Many news stories about prehistoric finds and their possible meaning in terms of archaeology and social history have reached the world in recent decades. One of them, found in South Germany, put scientists around the world in a state of amazement some years back. The centerpiece is the “lion man”, an idol that is made from the tusk of a mammoth in the form of a human body with a lion head. Amazingly it is dated to be 32,000 years old.

This discovery generated a lot of attention in the archaeological circles of Europe. In excavations around 1930-35 at the Lonetal area near Ulm, Germany, scientist discovered an immense jurassic cave system with lots of prehistoric artifacts in it. At first, only representations of birds, horses, turtles and single lions where found, but no morphological combinations of men and animal, so the “lion man” was quite outstanding and unique. It also became clear during later examinations that the “lion-men”, the biggest and most spectacular of the ivory figures excavated, was used for ritual purposes, unlike the other items.

The pieces of “Löwenmensch” were found in 1939 in a cave named Stadel-Höhle im Hohlenstein (Stadel cave in Hohlenstein Mountain, also called Hohlenstein-Stadel cave), in the Lonetal (Lone Valley) of the Swabian Alps, Germany. With the start of the Second World War demanding world attention, the artifact was forgotten, and only rediscovered thirty years later. The first reconstruction revealed a humanoid figurine without a head, but between 1997 and 1998, additional pieces of the sculpture were discovered and the head was reassembled and restored.

The figure was found exactly at the place in the cave where day and night meet, about 20 meters away from the entrance and buried 1.20 meters deep under the ground. Many parts of the figure were broken and where found a little distance away in the area. Therefore it took some time to finish the work of completing and reconstructing the figure and to see it as a whole.

As Vedic sastra tells us, Lord Vishnu appeared in the divine form of a half-man, half-lion with a lion face, Appearing to protect His devotee Prahlad and to stop irreligion, personified by the demon Hiranyakasipu. A description of a standing Deity form of Nrsimha Avatara of the Lord is found in the agama Silpa Shastra, and is referred to as kevala-narasimha.

In India there are many ancient temples in which the Deities of Sri Narasimha Bhagavan reside and are worshiped. Many are located in special tirthas, high up on mountain peaks or deep in caves.

Many other ancient cultures had idols or pictures of divine lion-like personalities with a human face or torso, that may also have their origin in Nrsimhadeva. For example, Egypt has the Sphinx and the war-like Sekhmetm; Persia has the Sun god Mithra, the Assyrians have the Gate Guardians of Babylon, and the Etruscan lion with wings stands at the entrance of the Temple mountain at Troy.

The winged man-lion idols are sometimes said to be associated with the Gandaberunda form of Narasimhadev, a two-headed bird form that Nrsimhadeva took while fighting with Shiva in his Sharabha (bird) form.

The great discovery in Lonetal of the man-lion idol was found in a deep cave, situated northeast towards the River Lone. At this point, Indologists and experts in proto-Vedic archeology have no proof that this idol is, in fact, Lord Narasimhadev, but with the sculpture now available for exhibition, perhaps other evidence will come to the fore, matching this form to other ancient depictions of the Visnu Avatara, our worshipable Nrisimha.

  2. Dr LLoyd S. Gordon says:

Most enlightening! The Culture of India was known in Europe from quite an early time period.

  3. Pradeep says:

I don’t mind in publishing my mail ID. I liked the latest message of Narasimha Statue

  4. JKV Raghu Setty says:

Just becoz a lion head man like wooden statue,it is hasty to think it is Narasimha.

  5. Sadasivan Pillai says:

It is necessary for us to change the word ‘myth’ from the incidents associated with Sanathan Dharma (Hinduism). Darvin’s theory has been well estbalished in our Dharma. The ‘pushpak’ aircraft existed much before Wright Brothers invented an aeroplane. We had missiles, sophisticated war heads, etc. For all these we had developed systems of mathematics, metallurgy, architecture, health care, etc. Thus, there is no mythology in Hinduism.

