  1. nigamakalpatharorgalitham phalam sukamukhadamruthadravasamyutham pibatha bhagavatham rasamalayam muhuraho rasika bhuvi bhavukah Hear, all intelligent and thoughtful people! Relish the nectarian juice of the Bhagavatham, the ripe fruit of the Kalpaka Vriksha of the Vedas. It has emanated from thej lips of Sage Suka which makes this fruit even more tasteful --- Srimad-Bhagavatam 1.1.2 jivacchavo bhagavatanghrirenum na jatu martyo'bhilabheta yastu sri-visnu-padyaa manujastulasya svasacchavo yastu na vedagandham --- Srimad Bhagavatham 2.3.23 That person who has not at any time received the dust of the feet of the Bhagavathottama on his head is akin to a dead body. That person who has never experienced the sweet smell of tulasi leaves from the feet of Sri Vishnu, is also akin to a dead body.
  2. In reply to "I can say with certainty that the above is not true. Krishna is specifically glorified in the Krishna Upanishad (part of Rig Veda) and the GopAla-tApaNI upaniShad (part of Atharva Veda). Both upanishads are accepted by all vedAntins as being among the 108 principle upaniShads." That's interesting. Can you tell me more about Krishnopanishat? I have heard about the Gopala Tapani Upanishat(it's referred to as Sree Tapaniyam in the Narayaneeyam by Melpattur Narayana Bhattatiri, an erudite Krishna Bhakta of Kerala). By the way, I was referring to Vedas proper in my post. Regarding eulogy of Krishna in the Upanishaths, Devakiputra Krishna is mentioned and eulogised as a great teacher, in the Chandogya Upanishat. I find that teaching interesting, since it is closely similar to the Karmayoga in the Gita, as also referred to in the Uddhava Samvadam in Bhagavatha.

  4. Yam Pravrajantham anupetham apethakruthyam dwaipayano virahakathara aajuhava putreti tanmayatano taravopinethu tam sarvabhoothahrudhayam munim aanathosmi (Srimad Bhagavatha Mahatmyam 1.1) I bow down to that great sage Suka, who has entered the innermost reaches of the hearts of every living being. When he went away to the forest after renouncing worldly life, without being initiated to the sacred thread, Dwaipayana (Vyasa) became aggrieved and cried, "O my son!" to which all the trees, which had by then attained oneness with Suka, responded alike. Tad ashmasaram hrdayam batedam yad grhyamanai harinamadheyah na vikriyetatha yada vikaro netre jalam gatraruhesu harsah It has to be a heart made of stone, that, even after chanting the holy names of Hari, does not change and become ecstatic, that does not cause tears to fill the eyes and the hairs to stand on end." (Srimad Bhag: 2.3.24)
  5. Krishna and Vishnu are one and the same divine godhead and Krishna is one of the Avataras of Vishnu in mother earth, "for the protection of virtue and the destruction of the vicious" As Bhagavad Gita says: "Paritranaya Sadhoonam Vishasaya ca Dushkrutham Dharmasamsthapanarthaya Sambhavami Yuge Yuge" One more interesting difference is that Vishnu is specifically mentioned and worshipped in the Vedas while Krishna is not. Refer to the Vishnu Suktam in Vedic verses like Tamu Stotarah purvyam yathavida Rtasya garbham janusa pipartana asya jananto nama cidvivaktana mahas the Visno sumatim bhajamahe.

  7. Since Gayatri is the name of the meter, there can be an infinitely many number of Gayatri mantras. The most popular, most ancient Gayatri mantra that finds mention in all the Vedas, is popularly called Savitri Mantra, since it is chanted to propitiate the God Savita. (or Savitr).
  8. just follow Krishnas teachings:: Read the Bhagavad Gita daily.(read the SANSKRIT verses first eventhough you may not understand them) Verse (2,2) says, klaibhyam ma sma gamah partha naithatvai upapadhyathe kshudram hrudhayadaurbalyam tyaktvottishta paranthapah Don't yield to unmanliness, O Son of Pritha. It does not match your prowess. Throw away this momentary faint heartedness and arise, O Hero.

