Carla,

Drugs or herbs/supps/vitamins will heal the symptoms

but we all know it goes deeper than that. :) She can take

oatmeal baths or poultices for immediate relief. Plus, for

maintenance relief, these are the very basics: L-Lysine

(amino acid), 500 mg. twice a day, is important for healing.

Vitamin C plus bioflavinoids, 2,000 mg. twice a day, helps

in destroying the virus and boosts the immune system.

Cayenne capsules, taken as directed on the label, relieves pain

and helps healing. Zinc chelate, 80 mg. daily for one week,

protects against infection and helps immune system.

Calcium chelate plus magnesium, 1,500 mg. calcium and 750 mg.

magnesium per day, is an antisress formula and aids healing and

nerve function. Vitamin A emulsion, 75,000 IU for 2 weeks, then

50,000 IU, helps prevent infection and boosts immune system.

The emulsion enters the bloodstream quickly. Vitamin D, 1,000 IU

twice daily for 1 week then 400 IU, helps heal tissue and is needed

for calcium absorption. Vitamin E, 400-800 IU per day, helps

prevent scar tissue. (Open a capsule and apply to skin if desired).

Germanium, 200 mg. daily, helps immune system. Multivitamin and

mineral complex, taken as directed on the label. Avoid Tylenol-type

medications or those containing acetaminophen, because

they will prolong the illness.

Her body is crying out for some nurturance

in one way or another. We can only go so long without it before

it shows up in a symptom. The supplements above will relieve

pain and boost her immune system enough to fight off the virus. But

it's time for her to look at her life and make some deeper changes, in

probably several areas if she truly wants to heal.

I think I exhibit some characteristics of shingles but I am not sure. What

are characteristics of shingles? Do you need to catch the virus to get

shingles?

thanks

Hi There:

Shingles is a disorder caused by the same virus, herpes zoster, that causes

chicken pox. Like other herpes family viruses, it never leaves the system,

instead hibernating in the nerve tracks of the body in a particular area,

which tends to be individual. When a person who has contracted chicken pox

has a stress to their system later in life, which can be from another

illness or a strong emotional upset, the virus is reactivated and causes

shingles, which appear as blistering sores along the nerve track where they

have lain dormant.

Since there is no known 'cure' for this, the treatment is largely

palliative, in other words, treatment is aimed at controlling outbreaks and

treating symptoms. It can be extremely painful, and the pain can linger long

after the outbreak is over because of nerve involvement... there can also be

serious problems if it involves the eyes in its nerve track.

It is a myth that if shigles 'go all the way around the body' you will

die... however, it's not likely, since the nerves don't do that, and the

worst thing would be the pain, which might make you feel as if you were

dying. I know several people with this disorder and they have found it

imperative to keep their immune system in good shape and their stress levels

well managed. Many also take antiviral medication and dietary supplements

that support the skin and nerves.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Crow!

I'd love to get my mother on a program that helped her

immune system and lowered her stress levels. I've

been concerned about her health for quite a long time

now. She doesn't eat properly, exercise, or surround

herself with supportive people. She tends to

sacrifice her own health and feelings for the many

trials and tribulations of those around her. She's

really a very caring, kind woman more full of love

than anyone I know. It always strikes me as unfair

that such a loving person should seem to suffer

physically so much.

Unfortunately I don't live near her, but I often try

to show her better eating habits and ways to exercise,

etc. when I'm home. I can't shake the feeling that

this outbreak is a manifestation of her anger at her

surroundings. I think that there are a lot of people

" getting on her nerves " and that she doesn't like to

admit those feelings because she sees them as somehow

unholy (my mother is an extremely committed christian)

and that consequently she drives the feelings into

herself.

I feel torn--on the one hand I want to move near her

and " take command " and make her exercise and eat

right--i don't want her to die so soon. On the other

hand, I know it is not my responsibility and that I

would be intrusive if I acted that way. somehow the

middle ground i end up taking--suggesting foods,

giving her herbs to make teas with, etc. seems sort of

wimpy and i'm afraid that time is running out.

i think i'm just sort of venting here. thanks for

listening everyone.

Herk,

Shingles is related to the chicken pox virus.

Typically the onset of shingles is marked by a sort of

rash-- an eruption of lesions of various sizes that

are fluid-filled. These eruptions tend to be on the

thoracic region of the body, but are not necessary

limited there. The eruptions then crust over and fall

off leaving scars. During this phase there may be

some nerve pain. Aferwards, more pronounced nerve

pain may be present--a condition called PHN. This

nerve pain can be quite painful.

I found several sites that give good information on

shingles:

http://www.healthylives.com/shingles.html

http://www.aftershingles.com/

http://www.ninds.nih.gov/health_and_medical/disorders/shingles_doc.htm

None of those sites mention anything about alternative

treatments. However, Linda wrote about some herbs

that can help, Rich wrote about a few holistic

remedies that help, and I found a doctor that does

alternative treatment:

http://www.drhui.com/

I hope this helps. Let me know if you need more

information since I'm now collecting it.

Thanks,

Carla

I don't know much about it, although I have known people who got it. I believe

it is a form of the chickenpox virus and is very painful (nerve ending

assault?). Try one of the websites that features medical information like

mayo.com or such a site to find the info you are seeking.

I have one friend who got it (under heavy stress!) and a grandma that got it as

well. Both were fatigued and their nerve endings were quite painful!

Hope this tidbit helps...

Carla,

These two traits actually go hand in hand much

of the time. What we call a 'loving' person is usually

someone who is loving everyone else, but often not

giving themselves that same time and attention. It's

amazing that we do that! I did it myself for years.

