TITHI SUNIYAM

TITHI is a division of the Lunar Month. The Lunar

month is divided into 2 Pakshas each of 15 tithis. The

Lunar Month is usually of a duration of 28 days and

odd. This has to be divided into 30 Tithis, and thus a

Tithithi is shorter than a DAY. The Tithi is

calculated by a simple formula Tithi=INT(MOON's

Longitude-Sun's Long)/12 +1. This is calculated at the

Start of the Hindoo Dar, which starts at SUNRISE at

the place. In such calculations, where the Duration of

the Tithi is more than 6o ghatikas, a TITHI will be

repeated on 2 dates. When 2 tithi's end on the same

DATE, a TITHI is said to be missing or SHUNYA.

In Indian Panchangas, as per tradition, the

SHRADHA/annual remebrance day of the father or Mother

is observed according to the TITHI. In such Panchangs,

on some date 2 tithis may be shown, and on some days,

a Zero may be indicated. This is also known as SHOONYA

TITHI. For example No shraddha is done on

EKADASHI(11th) tithis, so it is always a Shunya tithi

for Shradhas. For Election astrology it is usual to

avoid shunya tithis and days when 2 tithis end on the

same day.

SHUNYA TITHI

There is confusion between “Shunya Tithi”;Kshaya Tithi and “ Vridhi Tithi” in the above explanation.

If a Tithi starts after <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Sunrise and ends before the Sunrise on the next day, it is called “Kshaya Tithi” (diminutive). During currency of such Tithi there is no Sunrise.

If a Tithi contains two Sunrises then, it is called “Vridhi Tithi” (intercalatery), also called “Adhika Tithi”

Both the Tithis are unsuitable for any beneficial Muhurt (election). These are similar to Kshaya and Adhika Maas. The Sun is source of all energies and represents soul in Muhurtas, and the Moon which gets light from the Sun, represents mind. The Kshaya Tithi not getting rejuvenated, can not be beneficial to the humanity. Thus activities related to Dharam, Arth, Kaam & Moksha do not fructify especially during Kshaya Tithi. A Paksha having two Kshaya Tithis (thus having only 13 Shuddha Tithis) is called “Vishvaghastra Paksha”: and generates fear among the masses, and is thus unsuitable for the beneficial Muhurtas. However according to Sage Vasist , if Jupiter is in quadrant of an election chart then, the above Dosha is removed; and urgent activities can be performed. Kshaya & Vridhi Tithis is local geographical phenomenon, and not celestial.

Maas Shunya Tithis” are specific Tithis during specific months during which a work initiated does not succeed. There are “Tithi Shunya Nakshatra” & “Tithi Shunya Lagnas”- which are distinct from the above in which are also held as inauspicious in Hindu Muhurt astrology.

For the benefit of the readers “Maas Shunya Tithis” during different lunar months are given below:
