Guest guest Report post Posted July 25, 2006 British pronounce 'island' as 'eye land' i.e. 's' is silent. But, as per Webster's dictionary', i of island is pronounced as i of in and s as s in say. Different people pronounce the same word differently. Which pronunciation are you assuming? I guess the 'a' of isla is pronounced like a of father. Correct? Avinash 0 Report post Posted July 26, 2006 In Sanskrit there is no concept of silent letters. Therefore, if you do not want certain alphabet to be pronounced, then it should not even be written.
