1. By Ekalavya das Dear Maharajas and Prabhus, Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada. This message is also in an attached .doc file with active links and formating. Also linked is a poster to help you advertise the event in your community. We have more posters on our website. World Holy Name Festival 2010 is from September 17 - October 2, 2010. Please visit our website: www. worldholyname. com to download the latest posters, banners, stickers, and other goodies. You can also upload reports, blogs, photos, videos, etc yourself directly to the site. You can view the schedule online here: https://docs. google. com/Doc?docid=0AS6kJ9ks75AAZGdkemJrenNfMWhwdzdwOGMy&hl=e n There is a text version of the schedule at the bottom of this letter. The World Holy Names Committee proposes the following initiatives: 1. Japathon 2. Harinam Sankirtan 3. 12-hour Kirtans 4. Global Prayer 5. Reciting the Glories of the Holy Names 1. The Japathon starts on the auspicious Disappearance Day of Namacharya Srila Haridas Thakura (see Calendar) and continues for 10 days until the anniversary of the arrival of Srila Prabhupada, The Ambassador of The Holy Names, to the West. The Japathon is a chance for congregation members to join full-time devotees for japa. Haridas Thakura chanted more than 300,000 names of Krishna daily and was awarded the title Namacharya by Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. Last year during the Japathon, ISKCON Pune’s congregation chanted 70 million Holy Names daily. None of us can be Haridas Thakur, but, collectively, we can chant millions and billions of Holy Names. 2. Last year, we encouraged temples to participate in a 50-man Harinam to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of Srila Prabhupada’s Sannyasa. Some temples organized Harinams on a daily basis, one temple organized a 500-man party, and some temples joined together for Harinam. This is a coordinated effort to push back maya and deliver the Holy Names into the hearts of every city. We suggest a 51-man Harinam for each Friday of the Japathon (see Calendar). 3. 12-hour Kirtans. We suggest inviting your congregation to the temple for a day of kirtan, from 10 AM to 10PM (local time). We have scheduled these “sankirtan yajnas” on each Saturday of the World Holy Names Week (a week which has now expanded to include two Ekadasis). We will post the schedules online as they become available. 4. Global Prayer - all the initiatives are meant to unite ISKCON and even non-ISKCON devotees in prayer. The more devotees that participate, the better. Instead of one temple doing a 12-hour sankirtan-yajna, we want to encourage *all* the temples to do a yajna (or going on Harinam) at the same time. With the different time zones, however, this becomes complex. This “Global Prayer”, however, will take place on the Disappearence Day of Srila Haridas Thakur, Tuesday, September 21st, at noon GMT and go for 10 minutes. We ask all devotees everywhere to stop what they are doing (even if they are sleeping) about 5 minutes before 12:00 PM GMT: wash your hands and mouth, then chant for 10 minutes. If you find this enlivening, feel free to continue throughout the remainder of World Holy Names Week. 5. Reciting the Glories of the Holy Names - we ask that devotees who are giving class during World Holy Names Week to speak about the glories of the Holy Names. Please visit our website to access some nice quotes about the glories of the Holy Names. www. worldholyname. com We welcome your comments and suggestions and look forward to joining with you for successful World Holy Name Festival 2010. 6. Rajasuya Das would be benefitted if his son is respected and adorned by the gullible neophyte bhaktas who fall for the externals very easily. Later his son will be made a president/zonal secretary/gbc etc. So it's extended sense gratification. It should also be noted that the bond between parents and children are more stronger in India. So father projecting the children or children projecting the father would be mutually beneficial. What power doesn't a temple president in India have these days, especially when they are each sitting on millions of dollars? I feel like throwing up over this self promotion.

