I am

working alot with right now. I am seeing a pretty good D.TCM, which

seems to be working out though).

You studied here in Canada but you are now in the US?

Take care,

Eric :)

Hi Eric,

I have been having a few problems with IBS myself but it has improved the last few months. What a busy schedule you have! I would have more than ibs with that kind of agenda. I have sent the article on IBS in case you weren't here when I sent it last.

Cheers, Marilyn

I.B.S. - IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME

I.B.S. affects more than 80 million Americans, mostly women between 25-45 years old. Symptoms include alternating constipation and diarrhea, abdominal pain and pressure, and gas. I.B.S. is linked to factors like food sensitivities, PMS or stress. Grains rich in gluten (a gelatinous protein), like wheat, rye, barley and oats, are common culprits. Left untreated, I.B.S. can cause more serious problems later — including colon cancer, which claimed the lives of 46,600 people in 1997. Colon cancer is clearly linked to a high fat, low fiber diet with few fresh fruits and vegetables. Early symptoms include altered bowel habits, blood in the stool or rectal bleeding. If your digestive health has gone awry, don't ignore it! In severe cases, ulcerous lesions line the sides of the colon (ulcerativecolitis). Natural therapies are effective and reduce the need for drugs. Many sufferers see dramatic results. Diet changes are a must. Healing herbs and supplements will not work without diet changes. If there is an appendicitis-like sharp pain, seek medical help immediately. Symptoms include weakness, lethargy and fatigue, abdominal cramps, distention and pain (relieved by bowel movements), recurrent constipation, usually alternating with bloody diarrhea, rectal hemorrhoids, fistulas and abcesses, mucous in the stool, dehydration and mineral loss, unhealthy weight loss with abdominal distention.

Natural Healing Tips For I.B.S.

Clean up your diet: Avoid nuts, seeds, dairy and citrus while healing. Cut back on saturated fat as much as possible. Eliminate refined sugars, sorbitol, wheat foods and spicy foods. Cut out gluten grains like wheat, rye, barley and oats. Try instead breads or cereals made from spelt, rice, amaranth and quinoa, which are available at health food stores.

Add super foods to your diet daily. Try Crystal Star CHO-LO FIBER TONE drink at bedtime for 2 weeks.

Switch to green or black tea. Coffee aggravates I.B.S. symptoms!

Eat small meals frequently - NO LARGE MEALS.

Try dairy-free acidophilus. Dairy products are clogging and hard to digest. Try Dr. Dophilus

Aloe vera juice before meals helps heal the colon, reduces inflammation, and promotes regular bowel movements, especially if there is chronic constipation. I like AloeLife’s aloe gold, 2 tsp. with meals.

Clinical studies show peppermint can reduce I.B.S. symptoms. In one study of 18 patients, 16 reported feeling significantly better taking a peppermint oil supplement. Peppermint has long been a folk remedy for gas, a common problem in I.B.S. sufferers. I find peppermint herb, rich involatile oils, is as effective as peppermint oil. I recommend a broad spectrum herbal combination with peppermint and anti-inflammatory herbs like slippery elm and wild yam. Consider Crystal Star's BLW-TONE™ caps, 2 caps, 3 times daily. Also, chewing on mint leaves after meals will relax bowel spasms.

Add a psyllium-free fiber rich herbal combination to stimulate your colon. This will help push waste through the colon as well as recondition it. AloeLife's fiber mate is a good choice.

Effective anti-spasmodics are Crystal Star RELAX CAPS. Helpful: Apply a warm ginger compress to the spine and stomach.

Soothe intestines with chamomile tea, 4 cups daily.

Do not take aspirin.

Avoid antacids.

Practice relaxation techniques.

I have known many people with I.B.S. who are now symptom free and healthier than ever after using these types of natural therapies. So, if you have the disease, start today to improve your intestinal health.

