Guest guest Report post Posted June 25, 1999 Ronni: Acne, like hives, is a solar plexus (self-esteem) and sacral chakra (emotions and hormones) issue. People tend to break out more around times of hormonal change, ie, adolescence, menstrual cycle, pregnancy, high stress. Remember how that pimple would always erupt on the end of your nose right before that important date? ;-) All the way back to Daniel in the Bible it's been known that the best way to clear the skin is fresh air, water, and clean, " live " food. If a person has a great deal of trouble with this, some natural assistance can be gotten from using apple cider vinegar as an astringent and taking garlic (it has antimicrobial properties and there are " odorless " versions available, though the raw cloves are best). Avoiding processed, fatty foods and caffeine will help. A good sweat will help matters. Try not to use drying soaps. Even if your husband is reluctant to try new things, get a bottle of Bach's Rescue Remedy or some equivalent (Ellon has Calming Essence). I don't own any stock in it but I wish I did. I've survived all sorts of emotional upheavals and cross country treks with that stuff. Guest guest Report post Posted January 18, 2002 What I would reccomend for acne is drinking lots of water. Since I stopped taking Ativan I got acne and it helped when I drank water. I drink about 2 litres(at least) a day. I think you're right---zinc does help....I take it too. I've also heard that vitamin E helps. I also heard that Calendulla cream works well(it is a homeopathic product) that you can probably get at most vitamin/health stores. Hope that helps a little...sorry to hear your skin is breaking out....I can totally relate...it is not fun. Guest guest Report post Posted January 18, 2002 In addition I would say that after exercising(or using a sauna) you cleanse your skin because supposedly sweat brings out many toxins and makes your skin succeptible to breakouts. Guest guest Report post Posted January 18, 2002 Regardless of why, it definitely does help to clean up after sweating. If you were exercising and got sweaty, then take a shower. If you just ate greasy food or were in a hot room and your face felt greasy/hot then washing it with some mint castile soap should be fine. --Michael Gettingwell, the cresswells <egcress@s...> wrote: > > In addition I would say that after exercising(or using a sauna) you cleanse your skin because supposedly sweat brings out many toxins and makes your skin succeptible to breakouts. > Erica > > medwards706 [sMTP:medwards706] > Thursday, January 17, 2002 10:25 PM > Gettingwell > Re: Acne > > > > > ABSOLUTELY NO: > > Dairy > Sugar in any form except that found naturally in whole foods (and it > has to be IN the whole food, not an extract) > Hydrogenated or Transfats > Soybean Oil > Basically any n6 oil > Wheat > Gluten containing grains including wheat, oats, barely, etc > Iodine, which means no iodized salt, sea weed, and many fish have too > much (I'm finding I can't eat sardines anymore, although not sure of > this yet) > Fermented food including wine, beer, any other alcohol, soy sauce, > miso, vinegar > Too much salt is bad, how much is too much? Guest guest Report post Posted January 18, 2002 I am 25 and HAD an acne problem. My situation was different as I did have acne as a teenager. These are things I did that cleared up my skin. Along with eliminating saturated fats, sugar, and processed foods, I cut caffeine out of my diet...including chocolate! I don't drink sodas, coffee, or black tea. I stick to herbal tea when I want tea. Then I did a 3-day juice fast. Now I drink tones of water and finally I started juicing. I drink 2 to 3 fresh juices a day. I've made other dramatic changes but they were later, so don't believe they were contributing factors. Guest guest Report post Posted January 18, 2002 I'm no expert but the line of skin care I use has an article on their web site, www.sageskincare.com about cleansing after exercise. They say " When you sweat, your oily skin becomes oilier as the acids and salts mix with sebum and oil from your skin to glue down the dead skin cells creating a " Saran Wrap " like coating on the skin. " Then any lesions that are forming are trapped and this can exacerbate the acne. Hence you want to wash off the perspiration ASAP. I have couple