8. "In this connection we may mention an incident that took place between two of our sannyāsīs while we were preaching the Hare Krsna maha-mantra in Hyderabad. One of them stated that "Hare Rama" refers to Sri Balarama, and the other protested that "Hare Rama" means Lord Rama. Ultimately the controversy came to me, and I gave the decision that if someone says that the "Rama" in "Hare Rama" is Lord Ramacandra and someone else says that the "Rama" in "Hare Rama" is Sri Balarama, both are correct because there is no difference between Sri Balarama and Lord Rama. Here in Sri Caitanya-caritamrta we find that Krsnadasa Kaviraja Gosvāmī has stated the same conclusion: yei yei rūpe jāne, sei tāhā kahe sakala sambhave kṛṣṇe, kichu mithyā nahe If someone calls Lord Rāmacandra by the vibration Hare Rāma, understanding it to mean "O Lord Rāmacandra!" he is quite right. Similarly, if one says that Hare Rāma means "O Śrī Balarāma!" he is also right. Those who are aware of the viṣṇu-tattva do not fight over all these details." - Srila Prabhupada, Cc. Adi 5.132, Purport
9. Therefore it is to be understood that when Jaya and Vijaya descended to this material world, they came because there was something to be done for the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Otherwise it is a fact that no one falls from Vaikuntha.' - SB 7.1.35 Purport 'The mature devotees, who have completely executed Krishna consciousness, are immediately transferred to the universe where Krishna is appearing. In that universe the devotees get their first opportunity to associate with Krishna personally and directly.' - Krishna Book, Chapter 28, [Releasing Nanda Maharaja from the clutches of Varuna (p. 186)] 'Sometimes it is asked how the living entity falls down from the spiritual world to the material world. Here is the answer. Unless one is elevated to the Vaikuntha planets, directly in touch with the Supreme Personality of Godhead, he is prone to fall down, either from the impersonal Brahman realization or from an ecstatic trance of meditation.' - SB 3.25.29, Purport 'This ordinary living being is of two kinds -- nitya-baddha or nitya-mukta. One is eternally conditioned and the other eternally liberated. The eternally liberated living beings, are in the Vaikuntha jagat, the spiritual world, and they never fall into the material world.' - SB 5.11.12 Purport 'From Vedic scriptures it is understood that sometimes even Brahma and Indra fall down, but a devotee in the transcendental abode of the Lord never falls.' - SB 3.15.48 Purport 'The conclusion is that no one falls from the spiritual world, or Vaikuntha planet, for it is the eternal abode.' - SB 3.16.26 Purport

Srimad Bhagavatam 10.5.25 naikatra priya-samvasah suhrdam citra-karmanam oghena vyuhyamananam plavanam srotaso yatha TRANSLATION Many planks and sticks, unable to stay together, are carried away by the force of a river's waves. Similarly, although we are intimately related with friends and family members, we are unable to stay together because of our varied past deeds and the waves of time. PURPORT Vasudeva was lamenting because he and Nanda Maharaja could not live together. Yet how could they live together? Vasudeva warns that all of us, even if intimately related, are carried away by the waves of time according to the results of past karma. http://vedabase.net/sb/10/5/25/en
11. (ISKCON YOUTH FORUM - Pune - Spiritual Scientist) Once Socrates was seen by his friends spending a long time in a market. Knowing his frugal nature, they teased him, "Even you have started dreaming about shopping." Socrates soberly replied, "I was observing all the unnecessary things that people buy." We often think of necessity as a thing without which it is difficult, if not impossible, to live. In this sense, food, clothing, shelter are our necessities. But in a more positive holistic sense, a necessity is that which once satisfied makes us fully satisfied forever. Why do we always want more and more? Because it is our right and nature to have unlimited possessions by possessing the possessor of all possessions – God, Krishna. As the eternal spiritual children of God, our innermost need is the security and satisfaction that accompanies the devotional remembrance of our all-powerful all-loving Father. Just as the first need of a fish is water, the first need of our body is air, the first need of our own selves as souls is remembrance of God or more precisely, Krishna consciousness. Many people today feel that they have no time for God or spiritual enquiry. But what makes them so busy? It is their own self-created pursuit of the unnecessities of life, which they imagine to be necessities due to their spiritual unawareness. Srila Prabhupada, the founder of ISKCON, succinctly summarizes this tragic entrapment, "If our endeavor is not to enquire about the Absolute Truth, we will simply increase our endeavor to satisfy our artificial needs." Today's world of hi-tech glamorous advertising portrays luxuries as necessities. Consequently, shopping has become not just a fashion, but an obsession. Possessing new things gives some pleasure, but sadly the charm of newness fades soon. What remains thereafter is the burden of maintenance, which demands time, energy, care and money. People today have tea-set, sofa set, multimedia set – and they are always up-set. An exasperated shopping addict stated his predicament poignantly, "Everything I own owns me." Nevertheless possessiveness retains its almost irresistible fascination. If people have little, they want a lot. And if they have a lot, they want a lot more. But there is a better way to live. When we make God the wealth of our heart by chanting His holy names, then we become enlightened to use the wealth of the world to benefit ourselves and others. Let us therefore free ourselves from poverty of the heart and enrich ourselves with devotion and satisfaction. 