New here and reading past posts from the beginning. Just wanted to

introduce myself, I guess as that other 5% of the population who

suffers from this malady. I am a african american female, 40 yrs

young and go figure I am the only person I know with this, lol :). I

am sure there are others, more than likely much more than the small %

noted above. Its just that the brochures, the pics on the net and on

miracle cure web sites do not have any pics that feature us. Believe

me I have been having these rosy cheeks for years. About 12 yrs ago

I saw a commercial about rosacea and they offered a 1-800 # if you

had questions etc.

I rcvd the brochure, and the pics didnt really

look like what I had, maybe it was because of our skin tones. Then

as I read further it noted the specific ethnic groups who suffered

from this, well once I read that I knew it couldnt be my family...oh

of course somewhere down the line I am sure there was a rapeing of my

foremothers (not being negative, just a statement of truth) but hey I

have never heard of someone black with rosacea. So I just kind of

ignored it. Lets not even mention that I think my father had it but

hey who knew. My complexion is not that dark but nor is it extremely

light so I guess needless to say we are out here and dang it my face

is itchy, red, mild/moderate case of adult acne and get this also

some areas of sebhorriac dermatitus. My symptoms became very bad

after a 6 year breakup, that was about 2 yrs ago, and if I must say

it is been persistant/consistant, out of the 4 symptoms, they vary so

strangely that I dont know day to day if I will look normal or if I

have been sun bathing or if I ate too much greasy food (zits). So

hey what stage does this mean I am. And out of all of my reading I

am still so confused about what blushing and flushing is...ok I

digress...on with my tale...the stress caused major problems with

mental state (depression), digestive tract (gallbladder removal--due

to stones) and onset of rosacea. I have stories, both of depressing

natures " face just being downright funked up " and financial

woes " dermatologist prescribing med after med after med...which for

me none have worked, and I had so many barely used meds that I

actually tried to give them back...the pharmacy could have used them

for research--dtermine why they werent working for $50. Of course

the only thing that I felt was working (prescribed hydrocortisone-

from PCP) my dermatologist informed me to stop immediately because it

only exacerbated the problem. Now I am at my wits end...I am

gainfully employed and can successfully care for me and mine, but I

cannot afford all these laser treatments etc I keep reading about.

Hey $500 may not seem like much but I just can find other useful

things to do with that...how many shoes do you think I could get

buy...LOL :). Seriously, I enjoy looking my best as well as the next

person, and sure my redness although promiment,( I get the sun burned

question also) is not as focal as others due to the contrasting

colors of our skin but I think there has to be a natural way to

combat this problem...what is that saying about disease....our bodies

are in a state of DIS - - EASE. So One Love I just hope you can

point me in the right direction to learning about what else is out

there......

Okay, so am I forgiven for this long long post. I guess I needed to

get that all off my chest. Thank you all for the patience with my

sharing.... : ). Now I am relaxed enough to get some sleep, its

2:30am, lol.

I know how frustrating it is. I rarely if ever post but sometimes reply to

other posts. I am on another forum too, rosacea-support

which has some African-American people with rosacea that post to it. It is

not Just a fair skinned thing boys & girls - there are pink faces in all

races.

I've noticed that they (the experts) all seem to say that rosacea is " the

curse of the Celts " but, you know, since it does affect other people why

don't they get mentioned too?? I find that weird also. Maybe it is simply

that the suckers that fall for the " quick magic fix " website products are

all white people. (ha, ha) I don't know....how odd though.

Personally, I don't care what colour we are as long as we can back to the

right colour and not the PINK/RED with bumpies!!! Oh and the bumps....I

can't stand this.

I am a 30 year old woman that had acne throughout my teens and into my 20's

then my skin got a lot better once I started using alpha hydroxy acids on

it. I used Neostrata and the stuff worked like magic. I still broke out

sometimes, but could deal with a few zitties, not a faceful. I was always a

blusher. But through my 20's I blushed more often and more obviously, esp.

when I had alcoholic bevvies. Then when I was 28 my skin started to be

really sensitive - more than before I should say. And itchy - holy

you-know-what - so itchy. Then I'd scratch the itchy dry areas and these

zits would come up. If I don't scratch they don't come up as badly, I

noticed. My skin is still oily at times, but still dry, itchy and spotty.

I just got a prescription for noritate and am going to fill it soon. My derm

said that I should do the laser treatment - but at $400 a pop with the

average (she said) being 4+ treatments that's too much $$ for me. Why

doesn't OHIP cover this?? Have been using Metrocream for 2 years and it

worked at first, but now nothing. I look like a pink/red bumpy mess. Soooo

frustrated...