  6. Lt Col K T S V Sarma (Retd). says:

    JKV Raghu Setty,
There is a doubting Tom in every street corner! But set your mind at rest. Kanchi PeriyavaL confirms that the Sanatana Dharma (now-a-days known as Hindu Religion) was spread around the whole world in times bygone! There are more such evidences. The very word Mithra for the Sun as being known in Persia, is one of the classic names for the Sun God!

  7. narayanankv says:

Amazing and it is true that the Indian culture, and its Vegas are not myth. It’s real and lasting one.

  8. Raghu says:

I like the issue of Narasimha swamy. statue in South Germany. Certainly hindu religion is the first and foremost.

  12. A S R Siddanthy says:

It proves every time that HINDU CULTURE is only the oldest civilisation on this Earth.

  13. Nitya says:

It does not seem to be Narasimha. Where is the conch and discus that would sanctify the idol? Its just a Lion man that may have or not have an Indian influence. Besides, if the statue is really that old, remember the land mass structure of the Earth was quite different from what it is today.

  14. Astrapaios says:

Sri Narasimha is not in the The Vedas.

  15. Sridhar says:

    Jai Narasimha!

  16. Naaz says:

It is great. Thanks for sharing.

  17. Rajiv Saxena says:

Sanatan Dharma is the oldest and the ONLY Religion of the universe. Rest all are sects propagated by individuals.

  18. B.Srinivasan says:

Hindu Dharma is as ancient perhaps from the start of this Universe!

  19. Kuntie Jaddu says:

I personally feels an inner happiness to know Sanatan Dharma was not only 5,000 years ago but ages before that. Also it was spread all over the universe, not only in India. how great our Hindu religion is!!

  20. Delling says:

    Peace my friends Shanti Aum.
    Its all conjecture its fun:)
It doesn’t really matter about which culture is older….only a compassionate heart matters.
Aum Hrim Srim Namah Shivaya Hari Aummm

  21. Krit says:

    Enur,
You are right in a way…these are not true but the the intelligence which says this is untrue or true is the ultimate truth. That is never a myth and that is lord Nrusimha. It does not need our belief or attestation… Surprisingly!

  22. damodar das dujari says:

It is rather impossible as of now to estabish precisely the fact conclusively. However, the idol exavacted and old idols of Narsingh established iv different temples all over India definitely links as our Dharm as one of the one of the oldest and we should accept it till it is proved/established otherwise.

  23. MASA says:

SANADHANA DHARMA is as Ancient as this Universe and it’s a Pity many Religious beliefs found later between 1000 &100 BC, devastated the greatness and proofs. But the Truth has to emerge and it HAS..!!!

  24. Sanjay More says:

    Jai Lakshmi Narsimha……!

  25. Kailash Narain Pandey says:

  26. divakar says:

Once upon time entire world is followed Hinduism. Still now many countries likes Hindu culture and tradition. Great!!

  27. Raj says:

Read the comments, very interesting perspectives.
I have few points to make :
Why are we trying to prove that Sanatana dharma is the oldest, Its called Sanatana dharma because they do not know when it started.
For believers this finding will help to strengthen their belief system.A non believer is always caught up in his own web of doubts and makes it tough for himself to get out of it. What minimum we can do is to pray for them. Let us not even discuss these coz these arguments may lead us into doubts. Negative is very attractive.

  28. Anantuni Shiva Prasad says:

Right from the beginning of this Universe to it’s end , wherever you search , the roots of Hinduism will clearly be seen . This only establishes that Hinduism is “Dharma ” that reveals the secrets of this universe and not just a religion as many of us mistake .

  29. S.CHANDRASEKHAR says:

    Dear Sir,
I do have a series of discussions where I have always refused to accept that Religion or God recide only in the present India.
He is Omnipresent and Omnipotent and Ever Pervading.

  30. T.G.Ramamurthi says:

There is little doubt about the spread and scope of Sanantana Dharma, which now has been disorted as Hinduism. Dharma or a way of life which brings good to all is constant. Men may come and go and interpret things which they see differently. That is not final. Debunking without any deep knowledge is dnagerous. More discoveries more knowledge, more perfection provided it is all in good faith

  31. karthika says:

wow nice article ,it shows the excellent blog to read again & again.this type of oldest with culture articles are good to read this .