Hi Marilyn,

Sorry to here that you have been some problems with IBS. I have been

dealing IBS for about 8 years in some way shape or form. I have seen

doctors from 4 countries and so many specialists I dont care to

count anymore (including licensed naturopaths ND). Honestly, both

naturopaths I saw were fairly useless. There atempts were whole

hearted and good intended (and I know work for some people) but did

nothing for me. They also had me on a sprouted diet. I have also

followed hypoallergenic gutinous diets as well (which is similar).

Since then I have read tons of books, met and networked with other

people with IBS, have visited with therapists from a huge range of

modalities, and pretty much researched the heck out of it.

How are you going about treating yours? What do you think is the

cause?

About the following article. I disagree with about half or more. At

first I thought I wouldnt say anything, but I am going to. I think

people with IBS are really mis-informed sometimes, due to the fact

that the term IBS is a label for a set of symptoms, not a term for

the cause. Ie, people with IBS may have similar symptoms but not

nessicarily the same cause. Doctors like to generalize in treatments

as well, which makes things even more comlicated.

About the following article ... read bellow.

I can agree with this to some degree. Stress, PMS, affect people

with IBS but in no way are linked to the cause for 99.9 percent of

people. Stress will affect the weakest part of the body in anyone.

Anxiety is a huge symptom for most people with IBS, but this is

something that devolopes after the onset of IBS. In chinese medicine

this is linked with the Liver. An under functioning Liver (not

nessesarily the physical liver but the Liver energy) can cause

stagnation of Ki/Chi which then under feeds the pancrease/digestion

of the body. Also the choppy ki/chi in the body causes frequent

anxiety.

A gluetn allergy intolerance is actually Celiac Disease " causes

changes in the intestine that result in malabsorption " - Merck

Manual. A certain amount of gluten intolerance may be seen to some

degree in IBS, but in my opinion again is NOT the cause. Lots of

research has been done in this area, such as the " Specific

Carbohydrate Diet " or the " Element diet " concerning " predigested "

sugars. But much of the reseach is directed to Inflamitory Bowel

Diseases, which should not be confused with IBS (in which there is

NO inflamation in the colon, or small intestines!).

Cutting out glutens can be a step towards feeling better, but for

most IBS suffers, it is not the cause of the body imbalance.

Left untreated, I.B.S

which

vegetables.

A big huge disagree here. There is no evidence supporting this

speculation. IBS is not related to colon cancer. Bad diet is related

to colon cancer. IBS can or cannot be cause by bad diet. I know

personally over 20 people with IBS that I keep in contact on a

weekly basis, and more than half are ideal weight/hight and eat a

good diet and practice good dietary habits. Also to note, is that

about 90% have tried a gluten free diet (for more than a year) with

little or no success.

Early

> symptoms include altered bowel habits, blood in the stool or

rectal bleeding.

Again, this is not true. Blood in the stools is not a sign of IBS.

Unless this blood is from hemmroids, which is another common symptom

in IBS. Even then, any kind of bleeding is usually only in extreme

cases and not a year round kind of thing. The hemmroids is a result

of extreame amounts of " altered bowel habits " and the

spleen/pancrease un-able to hold the blood properly in the body

causing prolase of organs and blood in general. (Ie, most people

with IBS have cold hands and feet, some form of hemmroids, and

sometimes minor forms or major organ prolapes).

> If your digestive health has gone awry, don't ignore it! In

severe cases,

Again, colitis is not IBS, but rather a form of Inflamatory Bowel

Disease.

Healing herbs

For once, I agree. Changing diet is a big must. But research all of

your diet options before you agree to the first " IBS " diet that you

find.

> Natural Healing Tips For I.B.S.

I agree with some of the tips, but would not be the ones I would

give to people diagnosed with IBS. Especially because not all IBS is

not caused by the same thing.

Ive gotta head to bed now, but Ill post another time my own

recomendations for IBS treatment later :)

I hope this has been informative for some people. Look around on the

Hi Eric!