12. Once upon a time, there lived a King who, despite his luxurious lifestyle, was neither happy nor content. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:" /> One day, the King came upon a servant who was singing happily while he worked. This fascinated the King; why was he, the Supreme Ruler of the Land, unhappy and gloomy, while A lowly servant had so much joy. The King asked the servant, " Why are you so happy?" The man replied, " Your Majesty, I am nothing but a servant, but my family and I don't need too much - just a roof over our heads and warm food to fill our tummies." The king was not satisfied with that reply. Later in the day, he sought the advice of his most trusted advisor. After hearing the King's woes and the servant's story, the advisor said, " Your Majesty, I believe that the servant has not been made part of The 99 Club." "The 99 Club? And what exactly is that?" the King inquired. The advisor replied, " Your Majesty, to truly know what The 99 Club is, place 99 Gold coins in a bag and leave it at this servant's doorstep." When the servant saw the bag, he took it into his house. When he opened the bag, he let out a great shout of joy... So many gold coins! He began to count them. After several counts, he was at last convinced that there were 99 coins. He wondered, " What could've happened to that last gold coin? Surely, no one would leave 99 coins! " He looked everywhere he could, but that final coin was elusive. Finally, exhausted, he decided that he was going to have to work harder than ever to earn that gold coin and complete his collection. From that day, the servant's life was changed. He was overworked, horribly grumpy, and castigated his family for not helping him make that 100th gold coin. He stopped singing while he worked. Witnessing this drastic transformation, the King was puzzled. When he sought his advisor's help, the advisor said, " Your Majesty, the servant has now officially joined The 99 Club. " He continued, " The 99 Club is a name given to those people who have enough to be happy but are never contented, because they're always yearning and striving for that extra 1 telling to themselves: "Let me get that one final thing and then I will be happy for life ." We can be happy, even with very little in our lives, but the minute we're given something bigger and better, we want even more! We lose our sleep, our happiness, we hurt the people around us; all these as a price for our growing needs and desires. That's what joining The 99 Club is all about." Prabhu, Are you already a part of the 99 Club .. ?
13. You are right Gaea. Blanket criticism of the whole organization would mean offense to the sincere one's inside the same oraganization. Prabhupada had the vision for 10,000 years. May be the future will see more powerful people descend to preach and carry forward Srila Prabhupada's glorious movement. And when they do, all the misgivings of the present generation will be crushed to powder and washed off. I remember as Prabhupada himself said, "the third generation will fly on carpets". Let them fly on carpets and preach harinama and glorify Prabhupada.
14. There is a memoir of Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura built on Yoga Pitha temple premises with a deity of Srila Bhaktivinoda. Since he was the one who discovered the real Yoga Pitha and help build a temple for Sri Chaitanya, devotees first worship him and pay their obeisances before worshipping Sri Chaitanya in His birth place.
15. There are 2 things one should forget and 2 things one should remember: 1) If anyone has done anything bad to you, forget it!... (the understanding is if one thinks ‘how can I?' the reply is that holding onto a grudge will stop your own ability to peacefully contemplate the Lord). 2) If you have done something good for someone –forget it! (no one should think that the recipient of ones charity or assistance should be perpetually grateful. they are a part and parcel of the supreme, so to serve them was our duty, to be executed without consideration of any personal benefit..) If one can forget the first 2 items, then they will get the strength to carry out remembering the next 2 items, don’t try to remember the next 2 items if one is unprepared to forget the first 2 items what are the 2 items one should remember? 1) One should always remember the Name, Fame, Form, pastimes of the Personality of Godhead. 2) One should always remember this might be my last day” (I might die today). (meaning if I might die today, what type of dependency would I cultivate, and who maintains insignificant quarrelsome mentality, if they feel convinced that today might be my last day?)
16. Hanuman is Lord Shiva's expansion to serve his master Lord Rama. 'Sankara suvan kesri nandana.' Arjuna sat in meditation on the instruction of Krishna to get Pashupata astra from Lord shiva. At that time he saw a wild-pig running towards him at great speed. As the pig neared him Arjuna shot an arrow at the pig and killed it. But after the pig fell down he saw another arrow on the pig's body. A tribal-hunter proclaimed that he was the one who killed the pig and not Arjuna. Arjuna accepted defeat and sat in meditation but the hunter started vilifying Arjuna. Being a kshatriya Arjuna agreed to fight with the hunter to prove his might. During this fight the hunter trounced Arjuna while the hunter's wife standing close by was laughing at the scene. While Arjuna was getting defeated in this way he prayed to Lord Shiva in his mind that "Oh Lord Mahadeva, if it is you fighting with me, then please release your hold on me." Immediately the hunter released his hold on Arjuna and Arjuna pushed the hunter and overpowered him dramatically. After this, he fell at the hunter's feet and the hunter and his wife showed their forms as Lord shiva and Mother Parvati. Later Arjuna got the mantra for invoking Pashupata astra from Lord Shiva. Hanuman and Arjuna are different.

