Slaughter fight for 'sacred' bull - BBC online

The fight for Shambo

There is a last minute appeal to prevent the slaughter of a sacred bull which has tested positive for tuberculosis. The bull, Shambo, lives in a shrine in Llanpumsaint, Carmarthenshire.

Officials at the Skanda Vale Temple say the killing of cows and bulls is against their religious principles.

But the Welsh assembly government said infected animals were slaughtered to "protect both human and animal health".

Shambo tested positive in routine bovine TB screening and was placed in isolation.

Agriculture officials intend to start discussing whether to slaughter the six-year-old British Friesian on 14 May, but the temple is mounting a legal challenge and has begun an online petition to save Shambo.

Ramesh Kallidai of the Hindu Forum of Britain, which represents many Hindus in the UK, said the rest of the herd of 35 cows and bulls were "absolutely fine". ........><!-- D(["mb","</font\></p\>
<p style="margin-left:50px;margin-right:50px"\><font size="2"\>"As a responsible organisation, the temple has sought professional veterinary advice to ensure that robust measures are taken to isolate Shambo and minimise the spread of disease. </font\></p\>
<p style="margin-left:50px;margin-right:50px"\><font size="2"\>Every effort will be made to deal with this case as sensitively as possible </font\></p\>
<p style="margin-left:50px;margin-right:50px"\><font size="2"\>Welsh assembly government spokesperson </font\></p\>
<p style="margin-left:50px;margin-right:50px"\><font size="2"\>"Killing Shambo will violate our faith, tradition and desecrate our temple. Welsh assembly government spokesperson

"Killing Shambo will violate our faith, tradition and desecrate our temple. It goes against all accepted norms of our faith."

Mr Kallidai added they would be calling on the Welsh assembly government to intervene. Skanda Vale Temple, known as the Community of the Many Names of God is a multi-denominational monastic centre, which embraces all religious faiths and includes three Hindu shrines.

It attracts over 90,000 pilgrims every year and Skanda Vale also runs a hospice.

Speaking on behalf of Hindus at the temple, Swami Suryananda said they "understand and appreciate" the position with regards to public health and containing the spread of bovine TB.

"We have been advised that there is provision both within the Animal Health Act 1981 and the more recent TB Order Wales 2006 for permission to treat and vaccinate any animal identified as having TB with the prior consent of the minister for the National Assembly of Wales."

But an assembly government spokesperson said TB was a disease which was transmissible to humans and other mammals.

But Shambo would suffer the rest of his life with TB. Which is very painful. Wouldnt it be merciful to allow the slaughter? Assuming it will never be cured.

Please do not kill this animal. It is a treatable condition adn should be allowed to live. I feel very strongly about this issue.

Who are we to play God on deciding the fate of another living being??

Animals as I understood can not accumulate karma. The living entity that has taken birth as an animal is burning away its "bad" karma and maybe promoted to a higher living being eg human being.

By being "compassionate" and murdering the animal you are actually hindering it from burning up its "bad" karma and it has to continue to suffer in its next life and you may have to accept the karma of murdering the animal.

It is even worse because the animal is a bovine because according to vedic injunction the bull is considered a father and cow is the mother.

So murdering a Bull / Cow is like murdering a Brahmana.

Shambu was put to rest. So the case is closed.

No such protests came up when countless chickens were slaughtered sometime ago for the bird flu scare.

How is the cow better than a chicken? This is a very ignorant view. A cow has a single soul too just like a chicken and there is no sense in differentiating the soul of a cow from that of a chicken. The Gita says, the wise looks upon a Brahmana, a cow and an elephant equally - because they are not their bodies but are eternal souls. Thus a chicken is part of the list too. By the Gita, none of those protesting are wise.

Shed your ginorance people. If you wish to protest do it at all levels. Not just the cows. You have to protest against KFC just as intensely as you battle McDonalds.

Cheers

I agree with your last point, but still there are differences between each form of life. We see all living entities "equally" because the paramatma is situated in all of their hearts, not because we falsely think a dog is a learned brahmana. The Gita's message (vidya vinaya sampane, brahmane gavi hastini...) isn't that we should take philosophical lessons from the cow and then try to milk the brahmana. Seeing the oneness of all living entities is to see the paramatma and the atma, who is the true living entity in the body.

When we see so many cars driving on the highway, true knowledge means to know that there are individual human drivers in each car - not to think that each car is a seperate living being. When we see a big truck, do we think that it must be a big driver and when we see a small car do we think it must be a small driver? No. We understand that the living entity (driver) is different from the car. Thus the knowledge Krishna is telling us to cultivate in the Gita is not blind foolishness (thinking the cow to be a brahmana), but complete understanding of what is the atma and the paramatma in the heart of all living entities. This paramatma and atma are the same in all forms of life. Seeing that is true knowledge, or equal vision (panditah sama darshanah).

As with the cow and the brahmana, we still must interact with their bodies differently even though we see the soul equally within both. We milk the cow and we learn spiritual topics from the brahmanas. So when dealing with all forms of life, each life form is dealt with according to its acquired body.

Ideally no living life should be killed (ahimsa), but the shastra says all life lives at the expense of another's life. Even if you are vegetarian, you must take the life of so many plants to sustain your body. Would you consider taking the life of the potato to be equal to taking the life of a small child? Obvious there is a difference and anyone can understand it by introspection.

According to the development of consciousness, pain is experienced by different forms of life differently. It is more sinful to harm those life forms that have developed higher conscious awareness, as their suffering will be greater. According to the scriptures, plants have the lowest conscious awareness, and therefore it is much less sinful to take the life of a plant over a human (or cow, dog, chicken, etc.). Still sin will be involved, but the harm caused is much less than the harm caused to a fully conscious living entity.

The scriptures also state that cows have the highest conscious awareness of all life forms prior to the human species. Thus of all animals it is the most sinful to hurt a cow. In addition to this, cows and bulls are given special status as they are considered our mother and father. If your mother or father was killed, it would not be unreasonable for you to protest it.
