    O Sri Sudarshana! All the enemies of your Lord's devotees run away fearing your strength. All auspicious attributes find their home in you. Those who worship you cross the 'shoreless' ocean of Samsara and free themselves from the cycle of birth and death. The entire Universe is stabilized by your mighty power. You cut asunder all the sins of those who approach you as their refuge. You bless all of your devotees with the knowledge of righteous conduct as prescribed by the Vedas. O Lord Sudarshana.     Oh Sri Sudarshana! You are resplendent as the precious decoration on the hand of Lord Vishnu, who has the universes as His body. Through your grace the devas are freed from the fear caused by the Asuras (demons). Indra and Brahma always worship you. The Satapatha Brahmana belonging to Shukla Yajur Veda hails your glories and pays tribute to you. The scholars of this universe seek your help to overcome their disputes. Ahirbudhnya Samhita says that Siva worships you and sought to see your beautiful form with His own eyes. O Lord Sudarshana of illustrious attributes! Hail to Thee! Hail to Thee!

    O Lord Sudarshana! You shine like the resplendent assembly of lightning. The bright tongues of flames surrounding you appear like a cage (home) for you. The forms of Vasudeva, Sankarshana and others find their positions around your geometric form (yantra). Even the scholars with sharp intellects stumble, when they try to understand the full extent of your glory. It is a beautiful sight to see the sixteen weapons of yours resting on your hands to serve you. You are dedicated to come to the rescue of those who seek your protection.     O Lord Sudarshana! The Righteous people have firm attachment to your holy feet. The Six Kalyana Gunaas --- Knowledge, Power, Strength, Wealth, Heroism, and Effulgence-- find their natural home in You. The Vedas have firmly established Your glory in their many sections. Like your Lord (Vishnu), You have both manifest and transcendent forms. You cut asunder the fear caused by the foes of Indra, the foremost among your devotees. You were responsible for the burning down Kashi, the city of Siva to ashes. You stood at the tip of Siva's arrow when He was engaged in the campaign to destroy the demon Tripuraasura.     O Lord Sudarshana! You arrest the growth of the evil-minded Asuras and destroy them down to their roots. You are like the resplendent Sun banishing the dark night of Samsara, which bedevil your devotees. You overcome any and every act of deception practiced by the Asuras. You remove every shred of false knowledge that invades the minds of those who seek refuge in you. The Devas celebrate Your heroic deeds and experience joy in witnessing Your powerful actions. You revolve and rotate in many ways in your battles against the enemies of Your devotees. May Thou with such auspicious attributes prosper further! Hail to Thee! Hail To Thee!

    O Lord Sudarshana! You bless us with Your dynamic gait of One foot placed forward in movement and the other rapidly following it. Your position in that gait is beautiful to behold. You are surrounded by Your magnificent and fearsome weapons. You are the conqueror of Powerful illusions (maya) caused by Asuras and are not affected by them. You are decorated with many beautiful flower garlands that add to your natural beauty. You are firmly bound in the warp of your great compassion for your devotees and bless them when they worship You through Your Yantra and Mantra. O Sri Sudarshana of such auspicious qualities! Those who recite Your mantra made up of the six letters (aksharas) gain incomparable wealth. Your devotees invoke You in Your yantra of six corners formed by two intersecting triangles and worship You at its epicenter. You pervade and reside in all the creations of Your Lord. You have the power to complete all deeds that you decide to undertake. You are thus a satya sankalpa and serve as the divine Kalpaka tree granting all the boons that your devotees request.   3. Dayasindhu- The White Spot on the Lord's Chin

    The white spot on the chin of the Lord will remind us of Sri Ananthalwar, a disciple of Sri Ramanuja. As a part of maintenance of a garden in the service of the Lord, Ananthalwar was digging up earth, assisted by his pregnant wife. She got tired.

     

     

     

    The compassionate Lord could not contain himself. He assumed the form of a lad and assisted her in her service.

     

     

    But Ananthalwar did not like the intrusion and hit Him on His chin with the spade. The lad simply disappeared. Later when Ananthalwar went to the Temple to worship, he found the Lord bleeding on His chin.

     

     

    Ananthalwar realised his mistake and profusely apologised to the Lord and applied "Pacha Karpuram" (camphor balming) with fond love. The Lord pardoned Ananthalwar and said He would sport the Pacha Karpuram for ever in remembrance of Ananthalwar's love and devotion.

     

    Sri Kulasekharalvvar in his enchanting poetry expressed his desire to be born and reborn only in Tirumala.

    "Whatever the form! Howsoever mean! Be it a fish or bush! Shrub or stone!" His only wish is to be associated forever with Tirumala and the Bhaktas. His love for the Lord culminates into passion.