19. Dear Devotees, Please accept my obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada. By now, most of you have received earlier e-mails describing the situation in Kazakhstan's ISKCON community, Sri Vrindavana Dhama/Palace of the Soul. In brief, the local court has passed an illegal ordinance, enforcing the governments repossession and destruction of land legally purchased by ISKCON and privatised through government approved means. People are losing theirhomes, their livelihood, their possesions, and their dignity. This is an embarrasing and pronounced violation of human and religious rights. Please find footage of the forceful, and illegal, attack, on the Kazakhstan devotees, and their homes, earlier today, here: http://www.palaceofthesoul.com/media/confrontation/confrontation320x240.wmv (The footage may take a few moments to load. If clicking the link does not work, please cut and paste it into the address bar of your web browser.) In this footage, you will see the residents of Sri Vrindavana Dhama/Palace of the Soul peacefully protesting while they are attacked, harrassed, and assaulted by police and court officials and while bulldozers roll onto their property to destroy their homes. This must end. We must all get involved and we must do it now. Please consider doing any of the following: (1) Contact your local branch of Amnesty International (www.amnestyusa.org <http://www.amnestyusa.org/> or ********><!--D(["mb","www.amnesty.org <http://www.amnesty.org/> ) and describe the situation to them. 20. How My Cancer Became a Blessing By Surapriya Devi Dasi (This article appeared in Jan-Feb 2004 issue of Back to Godhead) On August 18, 2002, my life took a fateful turn. A persistent leg pain was diagnosed as being caused by malignant terminal breast cancer that had spread all over my body. Till then my life had been more or less similar to that of most Hindu housewives. I was born and brought up in Maharashtra, in a cultured and pious family and married a respectable school teacher, Bhagavan Malwadkar, who went on to become the principal of his school. Our three sons became well-educated young men, with bright careers in front of them. Then Lord Krishna entered my life. Two of my sons - Siddhanath and Santosh - met devotees of the ISKCON Youth Forum, Pune, in the middle of 1997. Being inspired by the devotees' association, they took to the practice of Krishna consciousness enthusiastically. I was somewhat taken aback by their sudden transformation, but after I met Gaursundara Dasa, the devotee who was teaching them about Krishna, I too was attracted by his disarming simplicity and profound wisdom. My husband and I invited him to start a weekly Bhagavad-gita program at our house in Kothrud, one of the main suburbs of Pune, and he agreed. As the weeks passed by, I was drawn more and more toward Krishna consciousness. In the middle of 2000, my devotee sons decided to renounce their promising careers to join ISKCON full-time to become brahmacharis (celibate students). I was aghast; all the dreams of their glorious future I had cherished since their birth lay shattered. But I continued my devotional practices and gradually came to accept this as the inconceivable sweet will of the Lord. Meanwhile I suffered periods of poor health, but nothing seemed seriously wrong - till the day of that devastating diagnosis. Within days of the diagnosis I underwent surgery, but it was a lost cause. The cancer was so widespread, doctors told my family members, that treatment could at best delay the inevitable by a few months. Not only was the disease itself very painful, but the treatment brought its own pains, with little chance of success. As the horrifying reality of my plight sank in, I sensed that the pain, already excruciating, would worsen till death took its final toll. I felt it would be far easier to end my life right away than to try to endure the pain in an agonizing wait for an uncertain yet imminent death. Spiritual Solace My sons, who had by now become initiated (Siddhanath had become Sankirtanananda Dasa, and Santosh had become Sundaravara Dasa), were alarmed when I revealed my thoughts to them. In gentle yet firm words, they told me that suicide would not solve my problems; rather it would aggravate them. They explained how all suffering comes from our past deeds and cannot be avoided by artificial means. They cautioned me that my trying to escape my destined suffering through suicide would only postpone the suffering to my next life. Besides that, the reaction to the sinful act of destroying one's own body by suicide only adds to future suffering. It was better, they told me to take shelter of Lord Krishna through devotional service, tolerate the suffering, seeing it as His mercy, become purified, and return back home, back to Godhead, never to take birth again in this world of suffering. They reassured me that prayerful remembrance of the Lord would provide me relief from pain even in this life. I was stunned to hear such profound philosophy from the sons I had nourished with my own breast milk. But soon the truth and wisdom in their words entered my heart and I became filled with new hope. I resolved to spend the rest of my life cultivating devotional remembrance of Krishna. The doctors told me I had around seven months left. I started thinking of King Parikshit, who had only seven days to prepare for his death. He had gone to the banks of the Ganges, heard Srimad Bhagavatam continuously for those seven days, and perfected his life. I decided to follow in his footsteps. I told my husband that I wanted to spend the last days of my life at the ISKCON temple in Pune. The temple president, Radhe Shyama Dasa, whom I had always revered as a compassionate, saintly person, promptly agreed to provide us a room. I was moved by his kindness, as I knew there was an acute space shortage at the temple - forty-three brahmacharis lived in three rooms. We quickly moved into the temple. As I started visiting the deities daily, hearing the classes and kirtanas, and reading Srila Prabhupada's books, I discovered something amazing: fixing my consciousness on Krishna protected me from the unbearable pain my body was inflicting upon me. For a short time, my health seemed to improve, and my husband and I returned home, freeing up some space at the temple. But as soon as I left the temple, my pain became so excruciating that I felt like I was being pierced from within at a thousand places. No amount of painkillers helped, but whenever I returned to the temple, my pain subsided. I realized again that it was Lord Krishna who was protecting me from my pain, not the medicines. I begged Radhe Shyama Dasa to please allow me