And, I was miserable. Ill, unhappy, resentful. It

just doesn't work. Ultimately it's our life and we

have to put in the time to make it good in

everyway we can. This includes caring for others

and helping them out, but not to the exclusion

of ourselves. I know you know this, the trick

is to get your mother to understand it! Illness and

pain wake people up. It's unfortunate that most

people will only pay attention at that point. But

it is effective. So this may be a time of huge

growth for her.

I don't think your making suggestions to her is

wimpy. It's really all you can do. Point her in the

right directions and be there for her through the

ups and downs. I think you're considerate and

are doing the right things.

LOL... <<smmooochies>>

I'm not a doctor, I just play one on TV ;-)

It's still good to do that research for yourself and to seek the

guidance of health care professionals, since it's nigh on

impossible for us to really assess what is going on with each

other in an email discussion forum.

But I like to think I rock <G>

Hi Vicki!

Shingles is indeed very painful and nothing to be taken lightly. I

developed shingles several years ago after my father passed away and none of

the medicines the Dr. gave me seemed to helped at first. We tried three

different ones altogether. My shingles attacked my right arm and

concentrated on a 3 inch area. Initially, it felt like a great wild beast

was biting through my arm just below my shoulder and the only thing there

was a wee red rash! I thought it was a spider bite because there was a

trail instead of a patch of rash.

Shingles causes stress from the pain and itching involved with nerves dying.

If the rash goes all the way around the body in the chest area, you could

lose breathing function which is why my Dr. checked immediately to see if I

had any on my back or chest. He cautioned me that if shingles gets in your

eyes you could lose your sight. While complementary treatments such as

Reiki and crystal elixirs will probably help, I do hope your husband is

seeing a good doctor. I know concentrating on relaxation and destressing

helped me immensely. I was over my shingles in a little more than a month

and they have not returned since.

Here are some sites on shingles to investigate:

This is slightly OT - off topic - but perhaps Dr's wd be able to help

with shingles if they used a protocol like the one that includes

silver colloid drops and food grade hydrogen peroxide.

Check the info re these via www.google.com

Shingles are a deep seated virus that tends to come up due to stress.

Therefore, anything that reduces stress will help. That includes good

nutrition in general.

As for MSM, it's a sulfur compound. I forget what the abbreviation stands

for. It's one of those complicated nutritional supplements that helps some

people and not others, and nobody knows for sure why.

I have suffered from shingles for years. I have found that if I take

L-Lysine when I first notice the symptoms, and daily during the

break out, that the attack sometimes abates immediately or the

duration is shortened-- I have gone so far as to forget to take them

once the discomfort stops and they return immediately. I have

recently begun to take colloidial silver(2 weeks ago) and noticed

that the attack that normally occurs on a monthly basis consisted of

only one small bump present for about 8 hours then gone. It will be

interesting to see if it becomes more effective, as I had been

taking it only about 5 days before the break out occured.

I hate to always harp about acupuncture/TCM but it has

researched effectiveness in so many areas. So with

shingles it has about an 80% success rate. I have seen

2 cases with total success, 6 months no return of

symptoms.herbs depend on the chinese diagnosis.

Local cure for herpes found

By CATHERINE MGENDI

Local researchers have identified a plant whose sap can effectively

treat skin infections caused by the herpes virus without causing any

side effects, a conference on infections control heard recently.

According to Mr James Muthotho, a microbiologist with the Kenya Medical

Research Institute (Kemri), the plant has been shown to " virtually cure "

herpes zoster, an itchy, painful skin infection characterised by

blistering.

Herpes zoster is caused by the varicella virus, which also causes

chicken pox in children, according to medical experts.

It is boosted by a depressed immunity, mainly resulting from HIV

infection as well as from cancer drugs and radiotherapy, doctors say.

The frangipani plant's extract also treats the less traumatic herpes

simplex which manifests itself as recurrent cold sores around the mouth,

Mr Muthotho says.

He unveiled these findings during the recently concluded scientific

conference of the Infections Control Association of Kenya held in

Nairobi.

Mr Muthotho says they have been studying the efficacy of the frangipani

plant, plumeria rubra of the Apocynaceae family, for the past five

years, and have successfully treated more than 130 people suffering from

herpes zoster.

The plant, which can grow more than two metres high and is vegetatively

propagated through the use of cuttings, is commonly referred to as the

`peace plant' as it is most commonly found in graveyards.

The frangipani sap, Mr Muthotho says, stops the itchiness of herpes

zoster sores, healing them without leaving any scars. It also kills the

intense, recurrent post-treatment pain, and prevents recurrence, unlike

the conventional drugs.

The microbiologist says the sap works by permeating the nervous system

cells to kill the herpes zoster virus eradicating the pain, and any

possibility of recurrence.

" During application, one experiences a burning sensation. However,

within 10 to 20 minutes, the pain in the lesions reduces dramatically, "

he says.

He adds that conventional medicines only dry up the blisters and do not

exterminate the virus, thus the recurrence of pain.

" The lesions heal without scar tissue formation or secondary bacterial

infections, " he says. " The drug Ipan (the plant sap) is safe and

efficacious. "

In some people, Mr Muthotho says, herpes zoster infection causes

restricted chest movements during breathing, which clear within two

hours of applying the sap.

The rules also state: Furthermore, there is a tremendous amount of false data, and confusion in the Natural Health Industry, for it has been covertly infiltrated by the giant Pharmaceuticals, and one of the main purposes of the list is to eradicate the bad information and promote tried and true solutions that address the true Cause of illness and which work.

Please state whether you have used the remedies or know someone who has successfully used the remedy you are giving.
