Guest guest Posted December 13, 2003 Report Share Posted December 13, 2003 I remember a long time ago, perhaps even as much as 10+ years ago, a family friend knew I was interested in alternative medicine, and made the comment, well it really is going to hit the mainstream, even the NIH is wanting to study it... Well, alternative medicine has hit the mainstream, I think because it works, and certainly not due to any recognition or approval from the NIH. This article just might explain why... Other comments? At this time it is perfectly legal for NIH (National Institutes of Health) employees to accept consulting jobs from the very companies they are supposed to monitor. Some garnered over $1,000,000 in the past decade in consulting fees. While you and I are very likely to get the impression that the conflict of interest could not be more obvious, Dr. Ruth L. Kirschstein, who as the deputy director or the acting director of the NIH since 1993 has approved many of the top officials' consulting arrangements, said she " did not believe they had compromised the public interest " .