to spend the brief reminder of my life at the temple, and he graciously consented, despite the inconveniences it would invariably cause him and the other devotees there. Since childhood I had heard about Krishna bhakti and I knew that devotion was incomplete without initiation from a bona fide spiritual master. I started praying intensely, "Dear Lord Krishna, please give me the shelter of a guru before I leave this body." My OBE On January 23, 2003, I underwent a major surgery. During the operation, my breath stopped for several minutes. During those traumatic minutes, I realized my identity to be distinct from my body; I could see, from a vantage point above the operation theatre, my frail body lying lifeless on the operation table. I saw the doctors and nurses running around, trying frantically to revive me. I don't know what happened after that, but I woke up to find myself inside my body again. After that out-of-body experience (OBE) I felt intuitively that Krishna had given me a fresh lease on life just so I could get the shelter of a guru. And, sure enough, on April 4, 2003, His Holiness Radhanatha Swami, the spiritual master of my devotee sons, accepted me as his disciple. When I look back at my life and the great spiritual transformation that has taken place over the last few months, I feel strongly that cancer has proved to be a blessing for me. Had it not been for this deadly disease, I would never have risen from ritualistic piety to heartfelt devotion; I would simply have grown old, got diseased, died and continued on aimlessly in the cycle of birth and death. I would never have got the great fortune of living in the Lord's temple, and I would probably never have sought or received initiation. And certainly I would never have experienced the sweetness of helpless remembrance of Lord Krishna. I feel therefore that the Lord has blessed me by giving cancer and by simultaneously giving me shelter through His devotees and mission. Generally when a young son renounces the world to serve God, his parents in particular and the people in general are shocked at what they consider to be irresponsibility and escapism. I was no exception to such sentiments. My anguish was, in fact, much greater, because not one, but two, of my sons decided to forsake everything for the Lord's service. But now on the verge of death, when the futility of all material achievements stands exposed before me and the inestimable value of devotional service is dawning upon me, I realize how wise my sons were in dedicating their life to the service of the Lord in the prime of their youth. During my sickness, my two devotee sons carefully attended to my needs, arranging for me to come and stay in the temple with them, cooking for me, accompanying me to the hospital and taking turns in serving me. Whenever I was in pain or distress, they were always there by my side to support and encourage me. They did all a faithful son can be expected to do for his mother. But over and above caring for my body, they cared for the real me - the soul. They provided me with spiritual knowledge and devotional practices, which saved me from unbearable bodily pain and brought me indescribable inner happiness. I therefore feel that what they have done for me is for more than what an ordinary son can ever do for his mother. I feel proud that they were so intelligent that they took to devotional service even before I did. It is sometimes said that the child is the father of the man. In my case, the sons have become the spiritual guides of the their mother. Lastly I feel profound gratitude to Srila Prabhupada, his followers, and his mission, ISKCON, for having provided me with the shelter of Lord Krishna's lotus feet in my last days when I so desperately needed it. It is only be their grace that for me cancer has been transformed from a curse into a blessing. ****************************** Surapriya Devi Dasi passed away on June 13, 2003, at 3:15 A.M. within the premises of the Sri Sri Radha Kunjabihari temple, ISKCON, Pune. At that time, a CD player was playing a recording of Srila Prabhupada singing the Hare Krishna maha-mantra and her youngest son, Sundaravara Dasa, was chanting on his beads next to her. Before losing consciousness the previous night, she repeatedly chanted the name of Srila Prabhupada and said that she very distinctly felt his presence in the room, something she had felt dimly on several occasions earlier. A few hours before her departure, her husband told her that his presence next to her would distract her from thinking of Krishna at the time of death and that he would therefore go to a nearby relative's house for the night. She readily agreed. During her last days, her relatives said that they saw no fear of death in her; rather they felt a divine peace pervade her being progressively. Even the doctors treating her commented that they had never seen a bone cancer patient so peaceful amid so much pain. (Cancer spread through the bones is known to be extremely painful.) She also requested her husband that, after her death, he take to the vanaprastha (retired) order of life and dedicate his life to the service of Lord Krishna in ISKCON. At the time of her initiation, Surapriya Devi Dasi wrote on her initiation from that she would like to preach Krishna consciousness. Devotees were skeptical that she could possibly preach, being in such a precarious physical condition. But she would fervently request every relative who came to see her to start chanting at least one round on beads of the Hare Krishna maha-mantra. Most of her relatives, being moved by her earnest concern for their spiritual well-being despite being herself on her deathbed, started chanting at once. Moreover Lord Krishna fulfilled His devotee's pure desire in a very special way. June 13 and 14 happened to be the dates of a spiritual camp at the Pune temple for over 150 young people from all over India. By arranging for her death on the first day of this camp, Krishna gave all these young people a timely reminder of the harsh reality of death, a reality that modern society tried to hide and ignore. Through her shining example, they also realized the necessity of accepting the saving grace of devotional service. Surapriya Devi Dasi thus preached the glory of devotional service through the way she accepted death. Krishna also glorified Surapriya Devi Dasi for her sincere devotion by arranging to have many devotees chanting to create an auspicious atmosphere at the time of her departure form her body. Surapriya Devi Dasi spoke the gist of this article to her husband in Marathi, her mother tongue. Chaitanya Charana Dasa translated the information and compiled the article.
