Teeth clenching during sleep

Hi everyone,

Any advise on how to prevent teeth clenching during sleep? I've been experiencing this sporadically for the last few years. I'm an avid practitioner of yoga, maintain a healthy diet and consider myself to be relatively stress free. I read the post about jaw grinding and have been attempting the recommended posture and notice that it does relax my jaw while awake but still no luck while sleeping. I find myself waking up at night with my jaw clenched tight. Does anyone else experience this? Anyone know any bedtime yoga rituals that may be helpful?

Thanks!

Skye

Hey Skye,

I share your nighttime mandible crunching unconscious routine... And

as a fellow gnasher, I feel deep down that it's a bit of an angst/ocd

thing due to humans not being in our natural environment (sidewalks,

buildings, offices instead of among trees, grass and sand.) But

whatever the reasons, it's bad for our teeth and enamel layer, leading

to more cavities and dental problems down the road.

Luckily for you, it was a recent topic of these boards, and I compiled

together all the tips and exercises into one sheet, which I've copied

and pasted below...

Good luck!

-----

Kundalini to help relax Jaw, and help alleviate Tooth Grinding and TMJ

Stress.

Exercise #1)

There has been a lot of talk about jaw grinding. Guru Dev Singh showed

me this posture and it completely relaxes the jaw. Sitting upright put

your arms straight in front of you at shoulder height palms down. Then

bend your arms at the elbows toward each other and place the palm on

top of the opposite forearm. Hold this posture for 1 1/2 to 3 minutes.

Do this as often as you want. Even if you don't think you hold tension

here, try it. You'll see how relaxed your jaw can become. Sat Nam,

Kartar Kaur (Portland, Maine)

Exercise #2)

LAAAAAAAAAAAA Meditation

This is a meditation that seems to help TMJ (tempromandibular joint)

Stress.

Inhale in a whistle with pursed lips.

Exhale by chanting a loud & long LAAAAAAAAA

with the mouth wide open, like an opera singer, until need to inhale.

Allow the vibration to penetrate the jaw.

Time: 7-11 minutes

Comment: Useful for those who have blocks in their 5th (throat)

chakra, TMJ irritation and teeth grinding.

Exercise #3)

There is one simple exercise for the jaw which is as simple as trying

to clean inside all your mouth with your tongue.

(To be a little more precise, this means " swishing/swirling " your

tongue powerfully in a circle on the outside of your teeth between the

outside teeth and inner cheeks. You can work up to 22 minutes

(11-minutes in each direction), starting with 3 minutes

counterclockwise, and 3 minutes clockwise. It should stretch & work

the tongue. Do it with a relaxed face. And it has the added benefit of

whitening your teeth. - RFS)

Tip #1)

Sometimes grinding the teeth indicates anger, frustration and a need

to speak up for oneself. I used to grind my teeth when I was dealing

with a group of bullies who were damaging my property and working to

get me out of their neighborhood. Taking them to small claims court

stopped their behavior and stopped my teeth grinding. Sets with

shoulder-stand, chants and neck rolls also help the throat chakra. -

Satpal Kaur

Tip #2)

Massage therapy on the masseteur muscle and temporalas major as well

as craniosacral therapy can help relax the area and improve respiration.

Sat Nam Todos,

I have worn dental nite guard for about 30 years. (I'm 60).The newer ones are a

bit less of

an intrusion than the antiques. if you have dental insurance, what haver your

got to lose?

If you don't have a dentist check the price and then check the price if you go

to India,

Thailand or Argentia.

Sat nam,

I used to grind my teeth in my sleep back around 1997. Even though some may say

teeth clenching has to do with words you want to say but aren't saying, mine

seemed to have a direct correlation to worrying about money. At the time, I

worked at a chiropractors office and could get adjusted regularly. When I was

going through a bout of teeth clenching, it was usually when my hips were out of

alignment which makes sense with the first chakra survival concerns I was

having. just thought I'd mention this.