  10. what I have experienced, is thru the holy Gayatri mantra. All one needs to do is to make oneself clean(bathing and achamana) after that chant the Gayatri for about 100 times with an earnest prayer to Sri Krishna to manifest truth and make our minds pure. That will definitely work. (I am not saying that I have become Paramahamsa, but I am trying, and I have come to realise that chanting the Gayatri is indeed a right and safe way). It will give one heaps of confidence to do good things and eschew the negative thoughts. Another Rig Vedic Verse: AA NO BHADRAH KRATHAVO YANTHU VISHWATAH "Let noble thoughts come to us from every side." will also help. Regards, moorthi

  12. ok. As you wish! If I say that the purpose of life is the meaning underlying the statement "Om Sri Krishnarpanamasthu' what do you say.
  13. thank you Dear Gopaldas. That was very informative. The Bhagavatha is an ocean of knowledge..I am realising that by the day, as I go reading the sanskrit text.

  15. I base it on the Upanishads and Bhagavatham. Om Sri Krishnarpanamasthu
  16. Dear Guest, you are right..! Noone would call oneself 'his divine grace' ..! I was talking about the good providence that helps one out of difficulties.. Look at the stories of Gajendra (formerly King Indradyumna), Prahlada, Dhruva in the Bhagavatha....Draupadi in Bharatha.. When they have given up all hope, Krishna came and rescued them from danger! To merit that divine grace, the divine providence...Gita and Bhagavatha says..one needs to purify one's mind through sad chinta, sat sangha. Sad chinta can be attained simply by chanting the Hare Rama Hare Krishna maha mantra..as per the Kali santharanopanishath.. I hope I have made my point clear..
  17. I have read the Nag Publishers' translation into English of Padma Purana Kurma Purana Bhagavata Purana Varaha Purana Vamana Purana Brahma Purana, Linga Purana and Brahmanda Purana Eventhough their intentions are to be most lauded, in my view the translations have almost completely robbed the originals of their beauty and charm. Of course, one can definitely not keep to the merit of the Sanskrit compositions while going for a translation to English, but what I find bad is the lack of religious feeling in the translation, which one finds so well in the originals. This is just my personal opinion...
  18. I think the following routine would help you steady your mind. 1) Do achamana and make your mind an body pure(bathing or if that's not possible, washing your hands, feet and face) 2) Do japa of the holy Gayatri mantra 108 times with intense feeling for the wellbeing of the whole world and a seeking for divine knowledge.

  20. Gita says that all one needs to merit divine grace is a pure mind and an intense longing for God. That has led Vyasa to say, 'Wise men are found even outside the pale of our creed'.
  21. Scriptures and sages say it is to realise the oneness of the universe. There is only one Brahman otherwise known as Vishnu Shiva Krishna etc. Multiplicity does not exist in reality. One attains this by making one's mind pure and through the grace of God. This is a very short, concise attempt at describing the answer to the eternal question.
  22. Yuktiyuktamupadeyam vachanam balakadapi anyatttrunamiva thyajyam apyuktam padmajanmana (Yoga Vasishta) -- Imbibe the truths even from children, if they are well reasoned and substantiated; As for the those that aren't, throw them away as you do blades of grass, even though they were stated by Lord Brahma himself. Tasmai namo bhagavathe ya idam swena rochisha Athmastham vyanjayamasa sa dharmam pathumarhathi (Bhagavatha 3.12.32) Our prayers to him, who, through his inherent knowledge manifests the whole universe, and who himself protects dharma.
  23. Read some of the poetical Upanishads, like the Mundaka or Katha or Isavasya. Also read the Bhagavad Gita or Ashtavakra Gita. You can read the Panchadasi, if you are interested in Vedanta.
  24. Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare I am a newcomer to this site. But am very much impressed and humbled at seeing the devotion of the members like you. As the Bhagavatha says, in this Kaliyuga there is nothing better for salvation than Satsanga, the association with noble souls. In the path of devotion to God, of what avail is transitory things in life..
  25. to understand the heights that India had reached in ancient times in Mathematics, Physics, Biology, Astronomy and language. also, try reading Aryabhata's, Varahamihira's, Brahmagupta's and Bhaskara's texts on Astronomy and Mathematics; and Susrutha's and Charaka's texts on medicine.