21. This is the jist of the "only solution for all problems" as narrated by H.H. Radhanath Maharaja in the initiation lecture of 1997 during Gaura purnima. He was explaining this in 5 simple steps as follows. 1. The only purpose of human form of life is purification 2. The only way to get purified is when Krishna is pleased with us 3. The only way to please Krishna is to please Guru (Yasya prasadad Bhagavat ........) 4. The only way to please Guru is to follow his instruction. 5. The only way by which we get determination to follow Guru's instructions is to follow his first and foremost instruction "Wake up early in the morning and chant 16 rounds of Hare Krishna Mahamantra". This is the only process recommended in the 14 planetary system to perfect our lives.
22. The appearance of Lord Narasimhadeva in ISKCON Sri Mayapur The story of how Lord Narasimhadeva came to Sri Mayapur Chandrodaya Mandir - reprinted from the Mayapur journal based on a discussion with HG Atma Tattva Prabhu (ACBSP) On the 24th of March, 1984, at 12.20 a.m., thirty-five dacoits armed with weapons and bombs attacked Sri Mayapur Chandrodaya Mandir. They harassed the devotees and treated them with derision. But the greatest shock came when the dacoits decided to steal the Deities of Srila Prabhupada and Srimati Radharani. Fearlessly the devotees challenged the attackers. How could they see Srila Prabhupada and Srimati Radharani carried away? Shots were fired, a few dacoits fell, and their plans foiled. Srila Prabhupada was rescued, but the beautiful form of Srimati Radharani would no longer grace the main altar. This incident really disturbed the minds of the devotees. Those involved in management were especially concerned to make some permanent solution. This was not the first time the devotees had faced violence and harassment in Mayapur. The co-director of Mayapur suggested that Lord Narasimhadeva be installed. When the dacoits had threatened devotees at yoga-pitha, Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura and his son Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura had promptly installed Sri Sri Lakshmi-Narasimhadeva. There had been no further disturbances. Other devotees in Mayapur were not so keen to follow so closely in these footsteps. The pujari must be a naisthika-brahmachari (celibate from birth), and the worship of Lord Narasimhadeva must be very strict and regulated. Who would be prepared to worship Him? Despite such hesitancy, the co-director was enthusiastic to bring Lord Narasimhadeva to Mayapur. He asked Bhaktisiddhanta Dasa and myself to draw some sketches. One day quite spontaneously he said that the Deity's legs should be bent, ready to jump, he should be looking around ferociously, his fingers should be curled, and flames should be coming from his head. I sketched a Deity in this mood. The devotees liked it, and Pankajanghri Dasa agreed to worship him. Radhapada Dasa, a wealthy devotee from Calcutta offered to sponsor the sculpting and installing of the Deity. It seemed Lord Narasimhadeva's appearance in ISKCON Mayapur would be a simple, straight-forward affair. Radhapada Dasa promptly gave Rs.1, 30,000 and it was accepted that the Deity would be ready for installation in three months. I left for south India to get things organized. By Krishna's grace I soon found a very famous sthapati. A sthapati not only sculpts Deities; he is also expert in temple architecture and engineering. The man was very obliging until I mentioned that the Deity we wanted to carve was Ugra-Narasimha. He emphatically refused to make such a Deity. I approached many Deity sculptors, but the answer was always the same: No. I had made a number of trips between Mayapur and south India, six months had passed, but Lord Narasimhadeva had not yet manifested in Deity form. Radhapada Dasa was very anxious to see Lord Narasimhadeva installed in Mayapur. He asked me to visit the original sthapati I have seen and once again I pleaded him with our case. This time the sculptor was a little more congenial and offered to read me a chapter from the silpasastra (a Vedic scripture on sculpture and temple architecture) that deals with the different forms of deities. He read aloud some verses describing Lord Narasimhadeva. A series of verses described his flame-like mane, his searching glance, and his knees bent with one foot forward ready to jump from the pillar. When he read this I was amazed. This was exactly what we wanted. I showed him the sketch I had done. He was impressed and offered to draw an outline based on the scriptural description which we could use as a guide for sculpting the Deity. He reminded me, though, that he would not carve the form himself. It took him a week to complete the sketch, and it was very impressive. I returned to Mayapur and showed the sketch to the temple authorities. Everyone wanted this same sthapati to carve the Deity. Once again I was sent back to south India to try to convince him. I went straight