of questions: - can I use olive oil? or coconut oil to cook?? - Some body told me about lemon-cure, seems like it is good for the liver and to clean inside. i should start with one lemon in hot water & increasing by one each day up to 5 and then go minus one until 1. how it sounds ? any suggestions? thanks a lot for all the useful suggestions. medwards706 <medwards706 wrote: ABSOLUTELY NO Dairy Sugar in any form except that found naturally in whole foods (and it has to be IN the whole food, not an extract) Hydrogenated or Transfats Soybean Oil Basically any n6 oil Wheat Gluten containing grains including wheat, oats, barely, etc Iodine, which means no iodized salt, sea weed, and many fish have too much (I'm finding I can't eat sardines anymore, although not sure of this yet) Fermented food including wine, beer, any other alcohol, soy sauce, miso, vinegar Too much salt is bad, how much is too much? Guest guest Report post Posted January 20, 2002 I can't infer from your name whether you are a male or female, but if you are female you should know that oral contraceptives alter your hormonal levels (that's how they work) and can cause acne. If you take these you could stop at least for a while and see if that helps. Olive caused me to have pimples every time I used it, so I would say no. Coconut oil is good for acne. Use as much as you want. You can even put it on your face (I do). Regarding lemons, I literaly EAT lemons. 1-3 a day with meals. They are supposed to cleanse the lymphatic system which I believe is very much connected to acne, especially acne on the neck, back, and chest. I don't know about anything else regarding lemons although I've read that other people have success with lemon juice in hot water or just plain lemon juice (not lemonade with sugar, but FRESH JUICE from a lemon). I can tell you that it won't cure you, but it will greatly reduce new pimples WHILE you are taking the lemon. It is especially good to have lemon right before and right after a meal that has bad food in it (like fast food). Let me know via email if this works for you, Michael Gettingwell, t santorini <santorini692001> wrote: > > Thanks for all the suggestions. Guest guest Report post Posted January 20, 2002 I'm not sure whether you are saying it is a problem of teenagers or Dr Job is, however a LOT of people in their 20's, 30's, and 40's have problems, even severe problems with acne. Also, it is not JUST a hormonal issue. There is a complex system in place in your body and while hormones can cause it, so can too much/too little of various nutrients, or bad lifestyle. Guest guest Report post Posted January 21, 2002 I wholeheartedly agree with you. I think for some people acne is *directly* caused by some things in the diet, such as milk or wheat. For other people I think liver/adrenal problems due to years of junk food, coffee, coke, caffeine are a direct cause. Whatever the underlying cause of acne is, I don't think dermatologist every try to fix it or even admit that one exists. The one thing I can tell you is that acne certainly isn't caused by a deficiency of antibiotics :-) --Michael > In a message dated 21/1/02 00:33:05 GMT Standard Time, medwards706 > writes: > > It was Dr Jon - I sent the post because as far as I am concerned, no matter > what the age, if you have acne, these should work short term whilst the > 'real' problem is worked on. > > Marianne > > > I'm not sure whether you are saying it is a problem of teenagers or > > Dr Job is, however a LOT of people in their 20's, 30's, and 40's have > > problems, even severe problems with acne. A derm has said to me directly that affecting skin complexion through diet is not what they do. They use a different paradigm. They are taught in school to map symptoms to drugs. So, I changed my diet and my skin cleared up. I basically removed bread, and fruits from my diet and added more animal protein and fats. I already avoided refined carbs. From my experience, I can say that dietary fats (except for hydrogenated fats) are not a problem. Carbs are. Shortly after I limited them (no bread or fruits for me), my skin cleared up. Basically I am on paleo diet animal foods and non-starchy vegitables. Oh, and try taking chromium. You'd need to find your dosage. Some take it around 1000 mcg (micrograms). It helps sugar metabolism. Roman