Sat nam,

In my early thirties, my dentist noticed wear on my teeth from clenching and grinding. I could feel how tired my jaw was in the morning and realized he was right. Not long after that, I began a forty day sadhana of Kirtan Kriya (also fondly known as Sa-Ta-Na-Ma Meditation) for 31 minutes a day, accompanied by Grace of God Meditation, morning and evening. This is the practice to clear the unconscious and get rid of all the old boyfriends, sex partners, and husbands hanging out in the electromagnetic field and dreams. The teachings promise that after forty days "the aura will be tipped with gold and silver" and the arc line as "brilliant as diamonds." I don't know if that came true, but I stopped grinding and clenching my teeth and haven't had a problem since--for over 25 years. And good riddance to those unwanted guys!

Kirtan Kriya is easy to find in Sadhana Guidelines, and if you would like instructions for Grace of God Meditation, let me know, and I can forward them to you.

Today seems to be my day to jump in. This is my third post!

Dear Amar Atma and Siri Bandhu,

Sat nam. I meant to say " ex-husbands " in my post on this subject,

instead of " husbands. " Can you make a correction?.

Thanks,

Sat Nam,

Having had this same problem, many years ago and somewhere (can't

remember where I saw it) found these questions.

What is it that you are not saying? Who is it that you need to say

something to but havn't? What are you angry over? What are you trying

to stuff down?

While this method is not Kundalini Yoga, it works, very fast. I have

used if for the last 4 years and gotten rid of asthma, colds, anger,

emotions, memories, being too tired to get out the door anything you

can think of. It takes about 3 minutes of time and you tap on energy

meridians on the face and hands.

Its FREE, find it at this website: http://www.emofree.com/

Try it yourself by downloading the EFT Manual. It gives you all the

basics and allows you to test drive EFT on your own issues. They also

have a wonderful data basis with great ideas on how others are doing

it, questions to set up.

Do try it, it is really wonderful.

Sat Nam,

I used to experience teeth clenching/grinding during

sleep. One night when the grinding woke me up, I realized my hands were

clenched into tight fists. As I relaxed them, my jaw also relaxed.

Over the course of a few weeks, this pattern repeated. I started paying

attention to my hands as I fell asleep, making sure both my hands and breathing

were relaxed. The teeth grinding disappeared. Cause and effect

relationship? I don’t know. But, if you find your fists are

tightly gripped when you are awoken by jaw clenching or teeth grinding, it can’t

hurt to try relaxing them and see what happens.

As a person who uses yoga do deal with stress I find that I wake up

more tense than I am when I go to sleep. I think this is because I am

conciously de-stressing myself during the day but at night my

conciousness switches off and the fears and frustrations in my

subconcious start taking over again - spooky! When I first realised

this it was a shock - I was waking up in fear fro my future - anf the

fear was really big. Then I realised this was me just becoming aware

of fears that had been there all along.

I think if I keep doing the yoga these subconcious fears will empty

out and maybe one day I will be waking up as loose and carefree as a

baby. Teeth grinding has stopped at least.

Sat Nam,

Yogi Ji once told me to do Sat Kriya 31 min. in the a.m. & 31 min. in the p.m.

If you did even a little Sat Kriya before bed I suspect you would clear the consciousness enough to have a wonderful sleep. I pray you get that cozy sleep that goes deeper than deep & wake up feeling wonderful.

Another thought just came into mind for you - magnesium combination powder - really relaxes in a deep deep way & brings very restful sleep. I also make sesame milk (sprout the seeds 1st & then wiz in vitamixer or similar device - a blender will do. Before bed having sesame milk really relaxes (it has natural tryptophane, calcium & more)....

Also lettuce & celery juice. I helped a person who had sleep & nerve problems & these things helped turn her around, as well as sesame oil foot masssage.

When I met her she was loosing up to 5 nights of sleep in a row (she had taken Lunesta for a couple of months & it messed her up really badly). Now she sleeps deeply every night. She also did those sesame oil enemas that you keep in overnight. It changed her energy a lot.

Blessings