to the house of the sthapati. I was feeling very anxious. What could I do but pray to Lord Narasimhadeva to be merciful and agree to manifest himself in our temple in Sri Mayapur Dhama? I had hardly said two sentences when the man very matter-of-factly said he would carve the Deity. The story of how he came to this decision is interesting. The sthapati had approached his guru, the Sankaracharya of Kanchipuram, about our request. His guru's immediate reply was, "Don't do it. Your family will be destroyed." But then, after a moment's reflection, he asked, "Who has asked you to carve this Deity?" when he heard that it was the Hare Krishna people from Navadvipa, he became very concerned. "They want Ugra-Narasimha? Are they aware of the implications of sculpting and installing Ugra-Narasimha? Such deities were carved over 3,000 years ago by very elevated sthapatis. There is a place on the way to Mysore where a very ferocious Ugra-Narasimha is installed. The demon Hiranyakashipu is torn open on His lap and his intestines are spilling out all over the altar. Once, the standard of worship there was very high. There was an elephant procession and festival everyday. But gradually the worship declined. Today that place is like a ghost town. The whole village is deserted. No one can live there peacefully. Is that what they want for their project?" The sthapati replied, "They are insistent. They are constantly coming to talk to me about the Deity. Apparently they have some problem with the dacoits." Handing his guru a sketch of the Deity, he said, "This is the Deity they want." His guru took the sketch and looked at it knowingly. "Ah, this is an Ugra category," he said, "but a Deity in this particular mood is called Sthanu-Narasimha. He doesn't exist on this planet. Even the demigods in the heavenly planets don't worship a form like this. Yes, this Deity belongs to the Ugra category. Ugra means ferocious, very angry. There are nine forms within this category. They are all very fierce. The one they want is Sthanu-Narasimha: stepping out of the pillar. No. Don't carve this Deity. It will not be auspicious for you. I will talk with you about this later. A few nights later the sthapati had a dream. In the dream his guru came to him and said, "For them you can carve Sthanu-Narasimha." The next morning he received a had-delivered letter from Kanchipuram. The letter was from Sankaracharya and gave some instructions regarding temple renovations. There was a footnote at the bottom. It read, "For ISKCON you can carve Sthanu-Narasimha. The sthapati showed me the letter and said, "I have my guru's blessings. I will carve the Deity." I was overwhelmed with joy. I gave him an advance payment and asked him how much time it would take to carve the Deity. He said the Deity would be ready for installation within six months. I returned to Mayapur. After four peaceful months in the holy dhama, I decided to go to South India and purchase the heavy brass paraphernalia required for Narasimhadeva worship and then collect the Deity. The trip was well organized and trouble-free until I visited the sthapati. I explained to him that all the paraphernalia required for the worship had been purchased and that I had come to collect the Deity. He looked at me as if I'd lost my sense and exclaimed, "What Deity? I haven't even found the suitable stone!" I couldn't believe my ears. "But you told me he would be ready in six months," I exclaimed. "I will keep my promise," he said. "Six months after I find the stone the Deity will be ready for installation." His reply was emphatic, but I just couldn't understand or accept the delay. In frustration I challenged him, "There are big slabs of stone all over South India. What's the problem?" he looked at me the way a teacher would view a slow student and said very deliberately, "I am not making a grinding mortar, I am making a Deity. The scriptures tell us that only a stone that has life can be used to make a Vishnu Deity. When you hit seven points of the stone slab and they make the sound mentioned in the scriptures, then that stone may be suitable. But the there is a second test to indicate whether the stone is living stone. There is a bug that eats granite. If it eats from one side of the stone to the other and leaves a complete trail visible behind it, then the second test of living stone has been passed. That stone is living stone, and expression can manifest from it. Only from such a slab can I carve your Narasimhadeva. Such stone speaks poetry. All features of Deity sculpted from such stone will be fully expressive and beautiful. Please be patient. I've been searching sincerely for your six foot slab." Appearance of Lord Narasimhadeva… I was amazed and little anxious. The devotees in Mayapur were expecting the arrival of the Deity soon. How was I going to explain the "living stone" search to them? May be they would decide to make Narasimhadeva from marble. I decided to try to lighten the subject by