  32. Kumbakonam Ramadurai says:

Whether the Lion-Man sculpture is a rendition of Lord Narasimha, or whether the concept of one of the Avatars of Vishnu took an imaginative and profound rendition in the form of the Lion-Man, and the consequent ‘priority issues’ are beside the point if not totally futile. What is important, I think, is that at least the Indians had such a great culture based on connectivity and totality of all things Great and Small, and the consequent Cosmic and Individual Dharma. Ahimsa and Universal Love are derivatives of this gigantic thought.

Such a ‘totality’ is still living at least at the subconscious level for many. I sincerely wish and hope that such Dharma will become more and more the foundation of India as a Nation…the Ram Raj that the Mahathma dreamt of.

  33. vidhya says:

I agree with Sadasivan Pillai that we have to remove the word Myth from our Sanatan history and culture. We are Sanatan and truth and it is injustice to call our rich heritage as mythology.

  34. K.LAKSHMAN says:

The Narasimha avatar is not a myth but a real
    happening,ages ago.The non – believers may have
their own views of it but the devout ones will justify their stand by such ancient findings all over the world. My own experience is that Lord Narasimha has helped me in umpteen ways in my life, when prayed to with soulful devotion.
    K.LAKSHMAN.

  35. Jyothika says:

I cant believe that the statue that was found in Germany resembles anyway Lord Narasimha. There is no connection between east and west and the Gods are entirely different for that matter.

  36. P.R.Narayanan says:

It is very stunning to see the pic of Lord Narasimha idol found inside a cave in south Germany. This is solid proof that our Hindu religion is the oldest one existed 32000 years back encompassing the whole World.
    Jai Narasimha Baghavan.

  37. Stefffen says:

For me its a bit funny to see all the conclusions that sanatan dharma was also in Europe because they found a statue with a lipn head. So Narasimha also was in Africa and created all the lipns? I beg your pardon. The statue is just showing a creature manlike with a lion head. Ever heard of the Lyrans and other ET groups with a cat like shape some of them even a lipn like around here at leat tenth of thousands even hundred thousands of years ago. And all of a sudden all looks different.
By the way i deeply love India and its culture.

  38. Suresh Ramaswamy. says:

Irrespective of whether the Ivory figurine is a depiction of Lord Narasimha or any other deity, what is astounding is the fact that scientist would be a loss to explain, were human beings so developed 32,000 years ago, to have a culture where there was religion – because according to these scholars, it was only about 12,000 years ago when the Flandrian inter-glacial period (end of one ice age and the period between two ice ages) began. that the survivors of human race homo sapiens settled down to farming and stopped being nomadic. 32,000 years ago the world was in the grip of the last ice age and, these artifacts are not similar to other neanderthal artifacts – in fact they are more artistic, than crude. As the frontiers of our knowledge expand, the cultured civilized human history is being pushed further and further back and one day we may not be surprised to learn that Atlantis and Lemuria are not myths and 50,000 years ago our ancestors were much more developed and advanced than us – and just like us today in our blind pursuit of mammon, we destroy Nature and then comes catastrophe and the survivors once again begin with the discovery of fire and the wheel.

  39. Om Shanti says:

Om Shanti, ‘Vasudaika Kutumbakam’ (whole world is One Family) is a noble concept. We are alI One Human Race. I fold my hands in salutation and pray for magnanimity among all archielogists of the world to unearth onlyTruth as it is, melting away any inhibitions about credit going to some creed or other. I am sure we are going to discover more and more proofs of even about our liaison with other lokas (planes or worlds). How would it be if all of mankind have only one noble creed of righteous path, ‘DHARMA’!

  40. widjai Lachmi says:

It does not mater if you find or not an evidence of the Vedic culture
I know that the Sanatan Dharma was always and will be always
Lord Rama and Lord Krishna comes always in Bharath varsa
The Hindoeïsme will always exist no mater what happens

    Vijaylaxmi Devi Dasi

  41. prasad says:

    Here Krishna