I am also an IBS sufferer and incidently I currently live in Japan

(Nagoya area). I have found lots of help from following practices

like this artical suggests. Living in Japan where gluten products

are not mainstay makes it rather easy to get away from the

traditional Western diet. Both my children and I have had much

benefit on a more eastern diet. It is interesting that celiac

disease is almost unheard of in Japan. Hmmm am I hearing correctly

from your post that you have not benefitted from a gluetin free

diet? If so, you are the first person I have ever heard of that has

not gotton a measurable benefit from being off gluetin products.

Have you been able to ascertain what is the cause of your

inflamatory response? If your chronic inflamation is not caused by

gluetin it must be caused by something else. Have you tried natural

anti-inflamatories?

Cindy

Hi Cindy,

Yeah, I also lived in Nagoya (and kasugai and seto-shi) and

hopefully will be heading back there after this summer for a few

more years.

Yes, some people find a certain amount of relief in a non-gluten

diet, but they still have IBS. Actually I am getting alot better,

and at this rate, should be generally ok by another year or so. I am

using chinese herbs and shiatsu on a daily basis.

>Have you been able to ascertain what is the cause of your

> inflamatory response? If your chronic inflamation is not caused by

There is no inflamation. If there is an inflamation response, you

have Inflamatory Bowel Disease (ie Colitis or Chrons) not IBS.

Do I know the cause for my IBS? Yes, more or less. But I find it

fairly un-explainable in Allopathic theory or terms. I study western

chem. and bio-chem, pathology etc, but I dont find alot of help from

it. I find Traditional Japanese Theroy and TCM do me much better off

in this kind of thing. Something that is chronic or re-occuring, I

have had much better results with Traditional stuff, which doesnt

treat the illness, but the person as a whole to put there body back

in Balance.

Anyways, have you seen a Japanese accupuncturist before? I know a

good one in Nagoya (who speaks english too ;) that I could probably

get a discount.

Intrestting to note, that other countries around the world that have

a high-residence diet (whole grains, veggies, fruits, legumes and

sprouts), which is based off of whole grain, rarely have IBS or

Diverticulosis. Celiac Disease is a very under diagnosed condition

anywhere in world, but have been poping up in Japan like crazy (IBS

too), due to the fact of how popular " pan " is becoming with younger

people. Which Im sure you know is nasty stuff.

Anyways, I gotta run, but id love to chat later.

Take care,

Eric ;)

PS Ever seen a Japanese GI? I laughted so hard cause I was so

nervous when they did all the " tests " again in Japan, that I got it

free :)

There are Naturopaths and there are Naturopaths. Not all are equal by a long shot. :)

IBS should be able to be handled terminatedly within 3 months. In some instances, within 3 weeks. The stats of my patients fall within this range.

Eric writes,

"but Ill post another time my own recommendations for IBS treatment later :)

Dear Eric,

Thanks for informing me of all that valuable information, I really appreciate it.

I am looking forward to the recommendations! :) I can't seem to shake the diarrhea which both me and my husband have.

It has been over a year now. I no longer get gas and cramping like at first though. I have never been diagnosed with IBS before but have this annoying constant D. I had several stool tests done and finally they picked up a protozoan. They said it could have been caused by drinking water or contaminated stool from somewhere.

We both went on medication to kill this and my husband got quite sick on it but finished it anyway. It helped a little. I should say that we had both been on the Atkins diet which is high in fats and low in carb's and fiber and no bread for almost 3 years. We went off the diet 6 months ago and now that we started a 3 months ago eating bread again ... we are a lot better.

Yet for no reason suddenly the D is back again after a day or two of normal bm's. It does get very wearisome though. I personally think it was a result of the Atkins diet of high fats and being on it too long. I am also interested in your opinion on Lotronex for D. We cannot get it in Canada but others that can get it swear by it!

Sincerely,

Marilyn

Sounds like you have worms, which I understand are detectable in only certain stages. I had a friend who suffered for two years before seeking herbal help and getting relief. She picked them up while teaching in Africa. Have you tried talking to Doc?