Guest guest Report post Posted January 22, 2002 Saturated fats should not be eliminated because they are health promoting and don't cause acne at all. Carbs, on the other hand, do cause acne for many. Roman Gettingwell, " B. Hurd " <bhurd@r...> wrote: > I am 25 and HAD an acne problem. My situation was different as I did have acne as a teenager. Guest guest Report post Posted January 22, 2002 Sugars and refined refined carbs must be eliminated from the diet. Also, vitamin A is a must supplement. If you're prone to persistent pimply eruptions, I'd bet a blood test would reveal that you're in the low end of the vitamin A range. To complement the impact of natural vitamin A, include vitamin E, zinc, pantothenic acid, GLA and the beneficial bacteria as part of the acne therapy. Pam Send FREE video emails in Mail. Eh? I thought O.C. was supposed to reduce acne? That's what the ads say, anyway, and I for one believe it! I've never been on The Pill, but have noticed that my acne decreases greatly while pregnant & heavily nursing.... One woman on another list said that 3 mg a day of MSM cleared up her pimples -- that would require something like 12 pills a day with my bottle, so I've only been taking 1.2 mg a day for the past few days -- dunno if it is helping with the pimples yet, but I *do* notice morning diarrhea...(??? is it from the MSM or the ginger in the pills?) TMI? > I've read > that other people have success with lemon juice in hot water or just > plain lemon juice Cool! Would grapefruit work too? Our local Hy-Vee has 18 lbs of grapefruit on sale for $4.89, and I was thinking of taking advantage of it (if it isn't a misprint that is, too good to be true!) I used to just think that was a clever marketing idea until I found out that OC can cause women to have acne. > One woman on another list said that 3 mg a day of MSM cleared up her pimples > -- that would require something like 12 pills a day with my bottle, so I've > only been taking 1.2 mg a day for the past few days -- dunno if it is helping > with the pimples yet, but I *do* notice morning diarrhea...(??? is it from > the MSM or the ginger in the pills?) TMI? Haven't used MSM (yet) so couldn't say. Ginger is supposed to soothe the stomach and was used for many years in Europe. I've had Ginger tea and it's great. They probably put the ginger in the pills to soothe the stomach from something else. I could be wrong though. > > I've read > > that other people have success with lemon juice in hot water or just > > plain lemon juice > > Cool! Would grapefruit work too? Not sure, but I am eating lemons, limes, and grapefruits. Many people are using grapefruit juice instead of lemon juice from liver cleanses/gallstone flushes which is related to why lemons are good for acne (directly related I think), so I suspect grapefruits help. Grapefruits also have lots of lycopene, the antioxidant found in tomatoes that inhibits prostate and other cancers. --Michael
Guest guest Report post Posted January 24, 2002 Pantothenic acid is part of the vitamin B complex, GLA is gamma-linolenic acid and beneficial bacteria is the bacteria in the intestines that promote digestion, support immune defenses and manufacture certain nutrients such as folic acid biotin and vitamin K. Guest guest Report post Posted January 28, 2002 Eti, Could you share more on her menstrual hx prior to the pill? Was she on the pill to improve her menses? Why did she stop using the pill? thanks, Fernando , " eti domb " <etidomb@h...> wrote: > Hi All, I would love some help with a case. My patient is a 25 year old female with severe acne on her face, chronic painful constipation alternating with loose stools and pain in the upper shoulder Gb21 area, usually on Right side but sometimes on the left. She is very skinny and small framed, under a lot of stress. History of 7 year pill use. Got the Acne 5 months ago when stopped the pill and the doctor put her on the pilland an antibiotic - Doxicycline. She refused Accutain. 5 years ago had mono for a month with no reccurances. Tongue is dusky-purple and pale hue, coat on the back is burnt yellow and dry. Pulse is choppy and weak. After treatment the pulses improved and were less choppy. I want to treat her Acne herbally. I was wondering if anyone knows of a good formula or topical application for Acne. Thanks for the input, Eti