     

    The Lord sanctioned his wish. The gold plated step in the Garbhagriha in Tirumala Temple is named "Kulasekharapadi". Kulasekharalwar is remembered forever.

     

     

    In Kaliyuga, it is said, singing the praise of the Lord is the easiest means to obtain His grace. Lord Srinivasa has been the central theme for many a saint-minstrel. The Alwars were the earliest to be inspired by Lord Balaji. Portions of the Naalayira Divya Prabandham comprising the songs of the Alwars are sung everyday in the presence of the Lord.

     

     

    The Prabandhams and the outpouring divine grace of Sri Balaji inspired Tallapaka Annamacharya to sing His glories in Telugu and in Sanskrit.

     

    Of the 32000 songs composed by him, only 12000 are available.Keertanas like 'Brahma Kadigina Padamu' and 'Adivo Alladivo Sriharivaasamu' are popular even today.

    Sri Balaji's influence can be discerned in the thousands of songs sung by another devotee, the famous Purandaradasa. Only a few hundred of his songs are available. 'Daasana Maadiko Enna', 'Nambide Ninna Paadava Venkataramana' are worthy of mention.

     

    Sri Venkatesa has made the great Ramabhakta, Sri Tyagaraja, the author of over 4000 songs, also to pour his heart out in intense bhakti for Him. 'Tera Teeyagarada', 'Venkatesa! Ninnu Sevimpanu' are among his well-known Keertanas on the Lord of the Hills.

     

    The Lord has enriched the entire approach to Bhakti through medium of music, the easiest way to Him. This has been exemplified by the minstrels through millennia. The devotee has to be eternally grateful to Him for this supreme gift.

  4. Jndas, This (cultural adaptation) is a nice idea. However, if you want to keep any part of the tradition intact, then what's the harm in at least handing out some small leaflets to explain what's happening?

     

    >For example once he mentioned he was thinking to have a sermon hall like the churches with benches (pews) where people would wear their shoes and come in to hear the Gita or Bhagavatam.

     

    But did he ever propose replacing the temple and deity-worship with church-style ritual?

     

    For me, some of the "cultural" things are very beautiful. That doesn't mean that the "charanamrita cups" idea shouldn't be considered. It's not a bad idea jndas. Sorry if I criticized too much.

    Guest is god, guestji. You should be delighted to be able to serve Krishna within your guest, and being hospitable is literally part of religion.

     

    The first time I visited a temple I was so nervous I would do something wrong. I was already devoted to Krishna to an extent before I ever had the chance to enter a temple, so I was so thankful to have my husband there to show me what to do.

    Actually it took me quite a while to get the hang of things. You cannot take charanamrita with your left hand. Westerners don't generally know this. You should not take prasad with the left hand, that's another thing. Do not point your feet towards the deity-- this is important, but guests will have no idea about this. When doing pradakshinam, keep the god to your right and go in a clockwise direction- always go an odd number of times (three, five, seven, eleven...) These are NOT things that we in the west are brought up with, and I do believe that some "mouth-feeding" would be well-appreciated by our honorable guests.

  6. Yes, bring your brains back to Bharat...

     

    As for loving relationships... hey, at least in my experience Indian people don't dump their parents in nursing homes and "forget" to visit them. Elders are not a burden, they are reservoirs of wisdom and should be treated as such... but no such luck here in the US. Most of the time anyway (I shouldn't generalize though...)

    And if when hearing bhaktas sing the names of the Lord the only thing you notice is the mistakes in their pronunciation, you will have a very long journey towards spiritual advancement.

    I agree. It's kind of like if somebody drew a picture of Sri Krishna, but did something in it you didn't like, like made the makara earrings too small, or the lotus eyes too big, would you say, "Oh, that's a disgusting picture!"

     

    I think you probably just got a little over-excited, prabhu. Don't worry so much, chant His name the way you want, He will hear you, don't worry.

  9. Well, actually throughout India the pronunciation tends to differ.

     

    In chanting/singing, BOTH ways are correct, depending on the rhythm of the text.

     

    Hare Rama Hare Krishna is correct in one chant, but could also be Hare Ram Hare Krishan if you like (if you change the rhythm).

     

    "He Ram He Ram" or "Raghupati Raghav(a) Raja Ram" is also correct.

     

     

    However... if you consider that each letter in Sanskrit is actually a syllable and not just a single phoneme, then Raama is actually the correct pronunciation. Raa + ma.

     

    As for "Ramo" I think people are simply having trouble pronouncing, but why do you want to make fun of them? /images/graemlins/smile.gif

    I always get confused with the timings. My husband's family is in Hyderabad, and it is usually one half hour before or after our time, depending on whether we are on "daylight savings time" or not.