What you have sounds like a parasite, rather than IBS. Have you ever

done a parasite cleanse before? Are you fairly healthy or deficent

in general? The Atkins diet can be a dangeous thing at times. Its

intresting that both you are your husband both have it, which would

point to again, a parasite, not IBS.

You can either ask Doc, about it, or I can give you some advice on

eatting, and a good cleansing plan to get rid of parasites. There

are different herbal and diet combinations, but which one you do,

really depends on your body condition, your consitution, symptoms

etc.

Symptoms first ;)

1.(Lack of cooling) Fresh-red cheeks and tonuge, freguent thist,

tidal or afternoon fevers, night sweats, restlessness.

2. (Deficient and cold nature) Cold hands and feet, pale face and

pale puffy tongue, weak, soft voice, low life-spark, and fatigue.

3. (Very deficient person) Thin, frial, weak intoverted, pale, and

weak voice

4. (Heat signs.... similar but different from #1) red face and

tongue, aversion to heat, desire for large amounts of water or

really cold water, frequent constipation, dark yellow urine, foul-

smelling breath and stools.

5. (Robust person with cold nature) Pale face and tongue, aversion

to cold, dislike of cold drinks, lack of thirst, clear water-like

urine.

Like wise there are 5 general treatment paths. Each you modify

slightly to meet your own needs. Sorry, I just dont have time to

type all 5, but if you wanna private message me, or post here, then

ill send info about that treatmemt path.

I tried to make these as simple as possible for this post. The

program is

based off of Naturopathic medicine, and chinese medicine from Paul

Pitchford and Dr. Suzanne Shaw that I studied at College when

studying wholistic nutrition and chinese medicine. Its pretty

effective.

Best of health to you,

Eric :)

Hi Marilyn,

If you have parisites Doc's intestinal cleanse #1 will take care of it, however it shouldn't be used if you have IBS. The recipe is in the files, but I think you might want to call Doc and discuss it w/ him when he gets back.

We read the categories but don't fit into any of those. Our health is pretty good over all otherwise except that I have the beginning of Osteoporosis. It very well might be a parasite. How do you get rid of parasites?

Introduction

Hello,

I joined the list almost a month ago, and while I've been lurking, it

really

wasn't intentional. It's just been an absolutely crazy month with

moving,

homeschooling my stepon, creating web pages, changing hosts, and arguing

with our ISP about why I couldn't see my own site when I tried to surf

there. That took all day yesterday, talking with more than 6 different

techs. Turns out it is their problem/fault, and we have a temporary fix

so

I can now surf to my site and check how it all looks. Anyhoo ...

We (hubby, stepson, myself, 2 cats and 1 guinea pig) live in the

Birmingham,

AL area. I've been making soaps and all for almost 10 years now. What

started as Christmas gifts of M & P soap and bath salts turned into a

passion

for CP soapmaking. The more I learned, the more passionate (addicted!)

I

became. I stopped making M & P about 6 years or so ago when I developed

chemical sensitivities. Fragrance oils cause me considerable health

problems, to the point where I can't go near a B & BW or Yankee Candle

store.

Major bummer with all the yummy fragrances available! But I'm looking

to

get back into it using essential oils with my discovery of SFIC bases.

First thing on my agenda is experimenting with natural coloring using

botanicals and clays.

Aside from soapmaking, I also have interests in herbs, computers and

crafts.

I've been making herbal remedies and incense for more years than I care

to

think about. I guess you could say I'm something of a dabbler in crafts

since I've done/tried so many different things. About the only craft I

could never get the hang of was sewing. I can sew on a button, or mend

a

seam or hem, but that's about it. I've been using computers for a good

15

years now. Started with an old Commodore that had maybe 2K of RAM, and

a

tape drive instead of a harddrive. Talk about a dinosaur!

I apologize for being a lurker, but hope to be posting more now that I'm

getting caught up (I think!) on everything.

Carol