discussing the Prahlada Maharaja murti with the sthapati. "Please forgive me, but I forgot to tell you last time I came that we want a Prahlada murti. We want to worship Prahlada-Narasimhadeva. What do you think?" "I don't think that will be possible," the sthapati replied matter-of-factly. I looked at him incredulously, not sure what to say. He smiled and continued, "You want everything done exactly according to scritptures. You Narasimhadeva will be four feet high. Comparatively speaking, that will make Prahlada Maharaja the size of an amoeba." "But we want Prahlada Maharaja one foot high," I interrupted. "Fine," the sthapati replied, "but that means your Narasimhadeva will have to be about 120 feet high." We began to argue back and forth about Prahlada Maharaja's form. Finally the sthapati sighed in resignation and agreed to make Prahlada Maharaja one foot tall. At least I now had something positive to report when I returned to Mayapur. After two months I returned to South India. There had been no developments. I shuttled back and forth from Mayapur to South India every thirty or forty days. Finally our stone was found and the sthapati became a transformed man. For over a week he hardly spent any time at home. Hour after hour, day after day, he just sat staring at the slab. He had a chalk in hand but didn't draw anything. He refused to allow his laborers to do anything except remove the excess stone to make the slab rectangular. The next time I visited him, he had made a sketch on the stone. That was all. I was worried. The Mayapur managers were becoming impatient. "Are you sure this Deity will be finished in six months?" I asked in desperation. "Don't worry. The work will be done." He replied. I returned to Mayapur, only to be sent back to South India to check on some details of the Deity. I found the sthapati carving the form himself with intense care and dedication. At that stage the stone had gone and the shape had come. The sthapati had just started on the armlets. He took two weeks to carve them. All the features were so refined and delicate. I was impressed and very happy. It took the sthapati a little over twelve months to finish the Deity. When he completed the work he didn't immediately inform me but decided to visit some friends for a few days. It was the monsoon season, there were few visitors, and he felt it safe to lock up Lord Narasimhadeva securely in his thatched shed. Two days later his neighbors ran to inform him that the thatched shed was on fire. There was heavy rain and everything was wet, but the coconut-tree roof had caught fire. He ran to the scene to find Narasimhadeva untouched but the shed burned to ashes. Immediately he phoned me, "Please come and take your Deity. He's burning everything. He's made it clear He wants to go NOW!" Enthusiastically I traveled to south India, hired a truck, and half-filled it with sand. I arrived at the sthapati's studio thinking this final stage would be relatively simple. I had foolishly forgotten that Lord Narasimhadeva is a very heavy personality: he weighed one ton! After two or three hours we managed to lift the Deity safely from the shed onto the truck. To travel across the border safely, we also needed police permission, along with signed papers from the Central Sales Tax Department, the Archeological Director, and the Art Emporium Department in Tamil Nadu. All the officers demanded to see the Deity before signing the necessary papers. Once they took darshan of Lord Narasimhadeva, they all became very obliging and efficient. We had all the necessary papers in hand within twenty-four hours - a miracle given the usual quagmire of bureaucracy found in government offices in India. The trip back to Mayapur was also amazingly trouble-free and peaceful. Our protector was certainly with us. Usually the sthapati comes on the day of the installation ceremony, goes into the Deity room and carves the eyes of the Deity. This is called netranimilanam (opening the eyes). It was an exceptional case that our Narasimhadeva's sthapati had already carved the eyes. He had not only carved the eyes; he had also done the prana-pratistha (installing the life force), a little puja and an arati. I am sure that is why all the papers were prepared so obligingly, and transporting the Supreme Lord was so easy. He was already present. And who could dare to say no to Lord Narasimhadeva? The installation of Lord Narasimhadeva was very simple and lasted three days; from the 28th to the 30th of July 1986. I remember feeling apprehensive that perhaps the installation was too simple. The grave warnings of the Sankaracharya of Kanchipuram had deeply impressed me. But my mind was soon appeased by an awareness of loud, dynamic kirtana, sankirtana-yajna, the only true opulence of kali yuga, was dominating the scene. I felt enlivened and satisfied. Lord Narasimhadeva, the protector of the sankirtana mission, had finally decided to manifest at Sri Mayapur Chandrodaya Mandir.
